The Antelope, Tooting

Tooting Village Ahoy!
It seems that since our last post The Antelope has managed three things:
1. We have opened the kitchen.
2. Sales have gone through the roof.
3. A certain demographic have had one's feathers ruffled.
To recap, we are serving good food at honest prices; the ale is still well kept; the games room with pool, big screen and darts is operational and the staff are anything but rude. Humouring of the old school may be lacking somewhat but then there is a new set to satisfy.
We work hard and try to cover all bases, we wish no harm to anyone.
Like it or not, the suburb has become a Village.

The Antelope, Tooting

Hey ho folks of Tooting Village!
The Antelope is now 3 weeks old, and this week we have new real ales (so that's Gale's HSB, TT Landlord, Ruddles Best bitter and Hopback Summer Lightning).
Also we are now serving hot handmade sausage rolls on the bar, to tide us all over until our kitchen opens at the end of this month!
We'll be serving classic British dishes, great Sunday roasts and desserts to die for.
New bathrooms open this Friday and the back bar room will be ready to sit in and have drinks - which is great because we have been really busy the last couple of Friday and Saturday nights...we need the extra space!
We'll keep you updated as to when the garden, kitchen and function room open, but it should be by the last week of August. Work is progressing fast.
So, please post here with any useful feedback, good or bad...we appreciate it.
Cheers all,
The Antelope x

Balham Bowls Club, Balham

Good beers, very cool decor and I think the staff are pretty good actually.
Balham, though, is slowly getting as impatient and high maintenance as Clapham. With so many good bars thou should all be much more content.

The Antelope, Tooting

(The) Antelope will be opening for drinks in early July.
Due to the extent of the refurb, there will be no food served at first but an open kitchen will be serving amazing fresh food a.s.a.p. (including late food service on Friday and Saturdays).
Couple this with decent tap beers and ales, a great wine list, great customer service and a new welcoming atmosphere - and you have a proper pub with the bonus of Antic's trademark sympathetic decor.
If you have any ideas or suggestions please let us know! Richard.

The Thomas Cubitt, Belgravia

Rob the big bar man is a legend, he always makes us laugh and gives great customer service.
Top pub, in a brilliant location.

The GlassHouse, New Malden

Good pub if you like wine and food.
Bad if you are a pikey.
That is good for me.
10/10

The North Pole, North Kensington

NIce pub in a stark, slightly strange part of London.
The BBC near-by means media types for lunch and after work drinks and then a more desolate local crowd later at night. So expect a very eclectic demographic which is how a boozer should be.
It sells very nice grub (especially the burgers) and the beer offering is pretty decent.
The Xmas tree this year is bleedin huge which is good as it makes one feel cosy and toasty as you walk in the door.
The only complaint is that there are telly boxes on the walls. Why do people need to watch T.V. down the pub? I have an idea....Have a conversation!!!! Oh, maybe it's the BEEB lot wanting to watch their handy craft after work. Nice one Auntie.
(9/10)

The Selkirk, Tooting

The Kirk is my local and I love it.
The staff are cool and fun and beer is good.
If anything the pub looks alot cleaner that it has in donkey's years.
The Xmas decor is tasteful and the music is bloody marvellous.
I had a burger there on Monday and it was very very nice.
I also had too much beer, but hey what's new?

The Tooting Tram & Social, Tooting

Cannot fault this big old bugger of a bar. Ace decor, toilets and music - ok drinks range and the food will probably be pretty darn good as well.
The only gripe I have is I wish they were not so near the pub I run. Ha Ha! Oh, well you can't win 'em all! Good luck to them, except they really don't need it. A class act. 10/10.

The Long Room Bar and Hotel, Tooting

Had a nice Sunday lunch there today. Nice polite staff and food was fine. Shame it was so deathly quiet. I hope it picks up for their sakes. Really good toilets are a plus point.

Rehab, Colliers Wood

They tried to make me go to Rehab and I said...yes, yes, yes.
Great place. 8/10

The Trafalgar Arms, Tooting

As an alternative from where I spend the vast majority of my time and money, a few bevvies in the Traf' proved to be a bit of a laugh on Wednesday night.
Nice manager and good mix of punters and even Karaoke blasting out.
O.K. the old dude mumbling out "Angels" is so cliche it hurts but the two super sexy guys who sung "Total Eclipse of the Heart" rocked! Great fun. Good luck to Mark and co in a vastly improved boozer.
:)

The Manor Bar & Grill, Tooting

Nicest manager seen around these parts in ages.Top fella!

De Garre, Bruges

Really top watering hole...get in there early or go very late to avoid super busy times.
Doesn't seem to have changed it's bier portfolio since last time I was here over 2 years ago, but hey who cares when they stock so many delicious brews! 10 / 10 . Oh and you still get free cheese!

live lounge, Leeds

OK. Here's the deal. Amazingly made cocktails in a relativly ponce and nonce free bar. It's a small but perfectly decorated bar in a side street of Camden.
The guys behind the bar seriously know their stuff.
And, yes they do sell bottled beer so stop having a spaz out boys! The sub line to B.I.T.E. is "pubs, BARS, drinking...."
My gripes about the place on my visit is that with skill and know-how comes a distinct bravado & arrogance from the staff - esp the owner. This can come across as quiet rude and dismissive.
Whilst waiting for my cocktails (20 mins on a quiet early Sat evening) I was treated to great displays of bar magic but also had glass chipped in my face from over zealous glass stacking and thank Christ I didn't wear a white shirt considering all the ingredients I got splashed with.
The music was excellent but about 5 notches too loud. I felt like my hard of hearing Dad and deaf Uncle at family get-togethers struggling to hear any of the conversation. Just getting old I guess.
All in all a positive experience and muchos kudos for the cocktail knowledge. Good but not yet great. 7/10.

The Kings Head, Tooting

I would say that best pub in Tooting is pushing it somewhat.
Amazing old building and ok for a footie match if that's your bag.
Otherwise there are far superior places to frequent in Tooting.
Food here is ok.
Poor outside area. It's a patio bordering a main road (lovely).
For a more rewarding experience all round see The Garden House, The Long Room, The Selkirk or The Rose and Crown.
6/10.

The Market Porter, Borough

This pub really is worth the effort to visit.
Not only has it a fab range of ales (well kept) but has great staff and nice atmosphere.

It was great to see a pub catering for everyone - City gents, students, market workers and even a couple of proper old CAMRA boyz with their crazy beards and illfitting beer tshirts, were spotted drinking side by side.

Top notch London boozer.

The Prince of Teck, Earls Court

Went here the other day. It's a grand old place full of life and lots of hotties to perv over!
The manager is the tall fella I think and he is lovely, seems to be a bit of a comedian though.
I laughed my head off when I said that he had his thumb on my steak. He replied "that's to make sure it doesn't fall on the floor again".
Ha ha!

9/10, brilliant place.

The Manor Bar & Grill, Tooting

We had a nice meal in here on bank holiday Monday night. The place was a little quiet but we ergo had a good table and were served nice drinks and food. I had a well cooked steak and the wife had nice fishcakes. Nice grub, decent pub.

The Defector's Weld, Shepherds Bush

Met the wife at T.D.W. on Wednesday then met some more pals later, then on to a gig. Had some okayish pie and mash, did the job. IPA was a bit tangy but they changed it without question. Quite fit ladies behind the bar. So, pretty much did the job, considering the location.
Decor, dreary? Yes, but tastefully done. To be quite honest though, I rarely rely on pub decor to make my night. Good conversation with pals is usually much more fun than worrying about the colour scheme of the walls.

The Manor Bar & Grill, Tooting

Having never frequented the previous incartnation of this pub "The George" I cannot comment on how it used to be....
"Garden House" as it is now known seems to be a nice looking pub on the inside with plenty of dark wood (floors, furniture, bar) and leather. It has now got an okay outside area in the back which might be nice if a little bit of TLC was applied to it.
There are plenty of alcoves and snugs to coop up with pals or a loved one and potentially has the makings of a nice boozer.
It was a quiet Monday night when I popped in, so like most pubs in the area it was a bit vacuous, I'll try again on a weekend to review proper. I agree with the previous comment though the manager,Tate is a really nice bloke and has the right attitude to make the place work.
Ta muchly.

The Clarence, Balham

The Clarence is a nice bar/pub and has many good qualities; attentive staff, nice beer range, eclectic decor, an uncomplicated menu and an understated confidence in what it provides. This is worthy of many brownie points. I do feel, though, that there is something missing there and I can't quite put my finger on it. Myself & two friends went there on a gorgeous summers evening, expecting to be amazed but were left feeling hollow & cold. Will try again soon.
I should imagine it's location helped win it pub of the year award from the Evening Standard. Blimey, even Waitrose wants to be in Balham now. Rather!

8 Jun 2006 12:16

The White Hart, Crystal Palace

Obviously the best pub in Palace....it's bound to get a few naff reviews 'cos there are so many dozy sods frequenting the area. They work hard at this bar, serve very interesting and tasty beer, and yes, the food could be improved but the general ambience is spot on. If you want a pint of lame beer then there are loads of other rubbish pubs in the area to choose from. Gets my vote - 8/10. Cheers chaps and chill-blains!

The Bay View, Swansea

Who cares whether the comments are good or bad...just count how many comments there are. That says alot.
Me and a dozen mates were up for my stag do last weekend and happened to end up in here for a bit in the afternoon. Had some nice food (been to Thailand last year and can say that The Bay View's grub is superb), were looked after so well by the staff and landlord that after an attempt at doing the Mumble's mile we piled back here as all the Mumble's pubs were crap (either Welsh nationalist hovels or horrible touristy, souless venues). Swansea has a real asset here in the Bay View and I wish Matt and co all the best for the future. Not that they'll need luck when they are so good at what they do. Thanks a million for a great weekend, Richard and co!

Hoochimama's Bar Bistro, Tooting

Service has improved of late, as has food quality. Just a pity there are so many tap beers run out at any one time!

20 Apr 2006 10:32

The Kings Head, Tooting

Not a bad pub, I am a bit agrieved that they stopped selling Belgian beer, but hey you can't have it all.
Last time I ate here the food was a bit ropey but I hear it has improved slightly since then.
If you are in Tooting this is a good'un, but you should also check out the newly refurbished Selkirk down the road, worth a look aswell.

The Selkirk, Tooting

Getting better; nice beer, nice food, nice tunes, nice vibe, nice garden, nice staff, nice sofas, nice roasts, nice wine. Would I be wrong to call it nice?

9 May 2005 16:12

De Garre, Bruges

This is a superb bar with table service only, so it feels like it should be serving food. You do get free Trappiste cheese with the awesome beer though! Tucked down an alleyway, this is still on the tourist hotbed of Bruges's main streets, but is hidden enough to feel like a "find". Top notch!
There is another bar which sells even more types of beer about 10 minutes walk from De Garre, but I was too gantered to log the name in my brain. I shall be back in Bruges this year for some more beer loving! C.A.M.R.A. can blow me when they harp on about English ales.Belgium shoots them and their watery, lame litte brews, down in flames. Vive le Grimbergen.
