The Normanby, Putney

Maybe good for rugby, but rubbish for service in either getting food or drink out of the gromless bar staff was a virtual impossibility. We finally got the former, ordered the latter of which there was no recollection when we asked where the food was 20 minutes later. Decor wise the soul of a good pub has been ripped out, a genuine waste of space.

The Holy Drinker, Battersea

Good for a winters Sunday afternoon next to the roaring fire. Can get completely rammed at weekends in the evening, but if you are ther early enough to get a tabla a nd a good crowd, has a great atmosphere. Bar staff can be up themsleves a bit, but are lively to serve and there's ony draft Guinees and bottled lagers, but have had some great long nights in there and liked it so much have even nursed the hangover there the afternoon of the next day.

The Three Kings, Clerkenwell

A great pub, real fire in winter, and friendly outside drinking in summer. they do now take cards behind the bar and the food available is simple and good value. Bar staff are chatty, and may even take you on for a game of scarbble on a quiet night. Beer is good, usually 3 on tap. A place with a genuinely warm and welcoming atmosphere that difuses those in there who try a bit too hard to be trendy after leaving their publishing job for the day.

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

Always liked this pub, even sat through the jazz on a Sunday evening. Old chap behind the bar can be abit grumpy at times, but adds to the character. Came across their St Georges Day celebrations by accident and enjoyed the free snacks laid out on the bar. Bitter has been pretty reliable in my view.

Blackie Boy, Newcastle

Always pop in for a drink when back in Newcastle, nice dark proper pub feel inside bright ly lit bars are just too bleak an experience. Used to go down to watch the 5 (6) nations rugby when i lived up that way. Traditional array of Newcastle beers. have only been on an afternoon, have a feeling the clientele is a bit different in the evening, especially from Thursday onwards.

Viva Cafe Bar, Balham

It is definitely has indeed seen off the competition fomr the dreadful bar Lumiere opposite, even getting some furniture from the place when it closed. I must agree with other comments saying that this is a difficult place to leave, it is very easy to settle in for a long seession here. The owner is a great chap and good for a chat, definitely worth a visit even when its quiet. Beer is bog standard however, and only got draft last year I think.
A great place to round off the night though for its mellow atmosphere.
