The King of Denmark, Islington

This is one classic pub. As a previous correspondent mentioned the age group is in the upper quartile but that did not stop anyone enjoying themselves. Being a lad in his 50's I was in great demand on the dance floor. The crowd had dressed for the evening the Elvis impersonator did a good job. Cannot comment on the mechanics of the place because I was too busy having a good time to really notice. Well worth a look.

The Mayflower, Rotherhithe

It looks all right and the position cannot be questioned but the prices can. If Execution Dock was still in operation the person running this pub would be strung up for piracy. Tourists only I think because you would only want to be robbed once.

The Ship, Rotherhithe

Have visited The Ship twice recently as part of a local pub crawl. It passed the "shall we have another one here or move on?" test twice. We did three rounds there on the last visit. Small but pleasant outside area at the back. Worth a visit.

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

This place is it. Character, character and more character. The only thing it has too much of is cigarette smoke which means street drinking, and this is quite OK too in this area. I will return

The Free Press, Cambridge

One of the better pubs I have visited and one I would back to without a flicker of doubt. No smoke, good beer and good food. Three out of three for me. Oh, and the staff are good too.

The Grapes, Limehouse

A good little boozer with a great view of the river. Have been back to this place and not been disappointed. Fish and chips were good, for pub fish and chips. Well worth a visit.

The White Swan and Cuckoo, Wapping

Has potential but like so many pubs does not quite make it. Good position, good layout and the thickest cigarette smoke imaginable some days. Better along the river at the Captain Kidd or the Town of Ramsgate

Whelans, Surrey Quays

Watched a world cup game in there out of necessity and liked the place. Local lads swearing and shouting but all good humoured. Will go there again.

The Travellers Rest, Meltham

Staggered up the hill in the heat to find it was closed. Being renovated by the looks of it.

Waggon and Horses, Meltham

Reasonable small town pub. Friendly people behind the bar.

Suchard, London Bridge

Now renamed Suchard. Not the best pub around but the Thai food on offer was good. The place is a bit rough but good enough for a pint and a look at sport on the big screen.

The Polar Bear, Leicester Square

No longer a no smoking pub and to be avoided if that is your persuasion. Just another boozer because the lack of smoke was about all that made it worth a visit.

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

Great arts and crafts interior that must be seen. Food is fine for pub food and the wine list is good.
Not sure what tombola had been sticking up his/her nose but the place smelt fine, for a pub.

The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

This pub offers so much and does not quite deliver. It has looks, location and history but does not quite make it. I live locally and see the food supply company delivering the frozen meals in a bag in the early hours of the morning. Such a shame. It is a classic case of pub people should not run this place. No, I do not mean a load of toffs at the helm or even a gastropub. It needs "hospitality" people. Bring the food up a notch and put some smiling faces behind the bar and it could be a great place.

The Ashburnham Arms, Greenwich

A good pub that grows on you. I have it on good authority the food is all done in house, not from some frozen time capsule production line. It certainly tastes like the real deal. Good mix of customers from toffs to your average punter. Well worth a visit.

Turners Old Star, Wapping

The East End boy who ran this pub seems to have moved on and new people are running it now. If there ever was a pub that could be a great pub this is it. I hope it can be dragged up to where it belongs.

The Old House At Home, Shadwell

Had a great session in this place with the chaps from the local fire station. Alas the flame has died and it will soon be a shop and 8 flats.

The Angel, Rotherhithe

A great restoration has been done on this place. The no smoking bar upstairs has a wonderful view of the river. Food is good and there is a lot of it. Have had a couple of good sessions there.

The Town of Ramsgate, Wapping

A great little pub with a wonderful beer garden right on the river. I look forward to the no smoking law coming into effect and the place will be near perfect. Food is good too, as far as pub food goes. Nice people behind the bar.

The Royal Oak, Bethnal Green

Friendly character pub. Good wine selection and all the usual suspects in beer. Will be going back to try the food
