The White Horse, Harrow

Went in for the first time for a couple of drinks and dinner on Saturday night. Friendly staff, great beer (four different ales on handpump) and superb pub food. I had haddock, chips and mushy peas and my wife had homemade game pie with mash and peas - both dishes were delicious. Fullers Front Row and Gale's Seafarers Ale were both excellent. Recommended - we will return.

Cricketers Arms, Ockley

Stopped off here for a refreshing drink on journey back to London from the coast. Surprisingly quiet at 7pm on a Friday but Ringwood Best and Marstons Pedigree both excellent. Friendly service, nice large garden with plenty of tables and rare 'ungentrified' interior including bar billiards table and dartboard. In short, the kind of pub you would wish to find in any English village. Perfect.

The Horseshoe Bar, Glasgow

Large single room Victorian gin palace in Glasgow city centre. Amazing bar which covers most of the room, two draught bitters - Deuchars IPA and Taylor's Landlord, huge engraved mirrors throughout plus wonderful stained glass in the front windows. Absolutely packed on a Friday lunchtime with a real buzz. Would be a good venue for a night on the lash with your mates. Worth visiting for the decor, beer and the amazing bar.

The Gunmakers, Clerkenwell

Called in today (Monday) afternoon and it was fairly quiet - enjoyed a quality pint of Bateman's Rosey Nosey which was served by a very freindly barmaid. Unfortunately I could only stay for the one but would like to return for an evening to sample some of their other ales (they had Taylor's Landlord and Harviestoun's Bitter & Twisted).

A simple uncomplicated pub that does exactly what it says on the tin. Shame it's not open on weekends.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

After years of hearing about this place I made a very overdue visit on last Sunday evening. The Wenlock really is a time capsule of boozing before the rise of lager in the 1960s. The pub has a wonderfully scruffy air but to juxtapose this, the ale is kept in good condition and the staff polite, helpful and speedy.

Sure the floor has seen better days, the lavs are rather pongy and some of the locals can be a bit sweary and lairy but there were eight handpumps on the bar serving a delicious selection of bitter, porter, mild and cider. Where else can you get that on a regular basis?

Personally, I don't share the opinion of many that The Wenlock is the best pub in London, it may not even be the best pub in N1, but it is a great pub that celebrates the ancient art of boozing in our wonderful capital.

The Three Wishes, North Harrow

Not a bad local pub for watching sport or drinking with your mates. The real ale (St Austell's Tribute and Courage Directors) is well kept and the bar staff friendly and polite.

The proliferation of huge widescreen TVs and the foul-mouthed, opinionated, football 'supporters' propping up the bar mean that you might not feel at home here with your Mum or your missus.

The Southwark Tavern, London Bridge

In here at 4pm on a Sunday afternoon. The bar staff were speedy and friendly although the kitchen was closed for an unnanounced hour so we couldn't order food. The Harvey's Sussex Best was in good condition and we found the only empty table downstairs.

The cellar bar was filthy - stacks of dirty lunch plates and empty glasses left on many tables and sticky messes where drinks had been spilled.

The manager could do with a kick up the rear and the brewery could put their hand in their pocket to buy some paint for the basement bar - it was very shoddy.

All in all, not the place to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon.

The Dog and Duck, Soho

Great pub with oodles of character and amazing decor a stone's throw from Oxford Street. The ale is always extremely well kept and although they have a guest beer on it's hard to stay away from Taylor's Landlord as it's just so good.

I haven't eaten here myself but friends who have say the food is good pub fodder.

All in all a solid, quality boozer that gets everything right.

The Ship, Soho

Great grotty rock pub in the middle of Soho. When the Marquee Club was down the road the headline band would occasionally drink in here first - very cheaply too as their fans would congregate here before the gig and battle to buy them drinks!

The Fullers ale is well kept, the music is loud but not unbearably so and it's usually rammed to the gills with a real mix of people from muso wannabees and local office workers to funky young things beginning their night out on the town.

Bar Polska, Holborn

Uninspiring euro-style bar with plastic furniture, bottled Polish beers and possibly the rudest proprietor in the whole of London. There are much better places to eat and drink in this area. Best avoided.

The Railway Bell, Crystal Palace

The Railway Bell will be just up your street if you're looking for a local boozer which serves well-kept real ale from the Young's range. Very friendly bar staff and a great garden compliment the aforementioned ale - it really is kept and served in great condition.
