The George Inn, Eartham

Eartham is a 'Brigadoon' village - time has passed it by. It does have a bus service but you have to book the bus the day before and even then it is subject to variables. You may wonder how a pub in such a place can survive these days but there is obviously a reasonable local trade but others would have to come by car. All the more reason therefore for the pub to stock non-alcoholic beer but it had 'run out' so I settled on a pint of ginger beer to quench my thirst after walking and before driving. The bowl of soup (which cost £5.25!) that I asked for took over half-an-hour to arrive during a not-very-busy lunchtime and had I not paid for this when buying the beer I would have got up and left. Nice welcome but sloppy service. I hope not to find myself in Brigadoon again.

The White Lion, Soberton

A bijou. Pretty pub near Soberton Church. And a 'Proper Pub' where there is cosy space for drinking and a separate area for eating but both served from a central bar. Warm welcome. Roaring log fire in winter. Trestle tables under colour umbrellas in summer. Wide but not OTT pub menu. Doom Bar on draught. Immaculate loos. Well recommended.

The Partridge Inn, Singleton

A very 'pleasant pheasant' set in a pretty village at the foot of the South Downs midway between Chichester and Midhurst and convenient for the nearby Weald & Downland Open Air Museum and for the Goodwood Horse Racing and Motor Racing circuits. Popular with walkers. Good space inside and large garden with trestle tables when the weather is fine. Reasonable pub menu (which I didn't try) and rather over-priced Fullers Ales. Less pretentious than the 'Fox Runs Free' at nearby Charlton.

The Fox Goes Free, Charlton

This is a 'Posh Peoples Pub' set in a twee hamlet at the foot of the south downs conveniently close to the Goodwood Horse Racing and Motor Racing circuits so if you crave a peaceful pint away from the 'wah wahs' and the petrol-heads and the Londoners with nearby week-end holiday homes, go mid-week. Plenty of space inside and nice gardens outside when the weather is fine. Expensive but worth a visit if you are thirsty.

The Bakers Arms, Droxford

This is a 'Gastro Pub' aimed at the Red-Trousered 'Meon Valley Set' with menu and prices to match. Good locally brewed 'Wallop' and space to drink it in if you are not eating there.

The Bridge Inn, Amberley

The Bridge Inn at Amberley is an oasis. Not actually in Amberley at all but situated, as its name implies, between the railway bridge at Amberley Station and the river bridge over the Arun. If driving along the B2139 at this point between Storrington and nearby Houghton you might, despite its Inn sign, miss it altogether and think that the riverside 'Boathouse' to the south and the Tearooms, with their colourful parasols, to the north are both pubs - but worthy though they may both be - they are not. The Bridge Inn lies about 25 yards down a lane to the south. It is a Georgian style building with car park and benches to the front and lots of room inside. Good range of beers, lagers and ciders and a fine but not excessive pub menu. Warm welcome. An idea spot for refreshment if walking or cycling the South Downs Way or other local routes. I called in on 29 Aug 13 after a lengthy walk and slaked my thirst with a couple of pints of Harveys. A gem: well worth a visit.

The Royal Oak, Hooksway

This pub really ought to be called 'The Who'd 'a' thought it' as it takes some finding but what serendipity when you do. Warm welcome; good range of beers, good and well priced range of food. I always go for the all-year-round Christmas Pudding. Called in for a pint and a simple lunch while country walking on 10 August. Always a pleasure to visit.

Three Horseshoes, Elsted

This is a summer-time pub: manicured lawns with an abundance of trestle bench tables; multi-coloured flower beds, and views downhill towards the distant South Downs. But rather small inside at winter-time. A separate 'His' and 'Hers' pair of loos outside like a couple of sentry boxes. I called at about 1000 on 6 August to seek permission to leave my car in the car park which was willingly given. Returned after a lengthy walk about 1400 and was rewarded with a pint glass, a bottle of non-alcoholic beer topped up with lemonade. Perfect on a hot summer's day for someone who has to drive. Food, which I'd tried on a previous occasion, is 'up-market' and expensive but if the clientele are prepared to pay, so what!

The Elsted Inn, Elsted

This pub is a real gem. I called at about 1100 on 6 August for a refreshing pint while country walking: alas too early of course for lunch but the menu looked good and very, very reasonably priced: good range of beers too. Extremely welcoming and definitely worth another and longer visit, winter or summer. Pub does B&B but we live locally so need to stay overnight.

The Hawkley Inn, Hawkley

The Hawkley Inn is just as an old-fashioned village pub should be: no pretensions. Set in a somewhat remote but attractive Hampshire village with no bus service now, it can only be visited by car or on foot. I called in at 4pm on 15 August (Pub Open All Day) for a splendid pint of Doom Bar before setting off for a 8 mile walk. Returned at about 7pm and, as I was to drive home, asked for a thirst-quenching pint glass, with a bottle of non-alcoholic beer topped up with lemonade. The young barmaid said that they didn't have any non-alcoholic beer so I thanked her and said that I would go without - and so the pub went without my custom which was a pity because I think that all pubs nowadays which depend upon motorised customers should stock non-alcoholic beer even though it tastes dreadful!

Ship Inn, Owslebury

This pub has been in and out of the Good Pub Guide over the years and, like most pubs, almost everything depends upon the landlord. Situated in a pleasant village which has good views northwards towards Winchester. Large car park and when I called today there were a dozen cars there. Were all the drivers TT I wonder? Because, as I was going to drive after an 8 mile walk, I asked for a non-alcoholic beer. I might have been Oliver Twist because they don't sell any. Any Country pub with a large car park has a duty these days to stock non-alcoholic beer, I think. So I thanked the landlady and went without - and so did she of my custom. A pity because I should have liked to quaff a nice shandy in their sunny beer garden. Not therefore a place I shall rush back to.
