Willow Walk, Victoria

If this is such a crap pub, why do they have such loyal and intelligent bar staff? I've no idea why the Lovely Lydia, fluent in more languages than you can even dream of, would want to work here. But she does!

The Jugged Hare, Pimlico

This pub underwent something of a revival when Magda was running it. I'm sorry I didn't write a review then - I suppose you take it a bit for granted when it's going all right. Now they seem to have let the local drunks take the place over. Just recently I was hassled by a rather manacing drunk at a nearby cash dispenser. I managed to shake him off, went and did a bit of shopping and dropped into the Jugged Hare for a pint. Lo and behold, the same drunk was rolling around the pub pestering the customers. The bar staff were clearly aware how drunk he was, but were cheerfully serving him more alcohol, even though he could barely stand or put a sentence together. When I pointed out the obvious, they just shrugged. I'm sure Magda would have given him the bum's rush without hesitation. The beer's still quite good though.

The Prince of Wales, Kensington

I have recently discovered this pub, and I have to tell you that some of the reviews I have read are a lot of gentlemen's genitals. On each occasion I have visited this pub, the service has been prompt and attentive. On each occasion I have opted for the Adnam's Broadside, which has been very well cellared. I did observe that the staff had to put up with a bunch of drunks who complained about everything. Perhaps these were some of the people who have complained about allegedly bad service? I must say that I admired the patience and restraint of the staff with these people.

By the way, does anyone not agree that Simona must surely be the most beautiful barmaid in London? Why is she working in a bar, for heaven's sake? I would like to give her modelling agency a good kick up the backside.

The Nags Head, Covent Garden

Popped in on Boxing Day, actually hoping to see some football. Nothing doing unfortunately. The screen was even covered up with a blackboard displaying the menu.

My disappointment was very short-lived, however, as they had a super-delicious festive stout on tap (with a hint of chocolate). As a fan of Young's Chocolate Stout, I have to admit that this brew is superior. It was so good that it took three whole pints to explore every nuance of it.

I know this seems to be my theme, but where do they get all these drop-dead-gorgeous barmaids from? This tall, willowy blonde girl (who MUST have a modelling contract) walked in to be greeted with the predictably swivelling heads (mine included, obviously) and then she turns up behind the bar pulling pints of Country! Back in the summer they had a stunning Swedish girl behind the bar who I ran across in October serving in a bar in Sydney. Small world, huh?

Willow Walk, Victoria

The Willow Walk has just reopened after yet another refurbishment that results in it looking almost exactly the same as before. They have, however, put in a ramp for disabled customers, and they have also thoughtfully created a new and deceptive step for the able-bodied ones to fall down! I can only think that they want to increase the number of disabled customers so that the ramp gets some use occasionally.

Anyway, once you have massaged your twisted ankle, the WW is still hands down the best pub for real ale anywhere near Victoria. As usual at this time of year, they are stocking a great selection of 'festive' ales. And I'm pleased to note that JDW have re-introduced the loaded nachos that they inexplicably removed from the menu a few months ago (albeit brought back in a slightly disguised form as a 'shared Mexican Platter' or somesuch). But it's good to see that they learn from their mistakes.

For some reason, the WW keeps producing absolute stars among the bar staff. The lovely and super-efficient Emily may have moved on (though only as far as the Victoria Island I believe), but her absence is more than made up for by the equally lovely and super-efficient Rachel, who also happens to be a dead ringer for Lucy Davis (Dawn from 'The Office', in case you didn't know). No bad thing in my humble opinion!

The Blue Posts, Soho

Blimey, Albert. You get around, don't you? I bet there aren't too many pubs like this in Keighley?

The Moon Under Water, Leicester Square

Yet another pub that insists on closing three minutes early. Why three minutes, for God's sake? Not only that, but as has already been observed, they throw you out long before the statutory drinking-up time as well! One barman even made the amazing claim that the 20 minutes is counted from last orders!

I can't believe that Tim Martin would condone these odious practices if he were aware of them. I think it's time there was a camaign for 'full time' just as there was a campaign for full pints!

The Jugged Hare, Pimlico

OK, it is a bit lacking in atmosphere. But it's about the only place in the area where you can go for a quiet drink on a Saturday night! Also, it being a Fullers pub, there's always a decent beer to be had.

It's got a lot going for it. It should be more popular than it is. I think it could be successful under the right management.

The Lord Moon Of The Mall, Whitehall

Like it says at the top of the page, you shouldn't take some of these reviews too seriously. This is definitely my favourite watering hole in the Trafalgar Square area and it's well run too. I was in there tonight. There were at least eight decent real ales on tap. Only managed three of them tonight. The incredibly efficient Laura was running the show. Nobody waited more than about a minute to be served - on a Saturday night!

And how do Wetherspoons manage to get their hands on so many cracking looking bar staff? Any old geezers staring into space here must be well past it! And no, I didn't leave with my flies open. I don't think so, anyway.
