The Royal Oak, Westminster

A fair walk from any tube. No greeting from a barman in tee shirt and trainers. Beer is Youngs - not my favourite. It fills up with office workers on their way home, but is a soulless place. Kitchen was closed (on a weekday evening!) so no food. I cannot see any reason to return.

The Sussex Arms, Paddington

This pub has obviously had a make-over and looks nothing like the photo above now. Popped in at lunchtime. Was served a cloudy and off pint which I sent back. Ordered some food, nearly 6 for a miserable dry sandwich. What must tourists think of "The English Pub"? Sad.

Hog's Head, Newbury

From the signange this venue looks like it caters for the football/lager crowd but inside it is a smart looking pub. Surprised and pleased to see West Berkshire beers on tap and my pint was very good. Staff were pleasant enough although they need better training and some decent management. Food is mediocre but a nice canal-side location and would go again if only for the beer.

The Coach and Horses, Donnington

The Coach & Horses at Donnington, Newbury is most definately open and specialises in Thai food. I will be visiting soon for a meal and will report.

The Lock Stock and Barrel, Newbury

2nd visit.

This pub now has a reputation amongst local residents for off-hand staff and sky-high prices. I ate here 2 weeks ago - food mediocre and outrageous prices for soft drinks.

A shame - nice location but ignorant management.

The Furze Bush, Ball Hill

This is a family friendly pub with a lovely garden out front and a children's play area tucked round the back.

The food would not win any awards from me, but everytime I have eaten there it has been acceptable.

A place to take the kids for a treat - especially on a nice summer's day.

Waiting staff very pleasant - but the woman running the bar could smile a bit more.

The Queens Head, Hawkedon

Very pretty pub with real ale and good food. The homemade pizzas are superb and the best value of the food. Lovely log fires in winter and dog friendly. Pleasant landlord, but he is not shy on prices!

Overall I would recommend highly.

The Plough, Ashmansworth

Sadly, this lovely pub has now closed.

The Rising Sun, Stockcross

A simple, traditional pub with proper beer and dog friendly. Food is ok too.

Garden could be prettier and better thought out.

A nice change from the Newbury town pubs.

Old Waggon & Horses, Newbury

The Canal Bar (part of this pub) could be so nice but is run down with broken and dirty outside furniture. The only bitter is John Smiths - what a lack of imagination. Myself and Thai partner tried the food and were disappointed. My chicken was dry and tasteless. My partner's lamb dish looked and tasted old. A shame - the location is nice but whoever runs the place needs to up his game. The overall impression is "couldn't care".

The Lock Stock and Barrel, Newbury

Great location and beer good. Food is good but a bit pricey. Can get very crowded early evening. No football - Bliss!
