The Talbot Inn, Eynsham

Revisited the other night with the whole Oxford hash. They very kindly gave us a huge platter of chips free with our beers - thanks.

The Rat and Ratchet, Huddersfield

Visited this pub in the early 90's in my student days at Hudds Uni. It was then an excellent real ale pub; sounds like it's still going well.

The Air Balloon Inn, Birdlip

Re-visited this pub recently on the way back from a mountain marathon with a couple of friends. I had the Sunday roast which again was very disappointing - just about warm and not cooked very well. They both had other items from the menu such as Lasagne which they told me was better and their portions were better. The lesson appears to be: "avoid the Sunday Roast".

The George and Dragon, Long Hanborough

Sunday Roast was reasonably priced for a country pub and the other items on the menu were pricey but the portions were enormous. Staff friendly. Had three real ales. Only tried the Eagle as I'd not had this before, though this was nothing to shout about.

The Bell Inn, Long Hanborough

Looks very swish inside and the Sunday Roast is reasonably priced for a country pub. Staff were friendly.

The Three Horseshoes, Long Hanborough

Unpretentious, decent pub.

The Hand and Shears, Church Hanborough

Awarded this a four because when we ran there they'd got no beer. The barman told us that a wedding party for the church opposite had nearly drunk the place dry before the wedding, and returned after the wedding to finish the job, the day before; and that apparently was before they went to the reception.

The Strickland Arms, Ducklington

When I rang up to ask if it was okay to being 30 or so thirsty runners back the girl on the other end of the phone apologised in advance saying that'd be okay but they were having a Casino night but as it turned out this didn't matter one iota. There were plenty of people behind the bar to serve everyone within a reasonable time, and in a friendly manner, and the beer was good.

The Bell Inn, Ducklington

I was pleasantly surprised that this pub was very reasonably priced as it looked like a tourist trap from outside. Quiet pub with small selection of good beers. Unpretentious.

The New Inn, Witney

Not a particularly welcoming place. We were told to clear off and come back later so we didn't. As we didn't go back later I can't comment on the beer.

Cross Keys, Witney

Ignore the gripes of the small minded Daily Mail readers who've not read nor paid attention to all the facts. The fact of the matter is that the top-brass of Brize Norton air base have asked pubs in the area not serve members of the armed forces in uniform and this isn't the management of the pub's decision. This is still a friendly and welcoming pub.

Cross Keys, Witney

Nice selection of decent ales and very reasonably priced food that comes out in generous portions. True, you might have to wait a little while when it's busy but it's busy for a reason - it's a good establishment.

The Talbot Inn, Eynsham

Been there a few times now for a drink after a cycle ride, hike or run. There is a nice selection of real ales by the barrow behind the bar so take the time to look before you order. Reasonable prices for the area.

29 Jul 2010 23:23

The Red Lion, Eynsham

Fairly average pub but welcoming. Had Old Speckled Hen and IPA on tap.

29 Jul 2010 23:21

Dog House, Frilford Heath

Can't comment on the prices as my boss was paying (thanks boss) but the Speckled Hens went down a treat. The food wasn't cheap (thanks boss again) but was good. Bit more of a restaurant and hotel then a pub.

29 Jul 2010 23:19

The Zetland, Huddersfield

I remember the Zetland from my student days at Hudds Uni back in the 1990's. Back then, under the Zetland name, it was good drinking establishment.

29 Jul 2010 23:16

The Angel and Greyhound, Oxford

This pub rescued us the other night after the debarkle of the beer-less Star. The Angel & Greyhound is always a popular place with lively atmosphere and good beer including Youngs and this night, Gem.

29 Jul 2010 23:12

The Eagle and Child, Oxford

All pubs should be like this. True: they try it on with the tourists over the Tolkien/Carrol link a bit but there's a good selection of changing real ales on tap, the staff are friendly and will let you try a sip before you order a pint, and the food is sensible, not pretentious, and good value.
The barman wasn't very happy over the World Cup because they didn't have a tv showing games, which was why he complained it was too quiet then, but this made it more attractive to us that night and I was glad to show some visitors this great pub.

The Jolly Farmers, Oxford

I'm straight, but we visited this pub on a pub-crawl-run around Oxford for one hash, but nobody cared, 'cause neither the staff, regulars, nor ourselves were bothered and there were a couple of run-of-the-mill real ales that were good.

Jude The Obscure, Oxford

I will try not to let a bad date affect my review of this pub! My date appeared uninterested after a few minutes but the beer was nice and it was a nice summer evening in the beer garden. My second visit was where I'd organised this as the first stop on a pub crawl when it was a bit quieter but the staff were friendly and there was a good selection of new beers available to try which went down well.

29 Jul 2010 22:54

The Head of the River, Oxford

Bit of a tourist trap on a hot weekend in the summer so you could be waiting a while to get served and the beers aren't cheap but nor are they at rip-off prices. Staff were pleasant and the XB went down a treat after a long cycle ride along the Thames to get there though there was a lack of seating there as it was totally packed.

29 Jul 2010 22:50

Oxford Retreat, Oxford

Bit of a busy tourist trap I think but the London Pride went down a treat and wasn't overpriced.

29 Jul 2010 22:47

The Port Mahon, Oxford

We were there for Saint Patrick's day this year (2010). Very friendly staff, lively atmosphere and the Guinness was flowing well and good.

29 Jul 2010 22:46

The Marsh Harrier, Oxford

Great pub that filled the gap nicely when the Exeter Arms down the road ran out of beer one night. Nice local feel with real ales.

29 Jul 2010 22:45

The Seacourt Bridge Inn, Oxford

Nice pub being just a couple of metres away from the S1/S2 bus stop so handy for a trip into Oxford. Small but good selection of main stream real ales. Competent but not spectacular.

29 Jul 2010 22:41

Royal Blenheim, Oxford

Been there a couple of times now, once of which was on their pub quiz night which was very entertaining. Small but good selection of real ales present and lively atmosphere.

29 Jul 2010 22:39

The Star Royal, Oxford

Very disappointed with The Star: when we arrived there were no real ales on tap but only lagers; the Guinness was very grainy, and I consider myself overcharged for the two 330 ml bottles of Old Speckled Hen that came to 6 in total.
We asked the grumpy barman if he'd be laying on some real ale later to which he grumblingly replied that he "may" put on a barrel of Green King IPA. In the end we didn't bother but went to the far superior Angel and Greyhound down the road instead.
A large beer garden but what use is that without any beer?

29 Jul 2010 22:35

Jude The Obscure, Oxford

Very busy, very "commercially" aimed "clone" pub with no "unique" atmosphere but they do have a good selection of beers and the establishment is well run.

The Kite Inn, Oxford

Unpretentious and very reasonably priced food, good real ales, and always happy to accommodate the Oxford Hash. They put on a good buffet spread as well.

8 May 2009 19:12

The White House, Bladon

Being as the hash, 20 to 40 of us, usually all meet around 7pm before going off for a run to arrive back at the pub at 8pm 'ish we're used to having to wait a while at the bar to get served, despite having warned the pub well in advance that we're coming and they might like to lay on more staff than usual. This pub must have taken notice for a change and actually did have four or so people behind the bar serving us very efficiently and quickly, so thanks.

5 May 2009 20:07

The Exeter Hall, Cowley

Used to be good but the last time we were there they ran out of all beer at 7pm on a Wednesday evening! A pub with no beer is next to useless so one star.

5 May 2009 20:02

The Five Horseshoes, Maidensgrove

On the pricey side, but by no means expectorant, and nice and friendly.

5 May 2009 20:00

The Air Balloon Inn, Birdlip

Two years ago I'd have given this pub an 8 but last week after I visited I'd have to downgrade it to a 4 as standards have slipped considerably. The different varieties of sausage and mash that used to be on the menu weren't there anymore and the interesting items on the menu changed to bland everyday things. We had the Roast Pork which was disappointing. We were warned the plates were exceptionally hot: they weren't, they were just a tad above normal room temperature. The carrots had the appearance of being left over from last week and, together with the cauliflower, had been barely cooked. I was also annoyed to find the credit card machine had been set to ask for a gratuity yes/no on paying for the meal before even receiving it. I never put a tip on the credit card on principle, especially before even receiving the meal! Too many establishments are using this as an excuse to pay their staff less than the minimum wage if the staff even receive the tip at all, and it's very presumptuous to ask before the customer has had chance to evaluate the food and service!

The Plough, Witney

Good and simple place. Hash friendly.
