The Montague Arms, New Cross

Pleased to say the Montague has reopened :) They've done a good job of recreating the old atmosphere (unfortunately all the old bric a brac was sold off), with lots of quirky items, although with a less cluttered feel than before and it is also much cleaner than I remember. A good selection of ales including delicious Mauldons Blackberry Porter were on great form and the stage area looks the same as I remember it. Basically its the Monty I used to love, just with a few less curios, a bit more space and a lot cleaner, cant wait to go back :)

The Red Lion, Moorgate

Popped in for a couple on Sunday afternoon. Had well kept pints of Truman's Runner and Hackney Best. Good to see a chain pub supporting local microbreweries! Nice traditional and cosy interior and clean toilets. Could have lived without the TV showing football, especially as there was music playing as well. Worth popping in for a couple if you're in the area.

The Mortimer Arms, Bloomsbury

From the outside this pub looks very promising, nice decor inside and out and an array of handpumps. Unfortunately when I went none of the ales were on so I had to have an extra-cold Guinness. There were 6 of us round the table and the big screen was turned up so loud having a group conversation was very difficult. After a while the bar staff turned off the screen and put on some dance music that was even louder and more annoying than the TV had been.
This could be a great pub but unless there's changes I see no reason to go back.

The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch

Lovely little unspoilt pub, as previous posters have commented it feels almost like sitting in someone's front room. My Brewer's Gold and ESB were both on fine form and the service was quick and friendly.

Unfortunately the clientele on the (Thursday) night we went seemed to consist mostly of baying Shoreditch media-darlings, rather than the Wenlocky mixture of locals and ale-tourists I was expecting. The loud piped music (why??) wasn't helping either, my wife and I had to shout at each other rather than talk, so we ended up leaving after 2 pints. Lovely pub, shame about the clientele and the music.

The George, Temple

Although downstairs is one room, the back part with the fire place has the feel of a separate snug. Nice interior and my Hog's Back Englan'd Glory was in fine form, most people around us did seem to be eating and of course during the week this place will be filled with braying suits and tourists so probably not somewhere I'd rush back to. Great pub, shame about the location!

The Mitre, Paddington

Trequites - why would you want them to rip out original features and replace them with bland modern versions??? I thought the interior of this pub was great and my Bombardier was on fine form. I can't say what it's like in the evening because I only spent an hour or so in there in the afternoon but I'd certainly go back if I was in the area. And it had Erdinger on tap for the wife, which is always a plus.

The White Hart, Whitechapel

Great atmospheric pub interior, my Spitfire and London Pride were both in fine condition. This would have rated a 9 but I have to take off a point for having three unused handpumps in each bank of 5 - a selection of guest ales from some of the smaller breweries would make this place near perfect! Still I'll definately pop in again next time I'm in the Brick Lane area.

The Heart and Hand, Brighton

When I visit Brighton with my wife the Heart and Hand is usually our first stop for a pint. I love this little boozer, we were there on Saturday and the Harveys Best and Sharp's Doombar were both in fine form, as was the wife's Leffe. I've always found the staff here to be friendly and the vintage jukebox is ace. The Evening Star may have a much better ale selection but the H & H is still my favourite Brighton boozer.

The Jolly Gardeners, Vauxhall

I can only assume James32 works in a rival pub nearby, because I am black and I found the manager and staff perfectly friendly. Great range of perfectly kept German beers, served in their correct glasses (Wetherspoon take note!), unfortunately I'd eaten before I went because the Currywurst looked and smelled great - next time! I do hope this bold venture succeeds, it was rather quiet for a Saturday night. I shall certainly be going back!

Waxy O'Connors, Piccadilly

The only pub I have ever been in where I've been asked to cover my tattoo!! Plastic tourist trap with no ale, would have left anyway, nothing to recommend this place at all!

24 Apr 2008 11:30

The Central Bar, Shepherds Bush

Popped in for a quick pint before seeing Saxon at the Empire, confronted with at least half a dozen guest ales, as well as the usuals like Abbot! I'll definately be coming back to make a night of it and drink my way down the bar, I can only assume the harsh comments come from non-ale lovers. Service polite, bogs clean, massive choice of ale, what more do you want?

The Marlborough Head, Marble Arch

Started going back to the metal nights on Saturdays now they have real ale (and a Cask Marque) in the upstairs bar. I've always found the service friendly, then again I go to pubs to DRINK, not eat. If I want food and waiter service I go to a RESTAURANT - there is a difference, not that you'd know it from some of the reviews on this site. Anywhere I can go and drink real ale and listen to real metal gets 2 horns up from me!!

The Greenwich Union, Greenwich

Some superb beers from the Meantime Brewery and Flying Dog from the US. Unfortunately the staff decided to call time well before 11 and didnt seem to understand why I wouldn't down my pint of 7% IPA in one and leave them to whatever business was so much more important than keeping the pub open til it's stated closing time! Next time I'm in Greenwich I'll stick to the Youngs Pub next door or the Spanish Galleon (Shepherd Neame) in town. Shame, because those beers do rule.

The Hope and Anchor, Camden

I popped in for a quick pint before going to a gig at the Purple Turtle, the barmaid was nice and friendly and my pint of Courage Best was fine. I didnt have to use the loo so I can't comment on them. I'd definately go back for a few pints before a gig.

The Market Porter, Borough

Now I know why this pub is so popular, a great range of ales, including a couple I'd never even heard of, all in absolute top condition. The Blakemere Cheyenne was one of the best pints I've ever had. Nice unspoilt traditional interior, the only thing I'd change is the piped (radio) music - there's no need for it. Easily one of the best pubs I've been to.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

My favourite pub, full stop. There is nothing I'd change about the Wenlock, for an ale lover (who's married to a kriek and cider lover!) it is paradise - 10/10.

4 Sep 2006 16:38

The Bavarian Beerhouse, Shoreditch

Great place, yes it's a bit pricey but the beer is imported for Germany and there's plenty of pubs in London charging similar prices for crap like Stella. My currywurst was delicious, as good as any I've had in Germany and the staff were really friendly. I'd definately go back!

4 Sep 2006 16:26

The Hobgoblin, New Cross

One of the most disgusting pints of ale I've ever had, well, actually I didn't finish it. I left after a few sips and hopped on the bus to the Shakespeare's Head in Holborn. If it was run by people who cared and knew how to look after ale, this could be the best (only decent) pub in New Cross. As it is, my "local" will contiune to be a half hour bus ride away!

25 Jul 2006 16:44

The North Pole, Greenwich

Stopped off for a quick pint with my wife on one of the hottest days of the year so far, the air conditioning was turned up full, just what I needed, as was a few nice cold pints of Staropramen. We left when they started clearing a dance area and setting decks up. Not somewhere I'd come at night or in winter, there's no ale on tap and it's expensive, but good for a few cold ones on a hot summer's day. Nice friendly barmaid too, which always helps

25 Jul 2006 16:39

The Gipsy Moth, Greenwich

Popped in for a quick pint during the day on a rare visit to Greenwich, the pub seemed quiet and there was real ale on tap. Unfortunately we waited 10 minutes to get served while all 3 bar staff arsed around making a round of cocktails for the same customer, got fed up and left. Next time I'm in Greenwich I'll stick to the Spanish Galleon!

25 Jul 2006 16:33

The Spanish Galleon, Greenwich

No complaints here, the Bishops Finger was in fine condition, even though it was one of the hottest days of the year. Very friendly (and cute) girl behind the bar, who knew what she was serving, I thought I'd tried all the Shepheard Neame ales, but I was wrong. If I lived in Greenwich I could see this being my local

25 Jul 2006 16:22

The Angel, Soho

Great pub, lots of different little rooms, something you don't see enough these days. Plenty of character and being a Sam Smiths the ale was dirt cheap, but in perfect nick. I'd definately go again.

3 Jan 2006 17:26

The Tipperary, Fleet Street

Didn't like this place at all, my Abbot was totally bland and there was a depressing atmosphere all round. I was on a crawl, wish I'd skipped this one!

3 Jan 2006 17:23

The Old Bell, Fleet Street

The interior, while cosy, was not as old-style as the outside lead me to believe it would.Still a nice cosy boozer; perfect pints of Timothy Taylor's Landlord and the fit as fukk barmaids made up for all the suits!

3 Jan 2006 17:20

The Crown and Sugarloaf, Bride's Lane

Lovely cosy unspoilt Victorian (?) pub, with a real open fire. A Sam Smiths pub so the beer is dirt cheap and my Old Brewery Bitter was in perfect condition. Probably full of City tossers normally, I went between Xmas and New Year when it was pretty empty. Recommended!

3 Jan 2006 17:16

Ice Wharf, Camden

Ok to come for a couple of pints before a gig in Camden but it's one of the more soulless of Wetherspoon's pubs and that is saying something!

28 Nov 2005 17:38

The Sir John Oldcastle, Farringdon

Been here twice and while the range and quality of beers was good, both times it was absolutely freezing. The airconditioning was turned up so high it practically blew the froth off my pint, pretty stupid considering the whole pub is non-smoking! Even if it wasn't, I'd rather breathe in smoke than sit there shivering. Didnt stay long and wont be back

28 Nov 2005 17:34

The Devonshire Arms, Camden

I am far from a goth (mixed race metalhead with a blue denim patch jacket) but I've never had any hassle getting in the Dev! It's great getting pissed without being surrounded by turds in suits or football shirts, my only complaint is the lack of real ale, at least the snakebite is decent though. Somewhere to you can go for a late drink without having to pay to get in, being ripped off at the bar or being surrounded by trendy shitestains - hurrah for the Dev!!

22 Sep 2005 15:24

The Shakespeare's Head, Holborn

One of the few Wetherspoons in London that actually feels like a pub, rather than a restaurant that serves beer! Had 4 great guest ales, as well as the Wetherspon usuals when we went. Definately worth a visit!
