The London Trader, Hastings

Popped in on a sunday afternoon......and quickly popped out again! Rank beer...place seemed to be full of idiots and real piss'eads ! Band on was called Sara G and the Other Three...possibly the worst band I have ever seen. How can a landlord book a band that's this bad ? It beggars belief that they were probably paid too.Unbelievably awful all round !

The Plough Inn, Hastings

Been a few years since I was here last....and what a transformation.A new landlord it seems.Well kept beer with real ales on and the Harveys was sweet nectar.Popped in on a friday night which wasn't that busy but a warm welcome and friendly locals. The live music is back and on every weekend...so I decided to return on a sunday afternoon where a band was advertised for teatime.WOW ! The place was rocking.Cracking welsh band and what an atmosphere...it got too busy for me halfway through...and I was driving...otherwise I would have been calling in sick on monday morning !!

The Plough and Harrow, Litlington

Oh dear! As we were over this way and the last time we were here on a friday night we had such a laugh,so we thought we'd pop in.Where have all the customers gone? Pub has changed hands...manager looked like he was getting drunk with a few friends though the barmaid I think was the same.Asked a regular what has happened and he says the place has just gone downhill. We had a pint which was fine and went on to Alfriston.Disappointed.

Well you'll never believe it...but this pub in the mid 1980's was the place to go.It was called the Moscow Arms then.On a weekend it was full of punks..suits..goths..you name it..they were there. Many a band were also seen here..UB40..The Alarm..Two Minds Crack....it was a great place to come and pull...great atmosphere and rarely any trouble...also had good looking Aussie barmaids.Glory days !

Eight Bells, Hawkhurst

Pub is now under new management and alas has gone downhill.I think the previous landlord's name was John and under him the pub used to be buzzing especially on a Saturday when there was regular live music.Locals were friendly and relatively young (25) but not at all rowdy.I saw a couple of regular singers there and the atmosphere was great and the acts were well adverstised. However this time I missed my favourite act who was there some five weeks or so ago basically due to him not being advertised by the pub....nothing on the board outside...or inside...or in the local papers...and when I did pop in for a swifty the welcome from the new landlord was frosty to say the least.
Ba da dum..dum..dum....another one bites the dust !!

The Portobello Gold, Portobello Road

I just wanted to read the reviews of this pub as I used to drink here in the mid-'80's.I remember it as being a small establishment..but I shared a drink with many a celebrity back then..Ian McShane...Pete Wylie....we used to go down to the Sam Smith pub then further down Portobello.Shame it burnt down...but a good hustle and bustle area back then....good vibes.

Bar Oz, Bayswater

In the mid '80's...it was called 'The Moscow Arms'..and this pub was jumping and was the place to go in the area. This pub would be included in a pub crawl that would included The Sun in Splendour in Portobello Rd...The Samuel Smith around the corner from that...then up to the Moscow.
You'd often get popstars and celebs in here and a real cross of London clientel....punks...city gents...goths...aussies and kiwis...all drinking together with never any trouble.A good pulling pub and a cracking juke box.Glory days these were....and well missed....so 8 for the memories.

Well unfortunately the new owners have cut the music back to maybe once a month...if that. Most of the locals who used to enjoy a good saturday nights music have disappeared and the heart and soul has gone out of the place.Trouble is...when you lose momentum it's hard to get it back. The pub aint half as busy as what it was and my regular trips to visit the place on a saturday night to enjoy the bands has also disappeared. So sad but true.

We were way off the beaten track and on the spur of the moment on a friday night passed the pub and decided to drop in.Have'nt had such a great night in years.Had a small snack each of us which was fresh and tasty and the beer was good. The place was packed, not only for the food but the live entertainment too.A solo guitarist/singer who told a good joke too and was quite a hit with the locals who were all up dancing and singing.Fabulous atmosphere all round and we will return one day.Superb pub.

The Plough Inn, Hastings

After 13 years the pub is under new management. The old lot did a wonderful job and brought the locals together and created a great friendly vibe. This a pub that does serve the West Hill well although the new owners will be tested early on as all other pubs in the near vicinity have closed so there'll be a few dodgy characters wanting to spoil it for the regulars.
It could do with having a few new beers in alongside the regular lagers and guinness.Saturday nights are very popular with the regulars, top solo and duo acts,so hopefully that won't change as if it does one fears disasterous consequences.Keep the Plough alive everyone!

The Yew Tree Inn, Chalvington

Good little country pub that has a cricket pitch behind it,so in summer you can buy a pint and go watch a bit of Owzaaat!Up until the end of last year they had live music occasionally on fridays which was great, although a small boozer regulars would get up and dance and the atmosphere was great.I don't know why they stopped it.Food is pretty good although I had a sunday lunch there once which was disappointing...red cabbage and raisons....eeeughh!

The Calf, Clapham

Popped in just after Xmas in the hope that I'd see a few familiar faces from the past but alas not.Times move on.This place in the mid to late 90's was absolutely jumping. It was run by an Aussie called Glen and every Saturday there were two brill welsh guys in a band playing. There must have been 400 people plus in.Great atmospere, singalongs, never any trouble. When people were qeueing for drinks he'd have a bin full of cans and bottles so turnover was lighning fast. One new years eve there were over 500 people in here.Fantastic memories.Dodgy pint when I returned.Bar staff friendly enough but too young to remember the good old days.7/10 for the memories.
