The Dorset Arms, Withyham Hartfield

Lovely old pub, interesting interior. Had a very nice Sunday lunch, generous portions, and delicious hand-cut beef still nicely pink in the centre. One of us had the halibut, which was delicious and beautifully presented. Extremely pleasant staff and efficient service. Will definitely be back, and would certainly recommend.

Welcome Stranger, Crowborough

I understand it used to be known as "The Welcome Strangler". It isn't too bad - a bit brightly lit, and the decor leaves a bit to be desired, but pleasant service and a decent pint of Master Brew.

Wheatsheaf, Crowborough

Fantastic pub with Harveys range in excellent condition. Nice little garden, and a cosy feel to the whole place. I have to agree with SassyB though. The service was surly and downright grumpy, which is a shame. No excuse for it - let's hope they pull their socks up in this area.

The Grape and Grain, Crystal Palace

Top marks. Fantastic range of ales, including a delicious Hog's Back Brewery number. Very customer focused - even to the point of creating a covered outside smoking area complete with wood-burning stove! Easily the best ale pub in this part of South London.

The Cambridge, Norwood

Still open. Still a bit crap.

Patricks Bar, Upper Norwood

Pretty decent Irish boozer/sports bar, best Guinness in Palace. Not bad at all.

The Salehurst Halt, Robertsbridge

The definitive pint of Harveys here. Absolute nectar. Great little pub, unspoilt yet spick and span. Friendly staff. Lovely to sit outside on a summer evening.

The Shipwrights Arms, London Bridge

Went here a couple of days ago. Excellent pint of Adnams, and friendly bar staff. Slightly shabby sort of pub, but I kind of like that. Would go again if in the area.

The White Hart, Crystal Palace

Previous posts about the disgraceful attitude of the staff and management are not over exaggerated. I have been in there only 3 times and on each occasion the service was surly, uninterested, and slow. And so much for the 20 minutes of drinking up time that us punters are legally allowed!! The rudeness as soon as time is called is something to be seen!
A pub can be made by great service. This has the potential to be a great pub. But I will never ever go back until attitudes of staff and management radically change. Oi! You are in the service industry! Act like it!!

The Waggon and Horses, Hartley Wintney

This pub is the definitive southern English village pub. Excellent pint of Courage Best, the best doorstep sandwiches served with proper chips, great atmosphere. I urge anyone in the area who has not been there to stop for a pint.

The Roundhouse, Battersea

Not too much here to fault. Good beers, good wine list, good service and good food. Only minor gripe is the portions are a bit small. Staff are great and very efficient.

Nice boozer!!

The Angel and Crown, Richmond

Agree. Its getting a bit scuzzy. Had some food in here the other day which was bog standard pre-frozen pub grub. Beer was OK. Bar staff were abrupt to the point of rudeness. There are better places to go.

The Royal Albert, Crystal Palace

Quite like it in here. It's excellent for a quiet mid-week pint or two whilst reading the paper. Bernie is an affable bloke, and keeps the beer always in good nick, and not too expensive. The Sunday roasts are good, and a bargain, but get in quick as they always sell out!!

Agree with 'terenced' about the gents. It does pen and ink a bit.

Postal Order, Crystal Palace

Not as bad as you might think. A good range of real ales, in good condition.
Although the place smells of old mens trousers.

The Blue Bottle, Crystal Palace

Got turned away for wearing a New York Knicks t-shirt - "sorry mate, no sportswear". This was at 4pm on a Sunday afternoon. I was not aware that a wave of basketball related violence was sweeping the country. This place is up its own arse, and the barstaff are about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike. Expensive too.

The White Hart, Crystal Palace

Definitely an improvement on the old O'Neills. Good real ales and quality lagers (Kirin, Amstel, Staropramen)and some interesting Belgian numbers. Can be difficult to get a seat sometimes, and not a great deal of space to stand at the bar because of its proximity to the window seats. Haven't eaten there yet but it looks good.
A thoroughly decent effort, if a little pricey.

The Grape and Grain, Crystal Palace

I would rather spend an evening slamming my genitalia in the kitchen drawer than spend an evening in here. Uninterested staff, crap music, obnoxious clientele, and an all-pervading reek of piss.

The Grapes, Limehouse

Oh yes. What a gem of a pub. A delicious pint of Marstons Pedigree, and a great view of the river from the little balcony at the back. One of Londons best and most historic boozers.

The Market Porter, Borough

Arguably the best ale pub in London. Brilliant.

6 Apr 2006 11:59

The Black Sheep Bar, Crystal Palace

Nice place, if a little like an airport lounge when its quiet. Great cocktails! Decent atmos on a weekend, and excellent service.

Puzzle Pub, Crystal Palace

I wonder if they have ever cleaned their beer lines. Easily the worst pint I have ever had. Utterly gopping. Quite a high moron count amongst the clientele. There are better places than this. Avoid.

Numidie, Crystal Palace

Try the cocktails - all invented by Hamed the barman. Easily the best bar in the area, and not overpriced. Wine list is spectacularly good, and a decent range of single malt whiskies. Atmosphere is funky and buzzing at weekends, and comfortably chilled and cosy on weekday nights. Nowhere near as smoky as it used to be thanks to the addition of an air filter. This place is a real gem!
