The Post Office Vaults, Birmingham

Can merely echo comments below. great little place, slight shame about the premises. IT really MUST be said however, that free-of-tie places in central Brum are rarer than hen's teeth, and it would be impossible to attempt this through a pubco (Ilooklikeme: this is probably why the prince of Wales, great pub that it could be, was not considered) Beer is always superb.

The Royal Oak, Rusper

My partner and I regularly travel here from Streatham in S London, and adore it.
To me, its idiosyncracy is a great strength, ensuring it stands out from the crowd.
I've always found the beer here to be excellent, both in terms of cellarmanship and choice, so it really SHOULD be in the beer guide. If the local branch don't like Sara, that's their affair, but completely irrelevant.
Local branch, GET A GRIP!

The Buffet Bar, Stalybridge

Well worth missing a train for. This place has been a legend for decades, and deservedly so. Bags of atmosphere, a great range of great beer, victorian charm and much railwayana, and the (very cheap) food is recommended. I regularly go miles out of the way just to drop in.

The Blue Bell Inn, Halkyn

Smashing place, called in for a quickie on way home from hols in N. Wales; ended up having four! Very friendly, knowledgeable landlord, who obviously has a passion for his beer and his pub. Breathtaking views. Will definitely call again.

The Kings Arms, Hawkshead

Spent time here on a couple of occasions, while camping nearby at the Croft campsite. Great beer, atmosphere, food, location, music (on Thurs eve); all in all a lakeland classic. Ate the saddle of Herdwick lamb first time I was here, which was superb.
It wasn`t on second time, but I suspect because it was seasonal.

The Furzedown Pub, Streatham

A great place to stay thirsty. I had the misfortune to visit the Furzedown on the first Sunday in June 2011. I walked there in the rain, as I had noticed that they'd refurbished and rebranded.
I stood at the bar waiting for a drink with a note in hand looking expectant, but was totally ignored. They had 3 staff on, and though they were holding a function in the room at the back, weren't really that busy. The young barman greeted a friend as he entered, and proceeded to serve him straightaway, despite my standing right next to him and obviously waiting. There are other pubs within walking distance that have far more warmth and are much better run- use them instead!

The Royal Oak, Rusper

I'm another that doesn't get here as often as I'd like (I live in Streatham, S London) but when I do visit I always vow to make the effort more often. Fantastic beer and cider/perry, the sandwiches are about the best anywhere, and I never seem to fail to get drawn into an interesting conversation sitting at the bar. If more pubs were like this , there perhaps wouldn't be so many closing up and down the country.
First class!
