The Canonbury, Canonbury Place

just another middle class pub that specialises in overpriced average (or below average for my overcooked burger on a burnt roll with cold chips, 12.99). yawn... what's wrong with proper pubs???

nice beer garden though.

The Cat's Back, Wandsworth

looks good, but not authentically eccentic (like a poor mans POW in Clapham Old Town). I liked it when I first moved to the area. nice beer, decent pies, dogs, fireplace, football, but one day I went in to watch the a Lions rugby game and there was a girl in there dancing around listening to jazz, lost in the moment. i've only been back a couple of times. the image has ruined the pub for me.

The Dukes Head, Putney

I remember my first 2.50 pint back when I was a student in South Ken and now I will remember the Dukes Head for being the first 4 pint of normal beer (Kronenbourg).

It's a beautiful looking pub though, but not very well renovated. To be avoided on a Sunday unless you like the smell of peoples dinner permeating.

Actually, given that you can get great beer at numerous pubs in Putney, especially Youngs, probably best avoided completely.

The Telegraph , Putney Heath

My girlfriend and I went here on a Sunday having seen it while bicycling in the area. What a dissapointment. It's the sort of place your granny thinks is lovely, but then she doesn't have to queue at the bar, pay the bill or taste much of the food.

The Golden Lion, Putney Bridge

A proper pub. Proper people (ie, not beautiful/cool people) drink here and you can have a beer and a yarn with anyone. Nice beer garden.

I havn't been late in the evening so can't comment on the suggestion that the beautiful/cool people come here later.

Walkabout, Putney

Walkies have have their uses. Without them all the other pubs would be full of Aussies 'travelling' in and 'discovering' Europe.

Prince Of Wales, Putney

I it's the best pub near the tube station, which doesn't say all that much. The beer is well looked after, but a guest pint every now again would be nice.

It's a curious mix of people. Outside tends to be more rough and ready, inside hosts people who row (in a boat) and their parents.

Anyway, have a scotch egg, a pint of Black Sheep and enjoy it for what it is.

The Queen Adelaide, Wandsworth

Just another Youngs pub that has been done up. Food is ok, but way overpriced. 8 for a salad, 10 for a burger if memory serves me.

Good if you have kids, in fact on a Sunday you look out of place if you don't have kids with you.

The Hop Pole, Wandsworth

I like this pub, it's just a genuine boozer where there is a lack of them in Putney. I wouldn't take my mother there as I'm not she'd approve of the old bloke sitting at the end of the bar who managed to get the F word into pretty much every sentence he loudly uttered, but the Thai food smelt good and the Spitfire was good (3.25 a pint). Lot's of TV's for sport.

The Cat's Back, Wandsworth

A decent old pub surrounded by grim modern flats. I'm not sure how authentic the stuff in there is. It's got the look of a pub that was recentely decorated to look old and quirky, but it's a decent friendly pub with good beer and usually a couple of dogs running about or lying in front of the fire. It can be a little pretentious, or rather some of the clientelle can be, but that's not always a bad thing.

The Spotted Horse, Putney

Doesn't do much for me. There was something missing. It think maybe they've tried to hard to make it fancy and it doesn't feel like a pub anymore, but then they have pub quizes. I think they need to decide if it's a pub or a bar and concentrate on that.

4 a pint too.

The Coat and Badge, Putney

Not bad, a bit 'la di da' for me, but good to see Doom Bar on. Reasonable price too. I'd go there again with my girlfriend, but not with the boys.

The Eagle Ale House, Clapham

A great pub. Especially because to get there you have to walk past all those crappy places on Northcote Road (if you coming from Clapham Junction). Good beer, great garden, decent people, nice bar staff.

They recently put a massive TV in front of the fireplace which is a bit of shame, but still the best pub in the area by miles.

They charge for using cards in there, so bring cash.

Devonshire, Balham

Pretty dull, chrome and mirrors bar. Way overpriced though. I paid 48 for 8 drinks yesterday (2 wines, 2 Guiness, 4 large spirits with mixer). Bar staff were good though.

There must be better and cheaper pubs in the area.

The Royal Oak, Clapham North

By far the best pub in the area, The Guinness is great, the staff are really good; it's got a great atmosphere. Perhaps the TV could spend more time off.

On Sunday's it's rammed with people eating their Sunday roast which smells fantastic, but isn't great if you just want a few beers.

A great pub though.

The Railway, Clapham North

I usually drink in the Royal Oak, but my girlfriend and I went to check out The Railway as it looks good through the window.

The bar staff were fine. I was given a pint of Guinness that was off, the barman acknowledged that something has happened to the gas when he poured it and went to replace it.

The Landlord on the other hand started arguing with me about it. Despite trying to explain about the gas he kept interrupting me. He only stopped when I walked away and sat down.

To be fair, it was a good pint when replaced, but I won't reward this kind of attitude with my custom.

The Falcon, Clapham Junction

I must have come here on a bad day. I thought the pub looked fantastic, but was pretty average when I had a drink in there. The Guinness was pretty good though so someone knows what they are doing.

The Bobbin, Clapham

A lovely pub, good service, nice Guinness and away from all the trendy people who are all in The Sun.

7 Mar 2008 14:30

The Goat, Battersea

I've never eaten in The Goat, so can't comment on the poor reviews already made about that, but I love the pub for drinking in. Good beers, decent service, great decor and atmosphere even when not too many people in there. It can be a bit hard getting a table and there's not much room for standing though. A winters Sunday afternoon passes much quicker here than in most pubs.

The Frog and Forget-Me-Not, Clapham

I used to love this pub ten years ago, but it seems to have changed in character. It still looks the same, but just doesn't feel right now.

7 Mar 2008 14:20

The Bierodrome, Clapham

There is one of the pubs that doesn't attract the 'cool' people of Clapham for some reason and is much better for it. Most of the staff know their beers and provide good advice if you want it. It's not cheap, but well worth having a few warm up beers here.
