Royal Oak, New Ash Green

Dreadful pub. Landlady has the charm of a scopion. With a group of people who were all drinking ale and wine, and I asked if I could have a cup of coffee and got the reply "what do you think this is, if you want coffee go to a cafe". And then proceed to lecture me on soft drinkers (I said I can't see the problem as she is charging nearly 3 for a pint of orange juice and my friend had just spent 32 on a round of drinks.) She wasn't joking either - I explained that as I could see the coffee menu I presumed it wasn't out of the question. For our sins we had to visit here for a few times and each time it got worse. The music got louder and more aggresive and the drinkers obviously very young - underage and out to get drunk! Fights yes, between two girls in loo. We now avoid the place as it has a repution again for gypsies and drugs.

The Nightingale, Worcester

Umm a strange one, stopped for lunch a few months ago - food okay we ate from the quick lunch menu. Didn't drink alcohol both had soft drinks. The problem was that it was a fairly bright sunny day and at 1.30 in the afternoon we couldn't see to read the menu's as the place was so badly lit. I hate to think what it would be like on a winters evening - we said if we come again we would bring our own candles!
Drove past a few days later to see that the place was closed - maybe they were having electricity installed!

March Hare, Broughton Hackett

Excellent carvery. Choice of pork, beef and turkey. Lovely fresh vegetables - they don't keep large amounts hanging around to go limp and dry. Eaten Fish and chips and the faggots here too, all good value. Never got to desserts as too full after main course.

Most importantly the beers are good too! Doesn't seem to be the place to spend the evening over a quiet pint, though there is a bar just for drinking to the left of the front door. Mainly people go here for a meal and I can't argue with that. At peak times booking is advisable.

Staff welcoming too.

Saracens Head, Worcester

A good mix of locals young and old - watched the footie outside in the heated smoking area. The staff excellent - the beers were not sampled but a good range of ales and lagers. Cider was the choice and boy was it devilishly good.

A good starting or ending point to the evening or just stay the whole night as there is plenty of banter and a good vibe.

The Waggon And Horses, Bewdley

From the outside this looked like the sort of pub I would drive past. But my partner needed refueling and I was in need of a wee. Neither were disappointed. He ended up having an excellent pint of Bathams, myself a coffee (I'm so pleased with pubs that don't cause a fuss when you ask for a coffee) and we both had the cheese and onion rolls for a late lunch (yummy). It was a lovely friendly local pub and it's on the list to return to.

The Bridge Hotel, Stanford Bridge

Called in on our recent whistle stop tour of pubs in worcs. It was very busy at 5.30 on a Friday. A lovely mix of locals and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Good selection of beers - though unable to sample any, my soda and lime and bag of crisps and pickled egg was great. I can see this becoming a favourite local along with The Fox down the road. I can give it 7 this time as didn't try the beer myself.

The Fox, Broadheath

Called in for a quick drink. I was in the driving seat so couldn't sample the ales on tap. My partner took two halves and was contented by both. The pub is a vast place but was very cosy, beams and comfy chairs. The locals were friendly and imagine that it would be a great place to spend the evening. We will return - and when we move to Worcester hope it's on a bus route ! Didn't sample the food - another time. I can only give it a 7 as I didn't personally try food or ales.

Yes it's a Wetherspoons - not somewhere you go for a quiet date but where you go for a) breakfast and a pint - I think the best in people and when I see people drinking at this time think they have been night workers on their way home and not alcholics who are already on their way to oblivion. b) a decent cheap coffee anytime of day and somewhere to wait in the warm for the train to Victoria c) somewhere to fill up on cheap grub when payday is still a week away d) somewhere to start the night on cheap booze before heading across the road to El Patio where prices are three times as much, and e) the place where the young ones go after work to pull the office slapper....

I give it a 5 as its not the worst and its not the best - the changing beer is generally of interest and you can usally find a comfy sofa to rest a while.

Crown, Sundridge Park

This pub closed down, then it became a gastro pub this has now closed down - which is a pity as it was somewhere to take friends who don't like pubs... if you know what I mean. Food was a bit over priced. Hence the place has now closed again.

Currently empty and the decorators are in and have said it will return as an Indian Restaurant - sounds good but will they serve a decent pint!

Still one of the best little locals in the county. Great staff and lovely atmosphere. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them. I love how the customer make up changes through out the afternoon - nicest time is later in the evening when it's the real locals but if you need any work doing - call in around 5 and you will find just the tradesman you need!

The Rose and Crown, Halstead

I called in with my bf this weekend. It has always been a treat to pop in for a pint of Larkins and a chat with the locals... we live 15 miles away but when we are in the area it is a must. Oh gosh, what has happened to the place where was everyone! The beer was okay but not up to its usual standard and not all pumps working. Being served was a hindrance for the barmaid or landlady - not sure which she was. The conversation from the other bar - there was one other customer other than us. We couldn't tell if it was the landlord or the customer with the mouth of a sewer. The foul language, racist comments and bragging about 'their time inside some of HMP's' was not really what we expected to hear - and no we were not evesdropping we had no choice - the big screen tv was blaring out and they were shouting above this in the end we left after less than 10 minutes as we couldn't get any response to our request for service.

In one word this pub has become a shadow of its former self and the notices about the opening of a new tea room and restaurant soon could hardly be more inappropriate - I don' t think ladies that take tea would feel at all comfortable around the current owners or customers!

Also just for the record I only ever feel like putting a comment when something has really provoked me - be it good service or in this case bad.

I would normally give this pub a mark of 8 but I feel that I need to take away 6 for the atmosphere or lack of welcoming atmosphere. I didn't try the food and feel relieved that the barlady didn't come back to take our order so we could leave and never return.

The Rifle Volunteers, Maidstone

This pub is a time warp - but great beer, love the crocheted seat cushions - not the place to go wild, but to sit and chat, contemplate and enjoy the quieter things of life over a pint of goachers.

Crown, Sundridge Park

You don't feel safe in here. I thought give it another go so walked in ...and walked straight back out again - it's such a shame as this is surely the thorn between the two roses - The Red Lion and The Prince Frederik. If you value your beer head for The Red Lion or The Freelands. I give it one point in the rating - for keeping the lager drinking, tracky mob out of the decent boozers.

I too have lived local to 'The Fred' for years - its a very nice pub, excellent staff and landlord and a really homely feel.
