The Chequers Inn, Battle

Visited 14.8.15 for first time in years and what a surprise as a complete transformation inside to a very warm and welcoming décor & staff. Excellent well kept beer, wine including by the glass, and an excellent meal was enjoyed by us. By 7:45 all the tables were taken and the informal atmosphere was buzzing with everyone enjoying themselves, all types and ages, will certainly return.

Norman Arms, St Leonards on Sea

Recently late January/Early Feb Feb.2014 the landlord did a runner with all the furniture and moveable equipment, drink, etc. so closed down and completely empty 4 bare walls although the stench noted by others still pervading. Don't know if this is an Enterprise or who ultimate owner is but it has been a complete disgrace and they should be ashamed of themselves for allowing it to become so rundown and filthy whilst somehow escaping the attention of Hastings food & drink & health authorities, actually cleaner to drink in the nearby public convenience.

The Ostrich Hotel, Robertsbridge

Best for wine drinkers as landlord prefers and good choice of wines.
Beer often 'off' or worse as neither landlord nor bar staff drink real ale and even the Guinness can be sour so sniff before you gulp.
Sunday B-B-Q during Grand Prix season can be interesting as features food of the country where racing held.
Much of custom has now gone to Salehurst Halt (younger) or George Inn (more mature and foodies).

The Royal Hotel, St Leonards on Sea

Unfortunately S & N just don't care so not only has the kitchen been closed for ages, the coffee machine similarly broken and not fixed, the beer & wine fridges often broken so nice warm tonic with your gin or even hot white and rose wine.

Even with the Railway across the road now closed most customers of both have abandoned it and the staff are demoralized.

Textbook example of the worst way to run a pub while they are still advertising to try to find a tenant to take it on, some hope as onerous terms! So long as you don't need to use the loos even the P.O.W. is now better.

Sad news is that Ian and his family, who have done so much to improve the food and ambiance, are leaving shortly. Seems the pubco's promises were not kept and in fact the pubco itself is now under wing of S & N management.

The George, Robertsbridge

I took London guests, both young and old, for lunch on Saturday who loved the place, the food and drink including good choice local cider & non-alcoholic drinks, although no dog nor landlady present. Choice of 3 ales: T.T. Landlord, Harveys and a local bitter all good, just 2 staff provided excellent fast and professional service many pubs couldn't manage with 6. We had the very good value platter lunches (local fish, meats, cheese, etc.) and large salads of excellent quality - all good value for money and left good impressions all round. Robertsbridge is fortunate to have so many pubs for a small village and each has it's own niche, so horses for courses is probably the best way to judge each.

Dramatic changes recently at The Royal or Adrian bolt & Zagrab have mistaken it for another. Visited 4 times now and found the toilets always very clean as is the pub itself. Fresh flowers on tables is dining area & good choice of fresh as well as ping food, in particular the large herby & lemon chicken salad was excelent & under a fiver. The toast BLT was also a bargain & rolls are only 1.I have never seen an altercation nor have I felt intimidated (I am 70) although the language of some customers is earthy but quite typical of the working and benefits classes of the area.175 glass of Merlot only 1.90, pint lager 2.95, 2 real ales & real coffee. I will certainly return both to eat/drink and for a wee !

The Bell Hotel, Bexhill Old Town

I stopped for a breather on walk to Bexhill Hospital from station mid-day and found it quiet (but then a weekday) but friendly. Well kept beer so worth a visit for a usually hidden part of Bexhill.
