Trafalgar Freehouse, South Wimbledon

Don't know what the last post was about. The beer is always excellent and varied. 6 Ales and 1 real cider last time. Some decent bottles too. Staff have been friendly whenever i've been in.

The Kings Head, Tooting

Please please please don't ruin this fantastic interior. all it needs is someone decent to run it.

27 Apr 2008 22:21

The Leather Bottle, Earlsfield

Good food but feels like a hotel restaurant. Not the place it once was.

27 Apr 2008 22:07

The Prince Of Wales, Tooting

The fish van outside is a nice touch!

27 Apr 2008 22:03

The Prince Of Wales, Tooting

hope it's had a better job than the Duke of Devonshire in Balham!

27 Apr 2008 22:02

The Open Page, Earlsfield

Not exactly an historic booza though. It was only a few years old, didn't like it meself but definitely don't like the newy.

27 Apr 2008 21:58

Hare and Hounds, Tooting

Is the inside still the same? I quite liked it in there.

27 Apr 2008 21:55

The Clarence, Balham

This isn't a bad place at all. There is a fairly decent beer selection in here although only one real ale on my visit. However, shall return.

How about a beer menu? I didn't see one. It would help when it's busy and for people intimidated by the unusual!!

6 Feb 2007 10:57

The Duke of Devonshire, Balham

Did I see sparklers being used in this pub??!!!!

Fridge a bit too cold.

6 Feb 2007 10:52

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

Shame the beer selection isn't a little more interesting in here.

23 Jan 2007 17:39

The Salisbury, Leicester Square

Still like this place. The ale is reasonable, service pleasant and the surroundings need not be mentioned.

23 Jan 2007 17:35

The Harp, Covent Garden

Continues to be a great pub.

23 Jan 2007 17:31

The Barley Mow, Marylebone

Another disgrace along with the Fox and Anchor in Smithfield! This place could easily make money.

23 Jan 2007 17:24

The Churchill Arms, Kensington

Don't know what game you were watching but it certainly isn't a great pub to watch sports. Smoky yes, cluttered, it's a an old pub! I heard the landlord was Irish but it certainly isn't an Irish theme bar and it is a Fullers Pub so expect Fullers beers - in good condition.

20 Dec 2006 20:28

Duke Of Wellington, Belgravia

Fairly ok pub with a nice atmosphere, in Posh land.

20 Dec 2006 20:19

The Kings Head, Tooting

Well I'm glad to see they are showing the football again here regularly but correct me if i am wrong. There was a point when it seemed a bit of a no no to watch football in there.

Last poster is right it's not a pub to enjoy from outside but with an interior this good, why would you want to stay outside!?! If this pub were in another area then I'm sure that it would receive far more visitors. There aren't many pubs with such an interior. If I had the cash I'd take it over and make it perfect, but I don't.

15 Dec 2006 22:43

The Eagle Ale House, Clapham

A further visit confirmed this is a good pub with a decent atmosphere and, more importantly, decent beer. They have 3-4 pumps on with fairly interesting beers and each beer was in good condition on my visits. It is a little crowded around the bar so it can be a bit awkward getting to the bar.

I don't agree that it's tatty although perhaps in comparison to the area's other establishments it could be. it still retains a lot of pub pub charm and the sound of decent conversation with nice dark lighting and I'd be happy for it to be my local and will return more often.

13 Dec 2006 21:58

Charles Holden, Colliers Wood

Cheers for the info. Agree with Jimmythefish, it's good to see a licensee interacting with customers/potential customers.

Curious about PridenJoy, haven't got around to sampling that one, will have to pop in to try that. Got no problem drinking a lower alcohol brew as long as it tastes nice. In fact, it could do me a favour!

Not at all surprised Tribute was such a good seller. Had one elsewhere recently and it went down a treat, so i had a few more. I expect others are doing the same.

12 Dec 2006 21:23

The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch

Is this a Fuller's pub???

11 Dec 2006 00:06

Rehab, Colliers Wood

The best pint in colliers wood, come on! there is, if i recall, one beer, Amstel, served at minus 23 C so that even my girlfriend didn't enjoy it!!

Having said that, this is a decent little pizza pasta restuarant with some very pleasant service. The food is quite simple but good. They get a good mix of customers in but i have never been there late doors so can't comment on that. It is primarily a restaurant with a small bar at the far end. I wouldn't recommend it as a drinking place but found plenty to praise it for otherwise.

May i stress - not a pub!!

11 Dec 2006 00:00

Charles Holden, Colliers Wood

Aleking makes some good points that i agree with but then perhaps we are looking from two different viewpoints as it is a business for the licensee who therefore has to consider the books. That however, doesn't bother me as a potential customer.

I'm glad to hear there are a few different ale choices in the pipeline and that perhaps my experience of it isn't universal. I've probably been very unlucky!! I'll come in to try some if I know there is something different there.

Having only a few ales on isn't a problem but having the same old choices is often off putting. Having one more unusual one next to the standard stuff you get everywhere would make the pub more appealing and tempt the likes of me in more often out of curiosity.

Who brews Tup Ale out of interest?

10 Dec 2006 16:04

The Bierodrome, Clapham

Same as all the others!

10 Dec 2006 15:26

The Frog and Forget-Me-Not, Clapham

"well kept lagers and Bombadier" mmmm

Crap place with rubbish staff.

10 Dec 2006 15:24

The Rose and Crown, Tooting Bec

An ex local of mine! Wonderful place with properly trained staff. No pretensions and nice people on an evening. The landlord obviously knows his salt. No food except crisps and the odd sandwich tray going round. The selection of drinks is bog standard but they still have a couple of Keg Bitters on sale!!! It's the only place I've every been where I've enjoyed a pint of Flowers Original so that's saying something. They have Pedigree (nah) and Special on too.

10 Dec 2006 15:20

The Kings Head, Tooting

It's such a beautiful pub that I'm always disappointed when something isn't right. It was very empty on myvisit and lacking in atmosphere, which is a real shame. If you like pub interiors, you'll like this one. Definitely worth a look although if you drink ale you'll be disappointed.Went in with a view of getting something to eat but only on the condition that my beer tasted good. It didn't taste very good so I didn't eat! They never really served it in good nick anyway, so no change there.

In fact, they have removed 3 handpumps from the bar since my last visit and replaced them with some standard options. That said they were not offering more ales before but it does say something about priorities. The selection is poor anyway.

I heard good reports about the other stuff going on here and the staff were pleasant. I'm sure the average professional in the area will enjoy it.

10 Dec 2006 15:13

The Dog and Fox, Wimbledon Village

I love good beer, conversation and good food but I hate over the top ponciness!! I also hate endless refurbishments for no good reason.

6 Dec 2006 13:22

The Viaduct Tavern, St Pauls

Will they give anyone a tour or do you have to be part of a group? I'd be quite interested in having a nose down there.

4 Dec 2006 22:12

The Old Doctor Butler's Head, Moorgate

Good little pub in charming little city alley. I had hoped to bag a nice Porter but they were out. Shame. TVs look a bit funny in there.

3 Dec 2006 11:42

The Market Porter, Borough

Hadn't been in here for a while but nothing much had changed, quick service etc etc I had a stout which wasn't very good though. Still that was just my taste.

1 Dec 2006 20:03

The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

Can't help finding this place a bit of a disappointment. There are lots of good features inside but I'm sure the table layout just makes it seem ordinary. I read somewhere that it had an old pewter bar counter - I didn't see that. Beer in reasonable nick. with all that history and the location, it could be much much better!

1 Dec 2006 19:48

The Captain Kidd, Wapping

It is Sam Smith's and in a decent little converted warehouse. The beers on tap aren't very good but the bottled stouts and porters are. If you don't care about your beer then all is well and good for you. If you don't like the rubbish in a box then drink the bottles. If you don't like the bottles the pub isn't for you!! IT's by the river and in a good little area but all in all very average.

1 Dec 2006 19:40

The Town of Ramsgate, Wapping

the best on my pub crawl in this area. Reasonable barman. OK beer. typical selection. Lots of wood and old bits and bobs. Tend to agree with the last reviewer apart from the bit about the quiz. Don't know about that.

1 Dec 2006 19:33

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

Thing is, Sam Smith's being cheap as chips is only an illusion as anything they sell which is drinkable sells at normal prices. Any sh*t in a little box isn't!! Great place though.

1 Dec 2006 19:13

Charles Holden, Colliers Wood

Good to see the manager's comments on the site. The pub is obviously making an effort but the pub's too expensive and the choice of lagers is rubbish - Is the selection prescribed to the pub and if so to what extent? Regarding the ales, well they have never been in tip top shape on any of my visits, and have been poor on many. If I haven't had to change my pint I often feel like I'm putting up with the quality. It's a different style of pub from others around but that doesn't mean that it should sell things in inferior condition. My girlfriend likes the pub and although i don't think it's particularly special, I could be persuaded in more often if I thought the beer was better.

Regarding the website, people enjoy the squabbling so maybe you should just overlook that stuff. In fact,
I'm going to partake in the squabbling right now and say that collywood yuppie sounds like a prick!!

1 Dec 2006 13:39

The Dog and Fox, Wimbledon Village

Shut but opening on saturday. Looked inside but didn't look particularly special despite being inside a lovely building. The new pub sign is a bit crap. Still that seems to be the way young's are going.

28 Nov 2006 18:56

The Brewery Tap, Wimbledon Village

Had 2 interesting ales on from 4, which is a plus. The place just feels very nothingy though. I wouldn't want to spend time here just because of the beer. Is it a cafe or shop, someone's backroom or a pub? It doesn't know and nor do I!!!

28 Nov 2006 18:53

The Fox and Grapes, Wimbledon Common

Lovely pub in a lovely location on Wimbledon Common. It looks small from the outside but on the inside there are 2 areas. One is a high ceilinged hall-like room and the other is a lower ceilinged snugger non-smoking room. They had Harveys, Landlord, Some courage stuff and a couple of less familiar ales on. Something from Twickenham I think. One of the handpumps is a cricket bat, in case anyone likes that kind of thing. The barman seemed to be quite into his ale so that must be a good sign. Only been to drink the once though.

Note to widescreen, don't bother there are no tvs here fool!!!

28 Nov 2006 18:50

The Princess Royal, South Wimbledon

The barmaid did appear to be nice. It's a pub in the middle of an estate that shows the horseracing in the day etc etc. It's quite nice inside despite the dubious colour scheme. One downside is the rubbish beer. I'm sure the wine, if they did it, would be worse but frankly I don't give a damn about that. They do serve Ales or rather GK IPA and Courage Directors (Is that quite the same? ) Certainly no match for the Trafalgar or Sultan. Beer lovers new to the area should also note that Nelson Wines is a short walk away and despite their name they have a tremendous selection of beers from around the globe.

28 Nov 2006 18:40

The Brewery Tap, Wandsworth

Looked well and truly closed!! I hope it opens again and the wood isn't repainted in a horrible yellow or greyish colour for no reason at all!!

28 Nov 2006 18:32

The Spread Eagle, Wandsworth

Now that the brewery has closed the bottle situation has fallen off too. They used to have plenty of everything but were lacking at least 3 types of bottles along with the deceased KEW BREW R.I.P. and Zest. Plenty of Banana Bread Rubbish though. They also have a new menu which shows the takeout offer (now 6 for 4 bottles) including Kew Brew!!! I heard that the price of Ordinary is likely to increase by 15p too!!! Let's hope they at least get it right before they do that.

Apart from that, the best pub in the land!!!

28 Nov 2006 18:31

The Grapes, Wandsworth

It's very clean and shiny. Lots of red seating with mirrors above them. A couple of TVs that you wouldn't generally notice and a piano in the corner. Nice staff, obviously know the ropes. It seems well cared for. There is a patio and garden outside, which isn't great for this time of year but good in summer. The beer is obviously treated 'like a lady' and tastes good! Best pint in Wandsworth probably.

28 Nov 2006 18:25

The Ship Inn, Wandsworth

A big conservatory and outside bit where they (used to) do BBQs. There is a restaurant area and also a more pubby area with a cosy little room for 20 off at one point. The food is good and obviously this pub will do well from the newish apartment blocks along the river. The beer wasn't great, 5 handpumps and a very big pub but only ordinary, special and Bombashite. There was a time when most Young's pubs had Waggledance on almost permanently,my mate loved it and at least it was slightly different.
Overall, worth going for the food not the beer or interior!

28 Nov 2006 18:17

The Red Lion, St James

In contrast to my last visit the beer was spot on this time and the barmaid was doing a good job.

27 Nov 2006 13:54

The Windsor Castle, Kensington

Very atmospheric, my favourite pub in this area. Lovely interior. Wasn't too difficult to bag a seat on a saturday night. Yes there were a lot of posh people but not in your face types. There were 3 or 4 ales on, which nearly all ran out by the end of the night. The guest ale was scribbled on a blackboard sign on the handpump but illegibly. When I asked the barman about it he didn't seem to know much, or maybe he did but his English was so poor I couldn't understand a word he said (Japanese I think). To be fair I did get a generous sample from him before buying.

27 Nov 2006 13:52

The Churchill Arms, Kensington

I had a nice pint of Gales Winterbrew and watched a bit of the football while killing some time the other day. The beer was good it's just a bit busy. In fact I've never been in here when it wasn't busy.

27 Nov 2006 13:44

The Doric Arch, Euston

As a station pub it's a bit of hassle getting into the bogs in a hurry but does have a great selection of beers on. Only my second visit but I'm sure i'd pop in a lot more if I had to pass by there.

27 Nov 2006 13:41

The Oxford, Kentish Town

Shame to hear that about the manageress. The staff were all right on my visit but I didn't have any problems. This is a redone pub which has a bit of a gastro feel to it. It did have 3 decent ales on and you can drink them in nice jug but no decent lagers.

27 Nov 2006 13:36

The Westminster Arms, Westminster

returned last week to find it outrageously packed and when I did order a couple of different beers they didn't taste very nice. disappointing visit.

25 Nov 2006 14:43

The White Horse, Parsons Green

That didn't make much sense. Try again: If you don't like the kind of people who frequent the White Horse in the evening, it has a different atmosphere in the day and early evening and is worth going to for the beer selection.

25 Nov 2006 14:36

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

Enjoyed some stout and porter here last night. It never seems to be too busy owing to the size of the place. I love it here but the staff are appalling even to the extent of pouring slops into people's pints. you'd think they'd get an extended licence too!

25 Nov 2006 14:32

St Stephens Tavern, Westminster

Very busy on a rainy day as you might expect. I like the interior and the staff were friendly. The beers are quite good too.

23 Nov 2006 19:23

The Sanctuary House, Westminster

It's ok, standard Fullers but when I went recently the Ales were a bit too cold for my liking.

23 Nov 2006 19:21

The White Horse, Parsons Green

Worth going to for the beer and food. If you want to avoid people you might not like choose a day visit or very early evening.

23 Nov 2006 13:38

The GlassHouse, New Malden

Looked like they were trying to go upmarket. Didn't see much evidence of the bad lot referred to elsewhere but I didn't stay long. Still probably won't return

23 Nov 2006 13:36

The Eagle Ale House, Clapham

A proper pub with good beer. A surprise for this area.

11 Nov 2006 11:39

The Nightingale, Balham

Good place with helpful staff, big contrast to the hope. It hasn't had a needless rubbish refurb. They had winter warmer on and I thought that perhaps Bombadier hadn't made it's way in here yet but it was round the corner. The 4 for 5 take out offer is now 4 for 6. They seem to have replaced Kew Brew with Banana Bread Beer, which I don't like. The barman said they may brew it again as a seasonal in the future.

11 Nov 2006 11:36

Trafalgar Freehouse, South Wimbledon

On all my visits the beer has been consistent. The range of beers is a welcome change to those found elsewhere. No GK IPA to be found here, thank god! Keep it up.

10 Nov 2006 23:59

The Royal Oak, Borough

Ship & Shovel and Sultan (especially the latter) are indeed decent pubs and so is the Oak. I'd like to see another Harvey's and Hop Back pub in central London too. In fact I'd love to see one of them save the Fox and Anchor near Smithfields!!!

As for the brew, I like it. Maybe Ale K should try it again.

10 Nov 2006 23:52

The Hand and Racquet, Covent Garden

I wouldn't recommend here but for the bubbliest Japanes barmaid in the world!!! It's not too busy but it's not for seasoned pub goers.

10 Nov 2006 23:34

The Red Lion, St James

It's wonderful inside but after having drunk in some quality pubs I was disappointed with the quality of the beer. What can u do?

10 Nov 2006 23:28

The Prince of Wales, Clapham

No this is a pretty decent pub. there are 3 ales on and loads of clutter like artificial legs hanging off the ceiling Brilliant, except it's in Clapham,

10 Nov 2006 23:23

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

good old pub with a nice atmosphere but not a great ale selection and they did give me a pint in a hot glass!! However, for some reason I didn't give a monkey#s!

10 Nov 2006 23:09

The Lord Clyde, Borough

What can I say, I didn't believe this was a good pub for so long on someone else's sayso but after repeated visits over the last 18 months I can say that person was talking out of their datehole and this is a gem. The ale selection although well 'behaved' isn't inspiring compared to the Dickens or Porter or Royal Oak but there are enough to keep you happ.

10 Nov 2006 22:55

The Duke of Devonshire, Balham

This is the best pub in this area. It suffers from serving Bombawhasit. Basically, there is a good atmosphere in here and they DO have a decent bottle selection. I didn't see a fourth ale on which a pub this size should have. Good mirrors and woodwork.

10 Nov 2006 22:30

The Alexandra, Wimbledon

At least they had Ram Rod on as well as Bombadier, Special and Ordinary last time I was here.

10 Nov 2006 22:20

The Bunch Of Grapes, Knightsbridge

I recently had a very pleasant return to this pub. Obviously the interior is very nice but the quality of the service had improved no end. The staff were checking you were all right for drinks and remembered what you were drinking etc. The beer also tasted nicer. That said don't expect any unusual ales.

6 Nov 2006 13:30

The Windmill on the Common, Clapham Common

Had a couple in here last night and it has changed a bit inside. I wouldn't really say changed for the better. While it's not all bad, the new decorations don't really fit in with the style of the pub, sitting as it does in the middle of the common. The bar area and colours are just like every other 'new' Young's pub, which isn't a compliment.

I remember being in here around this time last year and enjoying a winter warmer. This year there was only Ordinary and Special (and Bombadier unfortunately). They used to have a full range of bottles to choose from and the take out offer, this seems to be no more. One of the things that has always brought me to Young's pubs has been the bottled beer selection and the seasonal brews. The only bottled beers I was shown were the same as the hand pumped ones and old nick, the three ales on are available in every other pub anyway.

One of the staff members, with her nose pierced, appeared to be giving out the right friendly, impression, others weren't.

Overall, it's convenient for the common and not a place to make an effort to go to.

3 Nov 2006 13:28

The Red Lion, Fernhurst

Fate took me here for Sunday Lunch at the weekend. Old pub but very clean looking. Very low beamed ceiling and was a Fuller's pub. It also had a guest ale on and the beer was in good nick. The food i had was really good. There is a lot of outside seating and it overlooks the village green. Not as special as some old country pubs but certainly worth a pint if you happen to be passing.

1 Nov 2006 19:48

The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch

A good old pub. When I went there was a mix of customers from old men talking about their national service days to local primary school children!! Most were familiar with each other and there was a nice atmosphere. Pleasant bar staff and good beer, Brewers Gold, ESB, London Pride, and Sharp's Doombar. Lots of black and white photos on the walls and wood panelling with a collection of dusty old beer bottles on. It hasn't been 'gentrified' yet. I'll definitely return.

1 Nov 2006 19:43

The Fox and Anchor, Smithfield

I'll second that rant. This place is/was interesting inside and out. A unique drinking experience gone to pot and a curry house is a 'kin ridiculous idea.

1 Nov 2006 19:32

The Fox and Hounds, Belgravia

Indeed and less choice around town for the likes of me.

23 Oct 2006 13:27

All Bar One, Wimbledon

Lovely old bank building. Crap 'pub' with rubbish tasting beer but what do you expect!

23 Oct 2006 13:18

The Fox and Hounds, Belgravia

I'd never been to this pub before so have no idea of what it used to look like but I imagine the back area has been done up judging by the slate tile flooring. However, it is a nice little boozer which still has a traditional feel and is nicely decorated (not the usual yellow that Young's seem to be using for every other pub refurb). People didn't seem too nobby either and beer was fine on my visit.

However, Don't see why they have to have Bombadier there though!! That annoyed me a bit. Young's have plenty of good beers and shouldn't be stocking that when they don't have a full (or near full)compliment of their own beers on (only Ordinary and Special). It's not like Bombadier isn't in every other pub in London!

19 Oct 2006 19:19

Nell of Old Drury, Covent Garden

A theatre pub. Well kept beer.

19 Oct 2006 13:20

The Canterbury Arms, Brixton

Disappointed to see the TV boxes removed and the 1970s tvs replaced. It has a hall out the back for club nights and gigs. It has character, there is wood panelling around the main room and some interesting mirrors and woodwork behind the bar. Decent atmosphere. Loads of beers on offer and all of them taste like sh*t!! If they got rid of half of them and srarted keeping some ales, it would make this place a winner.

15 Oct 2006 14:11

The Opera Tavern, Covent Garden

Looks better from the outside. Really nice barmaid, friendly to allcomers. My pint of Old Hooky was past its best but the toilets were suitably rubbish, and I liked that.

13 Oct 2006 23:17

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

at the right time, wonderful.

13 Oct 2006 23:08

The Plough, Clapham Junction

It's always been a 'locals' pub and with all the other pubs around here that is a good thing. Nice ordinary last time I was here. A few dodgy geezers too. I won't be going back in a hurry but I wouldn't like it to have leather sofas and the like! Actually, i couldn't give a monkeys!

13 Oct 2006 22:46

The Regent, Balham

The prices p*ss me off and the ra ra boys are even worse! Lots of screens for sport but it still doesn't have the atmosphere for it.

13 Oct 2006 22:35

The Hope, Wandsworth Common

'there is something very unpretentious to the place'

Yes darling, absolutely.

13 Oct 2006 22:32

The Northcote, Clapham Junction

a large jazzed up stool

13 Oct 2006 22:28

The Princess Louise, Holborn

Good to know that it will be restored rather than refurbished (wouldn't like to think about that).

On a separate note I tend to stay away from old brewery bitter in SS pubs these days as it never seems particularly nice. Am I the only one to do so? Is there any reason why it doesn't live up to expectations? I do like there stouts though and the pure brewed lager is fine.

13 Oct 2006 22:19

The Edgar Wallace, Temple

It lacks in interior design but it has more than the 'obvious' beers to offer. If you like English beer, or Real ale, it is worth coming here because it is one of the few places where you can try interesting different ales. Try before you buy too! It's in legal land so you can't complain about the people that may turn up at lunchtime or after work if you go. definitely one for a pub crawl.

13 Oct 2006 21:59

The Old Bank of England, Fleet Street

Joe Cool, what did your last comment mean? It doesn't sound finished. get more what? Sex?

This place is classy looking and if you need the cashpoint the fanciest cashpoint in the world is over the road. Downside is the service which can err on the grumpy side at times.

13 Oct 2006 21:51

The Knights Templar, Chancery Lane

What's all this about the toilets? The ones I went to were smart but not 'legendary'. Maybe I went to the wrong ones or the wetherspoons faithful are more used to the long drop!

It was nicely decorated and is a very nice building but is definitely not as nice as it could be. Or am I being fussy? Having said that there were a lot of ales on and a few nooks and crannies where you can avoid people while you drink.

13 Oct 2006 21:41

The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane

Brewers Gold on today but there's no rush to serve you. Landlady is a character and in such a small pub it's difficult to avoid but who cares, at least it is a place where you can find out what everyone is like. Not the perfect pub but a special pub.

13 Oct 2006 21:24

The Crown, Bloomsbury

It's not the best SS pub by a long way but it is still a decent little place to get a drink and space to sit outside, which you don't get everywhere. I wouldn't go out of your way to make a visit. Better than next door and a good place to pop in if you are planning on buying an umbrella!!!

13 Oct 2006 20:26

The Bloomsbury Tavern, Bloomsbury

Standard pub but good for a quiet drink, if you like Shepherd Neame. I don't like their Early Bird or Late Red but do enjoy their standard ales.

13 Oct 2006 20:02

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

I have to agree with Silk Tork's comments, particularly the one about not ordering from the upstairs. Beware: the special isn't special it's ordinary!!! or at least it was when I was in. It was nice but 2 people saw it being pumped from the special pump! The pub itself is great but I've had reason and now have more reason to question those running it!!

13 Oct 2006 19:59

The Salisbury, Leicester Square

No doubt about the interior, very nice. It looked like all the ale pumps were being served through sparklers, which is nice if you want to smell the beer rather than drink it. It didn't taste like sh*t but wasn't right!! First time I've seen that there.

13 Oct 2006 19:50

The Harp, Covent Garden

Every time I go to this pub I have a good time. Nice little buzz, good beer (6 ales)and very nice service. It's all good as far as i'm concerned.

13 Oct 2006 19:44

The Nelson Arms, South Wimbledon/Colliers Wood

It's had a makeover and probably looks ok by it but it really wasn't a great place inside before. Looks great from outside as ever. they look to have quite a lot of interesting entertainment on. No ale as far as I'm aware but if you're into your beer you'd do well to head to the Trafalgar or Sultan instead. Would return for aother chance.

12 Oct 2006 23:53

Charles Holden, Colliers Wood

The ale is usually crap (I've had to give back my pint quite a few times) and there aren't any other decent beer options. The garden is quite nice. Not great for watching football, far too quiet. It doesn't really have any competition in the area for the kind of market it's aiming for. Food is nothing special but OK. Fair play, they are trying to make it interesting by putting on various events.

12 Oct 2006 23:40

The Viaduct Tavern, St Pauls

Couldn't remember if i'd been in there before or not on my visit. Has it always been Fullers? I was probably a few sheets if I had. Anyway, nice interior, paintings on the walls and nice mirrors as well as one of those interesting boxes behind the bar, which I'm led to believe used to be mini offices. Nice atmosphere and view out to the street.3 Fullers Ales on last visit.

5 Oct 2006 20:10

The Charles Dickens, Southwark

Great selection of ales, all not the standard stuff you find around town. The kitchen area smells a bit greasy but then it's a kitchen innit!! Decent pub in a decent area for beer! Go.

5 Oct 2006 20:01

Williamson's Tavern, Mansion House

It's Ok. Worth a pop if you're in the area and it's a nice area too. I preferred the watling though for some reason.

5 Oct 2006 19:56

The Hope and Sirloin, Farringdon

Young's pub with a guest ale. There's a novelty. Decent enough downstairs. Wouldn't mind getting a breakfast here someday.

5 Oct 2006 19:52

The Fox and Anchor, Smithfield

Now the 3rd empty pub in the area!! What's going on? Sign on the door said 'ceased trading'. What does that mean exactly?

5 Oct 2006 19:46

Ye Olde Watling, Mansion House

Nice little pub that feels less Nicholson's than some others. I think it must be a woman's touch, all those scented candles. In a good little spot too and the back room is comfortable. Landlord was in good nick on my recent visit. There's a board with a list of all the ales they might serve in the bar area.

5 Oct 2006 11:34

The Counting House, Bank

Much like the Old Bank of England, it's very plush inside. Positively gleaming and quite stylish. Fullers beers, which are nice. Smack bang in the city so expect it to be busy after work. I don't know if it's open at weekends?

5 Oct 2006 11:29

The London Stone, Cannon Street

This place was crap with no decent lagers or ales and I don't care if it has got a door disguised as a bookcase. Shouldn't it be in a student union somewhere!!

5 Oct 2006 11:22

The Alma Tavern, Wandsworth Town

The pub itself is best enjoyed with only a few people in it. That way you can look around at a nice place, enjoy a pint and have a quick chat before moving on. They have Young's Pilsener which I've been noticing less and less these days.

3 Oct 2006 17:49

The Brewery Tap, Wandsworth

It was open last Friday afternon and the shop was getting rid of its stock. I heard that it would continue as a pub but the staff member I spoke to seemed to be expecting to be laid off at any time. Shame if it closes. Apart from the obvious it's also a good place to pick up a crate or two of their bottled beer. I wonder if the local pubs will have to stop the 4 for 5 takeout offer soon.

3 Oct 2006 17:38

The Hope, Wandsworth Common

The beer was again pretty good on my recent visit and a reasonable selection of lagers too. A good thing about it is it is in Wandsworth Common, a bad thing about it is it is in Wandsworth Common.

3 Oct 2006 17:30

The County Arms, Wandsworth Common

Not at all how I remembered it. It's been done up. By far the largest part of this pub is given up to diners. It seems more of a restaurant now with a smaller front bar. It probably looks nice if you don't like pubby pubs but I do. I'm not sure i'd come here to drink, maybe if i was eating.

3 Oct 2006 17:26

The Star Tavern, Belgravia

Not as nice on the inside as the outside but pleasant and I had a lovely pint of Hock in here. I've only been the once so will try it again when/if in the neighbourhood. A mix of people in there when I was in there, by no means typical of the people who live around that neck of the woods.

3 Oct 2006 17:12

The Antelope, Belgravia

Just around the corner from sloane square. This is a nice old place with fullers beers. The Chiswick went down a treat. The back part of the pub had a timeless feel, which is probably why I was late meeting a friend of mine.

3 Oct 2006 17:05

The Dog and Duck, Soho

Very nice little pub with plenty of nice tiling and charm. Beer has been good on all my visits and particularly good on my last visit. Upstairs by the window is a nice spot if you like people watching. By the toilet might be better if you're gonna get well and truly swerved up!

3 Oct 2006 16:51

The Yorkshire Grey, Fitzrovia

Nice little pub. small with nice partitioning around the wall tables. Usual SS drinks. The back area around the fire is very pleasant, with some nice tiles and random snob screens. I've been a few times and it's never been too busy. This means you can get a good look at the pub and get a seat but it probably lacks a bit of atmosphere.

3 Oct 2006 16:44

The Angel in the Fields, Bond Street

Pleasant Sam Smiths pub, nice windows/decor, cheap drinks. It's nice inside when the sun shines through the windows. I've never found anything to slag it off about yet, lack of toilet paper perhaps.

3 Oct 2006 16:35

The Barley Mow, Marylebone

the drinking boxes to the left of the bar are the main reason for going out of your way to visit this pub. It's very open at the front with a TV on one wall. There's a little back room which is quite pleasant. There was only London Pride on tap on my visit but it was very nice. I'd visit again if passing just to drink in one of the boxes or on a crawl. Barmaid was pleasant on my visit.

3 Oct 2006 16:28

The Guinea, Mayfair

A very nice pint of ordinary and their 'award winning' steak and kidney pies looked nice but I didn't have time to indulge. Charming barmaid who was very friendly and smiley. The old chipped wood around the place gave it a certain charm. I'd like to go back in the evening sometime and perhaps another lunchtime for a pie!!

3 Oct 2006 16:18

The Sultan, South Wimbledon

I have to praise this place again. Great beer, nice staff. If you like Hop Back Ales this is great. Radio can be on but no tv. 1.75 a pint every wed night. Downside is that there never seems to be a mixed sex crowd, but with beer this good every now and again I'd rather make love to that instead .

27 Sep 2006 22:57

Trafalgar Freehouse, South Wimbledon

Recommended. Tiny place and a local pub squashed between an industrial estate and a housing estate but not too far from South wimbledon or Colliers wood tubes. Great beer, about 4-5 interesting ales and some different cider and lagers to have. Very small. Like your granny's front room 35 years ago with a big ship wheel in the middle. If you are in the area or visiting the sultan take a moment out to go. Small bar but punters get out of your way when you go to the bar. Service friendly. Check out the website for more info. I liked it.

27 Sep 2006 22:51

Kings Arms, Victoria

It was an OK pub near a big train station. They had a guest ale and 2 more. Some old decor left. Not amazing but OK if you're passing, which I have a few times of late.

26 Sep 2006 13:32

The Cask and Glass, Victoria

Small and relaxed. wood. Small bar. Pub Pub . This is a pleasant little place for a quiet one. 4 Neame beers on but I didn't like 3 of them. Not because they were bad though. I just have my favourites.

26 Sep 2006 13:29

The Westminster Arms, Westminster

They have about 6 ales on I think. Upstairs is open with no tables but downstairs has some good little booths to drink in and they serve food (haven't sampled it). I will return to see if I really like it another day as I have no real opinion as yet.

26 Sep 2006 13:20

The Two Chairmen, St James's

The paintings on the far wall were interesting and contributed most of the character to the inside of the pub. Small and comfortable. Beer was fine. I would pop in here if I was in the area again. Perhaps not just after 5pm.

26 Sep 2006 13:15

The Albert, St James's

I can't add much to the last poster. It looks good from the outside and inside is quite nice and dusty looking but a bit disappointing compared to outside. The beer i had in here wasn't great but not bad. I don't know why but I wouldn't go out of my way to go again.

26 Sep 2006 13:11

The Buckingham Arms, Westminster

Pleasant open pub (on the inside). I was in there in the afternoon and it was deathly quiet. Silent. A few people supping on a pint and absolutely no noise. I quite liked it, I don't get that at home!!

Pleasant girl serving who seemed to be aware of what the regulars drink when they entered the pub and was ready to pour by the time they got to the bar. A dashing pint of ordinary, if I may be so bold as to call it so. They had a good range of Young's bottles including Oatmeal Stout and the celebration ltd edition brew thingy that's a bit strong for me.

26 Sep 2006 13:03

The Prince of Wales, Wimbledon

When I've been in here it's never been too busy. It's been done up a couple of times I think in my lifetime but nothing too drastic. The inside is still pleasant and pubby. There are usually about 5 ales on (1 is usually different the rest standard), Leffe, Budvar and the usual. It's nice but I haven't risked the food here, nor will I any time soon. I've not had a bad pint there and I saw a sign that they were having live music here at some point.

22 Sep 2006 14:53

Birreria Peroni, Rome

Popular Germanesque beer hall with good, well-priced food in small dishes. I believe it was designed in the 20s/30s. Dark wooden benches and tables. Old pictures and various sayings about beer in Italian on the walls. The table cloths give you a potted history in both Italian and English.

I'm not a big fan of the standard Italian beers but I did enjoy them in here. The standard Peroni was not for me, the Nastro Azzuro hit the spot (probably down to the weather outside)which surprised me as I've never enjoyed one before and may never again!! The Doppio Malto Gran Riserva was very nice, and the Red wasn't bad either.

Service was friendly and excellent, they were on the ball. Overall, I'd say I really enjoyed this place. A nice lunchtime experience and change from the standard cafe bars around Rome. Local workers eat here but I think they do get some tour groups coming too.
Stylish and fun and the best beer I tasted in Rome.

22 Sep 2006 14:38

The Shaston Arms, Soho

I don't have a problem with it in most pubs but some just seem to trap it. How smokeee a place is may determine whether someone chooses to go there or not so it's fair enough to mention it in my book, particularly on a review site and especially if it's made me feel physically sick.

I was definitely having a bad time with the smowke last night but there's an outside that I tarred this and the other pub I visited with the same brush as the Argyll Arms, which had already made me feel rough.

Best I get back to school now to do some lines and work on avoiding dodgy puns.

21 Sep 2006 19:05

The Rake, London Bridge

Noticed this one wasn't up yet. A small bar but very light with a few high stools inside. Outside is a platformed kind of terraced area. Good for the summer. It was pretty expensive but the selection of world beers was extensive. They had 2 real ales on (both Dark Star ones at the time), a kolsch, belgian pale ale, wheat beer and something else on draught, if my memory serves me rightly. Loads of bottles. If you like beer, you'll like it.

20 Sep 2006 17:39

The Argyll Arms, Oxford Circus

I love this pub and would like to go there more often for an evening, unfortunately I can only ever manage one drink before everything tastes and smells of tobacco and it always seems such an effort to get the bar staff's attention and then when you are served there is a communication difficulty, which means you get the wrong drinks or told the wrong price so you're forced to question your change or something like that. Perhaps I don't love it after all. Perhaps I just love the interior design!!

20 Sep 2006 17:20

The Shaston Arms, Soho

It was quite smokey in there and the Stinger I had didn't taste great. I've had a nice pint in there before though. The girls behind the bar were nice enough but it's a small bar and I wouldn't want to go when it is really busy. Overall, quite nice. It's a relatively new pub isn't it?

20 Sep 2006 17:14

The White Horse, Soho

Average pub, but like most pubs in this area to smokey. Can't really say much more. It does a job.

20 Sep 2006 17:10

The Mulberry Bush, Lambeth

Harmless. I noticed they had something called Young's Smooth on one of the taps. Why would you want to drink that? I had a ram rod from the pump.

18 Sep 2006 15:26

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

Had a few in here the other afternoon, beer was nice, as it usually is on my visits. I've never noticed the smell myself but I've never bothered going when it's busy so could be wrong. The building is fantastic. Saw the food but didn't eat it. The bloke who seemed to be in charge looked like he'd been on the sauce since 10am last wednesday, or is he just a friendly regular?

18 Sep 2006 15:24

The Duke of Devonshire, Balham

A jolly nice splash in a jolly nice Victorian (?)pub.
They had bott;es of Oatmeal Stout there for sale. I haven't seen that in any other Young's pubs around.

14 Sep 2006 13:15

The Bedford, Balham

I like it but the beer was poor last night

14 Sep 2006 13:13

The Exhibit, Balham

Go to the restuarant. Bar is just a very expensive bar so i'd go elsewhere for a more chilled out less showy drink. Fair enough if you want to look at the girls.

13 Sep 2006 17:53

The Sultan, South Wimbledon

I've been popping in here for a while now and everytime the beer has been spot on. All of them. I always enjoy the hand pulled stout. You don't see that everywhere.

1 Sep 2006 21:14

The Anglesea Arms, Chelsea

This is a nice little pub. I didn't find it too expensive at all even considering where it is. Barman was good able to deal with more than one order at a time. Inside it's got character. I heard the food was good which you'd expect in this area. Love it or hate is it's a very pretty part of town. 6 ales on Pride 2 adnams Brakspears and 2 hogs back, in good nick too.

1 Sep 2006 21:08

The Belle Vue, Clapham Common

All right I suppose, to meet up in. Harvey's was poor on my visit. I was also intrigued by the Jaegermeister cooling machine although not sufficiently to drink any of it!! Overall, I wouldn't go out of your way to visit.

29 Aug 2006 15:22

The Spread Eagle, Wandsworth

I dragged my Doris down here and she was well chuffed! So chuffed, she thought it a good idea to drag me home for Match of the Day!!! A winner all round. It was pretty empty and the staff were a bit bored. There was a private function in the back room with a lot of pensioners dancing the 2 step to 1980s music. The one man in the pub was an old toothless fella with hat on talking to himself. Naturally, I loved this sight but then I just love the place anyway. Admittedly, it's not the wildest place on the saturday night but it's still brilliant!! I hope it's still there when i'm 90.

22 Aug 2006 18:01

The East Hill, Wandsworth

Ok it doesn't have the charismatic grubbiness that I usually go for in a pub but I quite liked it. Inside looks much better than out. I ate in there and the food was good. They had T.E.A on one of the handpumps which you don't see in many places. The atmosphere was far less ra-ra-ra than down the road at the Alma. The staff were all polite and efficient. It's a place I'd go to eat and have a few but if I were just drinking then I'd opt for the Grapes.

22 Aug 2006 17:53

The Lockside Lounge, Camden

Last time I was here, I waited so long I walked out. Shame because they had some nice bottles in the fridge incl Summer Lightning.

14 Aug 2006 00:34

The Elephants Head, Camden

agree with the last beer comment. I was in there again and I always worry when I've resorted to an ice cold Newcastle Brown because I can't find anything I want. However, I do enjoy the atmosphere and the DJs when they play. Crowded mind.

14 Aug 2006 00:31

The Prince of Wales, Merton

Outside seating area. Inside is fairly 20th Century traditional. Quiet on a sunday. A very nice splash of ordinary & special. If you like Young's ales they appear to be very well kept.

Wanted to get some bottled takeouts but the barman said they charged 2.40 for them. Shame as they almost had the full range and I wanted some.

I wouldn't go out of my way for a visit but it's of a quality.

13 Aug 2006 23:26

The Kings Head, Tooting

Will they be showing live sport now the footie season is underway?

9 Aug 2006 17:07

The Black Lion, Hammersmith

I liked it, had two more interesting ales on as well as a couple of standards. Pride probably and something else. Nice feel inside. The food was very good and the staff were actually friendly and efficient. Inside was good and there was a really long room in there, which apparently used to be a skittles alley although it's seating now. It's in a very nice area with character. And a bit of 'istory thrown in!

7 Aug 2006 17:40

The Dove Inn, Hammersmith

Excellent little place. History and location and great little bar as you come in. Good in summer and winter. barmaid a little moody, think she wanted to go home. My beer wasn't great either.

7 Aug 2006 17:35

The Wheatsheaf, Wandsworth

I'd try it again though because apart from the blue paint and pictures, scarves etc everywhere it has character. I hope the beer is better next time. I've no idea if it's got a reputation for being lairy or not so I wouldn't paint it with that brush.

7 Aug 2006 17:28

The Cittie of Yorke, Holborn

Think that barmaid must have been confused. Perhaps something similar did happen on that location but definitely not in those surroundings, which are much more modern than they think.

Tis a great place though, with a nice fireplace. I like it.

7 Aug 2006 17:17

The Brewery Tap, Wandsworth

double chocolate stout on tap and oatmeal stout as well as another on tap. friendly staff and shop next door. brewery tour good.

27 Jul 2006 21:58

The Hop Pole, Wandsworth

Being of Irish stock myself (and even if I wasn't)I have no problem with your Irish friends or anyone else's for that matter. That comment wasn't made as a criticism it was a comment that there seemed to be a slight Irish theme and custom in the pub. Admittedly, with hindsight it was a poorly executed comment and it may even be inaccurate but it was one I was entitled to make without being accused of being some kind of racist thug. That said I apologize if it did cause offence.

I stand by my opinion on the interior (dull = uninteresting) and the beer on my visit.

27 Jul 2006 19:42

The Grapes, Wandsworth

I've also got to say that although this is situated in the middle of the one way system, you'd never really think it when you're in the garden. I've had some bad pints in Wandsworth, notably in the Wheatsheaf and the Hop Pole but it sounds like this place and the spread eagle always do a good drop.

27 Jul 2006 18:06

The Hop Pole, Wandsworth

definitely didn't have that experience. It was very dull inside. Full of Irish people, which is fine. The Master Brew was 'orrible, I didn't drink it and I didn't fancy the masterbrew smooth!!! Certainly not!

From the outside it looks great.

27 Jul 2006 14:02

The Wheatsheaf, Wandsworth

Great little place to look at but the beer was rubbish last night and there was too much chelsea crap everywhere!!

27 Jul 2006 14:00

The Grapes, Wandsworth

I had just about the best pint of ordinary I've ever had in here. Nice place. Good outside space with a garden and a roof covering. Nice inside decor. Has character and may I mention again the splash, it was gorgeous!!

27 Jul 2006 13:59

The Spread Eagle, Wandsworth

Full bottled selection. including last night some 'ltd edition' anniversary ale. Always in good nick the beer. Quiet but I love this place.

27 Jul 2006 13:56

The Rose and Crown, Wandsworth

Seemed Ok a couple of guest ales on Brakespears and another strange one. Didn't taste perfect but the barmais was very friendly and cheery. It's OK.

27 Jul 2006 13:54

The Crane, Wandsworth

Was closed for a refurb last night.

27 Jul 2006 13:53

The Market Porter, Borough

Not sure what that was in response to but anyway. Ideally, and I say ideally, there could be two boards. The board on your left as you come in the front entrance, whilst being delightful, doesn't really tell us anything useful. How about something there as well as the stupid cupboardy thing!?!

25 Jul 2006 19:19

The William Morris, Merton Abbey Mills

slow slow service and irritable punters, don't know which came first. The male staff member was polite but they weren't busy and were struggling. I couldn't be bothered and walked out and that was the second time I've done that for the same reasons of late. Just wanted a quick pint after the market. It remains a good location and they often have different ales on but overall service ruins it and the ales aren't well kept. For better beer go to the Sultan or Trafalgar and see if you can fool your Doris into imagining they are in a beautiful location.

24 Jul 2006 13:30

The Market Porter, Borough

Popped in for 3 pints on Saturday eve. 2 great one decidedly average. Nice evening and dusk atmosphere inside and out. I noticed they had a tap with Meantime Helles/Wheat/raspberry beers on. I've never noticed that before. when did that happen? I think it's good thing to have some locally produced beer in London pubs, particularly in light of events in Wandsworth. I wasn't in a rush to try them mind!!

I'd like it if they always kept a stout/porter and mild on and somewhere where we could see what beers were on at any given moment. The last bit is only an issue when it gets busy and you have to fight your way around the bar to see the other 6 handpumps.

Still a monster in my books.

23 Jul 2006 14:22

The Hand and Raquet, Wimbledon

Not as good as the Alexandra but at least it's a change from young's beers. Really nothing special about it. Would rather have a bottle of Champion next door.

19 Jul 2006 13:58

The Chandos, Trafalgar Square

It's all right in here. Hadn't drunk downstairs for a long while but I seem to remember the downstairs bar being in a different position to now and it was less open. I'm thinking 10 years back and I could be wrong. I had the pure brewed lager for a change and it was ok.

12 Jul 2006 13:56

The Harp, Covent Garden

Excellent place. Good boozes. Busy and the staff were still really friendly and made an effort to help out or speak to you. Still haven't got round to eating the sausages!!! A favourite, this one.

12 Jul 2006 13:52

The Salisbury, Leicester Square

Each to his own. Like it or not, it's a classic. Pints of Leffe are notoriously expensive anyway. If you can find a place to serve you a whole pint of it that is! Clientele varies as it can do in central locations. Well worth the visit.

12 Jul 2006 13:41

The Duke (of York), Holborn

I went there and although the staff were pleasant i shouldn't have to wait for my change while they take a phone call for 5 minutes. Great decor. Never been when they've been busy. Expensive looking food.

11 Jul 2006 17:44

The Perseverance, Holborn

2 barstaff 1 customer and it took about 5 minutes to get any attention. Expensive Directors which tasted like melted poo. Got shortchanged by the barman and had to wait to get his attention again. He tried to tell me I was wrong and only when he got his calculator out did we decide I was right in the first place (it was a basic sum). Absolutely no apology just attitude. Shan't return.

Benches around the place look ok. that's it. Luckily there's a good place down the road.

11 Jul 2006 17:40

The Dolphin Tavern, Bloomsbury

Fair to middling

11 Jul 2006 17:32

The Museum Tavern, Bloomsbury

Urf has a fair point. People love slagging off others but happily forget their own behaviour after a few. Pubs are pubs for the public to share with the exception of people who wear pastel coloured jumpers over their shoulders or boating shoes, they can sod off!!

Great range of ales in good nick. Tried a couple of new ones, which was nice. There isn't much room and it's very close to the museum so you wouldn't always expect much room. I'm always happy to get in people's way if they're wearing boating shoes.

couldn't give a toss about the food here but I presume it's not all that?? I'd eat elsewhere.

11 Jul 2006 17:31

The Princess Louise, Holborn

What? This is a cracking place. I'd be happy to drink Panda Cherryade in here the interior is that impressive. OK I grant you that the toilets could be better looked after (just cleaned). After all they are part of the pub too. As far as Sam Smith pubs go, I generally find them ok and although I don't rate old brewery bitter much I enjoy some of the bottled stuff. People who don't know about Sam Smith's places generally feel put off by the unfamiliarity of the drinks on offer rather than by any logical train of thought. Stunning interior 'pushing it a bit' ?? Well, when you're used to Kingsmeadow....

11 Jul 2006 17:18

The Lamb, Bloomsbury

Fantastic little place. Nice selection of beers of course. Good decor. Nice staff in contrast to the W$$$$ in the Perserverance!! What's the score with upstairs.

11 Jul 2006 14:04

The Alexandra, Wimbledon

I like the place. Crap food though. Beer always great but they run out of bottles too much. I hate walkabout.

6 Jul 2006 15:27

The Ship and Shovell, Charing Cross

3 a pint about but I like it. The 2 halves have slightly different atmospheres. Nice beer everytime I go.

5 Jul 2006 13:54

The Sherlock Holmes, Charing Cross

A nice building, with a mock up sherlock holmes study on the first floor. A bit disappointing downstairs though. Nice from the outside. Prefer the Ship and Shovel though.

5 Jul 2006 13:52

The Edgar Wallace, Temple

Nice outside ok inside. helpful barman. Had 6 beers on that i'd never heard of. Was able to do a taste test before buying. It was a lovely wash but I can't remember what it was! Robin Hood's Septic toe or something like that!

5 Jul 2006 13:46

The Devereux, Temple

It's in an interesting location and you would expect something more interesting on the inside but it wasn't to be.

5 Jul 2006 13:43

The Cheshire Cheese, Temple

I popped in here recently and liked what I saw. The drinks weren't as interesting as round the corner but it looks good and the bar staff were very friendly. As the previous comment said he was a gentleman. Adnams was ok.What's the food like?

5 Jul 2006 13:42

Ye Grapes, Mayfair

Me likes this place! But...despite a sign on the door saying the ales were so well kept..and despite a good choice...none of the ones I had tasted right!! 3 a pint as well. It's expensive work this pubgoing! Not an inspiring beer selection outside of this either. Nice little place in a nice little area. Bring loadsofit though!

23 Jun 2006 20:30

The Grenadier, Belgravia

On my recent visit the beer was fine and the place hadn't changed of course. Varied clients, all a bit squiffy in the sun. The service was adequate but not friendly or welcoming for such a small place. History and character yes and in a good little place.

23 Jun 2006 20:26

The Nags Head, Belgravia

Great little place. Another visit confirmed this. Good Adnams brews. No mobiles here. Decent staff. I'm sure there were a couple of changes since my last visit but this could be my memory letting me down. I seem to remember a funny handpump and something in the backroom, which wasn't there! Anyone?

23 Jun 2006 20:21

Paxtons Head, Knightsbridge

Agree with john bonser, not the best atmosphere overpriced but still nice to drink in such surroundings, even if the beer wassn't 100%. Would only return occasionally

23 Jun 2006 20:18

The Bunch Of Grapes, Knightsbridge

They had Youngs, london Pride and I think Bombadier (typical selections I know) on my visit so perhaps jorrocks wasn't looking in enough vantage points. Took me a while to get served by the surly blonde eastern european girl behind the bar. Lovely mirrors and wood everywhere. I liked it and the rough types and Americans were fine by me.

23 Jun 2006 20:15

The Market Porter, Borough

Think Harvey's is fine but I don't think any of the drinks mentioned would turn anyone on to the delights of 'real ale' if they were new to it! I suggest forcing it down their throats through a funnel nine days in a row, that's what I've been trying with my mates.

Came here on a quiet sunday recently and was very happy to get a seat. There weren't any stouts or porters on though, which was a shame!

23 Jun 2006 20:08

The William Morris, Merton Abbey Mills

Selection of ale was good but it has never been that well kept in my experience. the only Good location in the wastelands of Colliers Wood. Also far too smokey!

Got nothing to say about the regulars, as they're regulars and I'm not. Staff were fine.

30 May 2006 13:23

The Nelson Arms, South Wimbledon/Colliers Wood

Lovely appearance outside and the tiled pictures look great in my opinion. Horrible inside. Nothing much to recommend it. Looks closed now. For refurbishment?? Maybe someone will turn it into a decent pub.

30 May 2006 13:19

The Hole In The Wall, Waterloo

I took my missus and she said she wouldn't go again! Bit smelly maybe but has it's own CIU like charm. Fantastic beer and the Battersea Bitter was delightful. I'll be back

29 May 2006 15:55

The Northgate, Islington

Nice drop of deuchars. The barman obviously liked it too. Nothing special otherwise but ok

21 May 2006 15:51

The Duke of Cambridge, Islington

I thought it was all right. I quaffed some very nice beer in here. The food looked very nice and it smelled good, don't know how it tasted. I didn't really take much notice of the other people in here, so they can't have been so offensive as to make me not want to return.

As opposed to the usual grubby pubs that I tend to visit (out of choice) I could happily come here with my Doris! Think we'd have to go halves if we were eating though.

21 May 2006 15:47

The White Horse, Parsons Green

Good pub for beer and food.Ale well kept. They have a menu where they recommend a beer for each dish. Didn't take too long to get served, staff were busy but as my graandmother used to say it doesn't take a second to smile, or was that Brian Clough? Either way they didn't appear to have a second.

Inside is quite pleasant. Overpriced burnt sausages outside. It's a good location though. Not my place to comment on the clientele, don't really care if they don't bother me BUT having said that there were a lot of jumpers residing over shoulders when I was in there although this was somewhat offset by the posh fanny knocking around.

The bishop's comments were a bit worrying. Who are they to tell people how to drink? Can't they trust people to enjoy their beer properly. Or can't they be bothered to collect bottles from tables.

21 May 2006 15:37

The Sultan, South Wimbledon

A further visit confirmed the beer really is very good. Plenty of beardy types and others. I like the pub and the atmosphere. If I had been alive at the time, i'm sure it would remind me of 50s England. Will be back. Hopefully, so will the morris dancers!

The downside was it was a little smoky and you're unlikely to meet your future wife there I would imagine. I don't think it would impress my Doris much anyway, even if she does like Taiphoon.

21 May 2006 15:15

The Hope, Wandsworth Common

Wasn't it a crappy firkin pub before. Beers were good last time I was here. Food was cack, service average. I'm glad you can't reserve a table - It's a PUB!!

19 May 2006 13:21

Serjeants, Fleet St

Never been inside - what's it like?

4 May 2006 15:42

Ye Olde Cock Tavern, Fleet Street

Staff always show their true colours writing about their own pubs in such a way. Quite a bland place, verging on rubbish inside. Possibly the worst pub in the area! Looks ok from the outside, which is where I recommend people stay!

4 May 2006 15:41

The Sultan, South Wimbledon

Had my first visit since i moved nearby and was right chuffed about the stout!!

2 May 2006 13:27

The Elephants Head, Camden

Good atmosphere. Bit pricey. Interesting crowd. Top music the other saturday.

2 May 2006 13:25

The Red Lion, St James

bootiful place. Another nice visit. Had some friendly punters in as well. Adnams bad but youngs and Pride and Bombadier were all good. Will be back.

24 Apr 2006 16:57

The Harp, Covent Garden

Another satisfying visit to the harp. friendly barmaid. next time i'll have a sausage

24 Apr 2006 16:54

The Kings Head, Tooting

Can't agree with the last comment. As a listed building the pub LOOKS great but the change in atmosphere is for the worse in my opinion. The Food is very ordinary (but not a massive change there)and the atmosphere too. The ales are not well kept but they did have Budvar and Leffe there I suppose.

It used to be my pub of choice but recently it's lost it. I only go if I have to. Admittedly, there aren't many great pubs in Tooting. They don't seem to want you to go there to watch sport there anymore. It's a pity.

It's worth going if you like pub interiors because it does look good. Go elsewhere for better food. Elsewhere for sports and sunday afternoon loungin'. Elsewhere for better beer. Pity.

12 Apr 2006 17:29

The Dickens Inn, Tower Hill

Have to disagree. The pizzas were rubbish. typical crap served up to tourists. The building is good as is location but inside it's like a harvester and the beer I had was in bad nick. don't bother.

4 Apr 2006 17:12

The Sutton Arms, Barbican

salright. Had London Porter on tap. a rather rich splash.

31 Mar 2006 13:18

The Fox and Anchor, Smithfield

Simply wonderful.

31 Mar 2006 13:17

The Hand and Shears, Barbican

Friendly staff on my visit. Great place. yippee doo

31 Mar 2006 13:16

The Rising Sun, Smithfield

Good. They didn't have any of their bottled beers though.

31 Mar 2006 13:16

The Bishop's Finger, Barbican

Nice splash of Finger! For that it's worth going

31 Mar 2006 13:14

The Windsor Castle, Kensington

This was wick-ed as the locals or hugh laurie might say. Qualidee!

17 Mar 2006 18:59

The Churchill Arms, Kensington

Bonza. Beer was good. Atmosphere niyshe. Didn't get the impression that it was more of a rest than pub and i'm funny about that. Does do a lot though. Good decor. nice screens on bar. 'sholid' as Sean Connery would say if he was a cockney.

17 Mar 2006 18:58

The Wellington, Strand

Quite nice. Good fittings. Beer good but not peak! Bar Staff's English was acceptable on my visit, mine was decaying slightly -end of the night!

13 Mar 2006 13:18

The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane

Quality place, nice food, friendly barmaid and old man at the bar. Cramped but then it's an old little pub. I'd go again.

13 Mar 2006 13:15

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

cheers. I look forward to doing that and enjoying a pickled egg, which i think i spied.

13 Mar 2006 13:13

The Coal Hole, Strand

Spitfire on tap. I think it was nice, was a bit wellied though. I quite like the design of the place. OK not great.

10 Mar 2006 16:57

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

nice charcoal smell in there, open fire I think and I was there so it can't be all bad.

10 Mar 2006 13:13

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

mind you i couldn't find much last night, i was in a bit of a way

10 Mar 2006 13:11

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

Looked good. excellent toilet facilities but i couldn't find the cherry tree

10 Mar 2006 13:10

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

this one is exymondo but not a place for fat people. Although I have no problem with fat people and they are welcome there as far as I'm concerned!

10 Mar 2006 13:07

The Cittie of Yorke, Holborn

to quote nineties kiddy rappers kriss kross The place was wickedy-wickedy wack! Brillyant!

10 Mar 2006 13:03

The Hoop and Toy, South Kensington

Tried again and the condition of their ales is far worse than the selection. At least they do them I suppose

7 Mar 2006 13:17

The Zetland Arms, South Kensington

Been popping in here on my way home from elsewhere for a while now and it's just nice. People aren't annoying, staff are ok and the beer is always in good nick. A solid one

7 Mar 2006 13:15

The Coach and Horses, Mayfair

Had a nice one but didn't realise it closed at 8!!

6 Mar 2006 15:34

Gordon's Wine Bar, Charing Cross

marvellous

5 Mar 2006 15:21

The Bell And Compass, Charing Cross

a meeting place really

5 Mar 2006 15:15

The Red Lion, St James

popped in on a sat night and there were about 10 people. Great decor nice beer loved the glass (on the wall). loved it.

staff language was ok on this occasion but in the argyll arms up the road there was plenty of miscommunication afoot! i'll moan about that elsewhere!!

5 Mar 2006 15:05

The Pontefract Castle, Marylebone

nice basement. ok for location. The young's wasn't up to scratch though.

5 Mar 2006 14:53

The Tudor Rose, Marylebone

good little bare boards pub nice windows, fire and watched footie results come in. pride wasn't up to scratch though.

5 Mar 2006 14:44

The Lamb Tavern, Leadenhall Market

A nice pub in a beautiful location. You couldn't not enjoy having a drink here. Well perhaps you could, you know how them there city types can get!!

3 Mar 2006 17:10

Dirty Dick's, Bishopsgate

I wish the dirty stuff was back. Good. I like Young's beer but Not all their current new look pub refurbishments - too much travelodge yellow in them for me. You can tell it's a Young's pub But there are lots of good corners and stuff in here and I liked it especially for it's location. It's a pity there was no Dirty Dick's on handpump in there for novelty value. Barman serving had a pleasant manner.

3 Mar 2006 17:07

The Windmill on the Common, Clapham Common

Yes it's expensive and I got given a bottle that had been radiated by some kind of medi light. It almost melted the plastic glass they gave me to drink it in. It'd have been enough to give me blisters if I hadn't already got them. and I thought I liked my beer a bit on the warm side. Food was standard, too pricey. It's alright 6/10

28 Feb 2006 19:03

The Green Man and French Horn, Covent Garden

It was good in here actually - old peculiar on tap and another one i was too squiffy to remember. narrow and long and this created a nice atmosphere without too many people. No frills especially compared to the Salisbury across the road but all the same. Didn't and probably wouldn't try the food.

28 Feb 2006 18:54

The Harp, Covent Garden

A little gem I reckon. The beer was washin down well and it's little and I got a seat on a saturday night - cowa-bloomin-bunga!!

28 Feb 2006 18:50

St Stephens Tavern, Westminster

Very nice. Good splashes and great decor. Food was OK some reasonably priced food. Did I say great decor and good splashes. ra ra ra

20 Feb 2006 11:33

The Market Porter, Borough

Excellent bit of stirring there! I think Lager is alright from time to time but it's not really in the same league as ale for me. If only having Fosters encourages people to drink a traditional decent British beer then I'm all for it. There are enough beers there to find one you like surely.

16 Feb 2006 17:43

The Chandos, Trafalgar Square

Just Good and solid with interesting pictures on the walls and nice sofas upstairs and i'm partial to some of their brews.

12 Feb 2006 21:11

The Salisbury, Leicester Square

Went on Saturday night and it was very pleasant apart from my mates that is.

12 Feb 2006 21:01

The Rising Sun, Smithfield

This was greeeeeat on a saturday night, very quiet but greaat. I enjoyed the pumped ale. Yes I did.

20 Jan 2006 17:42

The Kings Head, Tooting

WHO has got nothing better to do? I think the lady concerned is in the wrong pub if she doesn't like the regulars. They are 'regulars' after all. I like this pub less and less. The pub should look after the needs of these people not isolate them because the management want new people in the pub. The community want and need access to the football and the amount of people who go there/used to go there to watch the football is testament to that. The plasma screens are in a ridiculous place and there aren't enough of them. A big screen is needed for a pub this size, other pubs manage to get them working and a pub of this status should also. The ale is still not up to scratch. Service is poor but perhaps the men are a little lechy!!

12 Jan 2006 11:33

The Porterhouse, Covent Garden

Cruzcampo is rubbish anyway. Their own beers are pretty good here and the bar is good design like it or not. Nothing wrong with antipodeans, but your typical covent garden crowd doesn't make for the best atmospheres or prices. I'd go for the beer if around that neck of the woods but you wouldn't catch me paying the ridiculous prices for the bottled beers.

9 Jan 2006 15:31

The Market Porter, Borough

Went on Friday between about 5-8 and it was horrible. Just because of the amount of people. However, well impressed with the bar staff again who are always on the ball and they notice you want a splash of booze even when you are behind three people and just tryng to get a glimpse of the bar. I hope that more pubs addopting this style with similar drinks and service open and this one doesn't get ruined by its fame.

19 Dec 2005 16:15

The Selkirk, Tooting

Isn't it called the skylark?? This was OK. The decor is VERY boring. There was London Pride and probably one guest ale both OK. The staff were very friendly and not what i was expecting. Good stuff!! I wanted to dislike the place because i'm an inverse snob but it's a decent pub. OK little back room. Just nice! The management have got an interactive approach so it seems - One more Ale please...

11 Dec 2005 00:37

The Castle, Tooting Broadway

It was exactly what it should be - a mix of people a few geezers in their pork pie hats, rugger buggas, some shoppers, some spanish ladies - good beer but not amazing! People might say hello to you here - BE CAREFUL....

11 Dec 2005 00:32

The Halfway House, Earlsfield

The bonser knows best BUT I think the pub tends to be full of older regulars - which is good! The front of the pub always seems to be full of the locals while the back has much younger feel! There used to be a screen for footie doesn't seem to be there anymore but it wouldn't be my footie pub of choice anyway! So where do you watch footie in Earlsfield???

11 Dec 2005 00:25

The Leather Bottle, Earlsfield

OH MY GOD!!! I used to live round the corner and this place was a godsend! I've been recently and WHAT HAVE THEY DONE!!! What happened to the small place the idea of character????? It's more a restaurant now!! It's like any hotel now and I don't think I'll go back for a drink. If the food turns out to be decent after all this I may go once in a while but ...It's ruined!!! It's all square badly painted and the 'regulars' can't be that regular because none that I knew were in there on a saturday night. Says a lot really!!! The only pub that has shocked me cuz of its change... !!!

11 Dec 2005 00:20

The Nags Head, Belgravia

Excellent. Loved it. Will make a visit whenever i'm in the area!!

10 Dec 2005 13:03

The Grenadier, Belgravia

Will be back for the bloody mary! Good little place. Very charismatic. Nice ale. Very small.

10 Dec 2005 13:01

The Cockpit, Blackfriars

Good little place outside and in. Nice and grubby. Old school boozer with a bit of 'istory. Some old geezers having a laugh. Not encouraging to see the manager's response to criticism on this website. Still he's probably right!

10 Dec 2005 12:56

The Maple Leaf, Covent Garden

Too much smoke. Probably OK for sport judging by the number of tvs. Ale was good. Nothing special

10 Dec 2005 12:48

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

Good good pub. Nothing amazing but location is good atmosphere is good beer is good the carpet is good. My opinion : It's good.

10 Dec 2005 12:44

Bertie's Bar, Wimbledon

good little venue. Just let it be a cellar bar. Nothing upsetting about it at all.

10 Dec 2005 11:59

The Wheatsheaf, Ewell

Please tell me this place is still the same charming little nutcracker as ever... it used to be a right good watering hole. looking forward to going back.

9 Dec 2005 22:18

The Sutton Arms, Barbican

It#s the nuts.

9 Dec 2005 22:02

Barley Mow, Smithfield

Went last night but it was closed. OPEN please

9 Dec 2005 13:29

Ye Old Red Cow, Smithfield

Good little place but decor is a bit too cafe like to feel to comfortable. Loved the 'finger' !!!

9 Dec 2005 13:28

The Hand and Shears, Barbican

Nice place. with working fireplaces!! The Great undecorated! No frills.

9 Dec 2005 13:26

The Cross Keys, Covent Garden

Nice style. Beer was So-so interesting crowd before 7pm plenty of suits after.

8 Dec 2005 13:14

Kingsmeadow, Kingston upon Thames

Apart from the plastic 10/10 but i could be ridiculously biased!!

7 Dec 2005 15:34

The Bedford, Balham

It's all right.

7 Dec 2005 15:30

The John Snow, Soho

I like the 'semi door' ! OK pub no cask gear!

5 Dec 2005 16:55

The Argyll Arms, Oxford Circus

Shockingly poor service by staff who didn't know what they were doing and couldn't understand the words 'pint', 'one' or 'of'! Not their fault being foreign and looking for jobs but the management really should put more into training staff. The only one who was any good was the elder irish lady. Really was bad service. It's got wonderful decor especially downstairs didn't see the upstairs before but it's definitely a little out of keeping with the downstairs so the other reader was probably right. The Pride was nice, downstairs is 'splendid'. A bit smokey. SORT OUT THE SERVICE - IT SHOULD BE A FLAGSHIP!! ...so there!

5 Dec 2005 16:49

The Spread Eagle, Wandsworth

Aye! worth going to admire the interior. Can't remember how expensive it was but I was a few sheets to the wind. 7/10 for the decor but don't expect a rip roaring time!

2 Dec 2005 21:03

Penny Black, Leatherhead

Well, beggars can't be choosers. Shame about the Leatherhead Losers! Old post office.

2 Dec 2005 20:46

The Running Horse, Leatherhead

I'm glad it's still alive.

2 Dec 2005 20:44

The Porterhouse, Covent Garden

You must be having a laugh - the prices take the pesh! Did like the draft though but I'd rather cut my nob off than pay those prices for bottled beer!!!! Great design though

1 Dec 2005 13:06

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

Working mans club! Please. Decor is great.

1 Dec 2005 12:59

The Alexandra, Wimbledon

Want to really love it and the refurb is ok but the miserable staff with attitudes and the piss-taking price of crap food is too much to suffer. They make you feel like they're doing you a favour but letting you in! Beer in good nick though. A 5/10

29 Nov 2005 21:05

The Prince of Wales, Clapham

It was good. Rubbish exterior interesting nick nack interior easy to get served. Good stuff on the pumps too. small.

29 Nov 2005 16:29

The Sun, Clapham

Nah!! Unless you're after a new bird.

29 Nov 2005 16:28

The Rose and Crown, Clapham

Very unpretentious for the area. Great frontage (the building - the bar maid was nice too though, and helpful). Ale in good nick. would pop in for another.

29 Nov 2005 16:27

The Frog and Forget-Me-Not, Clapham

Nothing special. OK for a lounge around in!

29 Nov 2005 16:25

The Alexandra, Clapham

Is it supposed to be Irish? Gerroutovit! It's alright. I tasted some old speckled hen smooth - nothing too special - didn't see any real ale. Shame. The bar staff were Polish I think...

29 Nov 2005 16:24

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

Wonderful place but badly kept ale.

29 Nov 2005 16:17

The Salisbury, Leicester Square

Hey Hey Hey. This is a nice place. gets busy as you would expect.

29 Nov 2005 16:15

The Silver Cross, Whitehall

It'd all right but not a pub of choice. Plenty of nice pictures on the walls. 5/10

29 Nov 2005 16:13

The Ship and Shovell, Charing Cross

Rather tastey beer on the pumps. Food, that was on the pumps too. Badgers - nice. Enough mirrors and great location. I agree about the temperature.

29 Nov 2005 16:11

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

This was marvellous!! Some nice guest Ales, cool decor, odd looking building. Every pint I've had in here has been top notch! Loved it, will take foreign visitors!

29 Nov 2005 16:07

The George, Temple

I'd love this pub to be a wonderful old historical place where you can soak up the atmos and imagine bar wenches from Hammer Horror Films but you just know that it's rubbish inside and served some bad quality ale which I didn't expect. Only go if you're a tourist.

29 Nov 2005 16:05

The Old Bank of England, Fleet Street

Yep - Very nice. Looks classy but not in a Bob Hoskins kind of way! Would definitely go back.

29 Nov 2005 15:59

The Hoop and Toy, South Kensington

Rubbish Ale but fairly friendly staff - the food...not for me - bland!

29 Nov 2005 15:56

The Zetland Arms, South Kensington

nice pub, nice mirrors nice ale. Slow service but never had a bad ale in there.

29 Nov 2005 15:55

The Kings Head, Tooting

I agree with the comment about the Football. It should be on when there's a game on...nuff said. Actually not because this could be a brilliant pub. The Victorian decor is stunning, it's roomy and you can get a seat usually, there's an unobtrusive pool table, it has decent capacity for food and serves some decent real ales. However, the barstaff never smile and aren't very welcoming, the food is average, food service confused and the ale has never tasted especially well kept. Who's running the show!!!?? Sort it..!

29 Nov 2005 15:51

The Rose and Crown, Tooting Bec

The bar with the footie is a bit boycey but OK but the real delight are the Karaoke evenings at the weekend. Marvellous - you'll be surprised at what you see - professional level yodelling, spoon playing, opera singers, the obligatory Elvis - great stuff. A decent local.

29 Nov 2005 15:43

The Wheatsheaf, Tooting Bec

A bit dodgy and rude staff but I often see people having a bit of a laugh in there. Rough around the edges but not as terrible as it looks.

29 Nov 2005 15:39

The Hope, Wandsworth Common

It's changed for the better but the decent beer selection and real ale nights aren't enough to take the taste of watching Wimbledon get relegated in there all those years ago out of my system. Come on the AFC. Crowd is .. what you might expect in Wandsworth Common. Food is ok but overpriced and didn't rate the roast. Go for the ale nothing else.

29 Nov 2005 15:35

The Sutton Arms, Barbican

Went on a Saturday night. I didn't mind that we were the only people in the pub. Perhaps 6pm is too early for some! It got a pleasant crowd though and decent beer. It's in a great area too. I suspect a different vibe in the week though!

29 Nov 2005 15:30

The George, London Bridge

Beautiful outside. Quality first room but surely they could do something better with the rest of the place. Suddenly the atmosphere disappears as you walk through the place. Heard they served leather food but couldn't vouch for that! I did rather enjoy the GEorge's own Ale and will definitely keep going back for more. It's not half as decent as it could be.

29 Nov 2005 15:27

The Market Porter, Borough

I've tried something new each time I've been here and every pint was in perfect condition. Nice bar area but the bit out the back is a bit pants. Staff have always been friendly and helpful. Not really a relaxing pub but with 10+ ales, stouts, porters, milds,IPAs etc etc blah blah on handpump I wish there were more like this around. Not easy to bag a seat mind!
