Sam's Chop House, Manchester

Great pub just off the throng of shoppers, good atmosphere and the ales not bad too, choice of 3 I opted for a festive Santas Special, couldn't see the pump to identify the brewer. Popped in on a Sunday, quite busy but served quickly, not too many dining, there was a band on later, blues I think. Depending on where you sit in the dining area you might have to put up with people passing to and from the toilets.

Going to call back another Sunday and stop for the band, think it could be quite a good night.

The Cask Bar, Castlefield

Funny place, much better inside than the outside suggests. Popped in on a Sunday evening on our way to a tv recording at Granada for a quick pint, 2 Titanics and one other, forgotten the name but it was the one we had, very happy with it. Great music on the jukebox, worst thing was the toilets but you don't spend more than a minute down there anyway!!

The Devonshire Arms, Kensington

Was working in Kensington for a couple of days and popped in here both nights, the second time to eat. Really nice pub, food was superb, ox cheek pie in a red wine gravy with colcannon mash. Lovely beer garden with heaters, ale was spot on, great atmosphere inside and out, would agree with others that is is one of the better pubs around.

The Barrowboy and Banker, London Bridge

Stunning place inside, similar to another Fullers pub The Old Bank of England on Fleet Street. Place wasn't too busy, bar area was completely clear which always seems unusual although only seats where near to the toilets which if you didn't know you'd quickly know from the smell. I guess thats why they were the only seats unoccupied!!

Usual choice of Fullers, nice pint of ESB, worth a look in if passing, just sit near the windows or upstairs and not at the back.

The Charles Dickens, Southwark

Great pub for selection of ales available. Not too busy, possibly being a little out of the way, but no suits which makes a change from a lot of pubs in the area at that time of night. Strange selection of furniture looks like they've been around a few second hand furniture shops and picked whatever there was.

Good service both when ordering drinks and food, although whilst it was only around 7.30pm they had no steak and ale pies left. Ordered chilli with nachos and cheese instead, very nice, and no complaints from colleagues who had raost beef in a Yorkshire pud and scampi. All 3 meals were around the 7 mark, very good value. Don't remember seeing any women in the place other than the barmaid, not sure why?

The Kings Arms, Waterloo

Second pub on our crawl, very busy on a Tuesday evening although not the biggest of bars. Ended up sat in the back which is a Thai restaurant, food being brought out look quite nice.

Decent selection of ales, had a pint of Dark Star which was very good, couple of others on tap as well. Quick service despite being busy, no complaints at all, well worth visiting if you're in the area.

The Hole In The Wall, Waterloo

Not sure about being difficult to find, walk out of Waterloo and there is a great big sign across the road.

Not a bad pub, pretty basic inside, very good selection of beers, had a pint of TEA, one of my mates favourites and he thought it was a very good pint of. Didn't stop for another as was on a crawl but on another day would happily work my way along the bar trying out the selection.

As with a few old pub the toilets left a lot to be desired, the smell certainly cleared the sinuses!!

The Bree Louise, Euston

When a pub offers as many ales as this one does any shortfalls are easily ignored, May not have the character of other pubs in London but they served a good pint. Only complaint would be there's too much choice, never know what to start with, haven't enough time to try everything!!

The Old Shades, Whitehall

Called in Tuesday teatime for a bite to eat, Had the steak, ale and mushroom pie which was very nice, came with mash and crunchy veg, 9.95. Not overly busy at 4.30pm so no probs in getting served, great place with lots of character, good choice of beer which seems well kept.

17 Nov 2010 23:01

Mall Tavern, Notting Hill

Last stop on a crawl around Kensington. Great pub even if the only beer on was Doombar. No complaints in that just a shame the others, including Old Hooky were off as a bit more choice would have been good. Great atmosphere, friendly service, a really nice place to spend the evening. The food side of the place was fully booked and the dishes served up looked pretty good. If I lived near by (I wish) then this would definitely be a regular haunt, well worth a visit.

17 Nov 2010 22:55

The Windsor Castle, Kensington

Fabulous pub, full of character and love the fact they've kept the partitians with a little door you have duck through and standing in the bar you could feel the floor sloping away. Place was very busy on a Tuesday night with a lot of people eating, the food did look good. Had a pint of York Brewery's Ghost Ale which was excellent. Crackin place, definitely will be back.

17 Nov 2010 22:49

The Churchill Arms, Kensington

Where do I start with the Churchill? What a place!! So much paraphernalia you'd need a full day to look at it all, never seen as much before. In another part is a Thai restaurant, totally unexpected, last thing you'd expect but seems to work as it was very busy. Great atmosphere, busy around the bar but no probs in being served. Tried the Fullers HSB which was crackin. Certainly be calling in again when next in town.

17 Nov 2010 22:38

The Elephant and Castle, Kensington

Popped in on a Tuesday evening as part of a trail around Kensington. Very busy but served quickly none the less. Managed to get a table but there is also the option of standing under a heater outside. Good atmosphere, plenty of noise, beer was fine. Great little pub though out of those I called in found others that in my opinion were better, Churchill, Windsor Castle & Mall Tavern

17 Nov 2010 21:47

The Goat Tavern, Kensington

Popped in on a Tuesday, early evening. A few people in, quite a mix, suits, oldies, couple of youngsters. Beer was fine. Okayish pub, good if you get a wndow seat and watch the world go by but there are much better close by.

17 Nov 2010 21:39

The Lord Moon Of The Mall, Whitehall

Interesting comment from andyt as noticed a sign up in different languages about thieves and watching your bags. Not the greatest Wethers pub, much prefer Cross Keyes near the Monument. Bit dark, bit souless. Food okay, beer good but there is better in the arae.

The Speaker, Westminster

Strange one this, popped in on a Tuesday about 10pm, about to close but stayed open for us. Completely empty, chatted to landlord, couldn't really decide whether he was friendly or odd. Gave the tube strike as the reason for being empty but seemed to pride on the fact he closes early on a Friday, doesn't open weekends and is even closed New Years Eve. Seems to rely on office workers, certainly knows his regulars. old feller came in and he knew his order, including beef sandwich which he made himself in the bar. Worth a visit if in the area but wouldn't go out of my way. Beer was very good.

8 Nov 2010 23:22

The Cask and Glass, Victoria

Brilliant little pub, full selection of Shepherds best. Sat outside under the heaters, not much to watch but in the general noise of London nice to find somewhere quiet. Definitely be back.

8 Nov 2010 23:12

Adam and Eve, Westminster

Dropped in on a Tuesday night, very quiet. Nice pub, lacking any atmosphere but can't really judge based on one visit. Night of the tube strike, maybe that was the reason. Beer was fine, would try again in the hope a few more people and a bit of life.

8 Nov 2010 23:05

The Feathers, St James's

Popped in on a Tuesday night, very quiet, handful of people in. Very nice pub, typical Nicolsons, no complaints whatsoever. Good selection of beer, very friendly barman, shame it's not more central but worth the effort and being opposite St James Park underground easy to get to.

8 Nov 2010 22:46

The Two Chairmen, St James's

Called in on a Tuesday night, decent number in to give the place some life. Nice pub, plenty of character, beer good, toilets a little whiffy. One you need to know about or hunt down, unlikely to be passing as not really on the way to anywhere. Would go again if in the area.

8 Nov 2010 22:39

The Coal Hole, Strand

Great pub, always pop in if in the area, in fact its worth the walk from/to if in and around Covent Garden. Usual type of Nicholson pub with a good selection of beers and reasonably priced food, great history to it as well. Good atmosphere inside, never a problem being served, no complaints at all.

28 Oct 2010 22:03

Trafalgar Tavern, Greenwich

Called in on an evening wander, interesting old place, enough in to make it comfortable rather than crowded or like a graveyard!! Great views across the river, beer seemed okay, service was fine but then again was only one at the bar. As with the Cutty Sark, would be worth a visit on a summers day to soak up the sun and watch the world go past on the river.

28 Oct 2010 21:55

The Cutty Sark Tavern, Greenwich

Called in on a Tuesday night, place was quiet and had no trouble being served. Sat upstairs by the window, fabulous view of Canary Wharf and the O2. Beer was fine. Can't comment on previous post as didn't eat and no problems encountered. Interesting old pub right on the banks of the Thames. Would definitely head back on a summers day with a chance of sitting outside although their 'beer garden' can't really be described as a garden!!

28 Oct 2010 21:49

The Cat And Canary, Canary Wharf

Not a bad pub to have an evening drink in, especially if you sit outside. Fabulous surroundings, plenty to watch, people, planes, the DLR. Beer was fine, served quickly even though pretty busy with suits after a hard day earning obscene amounts of money!! Think the round was 1 dearer than later pubs visited over in Greenwich but worth it for the buzz of the area I guess. Would jump off the DLR and grab a pint if passing on a warm summers day for sure.

28 Oct 2010 21:43

The Lamb Tavern, Leadenhall Market

First port of call of the evening, plenty of city type both in and outside the pub. Good atmosphere, no probs in getting served. Most notable thing was how my friend who was wearing pink stood out from all the grey and black suits. She was the only colour in a sea of monotone, no chance of losing her!!

Beer was in fine fettle, stood outside in the fantastic surroundings of Leadenhall, can't be many better places in the immediate area to have a pint.

28 Oct 2010 21:16

The Crosse Keys, Bank

After visiting quite a number of small pokey pubs it was a real shock to walk into the Cross Keyes. The place is enormous, don't think I've ever been is as big a pub in London. Being a Wetherspoons you know what you're getting but this is a little bit special with 24 beers on offer. Had football on the biggest screen I've ever seen which isn't normal for a Spoons in my neck of the woods. Fast service at the bar, which in itself is something special and the food when ordered didn't take long to appear. Plenty of seating, very comfortable and clean. Also after a lot of toilets that leave a bit to be desired in the older pubs the ones in the Cross Keyes were a joy, spacious being the biggest plus!!

Best pub in the area, best Wetherspoons I've been in, though a close call with the one in Harrogate.

28 Oct 2010 21:11

The Jamaica Wine House, Bank

Visited on a Wednesday night, place was packed out so no danger of being watched by the staff!! Full of business types straight from work, good atmosphere, very noisey, had to shout to talk. Served very quickly, bar staff were working hard to make sure no one was waiting too long so credit to them for that. Dark interior, really interesting place, would certainly call in again.

28 Oct 2010 21:04

The Cock and Woolpack, City Of London

Called in on a Weds night, busy possibly cos football on but managed to find a seat at the bar. Decent beer, pleasant if a little bright interior, friendly enough staff and quick service. Seemed as though food only served 12-3pm. Easy to find if you know where to look otherwise you'd be more likely to walk straight past if wandering down Cornhill.

28 Oct 2010 20:57

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

Amazing pub, never been in anything even close, one of my favourites and always try and call in when visiting London. Can never understand why anyone would want to sit outside even on the nicest day, apart from a quick smoke, when the inside is so fascinating. Beer is the usual for Nicholsons, good choice and drinkable, although last time in the first two I went for were both finished. Still wouldn't hold a little thing like that against the place!!

10 Oct 2010 19:08

Doggetts Coat and Badge, Southwark

Been here a couple of times, sitting downstairs in the bar. Great view of the river if you manage a window seat, beer was usual for Nicholsons, good choice and drinkable. Second time in a guy came round with mini shephered pies to try (don't think they were made from mice!!) which were tasty, would be tempted to have a full once if decided to eat. Busy place but no probs getting served, would call in if passing again.

10 Oct 2010 18:51

The Globe, London Bridge

Popped in here when looking for the Market Tavern one Wednesday night. Very basic pub, looks untouched for a few years but the spit and sawdust suits the place. Saw that all 3 beers were off and would normally of turned around and headed for the door except for the music being played and the atmosphere because of it. A DJ going under the name of Burnt Toast was playing Northern Soul, vintage RnB, Blues and Soul-Jazz, sat with a pint of Guiness for over an hour loving every track. Plays there first Friday every month 7pm-11pm and if I lived in London I would be there every time. The few drinkers in there, probably about 15, were dancing around and generally having a really good time, found it very infectious, not something I've come across in a pub in a very long time.

Disappointing that no beer available but the music more than made up for it.

10 Oct 2010 18:42

The Mudlark, London Bridge

Decent place, on the Dick Whittington ale trail. Not big so can get busy and can be difficult getting to the small bar. Good choice of ales as is with Nicholsons, no complaints on quality. Seating outside but tends to be full of smokers as is the tendancy these days. Happily call in again if passing.

10 Oct 2010 18:32

The Mug House, London Bridge

Popped in when passing, very novel pub, seemed a bit more upmarket and the prices for food where noticably dearer than other places in the area. Had a pint of Old Wallop in a metal pewter, different, I believe its a Davys thing but prefer a glass. Not many in and they seemed to be getting ready for an early finish, this was a Wednesday. Nice place, plenty to stare at on the walls and shelves if thats your thing, would be more likely to go elsewhere if in the area.

10 Oct 2010 18:28

The Horniman at Hays, Southwark

Called in as part of the Dick Whittington ale trail and been back since. Very busy pub right next to HMS Belfast, good atmosphere inside, service was quick and no complaints with the beer. First time there had a fish platter to share which was very good, usual Nicholsons fayre. Nice place to sit by the river and watch life over a beer a three!!

Only observation was despite having a large selection of beers some pumps weren't in use, seemed that they were showing whats coming soon rather than what was available.

10 Oct 2010 18:21

The Crutched Friar, Tower Hill

Wandered in as part of the Dick Whittington ale trail. Seemed nice enough with plenty to look at, choice of rooms with differing character. Usual good selection of beers, service was fine, would call in again if passing.

10 Oct 2010 18:13

The Minories, Tower Hill

Stumbled on the Minories whilst working in London for a few days. Popped in each night for something to eat and a drink and have no complaints at all with either. Beer was good, lovely pints of Pride and Landlord, food very good and served very quickly, reading earlier post it looks like they've improved in their service.

Nice setting under the railway arches, once you get used to the rumble every few minutes, will call in agin later this month when back.
