Top pub in the area if you like a constantly changing selection of top quality beers. Not the cheapest, but what's an extra 30p on a pint when everything else is spot on.

The Old Cross Tavern, Hertford
An excellent pub for people who enjoy their beer and conversation in a pleasant environment. The only criticism would be that the place is a little small and so quickly gets overcrowded. For that reason we tend to go over to the Old Barge.

Tried out this pub for a couple of pints one Saturday evening. Clean, pleasant, open-plan environment. 3 ales - Tinners, St Austell Tribute, and Adnams. The food being served looked good, with prices in the 9-15 range for a main course. As you'd expect for a Saturday evening, many tables were reserved for dinning guests.

Sorry guys, but this place is a dive. The stench of stale urine was so overpowering we had to leave before we could order a beer. Unbelievable that people actually order food in there.
Had we placed an order, the Rebellion IPA could have been a good option.

The Axe And Compasses, Braughing
Very easy to reach - just a few mins off the A10. The food served is excellent - they keep the "specials" menu fairly limited but it is always fresh and well-cooked. Service is top notch. Hence the high rating.
A bit more limited if you're looking for a variety of beers - Just 2 ales on offer - Henry's IPA and Woodeford's Wherry.
