Exeter Inn, Topsham

I like it here. Real ales well kept (mainly Devon breweries). Very friendly. Only objection: TV seems to be on quite a lot.

The Bridge, Topsham

This is one of my favourite pubs. It is pointless listing the beers as they change frequently. The quality is always superb and direct from the barrels. The food is fairly basic (and a bit overpriced for what you get, in my opinion). Also note: in summer evenings the stream appears to generate large numbers of mosquitoes - the staff hand out repellent candles. Best to cover up. Please do not let this make you miss out on this superb place. I strongly recommend it. Easily accessed from Topsham and its train station. Also on a bus route.

Plough, Worcester

If I had more time I would spend it in this pub. Really great beer and cider. We both loved it. And what is more it has that increasingly rare quality of being conducive to conversation and making new friends.

The Royal Oak, Painswick

Excellent food and Stroud brewery beer absolutely stunning. I only wish the place had better heating. It was a freezing day and it was nearly as cold inside!

The Lower George Inn, Gloucester

Liked this pub. Good quality local real ale. Currently my favourite in Gloucester.

The Riverhouse Inn, Upwey

Doesn't seem to be a pub, in that it is all set out for food. Don't go here on a pub crawl! However, it is a very good restaurant and the prices are quite good at lunchtimes.

The Old Ship Inn, Upwey

This pub is in a great spot at the bottom of the Ridgeway. It is a lovely building. For me, it has always been second best to the Royal Standard, but that is now, very sadly, closed. I have always thought the Old Ship to be a good pub. My only criticism is that there could be even more real ale, particularly from small independent brewers. Happy to enjoy a pint there. Haven't eaten there for ages so can't really comment on that.

The Royal Standard, Upwey

Yes, this cultural survivor and community facility closed yesterday. I wish the former landlord all the best for the future. I hope the new owner attempts to replace the social void that the loss of this pub will produce. I also hope the new pub will support real ale and independent brewers, as the Royal Standard did for many years.

The Royal Standard, Upwey

Rumour has it that this place is now endangered in its current form. I have always enjoyed this pub and it's loss will be a cultural loss to Weymouth and Upwey. There aren't many like these left so I recommend you get in there for a pint while you can. Your support might even help change things.

The Square and Compass, Worth Matravers

Recent revisit showed that this pub is still great for beer and exceptional for cider and perry. Still the bemused faces staring sadly at their pasties on floppy plates. I agree with the former poster who says that better this than turning it into a dining pub.

The Old Ship Inn, Upwey

That's a good memory, Drunken Duck!

Tom Browns, Dorchester

I feel that this pub is still "bedding down" after its refurb. I am trying to like it but it still feels new. It is still, however, either the best, or second best, pub in Dorchester. The competition is the Blue Raddle. To my mind it will be the one which is braver in rotating guest beers that will take the first place.

The Seven Stars, Falmouth

A gem. Had nice Betty Stoggs from Skinners. Bass also available as was the weapons grade ginger beer which I sampled - it is an acquired taste! (but excellent in my opinion - although it is fiery and quite alcoholic). Decor is like a museum. Lots of chat. All in all a great place to have a drink. Highly recommended.

6 May 2009 20:27

The Quayside Inn, Falmouth

Available were Skinners Betty Stoggs, Doom Bar and Speckled Hen (I think). Had Betty Stoggs which was in good condition. Food was mediocre at best (although it was cheap). Looked like a clone pub inside. Decent rating as they at least had real ale in good condition.

The Old Ale House, Truro

Great to find somewhere which sells other than St Austell or Skinners (respectable though it is). Had a pint from Titanic brewery which was in perfect condition and poured directly from the barrel. Very cosy and lots of memorabilia with friendly service. Very close to the bus station. Would have stayed longer but unfortunately no later bus!

The Blue Boar, Poole

Marvellous. I just hope it doesn't get as crowded as the Market Porter so I can continue to enjoy my pint in this lovely place.

The Portsmouth Hoy, Poole

Good food and beer. Like a previous writer, I am not too happy with the interior design. It is still, IMO, the best pub on the Quay.

The Angel, Poole

This pub serves good beer in an atmosphere conducive to a good chat. It is a better option to head for here rather than the High Street.

13 Apr 2008 20:47

The White Hart Inn, Wimborne

Had a pint of 49er. ASked if the pump had a sparkler. It had been removed! For the unfamiliar this is very good news. The sparkler is the thing that adds gas to your beer and knocks out most of the flavour. So the beer was fairly good. They also had Best and Thumper. Very nice steak and kidney pie and a more than passable Sunday roast

13 Apr 2008 20:43

The Albion Hotel, Wimborne

Had a Tanglefoot which was OK. Only problem was we went in for lunch but left as the dining area was dominated by toddlers and prams. Not sure if this is usual though.

The Bunch of Grapes, Bristol

Some good real ale. Unfortunately let down by poor customer service.

Bierhalle, Warsaw

Great food. Beer is also excellent but overpriced for even Warsaw. Can feel more like a restaurant than a pub.

6 May 2007 18:16

The Royal Standard, Upwey

The main bar in this pub has been unaltered for ages. There are 3 real ales on at a time including Ringwood 49er and Butcombe. Belgian bottled beers also available. Great for a drink and a bit of conversation. Not ideal if you wish to sit and have a private chat. Can get a bit smoky. Friendly landlord. Great for animal lovers.

The Bricklayers Arms, Luton

If you are at Luton station please have a look in this place. It is great. You could spend all day in some places looking for a pub like this and never find one. Beer range excellent and well kept.

The Old Moat House, Limbury

Carvery great value and quality quite good too! Beer range uninspiring. Surprisingly nice setting. Historic with lots of old photos etc.

6 May 2007 17:56

The Porterhouse, Westbourne

Probably the best pub in the area of Bournemouth and Poole in terms of real ale. Only criticism is that it can get quite smoky.

6 May 2007 17:41

The Volunteer Inn, Lyme Regis

Great beer - straight from the barrel. Food very nice and great value. Definitely worth the short walk up the hill. A favourite pub

The Junction Hotel, Dorchester

Comments below taken on board. However, in it's defence it is actually quite pleasant at lunchtime, except a couple of weeks back when the Great British Tuna Crisis must have struck. Honestly, how little tuna can you get in a baguette? Was it a competition? I think you won. The poor quality bread didn't help either. May have been an off day. Never ordered it again just to be on the safe side. Some nice comfy seats by the windows. Service is prompt and polite. Worth popping in if it's on your way, but not a special detour.

Tom Browns, Dorchester

Great pub brewing its own beer. Interesting selection of fellow imbibers. Seems to have had a bit of a refurb since I was last there but this has not spoiled the place as it so often does. An essential visit if you like real ale and you are in Dorchester.

30 Dec 2006 21:17

The Blue Raddle, Dorchester

This and Tom Browns (which I think the previous poster confused this pub with) are the best two pubs in Dorchester. Real ales (including at least one guest) are served. The food is great but even greater when you take into account the price. A good mix of people and an easy-going atmosphere make for the passing of a pleasant and convivial evening. Just one problem - it can get very smokey if you are anywhere near the bar. Please do not let that discourage you. Go there and order a nice dish of home made English cuisine and wash it down with a pint or two of well-kept real ale. There really is nowhere better in Dorchester to do this!

The Boot, Weymouth

There are many towns which have several good pubs amongst which one is simply outstanding in terms of beer. In Weymouth that pub is The Boot. There are quality offerings for cider and lager drinkers too. If you want a seat then get there early as this pub is justifiably popular. Please note that if you are not familiar with Weymouth it can be tricky to find - check on a map first. There is a car park next door (for the non-drinking driver). However, this being under the control of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, which appears to have a policy of destroying town centre businesses with a punitive car park charging regime, you will have to pay at any time of day or night. This pub is a must!

30 Dec 2006 20:58

The Black Dog, Weymouth

One of the "proper" pubs in Weymouth. There is real ale available usually including an offering from the local Quay brewery. Service is prompt and friendly and beer prices are below the average. Can be noisy at weekends when bands are playing (but those bands can be good!)Recorded music tends to be "Indie". Somewhat different (and welcome) mix from the usual stag and hen circuit on the weekend. Give it a go. And it's got history!

30 Dec 2006 20:45

Bar Banus, Weymouth

If you like ale this place is not for you. If you like the Friday/Saturday night circuit so enamoured by youthful lads and ladies and beloved by stag and hen parties then this is the place for you. A little more mature than The Lizzard etc. But not as mature as Dorothys. If you must go to a bar/club and you have a fair margin between your 18th birthday and your current age then this may be a place to consider. Not cheap.

The George Hotel, Bridport

In defence of The George. I have been there several times and it has been fine on each occasion. The food is a highlight with imaginitive dishes in good portions. Indeed on Saturday lunchtimes you have to be quick to get a table. My only gripe is that I hate having to order between other peoples shoulders at the bar, which is the case here. Nevertheless, the barlady has always been attentive and I have never had to wait more than a minute or so. As for the beer. Palmers has never been a favorite of mine so what I have recieved has been in keeping with expectations. Can get crowded. Definitely consider this place for the food if nothing else. Makes a great break from the market on Saturday - but be there at 11.59!

30 Dec 2006 20:07

The Square and Compass, Worth Matravers

This pub has an excellent range of beers perfectly served which you can drink in a warm authentic interior.I have visited this pub on an occasional basis for 10 years plus and although the beer is as great as ever the atmosphere has changed. It seems now to be more frequented by holiday homers and other visitors than locals which has impacted on the atmosphere. Groups of people who seem quite unsure as to why they are there. Bundling out of Porsche Cayennes to eat pasties off a paper plate.Much better in the summer when you can sit outside. If you want a warm welcome on arrival I suggest that you go elsewhere as I have never been offered that here. The pasties were greasy and served on a paper plate for 2.50 a pop. Stick to the beer.

30 Dec 2006 19:51

The Cliff, Canford Cliffs

We visited this pub yesterday evening. There is no doubt that the interior is laid out tastefully and the pub is a very comfortable place to while away a couple of hours. The range of beer on offer was good and the ales were well kept. There was London Pride and acouple of more esoteric beers which this morning, for some reason, I fail to recall. Ordering the food was easy and the prices appeared reasonable, particularly for this area of Poole. The quality of the food, however, was somewhat disappointing. It was very nicely presented on large plates but the steak was overcooked and very dry, the lasagna was overly runny and lacking in taste, and the steak and ale pie contained tough meat. Overall I would consider popping into this pub if I was in the area for a nice pint of real ale but I would prefer to make other arrangements for dining.
