The White Star, Stoke-on-Trent

Excellent beer but visit spoilt by drunks intimidating us and other visitors. Potentially a great pub.

The Glebe, Stoke on Trent

Having not visited this pub until recently I can't comment on its previous state. I have now been here a few times since last September with friends and found the Joules beer to be in good form plus the guest beers. The staff are friendly and helpful so I recommend a visit to this almost hidden pub in Stoke.

The King William IV, Market Bosworth

Sad to say this pub has now closed and is currently being converted into flats. Another of Bosworth's pubs ceases to be a community drinking hole.

The Long Room Bar and Hotel, Tooting

A large pub on the main road through Tooting with outside drinking. Not a huge selection of beers with only one real ale. Food was very good and well priced. A friend had booked accomodation which was very small and cramped and not en-suite or with breakfast but at 33 per night I suppose it wasn't bad.

The Sun Inn, Hook Norton

A lovely country pub with an excellent selection of real ales from the Hook Norton brewery plus other guests. The staff were friendly but struggled to understand the orders due to their lack of understanding of the English language. The food was very good if a little on the pricey side.

Has a large function room, patio and garden at rear which we used for a family party.

Dixie Arms Hotel, Market Bosworth

The Dixie has undergone yet another refurbishment and I have to say it is quite stylish and modern yet it still feels cosy. The bar has been split into a basic wooden floored bar with wooden seats and tables plus a lovely open fire and a cosy lounge area with soft seats. The best thing for me is that the wide screen tv has gone and so has the pool table, the emphasis is back to conversation which is what a pub is for. The only downside for me is the beer range - I can't stand Marstons and that's all there is! If you like Pedigree then I suppose this will suit you.

The Speaker, Westminster

As mentioned previously this pub is a little gem tucked away and not far from the Houses of Parliament. Visited at lunchtime where there was a good mix of suits and your average pub goer. Food was based around sandwhiches and these were well priced and good quality. Now the beer is good quality also and from some interesting breweries but I nearly choked at paying 3.25 for a pint!

The Buckingham Arms, Westminster

If your not wearing a suit then you will feel out of place. Apart from that a pleaant pub with reasonably priced beer which is good quality. The range is mainly Wells and Youngs. Nothing special and it seemed popular but there is no need for the constant background music. Visited at lunchtime and the menu was nothing fancy and not that expensive.

Adam and Eve, Westminster

A busy pub at lunchtimes but with a good range of beers and the food looked reasonable. In an area which is dominated by offices this pub is a welcome change of scenery. Pleasant staff and beer at a reasonsable price for London a worthy entry to the God Beer Guide.

The Black Prince, Woodstock

The outside suggests a traditional country pub but inside the decor is definately modern and I'm not sure if I like it. There were only two real ales available and at best they were average quality. Didn't eat here but the menu looked interesting. O the whole friendly and clean.

The Turf Tavern, Oxford

This is an excellent little pub tucked away in the streets of Oxford. It is a bit of a tight squeeze in there and it gets busy at lunchtimes. Despite being a Greene King house the beer range was very good including some local breweries. As for the food, good value and with quick service.

The Eagle and Child, Oxford

Well worth a visit if in Oxford. The beer is very good and reasonably priced. The food at lunchtime was excellent however I agree with a previous comment about the toilets - they do stink!

The One Tun, Goodge Street

A very busy pub at lunchtimes but I agree with a previous poster that it is a bit bland and full of egocentric business types enjoying an extended lunch. Youngs was very good and reasonably priced at 2.50 and the food was good as well. If you order the Steak & Ale Pie watch out for the peppercorns! Handy place for Tottenham Court Road and the tube.

The King and Queen, Fitzrovia

A very quiet bar (visited at lunchtime) tucked away in the back streets next to the now empty Middlesex Hospital. Adnams was very nice but pricey at 2.90 and the food looked expensive however if you like your malt whisky then this is a place to visit. It is a sporty pub and the cricket was on a large tv.

The King William IV, Market Bosworth

Unfortuntely after Hannah left the 'Bill' went down hill and now most people drink in the Red Lion if you want a decent pint. If you want average beer then thats what you get but there again I'm no fan of Marston beers. In the evenings it is frequented by - how shall I put it- very young drinkers.

The Globe, Leicester

This is where I go if in Leicester I want a decent pint and decent honest good value food. The staff are always friendly and the clientele eclectic, where else can you sit next to two transvestites on a shopping spree chatting to 2 bewildered visitors from Nottingham.

26 May 2007 00:11

The Hoop and Toy, South Kensington

A very average pub selling average beer but at a price, I tried the TT Landlord and it set me back 2.91. The food is also average but overpriced for what you get trouble is there aren't many other pubs around.

26 May 2007 00:06

The Anglesea Arms, Chelsea

This is a a real find in amongst the the affluent appartments and houses of South Kensington. The beer quality is excellent and the service was very genial. However having arrived at lunchtime I thought that the prices were a little out of my league - shame as the menu looked great. Tried the Brakspear's Special whic was very good. Well worth a visit

The Fox and Crown, Newark

Good beer sold by indifferent staff. Food is OK - Lamb stew was a bit watery on the whole not a bad pub.

23 Nov 2006 18:23

The Castle, Newark

I agree with the last posting definately Newarks best kept secret. At time of visit it was selling a local beer from 'Milestone' brewery.

23 Nov 2006 18:20

The Punchbowl, York

Excellent pub which gets very busy at weekends but is worth the visit. Good beer and excellent food.

6 Nov 2006 21:55

The Golden Lion, York

Good range of beers and well kept. The food was pretty good as well. Very busy on a Saturday night.

6 Nov 2006 21:51

The Mash Tun, Aberlour

A fabulous pub with very friendly staff - good food - real ales and a magnificent range of whiskys.

13 Aug 2006 12:10

The Percy Arms Hotel, Otterburn

A friendly hotel set in the village of Otterburn - an excellent base to explore Northumberland. However the rooms are in need of updating and the food was very average, also no real ale!

13 Aug 2006 12:07

The Hollybush Inn, Greenhaugh

This is an excellent place to visit, welcoming locals and landlord along with excellent home cooked food. I can recommend the organic steak.

13 Aug 2006 12:02

The White Horse Inn, Westleton

A warm welcome with excellent beer and food. The accomdation is more than adequate with an excellent breakfast.

31 Aug 2005 15:09

The Kings Head, Orford

Good beer and a warm welcome, worth a visit in this lovely village.

31 Aug 2005 15:07

The Three Horseshoes, Warham

The best way to drink Wherry is straight from the barrel this you can do here! And what fantastic food. Also the accomodation wasn't bad at all.

13 Aug 2005 17:21

The Hobgoblin, Loughborough

This used to be a good pub when it was the Black Lion but like so many in Loughborough it has been ruined by image and name changes, come back Hoskins and John and Jane!!

12 Jun 2005 10:38

The Swan In The Rushes, Loughborough

This has got to be on your list when visiting Loughborough if you a seriously interested in real ale. I lived here for nearly 20 years and went back recently and all that had changed was the upholstery, thank God!

12 Jun 2005 10:37

Ye Olde Red Lion Hotel, Market Bosworth

An excellent local that welcomes visitors with good food and great beer.
