The Fenwick Arms, Claughton

The Punchbowl, Stainton

Great pub, very friendly, nice Guinness *****

The Sun Hotel, Kirkby Lonsdale

The second time I agree with "Pat".

The Sun Inn was, up until 2007, what could be described as an upmarket pub/restaurant, with sky-high prices and snotty service to match (well it is Kirkby Lonsdale). The sky-high prices, and snotty staff/clientele remain. The pub is most definitely gone.

If you want a real pub, take the bus and go out of town.

Whoop Hall Hotel, Kirkby Lonsdale

Pretty much a typical South Lakeland pub. Snotty service, snotty clientele and pretty bland and souless (as last reviewer said).

Better pubs just down the road in Lancaster.

Craven Heifer, Ingleton

Average. Not really for the under-60's, beer okay though. Probably won't pop back in.

Three Horseshoes, Ingleton

Nice pub that thankfully isn't full of hikers and old dears.

Nice beer, friendly bar staff and nice beer garden to the rear.

The Bay Horse, Arkholme

Never open...friendly enough when they are!

Lakeland Gate, Carlisle

Interesting combination of friendly pub, restaurant and children's play area. It seems to work well, and staff are pretty jovial (sometimes under trying circumstances) and welcoming.

The bar is pretty relaxing, and beer/lager isn't too expensive. There is also a smoking area at the front and back, should you need it. The restaurant is pretty well priced, and food is standard pub fayre, although it's pretty darn good.

There is both an indoor and outdoor play area for kids.

The Boardroom, Carlisle

Lovely pub, with nice lager and very reasonably priced food (and good too!).

Black Swan Hotel, Kendal

Fine old pub that has recently added another cockatoo to its collection. I have been informed that the news presenter off Lookaround (Tim whats-his-face) as well as Jimmy Cricket are regular visitors to this fin Kendalian institution.

Friendly barmaid and characterful potholed bar seats abound in this wonderful pub, where Vera Lynn is yet to put in an appearance.

The Rainbow Tavern, Kendal

Fine pub and friendly bar staff. Has a small smoking courtyard at the rear of the premises, handy for those warm summer evenings.
Well priced beers and friendly clientele. Not sure what Nomadic is talking about, as the clientele were mainly normal work-a-day folk and tourists. "Benifit junkys" (sic) appear to prefer the Last Orders to be fair.

Bridge Hotel, Kendal

Possibly one of the best pubs in Kendal. Reasonable prices, friendly bar staff, brilliant location overlooking the river and nice food.
Also a handy all-night car park at the back of the premises.

Highly recommended *****

The Kendal Arms, Kendal

Fantastic friendly pub of the work-a-day old school variety, that has sadly died out in most of the Lake District.

Boasting a large car park, and being situated on the outskirts of Kendal, this pub is friendly enough, and has ample seating and pool table. Also try some of the delicious food that is made here: brilliant!

Five stars *****

The Station, Oxenholme

A pub with potential, sadly lacking atmosphere.

Some good points are the childrens playground (Kendal is notorious for being anti-child, so a childrens playground is a bonus) and the views from the nearby Helm.

Bad points are bar prices and dire service from the barmaid. I won't be returning here after being ignored and then having to drink my drink in silence while the barmaid sat there texting away and completely blanking me.
A much better pub is the nearby Punchbowl. Just a shame they don't have a childrens playground :(

The Castle Inn, Kendal

Ok, good craic. Barmaid was rude and quite dour however.

Burgundys Wine Bar, Kendal

Bit rough. Seems to attract the chav element by the dozen. Even spotted snorting dodgy looking people in the toilets.

Not good place to go.

The Masons Arms, Kendal

Absolutely wonderful place to drink. Lovely people, great service, good range of beers and good craic.

Ignore Sooty and friends who are just out to tarnish the reputation of this valuable Kendalian institution. Lovely place to drink, recommended.

Ye Olde Fleece Inn, Kendal

Honestly, who cares about 'real ale'?

The place has got a good atmosphere, good craic, friendly staff and an okay range of beers. Never seems to be any trouble and is packed out on Friday/Saturday nights. Good place.

Last Orders, Kendal

If you're looking for a pub with good craic, good atmosphere etc then this ISN'T the pub for you. Dive!

It is okay if you're half cut and want somewhere cheap and cheerful to finish the night off however.

The Dun Horse, Kendal

Very friendly pub. Lots of friendly locals inhabit this fine olde worlde Kendalian bar, which is much different than the poseur pubs that are quite common in the Lakes. A real mans pub of the olde skool.

Recommended!

The Queens, Carnforth

Good old fashioned pub, in the old skool category. Good craic, and friendly locals make this pub a great place to pop in on your way through town. There is a good secure carpark to the back, a friendly landlord and landlady, and beer isn't too expensive.

Quite a cosy pub, popular with the locals and not bad at all.

The Watermill Inn, Ings

Good points

* Good selection of beers, wines and stouts
* Food okay

Bad points

* Miles from most places. Typical taxi fare return will set you back over 30 easily.
* Lacklustre service and staff, who seem to care little about the clientele.
* Complete lack of atmosphere. No craic or entertainment of any sort.
* Overpriced.
* Quite a drab interior.
* Too many dogs, I actually fell over three that were just strolling around.

Basically if the only reason that you go to a pub is to drink ales and not socialise with anyone, and you aren't interested in your surroundings and happen to be over the age of 60, this is the pub for you. There is even a "Beerfest" that will grab any coffin dodger who happens to have the capacity to handle a few overpriced pints at the bar.
There are no discernable views to write home about, and nothing that marks this pub out from any other. Strangely enough, I went to this pub back in 2005 and seem to remember it was quite good. It appears to have gone downhill since then.
