The Florence Arms, Southsea

Very pleasantly surprised by the Flo, visiting after 25 years since our student days in Southsea. 4 excellent ales, menu looked good, and very friendly with a great, proper, pub atmosphere on a Saturday night.
Band started at 9 (The Renegade Dogs - lively folk type stuff) and were excellent too.

Crosskeys, Wallingford

Nice place for a couple of drinks, good atmosphere, pity I'm not that keen on Brakspear's beers generally!

The Coach and Horses, Wallingford

Nice trad pub will be much improved now the smoking laws are in place! Always liked it, but was very smoky. Well kept beer, & good location.

The Sun Hotel, Coniston

Agree with previous comment - best pub in Coniston. Very welcoming, superb food (the steak & kidney pie with suet pastry was fabulous), & great range of regularly changing ales. A proper cosy pub, with a totally different feel to the hotel.

The Black Bull Hotel, Coniston

A great place to drink but only a good place to eat. Nothing wrong as such, just not brilliant & quite pricey. Fab spot to sit outside & drink Bluebird though.

The White Horse Inn, Priors Dean

One of my favourite pubs in the world, with a truly unique atmosphere even after renovation. No Name beer is possibly the nicest pint too! Glad its hidden away so only connoisseurs can find it! The only trouble is that we always aim to pop in for a couple of lunchtime pints & end up staying for hours...

The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale

It might be basic, but it is one of the best pubs anywhere concentrating only on what is really important - beer & atmosphere!!!

The Screes Inn, Nether Wasdale

Great pub. Well kept ales & lots of choice of malt whisky. Not much more to add to other users comments!

The Kirkstile Inn, Loweswater

Superb. Great location overlooking the fells & views of Crummock water. Very high quality food is quite good value - would be thought of as cheap-average prices if it was Surrey! Changing beers brewed on the premises (Melbreak Bitter particularly good) or from local area (e.g. Coniston Bluebird). Shouldn't really recommend it - its already always busy!

The King William IV, Hailey

Fabulous location, a bit pricey (especially the starters) but good food & ale. One for the summer!

The Queens Head, Crowmarsh Gifford

Whilst mostly a restaurant, the small bar area serves excellent beer (as seems normal in a Fullers pub) & the bar menu Thai food is superb value (5-6 for a decent sized meal). Garden very nice.

The Bell Inn, Crowmarsh Gifford

A Hungry Horse so I guess you know what you're getting! Average, but useful for families.

The Barley Mow, Clifton Hampden

Better than expected for a chain pub, with decent beer & good quality food served late. Very nice garden, & next to campsite (fairly basic facilities) & river.

The Lion, Culham

Nice spot to sit outside after a day on the river.

Artillery Arms, Milton

Fabulous, little changed Pompey corner pub, in the residential back streets. Good garden, proper pub atmosphere &, most importantly, absolutely spot-on beers. How a town pub should be.

The Fifth Hants Volunteer Arms, Southsea

Possibly the best kept beer in the world.

The Ship Inn Hotel, Porlock

The bar is excellent, nice old room, with a proper welcoming, local atmosphere & excellent beer. A bit smoky.
The food was fine, but a little bland & quite pricy, though I may have simply made the wrong choice (pie of the day was a little "watery").
Patio & beer garden hard to tear yourself away from on a sunny afternoon though...

Overall a very good pub.

Fleece Inn, Dolphinholme

Excellent country pub with good food & a superbly kept range of ales. Didn't have a problem with smoke on our visit, even though we sat in the bar to eat which is very much a "local" feeling area. Friendly landlord & staff too.

The Queens Arms, Bleadon

Surprised at the low vote so far, as this used to be an excellent old pub in a nice spot, serving quality ale direct from the barrel & with good, though not extensive, food. Maybe its changed as I would give it an 8 on memory, but not been for about 3 years.

The Rowbarge Hotel, St Johns

Good pub for eating now, restaurant has a good menu, not cheap but not ridiculous. London Pride was well kept & wine list OK if pricey for a pub. Outside area looks like a great summer spot for a pint.

The Golden Rule, Ambleside

Agree with all below, by far the best pub in Ambleside. Funny how most of us "visitors" always prefer a good old local's pub rather than the formulaic tourist pubs offered to us.

The Stickle Barn Tavern, Great Langdale

Good ale, reasonable food & great location.

5 Apr 2006 14:57

The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale

One of the great walker's & climber's pubs, though maybe not quite as lively as it used to be. Don't go for the fairly basic food, go for the beer & the atmosphere on a busy night.
The only pub I have been in where a naked bloke who danced on a table, & promptly broke it & a pile of glasses, was not thrown out just handed a broom to sweep up the glass with.

5 Apr 2006 14:55

The Red Lion, Pall Mall

Proper old London pub, with a good atmosphere & a sense of history. Well kept Adnams the only real ale normally, but perfect for after work or lunchtime pint. The upstairs is normally quiet & a bit like sitting in your grandmother's lounge. Full climbing rope & harness recommended if visiting the gents after more than a few pints...

5 Apr 2006 14:52

The Crown, Horsell

Proper friendly local, with a fantastic choice of well kept real ale. Occasional beer festivals are great too, with a few barrels kept in the lock up garage outside! One for the session rather than to impress a new girl or take the parents for a nice meal to. Which is a good thing - there are too many foody pubs in Slurrey!

5 Apr 2006 14:49

The Crown Inn, Knaphill

Erm, I would like to disagree, but not sure I can. Basic. Fine as a pub crawl destination.

5 Apr 2006 14:44

The Garibaldi, Knaphill

Recently changed hands & name back to Garibali. Beer still OK, not much changed decor wise, but menu sadly no longer has the same choice, especially the Mexican choices which have gone. A shame, as this was the main reason I went. Staff friendly.

5 Apr 2006 14:42

The Clachaig Inn, Clachaig

Wins on atmosphere, location & number of ales for the Highlands. Bands normally good too, or at least entertaining! Loses on average food & the slight feeling that you're merely being "processed" for profit rather than welcomed. Still one of THE classic pubs in the country, on the right night.

5 Apr 2006 14:39

The Old Inn, Carbost

Best location, good beer & great nosh. Best pub on Skye for an evening after a day on the Cuillin. The mountain ridge that is, not the beer!
