The Bat and Ball, Leigh

I visited this pub many times from the 1980's onwards until it closed a few years back.
Loverly ladies running it great food & beers.
Always avoided the Fleur up the road a dump.
Unfortunately the mob there now have it all their own way since the Bat & Ball closed.
Its run by a bunch of crooks The menu outside does not state 10% SERVICE ADDED TO THE BILL BUT WHEN INSIDE THE MENU PROVIDED STATES 10% SERVICE.

The Old Jail, Cudham

A favouite of mine some 10yrs ago
Visited this week Oh dear whats gone wrong?
It may have looked like the picture about 10yrs ago not any more Badly needs some TLC inside & out .
The baguette I was served looked as if it had been defrosted in the micro & not even seen the oven to give it some colour .Made staff aware of problem Nobody returned to discuss
Looked in the kitchen I'm wondering how many "Stars" Bromley awarded the kitchen !!!
AVOID

The Royal Oak, Crockham Hill

Went here with a Ramblers group.
Excellent range of well kept beers.
Great Service & the food is exceptional.Beautiful granary bread with a selection of ham beef chicken all served with a fresh side salad with a lovely dressing drizzled over.Compare this with most of the competition of blotting paper supermarket bread filled with plasic meat & a bit of dead lettuce.
WE SHALL RETURN

The George and Dragon, Downe

Went here with a large group of Ramblers .Ordered lunch 3 hrs before arrival.
What a SHAMBLES.Place was empty.Soup just about covered bottom of soup bowl FOR NEARLY 5.Complained About half portion brought in a jug.Chips inedible.Asked for mayonnaise to acompany salad STILL WAITING
Are new people running this place ???.
won't be back thats for sure.plenty of good locations around

The Castle Inn, Chiddingstone

Based on the recommendations applicable to the Castle 20 of us Ramblers went on a pre-arranged visit last Wednesday week .
What a dissapointment.Guinness draught either off or not stocked.Ales on tap were excellent .However home made soup tasteless served in a tiny bowl with 2 small pieces of bread for circa 6
Sandwiches good wholemeal bread with 1 watercress leaf on top an egg cup of crisps no salad accompanyment at all Again circa 6.Served on a piece of "Slate" Whats wrong with plates?
Left feedback with Management. Most establishments in the area serve sandwiches with a good fresh dressed salad & about a 1 a time cheaper.
We noted that without us the pub would have been empty. On this showing this group won't be back Suggest "Lessons need to be learned" Look at what the competition is doing !!!

The Chaser, Shipbourne

Well worth a visit.Service & food excellent.Best sandwiches I've eaten in yonks.Lovely granary bread with an excellent side salad .

The Bucks Head, Godden Green

Lovely location & without doubt a lot has been done to upgrade the menu choice.
Thats fine if you want main meals.Regrettably not the case with the boring poor value sandwiches that are served on awful White or brown supermarket steamed bread. For 5 a time lets see some decent wholemeal / granary on the menu along with a choice of hot baguettes.Thats what the competition is providing.Suggest new owners take a trip up the road to the Chaser Inn ."Lessons need to be learned"

The Kent Hounds, Well Hill

Unfortunately you will be out of luck at the Rock & Fountain too.
The Chef there ended up between a Rock & a hard place.

The Ship Inn, Lower Upnor

Having tried most ofthe pubs in Upnor this one comes out tops.Good ales well kept.Nice clean bar & Restaurant.Staff wecoming & v efficient.Top marks to the chef/cook For the excellent quality of the fish (buys from Whitstable)The prices are fair given the quality. Most establishments use frozen fish fillets The ship serves fresh & it shows.
WELL DONE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

The Bush, Aylesford

Having heard that this establishment was under new management I was disappointed to find the pub not very clean. No separate restaurant all meals serviced in a scruffy bar area. The meals served were lukewarm Avoid the Chicken pasta bake with salad."Gloopy" white sauce covering 6 thumb nail bites of chicken served lukewarm The salad consisted of a miniscule amount of iceberg lettuce & 2 tomatoes.I've had better salad with a round of sandwiches in other establishments.
What is more worrying is the fact that the place is "Under New Management".
My recco is travel another 5 mins to W Farleigh or 15 to Upnor wonderful food at both locations clean & great value.

The Fox and Hounds, Toys Hill

10 for a ploughmans ...A mixed orange juice & tonic 3

THE OWNERS ARE NUTS!!
The last pub to get continuous awful reviews due to "Landlord Attitude"was the Kentish Hounds at Well Hall.Look what happened to that .Closed & now a private house.

With a bit of luck come next year it will go the same way

The Tickled Trout, West Farleigh

I have been to the Tickled Trout for the past three years with friends for lunch
Wonderful range of good ales .Very comfortable restaurant nice to see things retained in the olde style.
The Tues & Thurs menus are fantastic At least 2 roasts home made pies & puddings with fresh fish to choose from Desserts to die for all home made & many seasonal specials .I had at easter Bread & Butter Pudding made with a hot x buns FANTASTIC.
Staff have been consistantly the most friendly & efficient in the County.
Well done we look forward to many more years of fine dining.
Percy my regular guest agrees with my views 100%

5 Aug 2009 23:10

The Tigers Head, Chislehurst

Unfortunately the Tigers seems to be going through a bit of a downer at the moment.
2 weeks before Xmas on a Monday night all specials on board off .However decided on a steak served totally raw but put right .
On the following Saturday fiends chose vegetarian which was served with "cabbage" & a jug of "gloopy sauce" The fish pie devoid of fish.Staff all great even given a full refund but it does spoil the evening out & you go home hungry.
i must add though staff are excellent.
Perhaps its just the "Xmas deluge" that caused the prob I look forward to reading better reviews in the New year & return based on favourable reports

Plough, Borough Green

Based on last review went last Sunday.Good range of ales Harveys excellent & reasonable price.Enjoyed fantastic Roast Beef best I've eaten in years Well done Landlady & Chef keep up the good work

Chequers, Crouch

I planned to visit as loction is loverly .Could only find a bad review on Google circa Summer 2007.
So while in the area on Sunday went to the Plough just up the road. I asked locals if the Chequers was worth a visit. The replies were "Don't bother its closed" Say no more say no more!!!

4 Jan 2009 18:57

The Woodman, Farnborough

I suspect a change of ownership has taken place.Have visited over the years anyone remember when it was the "Brocks Sett"
Prices are very ott A pint of Spitfire now 3 yet Harveys at the "Jailhouse" still 2.85 SAY NO MORE

26 Feb 2008 18:34

The Tickled Trout, West Farleigh

What a beautifully kept pub.Very friendly helpful staff.Good selection well kept beers Stella,Flowers & Spitfire excellent.Definately upmarket menu but with traditional English items of Cottage pie ,Steak Pudding as well as steaks & wonderful range of fish.Considering the quality of the food & the service this establishment in my book is "5 STAR".
I plan to return with a big appetite and try the 16oz T Bone steak WOW!!

15 Sep 2007 22:10

The British Queen, Locksbottom

The "Queens of The Crown" reckon theirs is the best in Chislehurst"

14 Jun 2007 22:56

Two Brewers, Shoreham

Had a terrible meal here in 2005 on Mothers day.
Went back last week & believe its changed hands.Pity they haven't reviewed range of beers Does anyone drink Courage ???.Otherwise boring old "Spitfire"
Someone asked if they could bring dog in refused by barman who then proceeded to smoke his fag outside the bar.Wonder what he will do on the 1st July.

Have been going to Kings Arms round the corner since 2005 where you can get fabulous "Harveys" .Has a good outdoor area & range of food is gt to.

11 Jun 2007 20:11

The Fox and Hounds, Toys Hill

I think this establishment falls into the category of "Gastropub" Very friendly staff & landlord.Excellent well kept beers. Nice to see & enjoy fresh fish specials along with a good variety of other dishes on the menu.
Very pleasant well kept garden even the toilets were immaculate.
As a keen walker this is an ideal location to stop off for refreshments before continuing through the wonderful surrounding countryside

1 Jun 2007 20:44

The Bulls Head, Chislehurst

Lounge bar very pleasant Now non smoking .Well cared for Youngs range.Service very attentive & food good.

Felt really at home must be the recco that its a "Tory" stronghold haunted by 4 x 4 drivers

Mine was the black one with big bullys & the cow horns ...........YEEEEEEE...HA

21 May 2007 20:15

The Ramblers Rest, Chislehurst

So whats the latest??The pic doesn't show any pot holes.I lost a friend down one last year he was missing 3 days.He won't buy a 4x4 so wont go back.
Is Bombadier still available.& hows the food.

13 May 2007 22:07

The Bullfinch, Riverhead

Anyone going to the Bullfinch will have a bit of a wait for lunch. Its closed up with hoarding outside saying "OPENING SUMMER BY GARIBALDI"

13 May 2007 21:54

The Sovereign of the Seas, Petts Wood

one year on & still reports are that the toilets "stink" Let me know when its had a "Makeover" & I wont need a peg on the nose.Wonder if the Chief Exec Tim Martin knows ????

13 May 2007 21:45

The Old Jail, Cudham

popped in with a friend for a lunch on the 5 May.
Great to see same happy faces behind the bar & doing the catering. All very attentive.
Still good well kept ales namely Spitfire & the incredible Harveys
We both enjoyed sizzling hot flavoursome lasagne with salad & baguettes.as well as a rib eye baguette with salad.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ITS APPRECIATED

13 May 2007 21:33

The Tigers Head, Chislehurst

THIS OLDE WORLD BEAMED PUB (part of the spirit group)USED TO BE EXCELLENT
BUT OH DEAR WHAT HAS GONE WRONG SINCE IT RE-OPENED AFTER A RE-FURB ON THE 27 APRIL.IT WAS GOOD THAT IT HAS GONE TOTAL NON SMOKING AND A DEFINATE IMPROVEMENT WITH THE NEW GARDEN FURNITURE.
THE STAFF ARE STILL EXCELLENT BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT ENDS THERE.THE STEAK FILLED BAGUETTES ETC HAVE ALL GONE UP IN PRICE AS HAVE OTHER ITEMS ON THE MENU.IT LOOKS LIKE PRICES HAVE BEEN "JACKED UP" TO PAY FOR THE RE-FURB.THE STRONG COFFEE SERVED IN FILTER JUGS FOR 1.25 HAS GONE NOW ITS LATTE AMERICANO CAPPUCHINO STARTING AT 1.60.

WHEN I WROTE TO THE "BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER" VOICING MY CONCERNS I RECEIVED A SHORT RESPONSE FROM MR CARBONI STATING THAT THE "NEW MENU & PRICES HAVE BEEN CENTRALLY DRIVEN FROM HEAD OFFICE"
ANOTHER CONCERN WAS THAT FOR SOME WEEKS PRIOR TO THE RE-FURB NO HAND DRYERS WERE WORKING IN THE TOILETS AFTER THE RE-FURB STILL NOT WORKING .MR CARBONI RESPONSE..... "THE FAULT HAD BEEN LOGGED FOR REPAIR IN THE FUTURE" !!!!!!.
IN THE MEANTIME I SUGGEST 1)TAKE SOME PAPER TOWELS FOR THE LOO 2)DONT BOTHER WITH COFFEE GO ROUND THE CORNER TO THE BULLS HEAD HOTEL FILTER COFFEE IN THE LOUNGE BAR 1 AND YOU GET FREE BISCUITS.

13 May 2007 21:22

The Old Jail, Cudham

Went to The old Jail for my birthday in March Rib eye cooked as usual to perfection.Friends had Sizzling chicken finished off with bread & butter pudding ,crumble & Ice cream .All washed down with copious amounts of Harveys.Even the coffee at the end was excellent.
Service from all staff tops.

The Daylight Inn, Petts Wood

Hi Norgor

Commiserations over this establishment. The only alternative is to go out of town.Fortunately that other "Hell hole" The Kent Hounds closed last year so the risk factors are somewhat reduced
Hasta La Vista

28 May 2006 21:32

The Ramblers Rest, Chislehurst

Best pub in Chislehurst retains all the olde pub flavour without any of those "fancy makeovers"
The "Bombadier" is so well kept a beer to die for no wonder they won an award. This place is a real treasure look after it

Big Robbo

28 May 2006 20:47

The Fox and Hounds, Toys Hill

I used to visit this pub with rambling friends some years back then it was Good ale & basic snacks. After a ramble one Sunday a week ago I visited this pub What hit me first was that a pint of ale & a draught Guinness cost me 6.Studying the menu Plenty of food circa 15 a throw but zilch the way sanwiches rolls etc.Still I suppose having spent mega bucks on doing the old place up ones got to make a living.Must be good as it was heaving .Wonder what its like on a Monday??

14 May 2006 19:25

The Malt Shovel Inn, Eynsford

I dont know how they get away with the "Restaurant prices" they charge in this pub
I had a meal here some years back & paid 16 for a bottle of wine same label from Safeways charged 3.99 a 400% mark up I wont be back

8 Mar 2006 20:27

The Olde George Inn, Shoreham

Anyone remeber "Lionel" and his family running this establishment back in the 1960's when the public bar was separate with a roaring fire in the corner & lionel won the window boxes comp every year.
Move away and would like to re visit any info on beer/food welcome

8 Mar 2006 20:20

The Sovereign of the Seas, Petts Wood

This establishment would benefit from a good manager & regular staff I dread to think what the turnover is.The biggest problem is the toilets.I dont think they have had a makeover since it opened.
We all know the food is boil in the bag microwave but if its from a good source then quality can be maintained.I found the lamb shank with fresh veg + traditional pudding excellent.

8 Mar 2006 20:09

The Daylight Inn, Petts Wood

This establishment has the highest prices you are likely to encounter anywhere.

8 Mar 2006 20:03

The Kent Hounds, Well Hill

Yes I was a regular visitor on Sundays to this locationback in the mid 60's
When the new The new landlord tookover I was refused a top up on an excessive guinness pint.I never went back.He was the most grumpy individual I have ever met with one of todays entreprenures the location was ideal for a "gastropub" Instead its sold off probably for re-development

8 Mar 2006 20:01

The Ramblers Rest, Chislehurst

I used to visit the Ramblers fairly reg over the past 3 years and remember the "Chubby" young man who worked behind the bar & Jean the barmaid.Range off beers always excellent.
However something seems to have happened to the food. They use to serve lovely whole grain bread from the village baker .Last time I went it was steamed supermarket sliced brown yuk!!For the increased prices sorry not worth it.
Competition in Chislehurst is fierce .Try Tigers Head ,The Bulls Head Inn or the Crown newly refurbished.
Must do better.

8 Mar 2006 18:07

The Billet, Sittingbourne

I was interested to see this establishment based on the changes made.
I must say the bar area is very pleasing clean & light not at all cramped.Good real ale & served in oversize glasses a real bonus.
Restaurant nice not cramped & "NO SMOKING" great to enjoy the food without tobacco flavouring.
On to the menu Traditional 3 course sunday roast with excellent starters.Roast beef not really anything to write home about .The roast potatoes appeared to be deep fried .Vegetables excellent.Unfortunately the seets on the chalkboard were a bit of a letdown no traditiona puddings at all only ice cream merimgue or a fudge cake (very sickly) My suspicions are that deserts were all from Brake Brothers (All frozen)
However we finished the meal with an excellent cup of coffee.
One thing I was surpised at was the cost of wines all seemed to be about 14 "in a pub ??" I think a mark up of 400% high.

8 Mar 2006 17:57

The Old Jail, Cudham

This establishment just gets better & better.
Rib eye steaks cooked to perfection
Beautiful roast beef for a Sunday lunch as well as traditional puddings to die for.
Even a basic lunch of warm peppered breast of chicken with sliced new potatoes mixed salad leaves with fresh tomatoes and cucumber not forgetting french bread & butter was so hearty I had to go to the swimming pool to burn off the excess energy.Of course none of this would be possible without the service provided by the excellent team of staff.Long may it continue to thrive.
