The Duke Of York, Iddesleigh

What a wonderful pub. Friendly service, friendly locals. Real ale straight from the barrel. Excellent food. It really made our hols.

The Regent, Islington

Said it all in my review when it was still The Prince Regent. But I agree wholeheartedly with the other guys.

Come off it strongers. Think about where you are and the alternatives. Fair comment about the f.ing and blinding but thats the way it goes here abouts, most of the locals are Millwall supporters! As to the adverts, suggest, politely, they turn it down a bit and they will. I have always found the staff extremely aware of whose waiting and you can't say that of many pubs. Plasma screen? Just ask.

I sympathize with Nori. I remember this pub when there was a urinal just outside. The atmosphere was great and had a certain danger, crossing south of the river. Corporate interests and the general cynical upgrading of the south bank results in a pub that should be a beacon.

what about the stabbing?

eco-unfriendly patio bit is very welcome especially in the recent cold spell. Food is expensive as is the beer but you'd be hard put to find a nicer pub round here. Be on the outside and observe the world and if you are lucky the RSM students may sing for you.

Agree with planner_21.

I spent an hour talking with a local postman.

Its a local and I don't think they want it to be a boozer, but they have the right attitude that is being a friendly place to have a drink, maybe a meal (no pressure) and the jukebox is great (Type in 1801 on a regular basis).

Hello management!

Read the reviews.

This place is simply an extension of the hotel behind.

I used to love this place even when it had an outside lavvy. I think actually a bit of a classic.

I can only think money is coming in but frankly you have missed a wonderful opportunity. SAD SAD SAD

BoehmBarwerk hits the nail on the head. There is nothing wrong with staff or the presentation, even the owner, normally very hassled, can be friendly, but it is NOT A PUB.

The Pig and Butcher, Islington

Strange pub at lunchtime. One never knows if its open or not. Went there today at about 1:30. Doors open, tables ready outside, chef busily doing chef things. Waited 8 minutes and eventually a bemused chap said "we are not open 'til 3". "couldn't you let us know?" "Its not our policy". OK short trip to the better and more friendly Prince Regent.

The Cricketers Arms, Berwick

I like this pub and always make a point of visiting when in the Bighton area. All the previous comments hold and I think that the choice of food is too wide for such a small place (who needs tempura prawns?). If you want food order early as the queue gets excedingly long. I should also line up the beers as it can be a bit of a wait.

I can't entirely agree with davidb. Yes it serves food but at what is really a basic "need to get some food down me" level. It is not a restaurant (unlike Barnsbury next door). Yes they tend to serve fancy lagers and wine but I should point out that the pub here before which served good ales (sometimes) failed.

It is horses for courses and the lunch trade is the best I have seen since it ever, and I have worked here for 20 years.

We are in Islington and I think they've got it about right for the area.

I used to love going to this pub, and taking foreign guests there so they could experience the whole South Bank experience, but now I avoid it like the plaguey pit it was built on. Food is excerable, beer is beer and the service clearly reflects the staff's attitude to the management. Time for a change I think.

Refurbishments make this a really nice, bright pub now. Tastefully done but still in keeping with "local" traditions. Well done guys.

The Prince Regent Bar and Kitchen, Islington

New name is The Regent and they are doing very fine pizzas.Beer is normal Islington prices and they have a widish range of ales and lagers, including Perroni on tap. Opened this week so give them a chance, I need a pub close by.

The Prince Regent Bar and Kitchen, Islington

New something coming soon apparently, bar staff required!!

The Welby Arms, Allington

Slightly ambivalent about this place. The food was fine except that my vegetables arrived cold, the server very kndly took them away and once microwaved they were fine. Beer OK and the interior looked cosy but the whole place seems a little clinical.

20 Aug 2007 11:32

The Olive Branch and Beech House, Clipsham

This is not a pub but a decent restaurant with beer. On the pricey side but very good food. Booking for saturday lunch seems to be essential but we managed to sneek an open air table by arriving at 11:45.

Farmers Arms, Muker

Just want to concur with everyone. Great pub, friendly manager and staff and V good food and beer. It should also be pointed out that there are not many pubs in the area so a stop is absolutely necessary.

The Pig and Butcher, Islington

Just heard that the pub has been sold to a Russian company so watch this space for changes

27 Jul 2007 15:00

The Wickham Arms, Brockley

Glad to see the customers (and bar staff) taking no smoking seriously, even to the extent of sitting outside in torenntial hail storms.

The Hop and Berry, Islington

Oh and I saw a very grumpy Mel Smith drinking scotch and ale in here.

28 Jun 2007 14:00

The Hop and Berry, Islington

Used to be alot livelier as Houricans but as previous reviews have pointed out this is no longer a pub.

28 Jun 2007 13:57

The Florence Tavern, Islington

I only visit week lunchtimes but I like the general appearance and the Thai food. Staff are friendly although some of the customers can be gits. Fresh feel to the refurbishmnt but it still looks like an old fashioned pub, good stuff.

The Bunch of Grapes, London Bridge

I concur with the comments about the beer, which is well kept. The place can get very, very crowded especially on a Friday after work and some of the regulars seem to take a proprietorial view of the space they take up which causes some friction, but the bar staff are always alert and getting served, even when some fat regular is propping up the bar, never seems to be problem.

11 Jun 2007 10:24

The Wheatsheaf, Borough

I only pop in occasionally and it can get very crowded especially when the offices chuck out but the staff are pretty good at spotting the thirsty newcomer. Beers good and I like its pubby atmosphere.

Change is always difficult and familiarity is what a lot of us want. I have known this pub for 30 odd years and apart from a few changes it has remained the same. It is a good local, with friendly (usually) staff and the managers have been very attentive to their customers.

I worry about the changes for several reasons but they are all selfish. I will miss the pubby atmosphere and my wife might see me through the window when I'm sneeking out for a quicky. The pub is moving with the times (and the house prices in the area)but it is sad to see a trad pub go modern.

Still we all need to move on so good luck Ted, and thanks for the drink.

The Pig and Butcher, Islington

Re Last entry, the manager must have had a bad day because I have always found him affable and interested. I don't go in the evening so it may be the atmosphere changes at night. I agree about the price of the food.

The Bridge Bar, London Bridge Station

Looks like it has closed down due to the lease running out. It must surely return in a new form.

1 Jun 2007 09:59

The Wickham Arms, Brockley

The last comment may become more relevant in the coming days. Owners son has now taken over and the atmosphere amongst the locals is wary at best. Still like it though but there is little choice around here.

11 Apr 2007 09:23

Boadicea, Charing Cross Station

Come on guys. This pub allows one to experience the meths drinking culture of the area in a safe environment.

6 Dec 2006 09:10

The Bridge Bar, London Bridge Station

Regular in here for obvious reasons. V expensive but not that surprising because of its location. Bar staff can be very very very slow. The terrace outside is useful for keeping an eye on the trains but it would help if they had some control over who sits there, it is often filled with Macdonalds eating commuters just having a sit down, irritating when you've just spent 3 on a stella.

6 Dec 2006 09:03

The Wickham Arms, Brockley

Further to JamesW's query, only if you think a roll is food. Although they do lay on stuff for special events (mostly funerals recently). Furthermore I would agree with clive, there are some really, really good musicians visiting.

28 Nov 2006 16:41

The Lamb Tavern, Leadenhall Market

Not been in a while but always visit when in the area. I like the beer and the basement bar brings back lots of memories. Suits? Your in the f*ing City!!!

28 Nov 2006 16:25

The Mitre, Islington

This pub really stinks. I don't mean it is rubbish but that you can smell the stale oil half way down upper street.

6 Oct 2006 12:07

The Pig and Butcher, Islington

I seem to spend a lot of lunchtimes here and it is a decent place to have a drink. Food is a bit pricey although par for the Islington course. Tables outside if you are happy to be killed by the Liverpool Road fumes.

3 Jul 2006 16:16

The Prince Regent Bar and Kitchen, Islington

It looks like I was right to worry. The pub has closed down.

6 Dec 2005 15:38

The Prince Regent Bar and Kitchen, Islington

I agree with all the below BUT I am worried that the fact it is now closed weekday lunchtimes indicates that it is heading in the same way as all the other pubs/clubs/restaurants that have cropped up here over the last 15 years.

Lets hope not.

7 Sep 2005 16:13

The Wickham Arms, Brockley

I'm a regular in here (too close to home) and generally agree with the positive points. A good place to come if your a builder looking for work!!

Thank god pubs like this exist.
