The Parade Bar, Bath University

Food is terrible. You can tell its run by- euck- Gardener and Merchant. School dinners again, yummmmm. Plug bar is better but unfortunately more smoky at the moment. Not actually expensive, especially the offers but not cheap enough for a Uni. Get on the orange bus!!

The Volunteer Riflemans Arms, Bath

Lovely. try the very strong black rat cider, or the Weymouth bitter they usually have on. Yes you cant swing a cat- congratualtions on your observational skills. Keeps going into the wee small hours, and you can sit outside and flaunt bath's no-drinks-outside policy (which i must say is policed very liberally). Never tried the food at lunchtime but its worth a go.

4 Sep 2006 23:40

The Trinity, Bath

Nothing special, right in the centre but doesnt make the most of it. Trundle on down to Hobgoblin and have a proper drink.

4 Sep 2006 23:37

St James Wine Vaults, Bath

Didnt spend much time here, but it looked a very nice place to scoialise and was busy as we couldnt get a table. Good selection of spirits and wine- dont know about ales and lager but i guess theyre well stocked too.

4 Sep 2006 23:35

St Christophers, Bath

Slightly trendy in a tacky way, but despite that its usually a good bet for interesting conversation- its main trade is as the city centres only youth hostel. Food looks good though ive never tried it, and usually good offers on.

4 Sep 2006 23:33

The Cork, Bath

And now the Cork and Bottle with standard Eldridge Pope lurid red branding.

4 Sep 2006 23:31

The Saracens Head, Bath

Not great. tries to make a big deal out of being rather old and to be honest its just a bit naff. Chain pub very obvious from menus and blackboards. Much better in area, such as Pig and Fiddle or Green Tree

4 Sep 2006 23:30

The Salamander, Bath

Bath Ales, so top notch beers and good attention to detail in the pub itself. Excellent food downstairs at lunchtime- the FT fish and chips are phenomenal. Food in restaurat upstairs was good too, but not the best in bath. Chef actually walked out when we were eating, which was quite funny- we already had our mains so didnt really care if there was no more food =)

4 Sep 2006 23:27

The Rummer, Bath

Brilliant, upstairs is the killer with one room of long big wooden tables and another overlooking the weir with sofas and soft chairs and cupboards and drawers and its just like home but 10 times posher! Legend.

4 Sep 2006 23:15

The Royal Oak, Bath

Lots of beer- discounts for CAMRA members which to be honest just makes you feel like youre being ripped off if youre not a member but oh well. Good books in the corner and they have samplers of all the beers to try if you want. Sunday roasts at the moment but more food should be coming soon. Nicely done-up.

4 Sep 2006 23:11

The Roundhouse, Bath

Its gone, probably being turned into a sandwich bar. Not that it ever looked that inviting before- never anyone in there in the evening.

4 Sep 2006 23:08

The Rising Sun, Bath

Calls itself the friendliest pub in bath, but i wouldnt go that far- its nice but nothing special. Darts and skittles out back and a very rugby feel. Pultney arms up the road is a better bet, but this is better than the Boater opposite.

4 Sep 2006 23:07

Revolution, Bath

Its OK- lots of vodka, and is a big place for bath. Free pizza on monday nights :). Not actually that expensive compared as bath is always expensive unless youre initials (arent) JDW.

4 Sep 2006 23:05

The Raven, Bath

Fantastic- best food in town- try a cold-cut pie salad- excellent location, really nicely decorated and fine ales and cider on tap. Staff have always been very friendly to us, the chef comes out upstairs and chats to the customers etc...by the way there IS an upstairs and its non-smoking so a plus there, the staircase is hidden away at the right end of the building.

4 Sep 2006 23:02

The Rat and Parrot, Bath

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
Then you may survive the Rat and Parrot.

4 Sep 2006 22:58

The Pulteney Arms, Bath

Real nice place, always plenty of independent ales on tap and good food. Nice staff as well and TVs for the all important rugby, and well located just out of the centre off Great Pultney Street.

4 Sep 2006 22:55

Porter, Bath

Attached to moles Club next door, with open-mike nights on monday and music or comedy most others. Bellringer on tap, but as with moles avoid the mcEwans and kronenbourg lager, either they never clean those pipes or their supplier sells them five year out of date stuff. Also pool tables downstairs and good veggie food abounds which is always a nice change!

4 Sep 2006 22:51

The Pig and Fiddle, Bath

Really good lunchtime food (wild boar burger? kangaroo anyone?), nice ales and ciders, good location, football and rugby usually on and a nice outside heated beer 'garden' to sit in when its not raining. Best sports pub in bath- rugby shirts on the wall, photos from baths euro cup win etc excellent.

3 Aug 2006 22:35

The Park Tavern, Bath

Nice if usually quiet (at least in the evening) foody pub on victoria park. Good pool table and interesting memorabilia on the walls, lots of bottles of beer including half-strength lager...why not just have a lemonade?

3 Aug 2006 22:32

The Old Green Tree, Bath

Well nice little place, never ever got a seat in here but who cares? Many a fine ale but a tad smokey in the evneings, but that shouldnt be a problem for much longer. never tried the food due to said seating problem! The Sausage Shop is nearby though and they do excellent takeaway Bangers and Mash in a box for 3!!!

3 Aug 2006 22:28

The New Westhall Inn, Bath

Wadworths as per the New Inn further down the street- I do like Wadworth Inns theyre always so friendly! Do they make the landlords/ladys take a friendlyness test? This place is packed full of 1950s style action, be it snooker, darts, bingo, skittles or raffles- which we managed to win four prizes on with one line of tickets which annoyed the old ladies a bit!
Sunday lunch is cheap (6ish if i rmember correct) but by bookings only.

3 Aug 2006 22:21

The New Inn, Bath

Very good- real friendly with the best pub dog ive ever met! Wadworth so good selection of theyre Henrys an IPAs and specials on. Sandwiches and stuff at lunchtime so good for a quick bite, perhaps the best traditional-style pub (just) in the city centre.

3 Aug 2006 22:18

The Bath Brew House, Bath

Just OK. Layout has changed for the better with the removal of the pool table from front room since its conversion to Metropolitan. Dont like the new signs though, as per all Eldridge pope pubs. Why change the name from something significant (old Green Park Station, with trains to the midlands is just over the road) to something meaningless? So you can make a cheap and tacky joke with the sign?!?

3 Aug 2006 22:15

The Marlborough Tavern, Bath

This place is swell. Real friendly, lovely location, and resident dogs. And a BIG aerial map of bath on the wall, what more could you want?

3 Aug 2006 22:11

The Livingstone, Bath

Strange layout on the inside, good old jukebox on the right hand side. Quite scary for many a reason, very much a 'locals' pub despite being right in the middle of the main student high street. However have had some good fun here but it definitely involves alot of alcohol! They have guiness (cant remember anything else about the drinks).

3 Aug 2006 22:09

The Litten Tree, Bath

1 big loud crowded open room. Drinks not even that cheap. Dont order the food, takes ages, know someone who works here and the kitchen staff havent got a clue.

3 Aug 2006 22:07

The Lamb and Lion, Bath

Compared to 'spoons, its not as cheap nor as quality but you will get served in under 20 minutes! The only real 'chav' pub in Bath, can make an interesting change from all the much better locations very nearby!

1 Aug 2006 11:14

The Kings Arms, Bath

Very- umm- rock'n'roll pub. Usually some sort of band playing, with lots of large tattoed biker types crammed into the narrow corridor/bar area. Courtyard area in the entrance passage so you can get away from the variable-quality racket inside. Amazingly has a few B&B style rooms across the courtyard- dont expect any sleep!

1 Aug 2006 11:12

The King of Wessex, Bath

Banned smoking early, which is a positive, as is the selection of drinks. However dont expect to get served on a Friday or Saturday night- it usually takes half an hour! OK on other nights though, but would stick to elsewhere as its all one big open plan, plain and boring and in a modern cinema complex opposite TGI Fridays.

1 Aug 2006 11:08

The Huntsman Inn, Bath

It's OK- very big, dancefloor upstairs, rooms to the rear and big pool hall in the cellar. usually a couple of ales- otter and courage. Has had a late licence since before everywhere did but thats no benefit now- go to the Coer de Lion or Volly's. Could do much better with the location- why block out the could-be-excellent views from the top floor?!?!

1 Aug 2006 11:04

The Hop Pole, Bath

This is a cross between a restaurant and a pub- the pub only does food at lunchtimes, with a good selection of sandwiches and light bites. The restaurant is to the rear, as well as the pub's beer garden. Bath Ales are one of my favourites so I can't fault the drinks, and they have alot of other bottled and tapped beers such as cherry, white and organic lager! Really nice atmosphere and well decorated, had lunch here once and ended up staying until the evening! One of the best in bath- probably tied with the Bell and Raven.

1 Aug 2006 11:01

The Hobgoblin, Bath

Probably the darkest pub in bath- at least downstairs in the cellar- which is good enough to scare off most annoying people to the Lamb and Lion nearby. Really good selection of mostly Hobgoblin ales, and pool tables upstairs. Many 'bespoke' people make this an interesting place to hang out.

1 Aug 2006 10:55

The Tram Shed, Bath

Well it's not a pub- they call it a Canteen which brings to memory awful school lunches, but its actually more of a cocktail bar-cum-pizzaria. Built in the old Bath Tram terminal, which is a crying shame- at least put a decent pub there instead of this overpriced hole. Only worth it on (very rare) 2-for-1 nights when you can verify what a glowing green cocktail tastes like.

1 Aug 2006 10:51

The Griffin Inn, Bath

This place is a bit scary. OK, not as scary as the Kings Arms further down the road, but scary in the old people getting drunk at ten o'clock on a saturday night kind of way! Anyway everyone seemed pretty friendly but nothing compared to the New Inn a (long) stones throw away.

1 Aug 2006 10:48

The Green Park Tavern, Bath

Very smart considering its a few minutes from the town centre. Lots of things on tap including good cider, and usually offers on bottles and spirits. So big that I didnt even realise there was a beer garden and ive been about 10 times- oops! Also acoustic nights, karaoke (hmmm....) and quiz nights!

1 Aug 2006 10:44

The Grapes, Bath

Never sampled the food, but it looks too cheap to be any good. Disappointingly normally only one proper beer on (Courage and occasionally a special Courage), and its really smoky at the moment but of course that will change soon. However it does have alot of character despite the cheap posters up, and is a good place to watch the football or rugby. Relatively cheap for Bath as well.

1 Aug 2006 10:40

The Garricks Head, Bath

Re-opened as a restaurant or gastropubthing- and an expensive one at that- rather than a proper pub. Seemingly all-new decor, although i'd never been in the old pub. Disappointed, as this could have been a real winner as a decent, large traditional oub in the centre of town.

Umm, and I don't think the King Billy is a pub- at least not in Bath!

1 Aug 2006 10:36

Flan O'Briens, Bath

The best 'Irish' pub in Bath! Well i suppose it only has O'Neils for company just up the road, but its nicely decorated and in a good location between the second shopping street. Occasionally has live music in the evenings and a good atmosphere when full (thus better than most places in the centre of town) so worth checking out.

1 Aug 2006 10:29

The Dark Horse, Bath

My memory of this place is a bit hazy, i remember sitting around a big round table with lots of happy people and a nice pint in my hand. Mmmmmmmmmm.

Is this a gay pub? or just gay friendly? or anti-gay?

9/10 for now!

13 Jul 2006 22:31

The Crystal Palace Tavern, Bath

Hmmm. I do wonder about this one.
+Nice food
-Expensive
+Nice location
-chain pub
+they let the manager choose the drinks though
-they only have blackthorn cider

overall- good for a lunchtime bite if someone else is paying, but i'd go to the VRA/Coeur de Lion if i was in the area in the evening.

13 Jul 2006 22:29

The Coeur de Lion, Bath

Its a small pub with a big heart! Well maybe. it's loos are a bit nicer than both the VRA/Vollys/Volunteer Riflemans arms and The green Tree which I think just scrapes it 'best tiny pub in centre of bath' award.

mothola, i will make a note to take a cuban flag with me on my next visit!
9/10

13 Jul 2006 22:26

The Chequers, Bath

very posh, but in a good way- seem to rmember whitewashed walls and some nice ales....Bath Gem maybe. Was very nearly our local, but got beaten to a house just down the road by 5 minutes!
Worth the stroll up Lansdown or Victoria park, oh the toilets are downstairs to the right of the bar, I couldnt see any signs (which doesnt mean there werent any, just that it was the 7th stop on a pub crawl and you know....) 8/10

13 Jul 2006 22:22

The Boat House, Bath

Well there are no locals because there are no locals- its located next to the Park & Ride, a river and the dual carriageway! Has good food, carvery on sundays but otherwise quite expensive. Apparently almost closed down as they left rotting food in the kitchen for weeks and the health and safety people came round. So for that ewwww factor, 3/10

13 Jul 2006 22:18

The Boater, Bath

Upstairs for old-man-pub style.
Downstairs for student style.
No idea what their beers like as I always seem to be lured into drinking one/two/ten of those interestingly flavoured shots.
Oh once I was there someone puked blood onto the mens loos infront of me! maybe he was a Bristol rugby fan?....5/10

13 Jul 2006 22:16

The Bell, Bath

Could be my favourite pub- ever! Come on a summer night when they have a band on and the courtyard open AND random open mike people playing in the annex behind and then get happy-drunk, will be one of the best nights of your life (ok no guarentees, but if it isnt youre a miserable sod!).

Any local ale you can ask for plus about 20 different bottles (Cherry Beer & westons organic AND Westons superstrong organic- green lables!). Veggie food- ask for pork scratchings to wind them up :)

Ask for the 8% bottle of beer. Its potent. Saw it advertised on their 'World Beer Guide' poster, seem to recollect that it changed name between me ordering it and drinking it, but at that percentage who's to know?!?!?
10/10

13 Jul 2006 22:06

The Bath Tap, Bath

It's a gay bar so it gets our vote, and its slightly cheaper than nearby DYMK(now renamed-shock horror 'The Cork and Bottle' hehe) so thats a bonus- althugh still quite expensive! Nicely done and plenty of quiz night things to keep you entertained...7/10

13 Jul 2006 22:00

The Barley, Bath

Lovely place to spend a few hours, nicely decorated inside, good Cider (stoford press if i do remember correct), and JENGA! They do what sounds like very nice food as well, were only in for a drink though will have to go back- maybe stroll down Great Pultney street for their beer & sandwich for 4(ish- cant remember quite for some reason) offer one lunchtime. 9/10.

13 Jul 2006 21:57

The Assembly Inn, Bath

Sometimes crowded but usually not as bad as the pubs/bars at the top of Milsom street. Pool tables a bonus for a pub so close to the centre. If it wasn't cheap it would be nothing special (sweaty+smoky+naff food) but its about 50m from the Circus on a nice street so 6/10 from me.

13 Jul 2006 21:52

All Bar One, Bath

Under 21s are banned so unfortunately will have to wait a bit to tick this one off our Great Bathonian Pubcrawl list! I can hardly wait...1/10 for being so pompus.

13 Jul 2006 21:46

The Alehouse, Bath

Very nicely located right in the centre, at the roundabout where they allow all the tour busses to idle noisily (grr!). Spend most of our time downstairs as its more 'active' in the evening, many drinks offers- very studently. Upstairs is much more relaxed (v. similar to the Boater in that respect).
Does food at lunchtimes, but its cheap in both price and quality. Try the greek cafe opposite instead.
On the drinks front, some ales (upstairs), lots of weird concoctions downstairs but disgusting as usual Stowells wine machine...overall 7/10
