The White Lion, Aldershot

Great little pub, serving great local beer.

The Anchor Inn, Godalming

Ok Franklyn, what's your problem with this place?

You've made a total of 8 reviews in 2 years, 5 about the Anchor, everyone NEGATIVE (makes me wonder why you keep going back, or did you go once and hold a grudge?)

In fact, the only POSITIVE review you've made is about the King Alfred in Godalming

The Outback, Whitehill

This pub has been taken over by a team of Ex-Gurkhas and what a wonderful change they've made. It's now a pub (and restaurant) that you'd be happy taking your mother to.

Beautiful Gurkha (Nepalese) food, decent beer and a comfortable atmosphere. The pub operates with a bar in one half, and the restaurant in the other, so you're very welcome to stop for just a beer.

Highly recommended, just what the town needs.

Down Grange, Basingstoke

What an awful Brewers Fayre.

A wonderful building with plenty of space, and very open plan. The girl behind the bar was taking the food & drink orders, plus serving at the 'bar.' The waiting times were excessive, it took 20minutes to get our drinks, not much ahead of the food we'd ordered! There must have been a 100 used glasses on the bar, none of which were cleared while we were there, just added too.

The whole place just seemed under staffed and poorly managed. Not some where we'd go back.

The Union Inn, Moretonhampstead

What a wondeful pub. Didn't care for either of the 'White ' so looked around a bit more and found the Union.

Great beer and food and a wonderful welcome from 2 out of 3 staff (the ladies, not the chap on Friday lunchtime who F'd etc. at the bar all the time).

Highly recommended

'Under New Management' again

Reopening as a steak house

PubMessenger & TheSurreyPubMan - Would you care to elaborate, those aren't reviews.

The Outback, Whitehill

Ok, I gave it a try. Beer was good, as were the staff.

Pub where everyone is either round the pool table, or sitting at the bar

The Star, Godalming

I do try Syd, but I think you save the best ones for the weekend, when I'm not around!

14 Sep 2009 14:45

The Ferryboat Inn, Hayling Island

Was I lucky on my first visit, or unlucky on my second, that's the question?

Second visit entailed a 75 minute wait for 3 meals. If I'd been the only one maybe I'd let it pass, but as far as I could tell everyone outside (and there was quite a few) were suffering similiar waits, and from talking to people inside it was the same there.

This pub clearly can't cope with more than a couple of meals at a time, which is a problem as it's a big pub, with lots of indoor and outdoor seating. A shame because it's a great location.

If you want to eat, I'd strongly recommend avoiding this pub, if you want to sit by the sea and enjoy a couple of drinks, it's a great location.

14 Sep 2009 14:42

The Red Lion, Godalming

Excellent pint of London Pride at lunchtime

14 Sep 2009 14:33

The Ferryboat Inn, Hayling Island

The pub was about 3/4s full. The Spitfire was very good (price & quality), served by reasonable staff. The food was nice, good sized portions served quicker than the suggested wait.

Great location

Visited on a weekday lunchtime.

11 Aug 2009 11:08

The Red Lion, Godalming

Under new management according to signs and other pubs staff.

Time to give it another visit!

5 Aug 2009 16:10

The Star, Godalming

Beer choice is getting worse, but the cider choice is getting better!

Although a regular visitor I seem to have missed nearly all the beers that have their pump clips displayed on the ceiling

5 Aug 2009 16:08

The Kings Arms Royal Hotel, Godalming

Has Harveys Best on when I visited, good price for Godalming. Is nice and open inside.

5 Aug 2009 16:04

Lily Sugars, Hayling Island

Still closed on 5/8/09

5 Aug 2009 16:02

The Olive Leaf, Hayling Island

Closed and boarded on 3/8/09

5 Aug 2009 16:00

The Anchor Inn, Godalming

While I walk past twice a day I haven't yet been in a position to pop in for a visit, but I'm following these reviews with interest.

It's surprising how many 'one off' reviewers reviews seem to suggest that the residents of Godalming owe this pub a living.

Oh, and in nearly 20 years of regular visits I'd never once heard the Anchor called '110'

No rating as I haven't visited, but will soon

5 Aug 2009 15:58

The Outback, Whitehill

Reopen and refurbed. No longer called the 'Outback' either.

Clearly a lot of effort going on, haven't had the chance to try yet

29 Jun 2009 15:02

The Anchor Inn, Godalming

They've been working on The Anchor for a good few weeks now. It looks like the place has been gutted. Sign outside for a while now saying 'open soon, hiring now'.

25 Jun 2009 15:16

Selborne Arms, Selborne

Excellent pub, really enjoyed my visit for lunch on a Friday for my birthday.

The pub was busy, but the lady behind the bar served me efficently and nicely. The real ale was excellent, and the food, served quickly was very nice. No complaints whatsoever.

The pub was clearly busy, and had a minimum level of staff, but it all ran very well and everyone seemed happy with what they were getting. I've seen less busy pubs need more staff to acheive what this pub did with what appeared to be the Landlady on the bar and serving food, and the Landlord in the kitchen.

20 Feb 2009 12:29

Old Gaol House, Winchester

Found a great seat in a very busy pub. Bar service was slow, but food was served quickly and had no problems with it.

Would visit again.

20 Feb 2009 12:22

Jack George Phillips, Godalming

'Spoons that is getting better. Some of the new staff are more on the ball, friendlier and deal with waiting customers (on an overly long bar) fairly, not just relying on the customers to tell them who's next!

7 Nov 2008 14:14

The Red Lion, Godalming

Best pub in Godalming!! Depends what you want I'm sure the heavy drinkers think 'Spoons in the place to go, real ale, scrumpy lovers maybe the Star

IMO not enough turnover to keep the real ale well, and it smells of wet dog, I love dogs but not that much

7 Nov 2008 14:09

The Star, Godalming

Rudolph - How can you be so certain that it was here that made you ill?

Did you bring your problems to the management, give them an opportunity to sort out your problem? Or just leave vowing never to go back?

You say it's a shame, why not go back then, give it another try. To judge a place on one visit isn't to give it a chance, we all have bad days, and not always our fault

Personally, the beer quality is excellent, the burgers are the best around (come in on a Friday lunchtime and listen to the constant orders for burgers) and the staff are mostly excellent.

7 Nov 2008 13:58

The Star, Godalming

Easter beer festival coming up, theme is A-Z.

How about a local beer festival? Surrey & Hants maybe, it would be good for a local pub to occasionally support local brewers like Ballards, Hogs Back, Triple F, Surrey Hills and others that you never see here.

18 Mar 2008 16:49

The Star, Godalming

2 price increases in 3 weeks Guest bitter goes from 2.75 to 2.85 to 2.95 in less than 21 days.

Someone is treating us like fools putting the prices up just before the budget, a price increase just before the budget and then the annual budget related increase, 4p (4.7p inc VAT) on a pint turns into 10p.

18 Mar 2008 16:44

The Rose and Crown, Godalming

Wondeful little pub. Served an excellent pint of Doombar.

19 Feb 2008 11:48

The Red Lion, Godalming

Serving a reasonable Old Peculiar when I was in, 6 other real ales on the bar. Doens't appear to be that busy at lunchtimes.

BITE is doing this pub a disservice by continuing to list this pub as closed when so many people have been in there and commented on it.

19 Feb 2008 11:47

The Red Lion, Godalming

Open again. The ales are very drinkable, varied selection.

Haven't eaten there yet, but the menu looks intresting.

24 Jan 2008 11:22

The Old Customs House, Portsmouth

Very good pint of HSB, intresting looking pub.

24 Jan 2008 11:18

The Still and West, Portsmouth

Wonderful pub, great beer, good food and a tremendous location.

We ate upstairs at a window table. I didn't realise until we were seated that it would be table service, but we wanted a window table and there were none downstairs. The HSB was excellent and the food quick and well presented.

The only downside appeared to be my young sons fish & chips, for the first time ever he refused to eat it, the plate of fruit he had for pudding (3.95 for the pair, very good value we felt) more than made up though.

24 Jan 2008 11:17

The Cock Inn, Ringmer

A very good Harveys pub. The beer was upto standard, the garden and bar were both attractive. The restaurant area was plainer, but with good company and good food that wasn't an issue.

Worth a visit.

3 Sep 2007 09:29

The Red Lion, Godalming

Using my eyes rather than relying on 'the grapevine' it is clear there is work going on in the Red.

There have been contractors vehicles outside all week, and lights on inside the building.

I spoke to a manager at another pub and he said a tenant had been found, but having been closed for months there are certain jobs that need to be done before reopening.

I'll continue to keep my eyes open...

14 Aug 2007 13:34

The Kings Arms Royal Hotel, Godalming

I'd heard there was Harveys on pump so I popped in recently, no Harveys but

Theakstons beer, not a bad pint.

What has become a scrappy establishment is getting a major spring clean.

Not confirmed, by I was told it's now a Freehouse.

10 Aug 2007 14:29

The Drapers Arms, Peterborough

Busy pub, but more effiecent that other Wetherspoons I know.

Beer selection was great, when I spotted the Old Peculiar I knew I'd made the right choice.

The seating is crammed in, good luck moving about!

3 Aug 2007 13:41

The Star, Godalming

For those intrested in the pub and beer rather than petty point scoring The Star has Summer Lightening available, and an increasing range of Real Ale.

With the smoking ban the pub is much more user friendly and well worth a visit. Proberly the best range of beer in Godalming

3 Aug 2007 13:37

The Anchor Inn, Godalming

What to say? The refit is nice but plain. The beer continues to be good and it is clear they are working to improve the reputation.

Unfortunatly they appear to have acquired a lot of custom from King Alfred regulars. The first impression potential customers get is of shaven headed, heavily tattoed men, and with the improvement in weather shirts are coming off and acres of fat is being displayed.

Not encouraging.

1 Aug 2007 11:15

The Royal Oak, York

From the other reviews I clearly timed my visit badly. I found myself in the back bar, as a visitor I'd walked straight past the closed door to the busier front bar. I struggled to get served and then had a very poor pint of Landlord.

Unfortunately I never had a chance to go back for a second opinion.

1 Aug 2007 11:09

The Three Legged Mare, York

Great place. The beer was wonderful and it's a nice place. Well worth a visit.

1 Aug 2007 11:04

The Hole in the Wall, York

No complaints at all. We ate here on two lunchtimes as a family and were very happy with the food. They also served a good variety of beer.

The pub was busy on both lunchtimes, the atmosphere was freindly and there were a lot of business people eating which is always a good sign in a tourist town.

1 Aug 2007 11:02

The Yorkshire Terrier Inn, York

Highly recommended so we thought we'd visit. It was suggested that with children we could use the upstairs room Empty, awful room we ate elsewhere.

I came back on my own a few days later and enjoyed a great Centurion's Ghost downstairs in the MUCH mmore appealing bar.

Except for the upstairs room this seems a great pub.

1 Aug 2007 10:41

Jack George Phillips, Godalming

Some of the staff need to learn that ignoring a waiting customer for one that's just come to the bar is not good practice, the English don't complain, they just never go back. And to compound the fact by admitting that you know they're a queue jumper...

The beer's fine, the prices great, it's just the service (or lack of) that needs work.

If they're busy, don't bother.

4 Jun 2007 15:36

The White Buck, Burley

Visited over the Bank Holiday weekend. Pleasant pub with a large garden (and a car park to match!).

The Gales HSB was well kept, they also had the usual range of Fullers/Gales beer. Staff were efficent and the prices were average.

We didn't eat, but the menu was extensive and there were a lot of people eating. The portions were good and few plates were going backed uncleared.

There is a small but good older childrens play area, plenty of space for younger children to let off steam without getting under other peoples feet.

8 May 2007 16:37

The Red Lion, Oakhanger

Friendly pub with a reasonable selection of beer. Large food menu with good sized portions.

Two distinct bars, one mainly for eating the other for drinking and smoking, very smokey.

4 May 2007 09:07

The George Inn, Littlehampton

Wasn't sure about this Wetherspoons on first glance, but we needed lunch and didn't fancy any of the other pubs as we had a child with us.

We left with no complaints, the bitter was upto scratch, the food was fine and the whole bill came to less than 20 for 4.

The only negative would be the girl behind the bar who chatted away to her mate while a queue steadily built at the bar.

19 Apr 2007 12:14

The Squirrel at Hurtmore, Hurtmore

I agree, better than the Cyder House (and lacking its pretensions).

The beer was great, the garden is wonderful. The pub makes excellent use of its location.

16 Apr 2007 14:42

The Royal Oak, Borough

I made a special trip to find this pub after seeing their advert in London Drinker.

It was well worth the visit, the beer was on top form and the pub itself is wonderful. A good pint of Harveys is worth searching out.

16 Apr 2007 11:02

The Outback, Whitehill

Large sign on building saying 'Lease this pub'

16 Apr 2007 10:45

The House of Blues, Godalming

Beersupper must of enjoyed some better than average Scout huts, all I ever had as a Scout was 1960s concrete

I headed down there with the intention of having a Friday lunchtime beer, they were closed though

13 Apr 2007 14:14

The Sun, Godalming

I'd never say this was one of the best pubs in Godalming (as much a reflection on the standard of pubs in Godalming), but it's better than the majority.

The beer is good, and I paid less for a pint of Tanglefoot than I would for an IPA in Church Street...

13 Apr 2007 13:58

The Red Lion, Godalming

The Red Lion appears to have been closed all this week, although upstairs windows are wide open

13 Apr 2007 13:54

The Star, Godalming

Good range of beers for the Easter weekend, the Dark Star offering were particuarly good.

Well worth a visit when it's not too busy and smokey.

12 Apr 2007 13:57

The Ship Inn, East Grinstead

Good couple of pints, and nice outdoors area over a sunny Easter weekend.

10 Apr 2007 10:41

Jack George Phillips, Godalming

The Jack Phillips is a VERY busy pub, frequented by all walks of life in Godalming.

The beer is rarely poor, the JP has the best variety of bitter in Godalming. I pay 1.85 for a good pint of Pedigree, on a like for like basis you can easily pay 70% more in most of the pubs in Godalming.

Being a no-smoking pub is very much in it's favour.

23 Mar 2007 15:57

The Star, Godalming

The Star is a great little pub, but

The beer (bitter) choice isn't that great, I realise they're tied to Greene King, but's it's the same old stuff all the time, that wasn't the case a couple of years ago

They also appear to have jumped at the Budget to increase their prices, today I paid 2.55 for a pint of IPA, that's a 10p up from Wednesday. How does '1p from Sunday' (according to the Chancellor) become 10p from Friday?

The pub can be very smokey and at times the 'clientel' can leave a lot to be desired, but what can a pub do about that?

Overall, it's a nice pub with good staff, but unlike the Red Lion it is not the best in Godalming.

23 Mar 2007 15:30

The Red Lion, Godalming

Not especially busy for a Friday lunchtime.

The beer was good, and there was as good a variety as there was 6 months ago when it was a true Free House.

The only questionable thing was the (too many) staff arsing around in the Public bar, looked like they needed more to do, they also need to keep an eye on the main bar...

To give the management/staff at the Red Lion credit, it's not as bad as a lot of people (myself included) feared it would become after being bought by a PubCo.

23 Mar 2007 15:08

The White Lion, Milford

New management advertised outside, net curtains and looks like what was the small pool room is closed.

27 Feb 2007 09:07

The Red Lion, Milford

Very closed now, the ground floor windows have all been boarded up.

25 Jan 2007 15:48

Crossbush, Arundel

A perfectly acceptable Beefeater, good food and service.

Not a pub though

25 Jan 2007 15:43

The Anchor Inn, Godalming

Signs say refit finished on 15/12.

Hope the builders leave the pavement and fencing as they found it, as at the moment it's more like a building site than a public footpath (and just as dangerous in the dark).

12 Dec 2006 15:05

The White House, Guildford

Oh, so up and down. One month great, one month terrible. We'll keep coming back because it's more up than down.

12 Dec 2006 15:00

The Britannia, Guildford

Still like the 'mosh pit' Brit of the early 90s best, but the current incarnation is better than Scuffys.

12 Dec 2006 14:58

The Keystone, Guildford

Popped in for a quick pint on a friends recommendation, very happy.

12 Dec 2006 14:55

The Jolly Farmer, Puttenham

It's a Harvester, you get what you expect.

The staff are up and down, but I expect that's turnover, never anything wrong with the food. Reasonable bar for those that feel the Good Intent isn't a better bet.

12 Dec 2006 14:45

The Good Intent, Puttenham

I 'discovered' this pub when I was just 18, it has never failed me in 15 years of visits.

All the best to the new folks, I hope to meet soon.

12 Dec 2006 14:41

The Merry Harriers, Hambledon

An excellent pub, I've spent many a great evening here.

The only problem was we had to find a driver to get us there and back.

12 Dec 2006 14:38

The Jolly Farmer, Bramley

The Landlord didn't give a 4xxxx about his rating here, intelligent man. Ratings here are subjective, and often based on a one off visit, nothings perfect and some people like to moan, but will never praise...

The Jolly Farmer serves consistently good beer, and has been acknowledged so by more reliable sources.

12 Dec 2006 14:36

The Cyder House Inn, Shackleford

Stopped in recently and we were treated in a very disintrested manor by an 'mature' lady (landlady?).

Not what we'd been led to expect, left after a drink and ate elsewhere.

12 Dec 2006 14:27

Hush, Godalming

No longer Hush, another failure at the 'Woolpack'

Now Moores or was it Moore's, anyhow. You have to wish anyone taking this place over luck.

12 Dec 2006 14:18

The Red Lion, Godalming

Virtually empty and smokey, infact I heard the staff comment on getting ready for the lunch time rush, and then laughing about how funny the idea was

They're now serving food, the menu is small and to be honest a bit pretentious for this pub, 'Chicken filled with' and posh sandwiches. The beer is pretty average, Pedigree (the local Wetherspoons serves better), Black Sheep Best, Speckled Hen

The woman behind the bar considered it more important to take a call from a friend rather than serve me. One of the few remaining staff from the previous ownership looked totally fed-up.

This was a great pub. To me it appears they're angling for the food market as opposed to the beer market. Some luck to them, they're next to 3 restaurants and the town has as many again at all levels. Sad, but it happens.

For the out-of-towners that came to the Red Lion for the beer festivals, look to THE STAR just down the road.

3 Nov 2006 13:24

The Star, Godalming

Much improved since taken over by the ex Red Lion management. The beer quality has gone up, although still 'tied' to Greene King there are now 5/6 real ales available, some direct from the barrel. Beer festival planned for late January, which I understand will be along the same lines as the Red Lion ones.

The Star is undergoing a substantial refurb and is currently very much a 'work in progress'.

Imporved in every aspect but one, still very smokey, but there you are. Roll on Summer 2007

3 Nov 2006 11:14

The Manor Inn, Godalming

Open as a Beefeater now, and yes, it was a Beefeater for many years before it's 'Out & Out' incarnation.

Had a meal in the restaurant and no complaints. Still has a bar and a bar area as well as substantial outside seating including next to the river. Great location for warmer months.

18 Oct 2006 14:29

Jack George Phillips, Godalming

No coffees today, so no complaints!

The beer is good, the price great.

The atmosphere is quiet, but rather that than in your face, especially at lunchtime.

The staff are variable.

For a relaxed, un-smokey, cheap lunch it's hard to fault. For me that is proved by the number of suits lunching there.

3 Oct 2006 14:46

The Sun, Godalming

Good pint of Badger Best in nice surroundings, staff were on the ball.

'Oscarcanning' if all you and your mates drank was blackcurrant and soda then I'm not especially surprised you're not as welcome now. A pub is a business, not a social club or a drop in centre...

3 Oct 2006 14:39

The Richmond Arms, Godalming

Very much a locals pub, but the IPA was good, much better than the Star.

3 Oct 2006 14:34

The Star, Godalming

Quiet. The IPA was ok.

The staff still smoke like chimneys...

3 Oct 2006 14:33

The Red Lion, Godalming

SOLD!!!

Belongs to Punch as of today, not open while I was having lunch, but through the window it looked like the staff were being lectured by a 'sharply dressed' young man...

We await developments, but as it appears to be managed, not tennanted I'm not hopeful.

3 Oct 2006 14:32

The Anchor Inn, Godalming

Some major work going on here as of the start of the month.

The old bottle store's been demolished, also the gents.

It's going to be open for October, but closed during November, or so the blackboard says...

3 Oct 2006 14:28

The Spyglass Inn, Ventnor

Wonderful location, there's something really special about sitting by the sea, sipping a pint and having a meal. The food was fine, large portions and a lot of plates going back uncleared which is a waste. The Badger beer was good, but I've had better.

The down points were the bar, tiny when there's a couple of hundred people in and outside the pub. The only plus about that was an orderly queue was formed and you got served in turn. As mentioned elsewhere the staff do leave something to be desired.

10 for location, 7 for food and drink and 4 for staff.

13 Sep 2006 11:46

The Fire Station, Waterloo

Against the recent flow I found this bar/restaurant very good.

I went there with 5 colleagues and had a very good meal, with good (touch short) London Pride and efficient service.

The building has been well converted and offers an airy space which is a bonus. It is also so close to Waterloo, I left 10 mins to catch my train and made it with 5 to spare.

Very happy.

13 Sep 2006 11:40

Ye Olde Starre Inn, York

Good pub, good food, good beer.

Choice of outside areas, recommend the back as it seems to be the last to fill up and doesn't have the traffic of the front, or the lack of space of the side.

29 Aug 2006 13:57

Jack George Phillips, Godalming

Wouldn't be so bad if you didn't find yourself waiting 5mins for a pint while they serve coffees.

It makes you realise what makes more money for them...

15 Aug 2006 16:43

The Cricketers Inn, Kingsley

Nice pub with a great garden.

We visited on the day of Englands World Cup failure, as a 'football free zone' we were 3 of about 7 customers. The beer was good, and though we didn't eat the menu looked good enough to get us back.

They have a very good young childrens play area in the main garden, my son gave that full approval!

14 Aug 2006 11:35

The Anchor Inn, Godalming

After my earlier negative comment, I'd like to post a more positive one.

There has quite clearly been money spent in and around the pub. The garden really does look great and the interior has been spruced up. I had a very brief chat with the 'older' couple there about the future plans and I have to say they are working hard to make a quality pub.

You clearly don't spend your own money smartening up a pub for the purpose of attracting some of Godalming less savoury characters, you'd of left it as the dive it was becomming

14 Aug 2006 11:25

Square Brewery, Petersfield

Handy town centre pub

7 Aug 2006 15:05

The Old Drum, Petersfield

Handy for when the trains delayed...

7 Aug 2006 15:01

The Red Lion, Milford

Visited here the another night, busy, as it always seems to be. And definitley no complaints.

It should be remembered that the Red Lion hasn't marketed itself as a pub, it markets itself as an place to eat.

Regards smoking, anywhere that primarily serves food should be non-smoking, there are few things more annoying than eating your meal while the person on the next table puffs away with no regard for anyone else.

4 Aug 2006 17:08

The Percy Hobbs, Winchester

Harvester? It's been a Brewyers Fayre as long as I can remember...

Typical Brewyers Fayre, nothing wrong with it, nothing exceptional about it, but it was busy and is out of the way. So I would assume people come back.

26 Jun 2006 13:57

The Paul Pry, Walton

Typical Brewers Fayre, nothing wrong with it, nothing outstanding either.

26 Jun 2006 13:49

The Star, Godalming

Beer was not great, too smokey and WHY do they have a baby gate on one of the external doors?

26 Jun 2006 13:24

The Anchor Inn, Godalming

I'm afraid to say I no longer stop in this pub on my way home from work.

The 'cliental' that sit out the front are enough to put me off going in, having drunk in Godalming for 15 years there are faces you know to avoid, and some of them seem to be sitting outside the Anchor these days.

I don't know whether they're desperate for custom or what, but I won't be stopping in for the moment...

26 Jun 2006 13:21

The Old Mill (Dunnings Mill), East Grinstead

Nice looking pub, nice location, nice beer and good staff.

It loses 1 point for a 9 round (2x Harveys Best, 1 x pint OJ and lemonade, 1/2 x lemonade) and 1 more point for a below average turkey sandwich and drowing salad in dressing.

I would go back though

23 May 2006 14:06

The Black Horse, Climping

Always come here on our visits to climping, never had reason to be unhappy. Always been a 'food' pub as far as I can remember, remote pubs have to be these days.

23 Feb 2006 10:56

The Perseverance, Havant

2nd pub I tried in Havant (first was The Star), smokey, not particuarly welcomming and and no beer of note. Left without trying.

Trax / The Star, Havant

Gales pub, great I thought as I crossed the station bridge. Only had one beer on and dressed as I was having come from a meeting I couldn't walk out the door fast enough.

The Old House At Home, Havant

3rd pub I tried in Havant, just as I was giving up to go back to wait for my train. Had my first 2 pints in Havant, and got 2 watch 15mins of Ireland v France. Good beer and what seemed a good pub, will visit again if stuck in Havant.

Little complaint, the first door I tried (far end on pic above) was either stuck or locked. Feeling a complete idiot, as there was lots of people watching me, nearly didn't try the other door. Glad I did.

The Jolly Farmer, Blacknest

Not a bad find, I always find it hard to find things wrong with a pub that sells Gales beers, however, a silly little thing on our last visit. We were served horseradish with our scampi! It appears one of the waitresses had filled all the scampi pots with it

The Red Lion, Godalming

The Aussie manager didn't last long

The beer is as varied as always, and of late pretty good. Staff seem happier

Still way to smoky though, those fans just don't work, and I'd wonder about the coffee as the landlord and his mother-in-law have taken to drinking Cafe Nero coffee in the pub!!!

The Robin Hood, Standford

Looks like it's open again

Jack George Phillips, Godalming

NO where near as bad as other people describe it.

I, and many others eat there reguarly with no problems. They have an intresting selection of real ales, and the fact this is Godalmings ONLY NON-SMOKING pub should be heartily prasied.

Some of the complaints listed below are Local Council / Trading Standards issues, the fact that I've never heard 'serious' complaints makes them seem like petty gripes

The Red Lion, Godalming

I've been drinking at the Red for a long time, I've seen many staff and the odd manager come and go, and never fully understood the landlords guest beer policy.

The new manager seems to me more suited to a 'young' pub than a Traditional Free House, he appears to have little understanding of real ale and appears more intrested in volume sales of alco-pops and shooters.

The beer policy still seems bizarre, for weeks I've drunk the Harveys because nothing else is palatable. His new manager also doesn't seem to understand English beer

There seems to be upheaval among the long time staff, 1s been given his marching orders, 2 have resigned and it sounds like more are possibly on their way out.

To me it seems the pub is going to be run on a much more profit driven basis, as a cash-cow for the owner. The beer is not cheap, and without the atmosphere this pub used to have, one might as well drink in Wetherspoons

The Star, Godalming

Sadly Sarah & Alex have choosen pastures new, and snowy Good luck to them!

The new couple seem fine, older and both smokers which will sadly curtail my visits to the Star, I used to visit at non-busy times, usually relatively smoke free, but those are also the times staff choose to smoke

The Shepherd and Flock, Farnham

Great beer, worth a visit for that alone (why else go to a pub?). Good food.

18 Feb 2005 11:01

Queens Head, Farnham

Good cosy pub, nice beer.

18 Feb 2005 10:59

The Slug and Lettuce, Farnham

Nothing bad, nothing special.

18 Feb 2005 10:59

The Anchor Inn, Godalming

Sadly this pub seems to be dying. It is now under temporary management after the last couple left because they couldn't make it work.

It seems it was killed by bad and incompetent management after it was sold to a pub company.

Charters Bar, Peterborough

Wonderful find after 10 years of going to Peterborough

Great range of beers, even better prices (I'm from Surrey) all very drinkable in a wonderfully different location.

18 Feb 2005 10:53

The Green Dragon, Liphook

Not a pub for me.

I walked into to be greeted by a wall of stares from the locals at the bar. No space to get through them to the bar, had to be served over someones shoulder. Had a not bad half (sadly) and left quickly.

18 Feb 2005 10:50

The Royal Anchor, Liphook

Nothing special, average beer, average food.

18 Feb 2005 10:47

The Links, Liphook

Nice pub. Caters very much to the local golf crowd who can at times take over.

Good food, nice to sit outside in the summer.

18 Feb 2005 10:47

The Crown Inn, Headley

Great little pub. The food is excellent as is the beer (although a little pricey).

Always busy.

18 Feb 2005 10:45

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

Great little pub, lucky find when waiting for a friend.

Beer was good as was the variety, staff ok.

18 Jun 2004 11:06

The Red Lion, Godalming

Great range of real ale and bottled beers.

Food is good but some of the staff leave a lot to be desired

18 Jun 2004 11:04

The Star, Godalming

Great little pub run by a nice couple.

Has the best pub garden in the town. The guest beer choice is often good.

18 Jun 2004 11:03

The Anchor Inn, Godalming

This pub has suffered badly since it's owners of 10+ yrs sold up a few years back.

It now looks like some effort is being made, they had 3 real ales available those tasted were fine.

Visit was a bit early in the evening to comment on the atmosphere.
