Plough, Houghton Green

Things seem to have waned somewhat since the conversion into a "Flaming Grill" pub and the retirement of the former landlord. The food isnot great, the number of handpumps has halved and the quality of the ale seems poorer. It's still decent, but just not what it was.

Albion, Warrington

After a period closed, the Albion is open again. It has lost some of the charm, with fairly minimalist internals now in place (presumably resulting from being stripped out when closed), but the beer is still good.

The Lendal Cellars, York

Went here for a mid afternoon bite to eat and a pint. Very pleasant surroundings (though it was rather quiet), decent food and very pleasing to see Aspalls cider on tap. Could happily spend an afternoon putting the world to rights in this place!

The Lass O'Gowrie, Manchester

I do like this pub, nice and quirky with a good selection of drinks. Especial praise for having ditched the Strongbow draught cider in favour of Aspall's - I really could drink that stuff all day.

Bunbury Arms, Chester

Nice pub, decent ales and friendly staff. The food menu is supplemented by a huge specials board - too big in some ways - but the food was good and tasty.

The Devonshire Cat, Sheffield

When I saw the outside I was expecting something quite ordinary, but this place is truly mind blowing! I've never seen a range of beers like it anywhere and they had some superb bottles of cider on offer (my tipple of choice). Food was also delicious. It got very crowded as Friday evening approached and had a wide mix of clientele, but a good atmosphere. I need to find an excuse to go to Sheffield again, for a second crack!

The Temple, Manchester

This place has loads of character - really nowhere else like it! Need to go back soon. The unisex lavs with soft-core pornography on the walls are a surprising feature, however....!

Mr Thomas' Chop House, Manchester

Wonderful architecture, fab green tiling and arches. The food, while not cheap, is of high quality and in good supply. The range of drinks was good too. Bit cramped, but that's the nature of the building - and a fine building it is. We'll be back!

The Yacht Inn, Woodbank

Last time we went there we left without being fed, as they'd closed the kitchen early as they couldn't cope with demand. It wasn't even that busy! Pity, as their steaks are usually good, even if the service is fairly useless.

Rake, Little Stanney

Went one Sunday evening - far too few staff, loads of food items had run out, loads of uncleared tables outside, not ideal. Food was decent enough, though.

The Postern Gate, Warrington

Dreadful hole - "Bangin" beats, dull lighting, limited seating. Only redeeming feature is the resonable speed of service.

Little John Hotel, Hathersage

A few of us popped in here for a meal and a drink last night. The beer was good and the food was decent, with huge portions. The barman seemed a bit over-keen, but that's not a huge issue.

The Knott Bar, Deansgate

Smashing place, loads of character. Only downside is that I didn't spot the real cider they had on tap on my last visit until it was too late......!

The Strands Hotel, Nether Wasdale

The food is superb, the staff are friendly, they have Stowford Press cider and the quirky little games room (table football, anyone?) make this place well worth a visit. This is one of my preferred watering holes when up in the area on business.

The Kilton Inn, Mere

Food is standard chef & brewer. Service quite poor - one barman single handedly dispensing drinks and taking all food orders and just one person serving food (barman said it was due to credit crunch cutbacks). Only real ale on was Bombardier and that ran out while we were there!

The Old Quay, Parkgate

Can't fall off with a carvery for 3.50! Not that exciting in drinks terms, but there is the promise of Greene King real ales soon, I beleive.

Mascrat Manor, Woolston

Never enough staff, food nothing special, there are better 2 for 1s thatn this!

Pleasant pub, decent food, just wish I could win the Thursday night pub quiz for once after years of trying!

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn, Castleton

My girlfriend and I decided to have an evening meal here while staying in Castleton (all of the pubs looked good, but this one had the most tempting menu). We weren't dissappointed. The food was deliciuos (I've never see a Barnsley chop like the one my girlfiend had!) and, in spite of the place being fairly busy, arrived without undue delay. The pub itself was charming and the staff were friendly. The only problem we had was walking back to our hotel, we were stuffed!
