The Laurie Arms, Haugh of Urr

Update on last review. Sandra and Linda really try to keep the real ale moving and their choices are a LOT more varied and interesting than many in England, let alone D&G! The food quality is variable with chefs turning over fairly frequently, but if you want honest grub served with a reasonable ale, you could do a lot worse. How many pubs do YOU know where there IS no local credible competition?

The Red Lion, Underwood

Great place for a meal or just a good pint! Competent staff who clearly care make a lovely atmosphere. Choice of real ales on Sat included Kelham Pale Rider, Bradfield Farmers and Oakham Stairway to Heaven; therefore only reason it drops a point is that it was short of a dark ale. But the beers on were in fine form, how come this place is not GBG?

We had an evening meal and found the choice excellent. Before we left all the specials had gone! Starters c5 included less usual options such as belly pork, and the mains, which were generous and not expensive, included a very good duck breast, marlin with prawns, as well as steaks, chicken supreme and rack of lamb.

Seek this pub out if you are in the area (its not far off MI J27).

Like a lot of rural pubs with a modest footfall, I guess the diners represent the main income stream, and the recent change of chef should help here. The range of cask ales are not always to our taste, with predictable Yorkshire and Midlands breweries being maybe a little over represented (we wish they would have a regular Sulwath beer) but we have had some cracking pints here and hope to enjoy many more. Sandra and her staff are friendly and effective, even when they have to multi-task. Do visit the Laurie it is a beacon of light in this part of D&G.

The Applecross Inn, Applecross

Well served beer and we enjoyed a burger chips and good side salad (a rarity in this part of the world!). Good, friendly service. Would visit again.

The Torridon Inn, Torridon

Range of well kept local ales, we tried 3 over 3 visits, but the Hebriddean strong ale was a clear favourite! Great staff, a credit to the place, but they did struggle on the evening we ate in the dining room. Food quality was mixed, the scallops starter and salmon main were very good (I think the chef deserves a chance to prove themself!) and very reasonably priced, but other dishes were not so good and veg poor. Well worth a visit, a nice place to be.

The Old Inn, Gairloch

Disappointed by range of beer, not least as on first visit only found the bar when searching for the loos. Only 3 cask ales on, not 'up to 8 in summer' as promoted in GBG though they were in good condition. They were (again) An Teallach, Trade Winds and this time Blavin. Real problem is the place is run for staff; off shift staff block the bar counter, on duty staff hardly look away from wide screen tv even when using the till (who says men can't multi-task!) and the the 3 tv screens were showing staff choice (though most punters were trying quite hard to ignore the them). We must have chosen food badly but were not impressed, the beef in the pie was tasty and tender but the veg was meagre and cooked to buggery. Finally staff clear tables as a last resort (>1.5 hours for the big table outside, ie more was stacked up when we left than when we arrived) and NEVER clean food leftovers off tables. Place needs a good clean. Poor Old Inn
