The Red Lion, Betchworth

Lovely pub along a quietish (for Surrey anyway!) lane. Food was fairly standard pub grub, nothing thrilling, but pleasant enough, and good, vheerful service. Three beers on, Doombar, Ringwood Best and Sussex Best, all seemed reasonably kept. Car park is out the back next to the cricket pitch, so I imagine it would be pleasant to down a pint or two watching some play in the summer. We visited midweek, early evening, and it was fairly quiet, but I imagine it is more popular at weekends in the summer. Well worth a visit if you are passing.

The Brushmakers Arms, Upham

Decent, unpretentious country pub. Honest food at an honest price, excellent beer. I just hope the horrible yahoos in their Aston Martins never descend on it.

The Crown, Chiddingfold

Good beer and food, but you pay for it!! Pleasant interior with eclectic selection of furniture, but can get quite busy. Great open fireplace, and if you are really lucky you might bag the seat next to it on a cold evening.

The Grove Tavern, Surbiton

definitely a summer pub, when it has a really happy feeling in is voluminous garden. We walked past it first, and it was the sound of peple enjoying themselves that drew us in. Not so sure about it in the winter though, as previous reviewers have pointed out it is not really a nooks and crannies sort of pub, the interior is quite open and the tables large. Ate here a lot this summer, and never had anything to complain about. Not really an ale pub, so I stuck with the Hoegarden, which I enjoy but was pricey. Wine is much better value here by the bottle, which most of the summer diners seem to take advantage of.

The Fleur De Lys, Dorchester on Thames

I stopped here for Sunday lunch last weekend. We were a bit late ordering, but the chef agreed that he could rustle up a couple of meals for us, and to keep it simple we both plumped for the roast pork. Everything was pretty good, and plenty of it. It does seem to be primarily a locals venue, but I like that, unpretentious. A couple of ales on tap, well kept it would seem. Dogs in the bar area, something I always appreciate seeing in rural areas. Overall I enjoyed the atmosphere. A real fire was lit in the afternoon, and as we let our lunch digest I was most reluctant to leave, But that could have been the particularly beautiful company I was in!!
