Horse and Farrier Inn, Threlkeld

Brother just texted me, £4.10 for a pint of Jennings' Snecklifter.

Devonshire Arms, Ulverston

Really like the Dev, excellent range of well kept reasonably priced beers from far and near, friendly staff and great atmosphere. Deserves its CAMRA accolades. Only gurn is the fact that people sit around the bar when they are drinking which hinders us poor alcoholics in training from getting a beer quickly. Other than that, absolutely worth a visit.

The Cavendish Arms, Cartmel

Brother lives nearby. Went in for a beer after a walk, pint of Caledonian £3.90. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask. He paid it too.

The Golden Rule, Ambleside

Still same great pub, well kept Robinsons' beers (yes I know), however, I feel that I must gurn about the cost of crisps, ordinary fried potato crisps, not gold plated or served on a silver platter, just crisps. 95p is beyond extortionate. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask.

The Angel Inn, Bowness on Windermere

I have been in the Angel a couple of times and have been pleasantly surprised. It may look a little pretentious from the outside, but nicely decorated and laid out inside with a large conservatory with stone floors, comfy sofas and a large table. Despite other's comments I didn't think it was particularly expensive. Always a couple of well kept beers on, Cocker-hoop and Coniston Bluebird last time I was in. I haven't tried the food though, but will. it seems to effectively tread the line between being a pretentious "southerner's pub" and a place for locals. Worth a visit.

Anglers Arms, Ulverston

I'm sorry to report that the Anglers is now a Thwaites' house, with one guest. It seems a shame since the range of beers when a free house was fantastic. If you like Thwaites' beers, then this is the place for you. If however, you prefer a choice then maybe not.
However, in its defence, the food is still excellent and definitely worth a try if in the area.
My lower rating is based solely on beer as I am not a huge fan of Thwaites, especially when there are fantastic breweries nearby, Hawkshead, Ulverston, Stringers, Greenodd, Coniston, to name but 5. It seems a shame that this establishment had to be sold.

Wheatsheaf Hotel, Kendal

Went in here a few weeks back just because I happened to be coming back from K Village. Thought I would nip in. The Hawkshead bitter was excellent, best I've tasted; right temperature and clear as a bell and decent price. Made the mistake though, of ordering a Landlord next. Oh dear! In comparison it was awful. I can't believe that it was the (pub) landlord's fault though as the Hawkshead was top notch.

The Furness Railway, Barrow In Furness

What's happening to the Railway? Where's the decent beer gone? I get the impression that Wetherspoons is going down hill rapidly. Increasingly their beer range is shrinking, went in Saturday, three pumps had no clips on, the two remaining had Ruddles and Directors. Wouldn't wash my feet in either. As for the other bar, the Hawkshead was coming soon (and had been for two weeks) as was the case for the other beers.

If they are selling out of beer on a Friday / Saturday there should be more ready to pull through and put on. It just doesn't look good when the bar looks so depleted.

In my opinion, if you want a decent pint in a proper wet house go to the Kings at Hawcoat. Five real ales, all top notch.

The Furness Railway, Barrow In Furness

i have been going into the railway since it opened and i am becoming disappointed at the range of beers. constantly there is ruddles, green king and directors and frankly i wouldn't walk to the end of my street to drink any of them. there now seems to be an attempt to increase the range of beers but with 25+ breweries in cumbria why aren't there more local beers on tap? there also always seems to be an "available soon" clip on many beers but the range never seems to vary.

added to this, the fact that the pub is looking rather tired and is in desperate need of a refit and the toilets always smell of stale urine, rather puts you off going in. come on wetherspoons, spruce it up a bit. now that there are an increasing number of pubs in barrow doing reasonably priced, well kept real ale, the railway may find it has a bit if competition.

however, when there is good real ale on, it is well kept.

Whitehouse, Barrow in Furness

Have been going in here since it started selling real ale which is always well kept and well priced (2.30 a pint). bar staff friendly enough and if your pint needs changing (eg near bottom of barrel or on turn) there's no arguing. usually has an ulverston beer on. place itself needs a bit of tlc (but don't we all now and again). give it a try.

Square Orange, Keswick

brilliant little cafe bar in keswick. quite bohemian. real ale available, and well kept and tapas (which i haven't been brave enough to try) and decent pizzas. beer reasonably priced for lakes (2.60 a pint). nip in next time you are in keswick. only gripe is not enough seating, victim of its own success!!

Four in Hand, Keswick

This is a pub which basically takes the p**s out of drinkers. During Easter I went in for a drink with my girlfriend and was amazed to see Jennings Snecklifter at 3.30 a pint. Needless to say I didn't order any and shan't be going in again. At prices like this it's no wonder the pub trade is in trouble. If you fancy a decent (and cheaper) drink in a relaxed atmosphere try the Square Orange around the corner.

Bird in Hand, Ulverston

Haven't been in for a while. It really amazes me how this pub stays open. However, in my experience the beer is always well kept and the staff are always friendly. Give it a try when next in Ulverston.

The Ramsden Arms, Blackpool

went in 19th september for couple of pints with my brother. five real ales on all at decent prices and all well kept. recommend for a couple if in blackpool.

The Miles Thompson, Kendal

what can I say about the Miles Thompson. just what everyone else says really. As a Wetherspoons' pub it pretty generic, clinical decor and an attempt at having an interest in the local area as they all do (I'm from Barrow). That said, the pub always has a good selection of real ales on from both local and national breweries, well kept but sometimes a bit cold. Quite nicely laid out, airey and lots of seats upstairs. Beer cheap enough, but gets too busy on Saturday nights. Its one big advantage over the Furness Railway in Barrow is that its toilets don't smell like an army of incontinent tramps has been in.

Sawyers Arms Hotel, Kendal

I have been going in here regularly for about 6 years. Good town centre boozer which always has a well kept (if that's not a contradiction in terms) Robinsons beer on. Pool table, and usual pub snacks. Staff and locals friendly and sometimes a "turn" on a Saturday night.

Always look forward to it when in Kendal.

22 Jul 2009 14:08

The Riverside Hotel, Kendal

I quite like the riverside. I have been in a few times for a beer (usually when going from the Castle to the Sawyers) and the Hawkshead bitter is always well kept. never seem to be many people in, but I don't think the beer was too pricey.

if you are in the area give it a try.

22 Jul 2009 14:05

The Stan Laurel Inn, Ulverston

i have been going into the stan laurel on and off for at least ten years, and it is nice to say that this pub has never been better. it used to be empty on a saturday night but since the new owners took it over, it has gone from strength to strength and rightly so. the beers are great (more stringers please as i need to try them) the ulverston beers are excellent and all beers are well kept. the food is excellent (i'm running out of superlatives here) and not ridiculously expensive. lots of laurel and hardy memorabilia which is great. give it a try you won't be disappointed.

6 Apr 2009 14:11

Anglers Arms, Ulverston

how can nobody have rated this pub yet? this is a cracking boozer only slightly off the beaten track. what can i say? large variety of real ales in front and back bar, excellent food, friendly staff. next time you are passing or at the lakeside and haverthwaite railway, don't pass it by, walk across the road and see what a good boozer is really like.

6 Apr 2009 14:05

The Golden Rule, Ambleside

been in here a few times. although the pub has that robinsons' "look" about it (ie not redecorated since the 70s) the beer was excellent and the staff friendly. proper pub, no pretensions, no food, just decent real ale and some good decent locals. must be doing something right if it's been in the real ale guide for years on end.

6 Apr 2009 14:00

The Crescent, Salford

been in this place a couple of times. always a good array of real ales, well kept and not too pricey. decor looks like doss - house meets early bubonic, but beers excellent. i also warmed my bum agianst the same fire as dr marx!! (and for a sociology graduate that's about as close to heaven as you can get)

4 Mar 2009 19:00

The Castle Inn, Kendal

visit this pub quite regularly. beer always well kept. but dent has gone? bar staff always friendly, but price of beer has crept up recently.

4 Feb 2009 11:26

Burgundys Wine Bar, Kendal

excellent beer on sale and always well kept. great place for a pint.

4 Feb 2009 11:24

The Swan Inn, Ulverston

absolutely cracking pub. excellent beer, staff always friendly, and beer not too expensive. maybe some of the more "local" breweries' beers could be sold, eg stringers or cumbrian legendary ales. however, keep it up!!

4 Feb 2009 11:21

John Peel Inn, Bowness on Windermere

went into this pub june last year. lass behind the bar as miserable as sin. food ok though, as was beer.
