BITE user comments - jackbar

Comments by jackbar

The Woodman, Highgate

Sadly this is my last review for bite as I have got a bit sick of the abuse from bad landlords who go nuts when you dare point out that there pub is a toilet!
Ive wrote many good reviews and plenty of bad ones and i know the best pubs in London and the worst (The Shakespear at Victoria is the worst pub in the world!!!)
Bite has been of great use to me and many others and long may it continue....
Its fitting my last review should be on a pub around the corner as Ive used it a few times lately and have to give credit where its due, massive improvements in all areas........
Food very very good
Toilets, excellent
Ale well kept
Garden huge and well kept(nice lighting etc)
Nice mix of clients but is very white and Middle class but so is Highgate!
So well done to the owners they have transformed the place and deserve credit where its due!
Now get some staff with a smile please !!!!!

The Crown, Bloomsbury

Pleased to say I popped in Yesterday afternoon and this hidden gem is back to its best, great service, great landlords and always a good atmosphere...go there! Oh and the grubs good to.

27 Jun 2012 14:40

The Alfred Herring, Palmers Green

Had to write a quick update yesterday there was a homeless girl/druggie sat on the outside seats with her shoes and socks off picking huge scabs off her feet!!!
I finished my pint and decided to skip lunch......................Yuk!

23 Jun 2012 12:25

The Alfred Herring, Palmers Green

Had to write another review on this place as went back and it really is a total enigma and everyone should go at least once.
They now have a lovely little terrace at the front which would be nice to sit and sip your pint on a summers evening but you cant get a seat because all the local hobos sit in the seats with there cans of white lightning as they are all banned from the pub.
Whilst watching this you can see the hordes of eastern europeans all in nylon tracksuits and bling with there tarty looking birds pulling up in there huge motors even tho they are on housing benefit...amazing.
Amongst all this you will find the odd poor sod who just wants a cheap quiet pint bemoaning what has happened to his country, the odd suit or postman.
A threat of violence hangs permanently in the air ,your feet stick to the carpets buts heres the amazing thing!!!!!!!
The staff are some of the best ive ever seen fantatic quick service ,smiley,helpful....I could go on... a couple of them are pretty and how they do there job so well I will never know in such a scary and slightly smelly place.
Want to see Camerons Big Society pop in here,Illegal migrants by the dozen, benefit cheats, wasted idiots, druggies and homeless people in the best seats!!!
Well done Dave you should come here!

15 Jun 2012 15:32

The Globe, Baker Street

Run by two of the campest and nicest men you will ever meet, sure this pub is a tourist trap but at the same time the food is good the ale is well kept and the bar well run.
Do not go anywhere near it when theres anything going on at Wembley but on a hot summers day get a cold beer and sit outside and watch the scores of stunning ladies walk past, Heaven.

11 Jun 2012 13:36

The Constitution, Lisson Grove

Sadly now gone to Pub Heaven, where will the charming locals go ......oh no ....just had a thought ....crap there coming in my local.....ahhhhhhhhhh

11 Jun 2012 13:30

The London Pub, Bloomsbury

This place does not come close to beating the simply disgusting Shakespear at Victoria station which is the ultimate in filthy dirty tacky and horrid tourist trap pubs however an excellent attempt is made here to get the gourmless tourists to feel this is a typical London pub which it so clearly is not.
Ugly beyond words from the outside, souless inside some of the worst trained staff in all of the world (did not know what Pinot is).
Do not go in this building.....there are dozens of fair to very good pubs within quarter of a mile,go down the side streets or drink in the park with the hobos.

11 Jun 2012 13:16

The Northumberland Arms, Fitzrovia

Grotty one room pub which for some reason is always rammed, slow unfriendly service ,horrid tiny toilets, grumpy bouncers ,4.40 for a pint of warm lager in a dirty glass.
Place is a toilet AVOID

9 Jun 2012 11:52

The Crown, Bloomsbury

In last night for a few Jars and has now gone off the scale as far as bad service is concerned.
For ever to get served even tho the place was half empty,Piles of dirty glasses outside, overflowing ashtrays, gents disgusting,no toilet paper in the ladies.
The local tramps were drinking the left over drinks and as we were sat outside we were approached by beggars half a dozen times in two hours, not a problem just a pain in the butt and to be fair the local hobos are more polite than the bar staff.
A real shame because this is a super pub, we went across the road to the god awful all bar one...enough said!

9 Jun 2012 11:06

The Crown, Bloomsbury

Despite excellent previous review im sad to report that the staff have gone down hill, shame really as still an excellent pub but some real dopey staff behind the bar instead of excellent landlord make getting served .......lets say an experience!

8 Jun 2012 13:16

The Audley, Mayfair

Went for a pint and a bite to eat on Saturday last in this beautiful looking pub.
Sadly the usual security staff had gone missing and my girl had her handbag nicked from under the table, cctv not working, we should have been more careful but having spoke to the police this is rampant in this part of town so be careful! Pub needs proper cctv and security on both doors, didnt get to finish our drinks or eat our food and complaints did not even get a response.
Be Careful.

8 Jun 2012 10:57

The Woodman, Highgate

Oh dear oh dear oh dear, popped in with a friend on Saturday to catch the end of the play offs.
Like i said toilets are amazing compared with what they used to be and im told the ladies are like something out of Hollywood however we were back to the miserable unsmiling and unfriendly staff again all yapping amongst themselves whilst its 3 deep at the bar.
Shameful

21 May 2012 14:00

The Three Tuns, Marylebone

Sad to report we were in here on Thursday last week and the pub has taken a severe turn for the worse.
Still got the lovely fire and all the beams etc, the only problem is the bar stuff have gone from the best in London to worst , shocking amount of time to get served, staff were unfriendly so I guess its now changed into a typical london boozer,Shame!

5 May 2012 12:25

The Constitution, Lisson Grove

A charming ,friendly well maintained ale house only yards from the bustle of Marylebone station. The ever friendly locals will charm you with tales of days gone by as you sip a finely poured jug of ale in front of the roaring log fire, the glasses are cleaned by the charming and beautiful looking bar staff who are dressed in Ralph lauren, maybe you can sample the excellent food which has won many awards or visit the spotless toilets where you could eat your dinner off the loos.
NAH.........ITS A SHIT HOLE,MORE DRUGS THAN WHITNEY HOUSTON,LOCALS TRADE DRUGS AND STOLEN GOODS ALL DAY IF YOUR BRAVE ENOUGH GO IN AND SEE CAMERONS BIG SOCIETY(BUT WEAR A STAB VEST)

26 Apr 2012 18:06

The Wrestlers, Highgate

Sunday Times 15/4/12 The best pub in North London, voted a mile better than the tourist filled Flask and the spaniards.
This is true and the landlord is a great bloke but i still feel its a little overated but we are blessed with great pubs in Highgate and this is a top boozer in anytown.

19 Apr 2012 13:33

The Woodman, Highgate

Despite being kind of banned for daring to comment on the state of the loos and told to drink in Wetherspoons by the Attitude full landlord (see where the staff get it from) took the wife in over Easter when we got off the tube and the place has been transformed, toilets renovated etc,had a delightful meal, decent pint and shockingly the service was reasonable and friendly.
Still not a patch on The bull or The wrestlers but competition is fierce in Highgate and i would say fair play for trying
I will be popping back just in case the level of service was a fluke and will keep you all updated.
Well done The woodman.

14 Apr 2012 14:35

The Rocket, Euston

No one in there right mind would go in any pub near Euston station they are without exception dreadful..............

31 Mar 2012 10:47

The Oakwood Tavern, Oakwood

Spent a couple of hours in here prior to a function at the golf course across the road.Pub was rammed with a good mix of locals ,some really really pissed and some just off there heads but all well behaved with no bad attitude.
Excellent bar staff, great pint of the black stuff clean toilets, much better than it looks !

15 Mar 2012 13:06

The Fox Public House, Palmers Green

I have a contract in the area so had to take the guys for a drink somewhere, having gone back today i feel my first review was harsh.
This visit staff were excellent ,well poured pint and toilets were fine.
Its a huge pub with a hidden gem of a beer garden which i didnt see on my first visit.
Even the locals seemed friendly, will be going back.

29 Feb 2012 14:56

The Woodman, Highgate

Hey did anyone else notice the comments from Tom the owner finish with his user name charlie69............Scroll down and find the one good review on the pub is from ........wait for it....charlie69............The games up Tom this sites for drinkers to offer honest opinions not for self promotion, like your pub you are a disgrace.

27 Feb 2012 14:59

The Fox Public House, Palmers Green

Just popped in her for a cold lager after a meeting nearby,oh dear......great looking building ,very fit but unsmiling barmaid loadsa noisy Spurs fans...ugh,can it get any worse?
Crappy pint ,dirty toilets,tv blaring ........this ones not for me!

18 Feb 2012 12:28

The Alfred Herring, Palmers Green

Ummmmm. sticky carpets ,mostly smelly locals, everyone eating chips and onion rings, tattoos and piercings with thongs hanging out there arses (and the girls are rough as well) But to be fair i had an excellent pint which was well served by a friendly and very busy Manager,3 deep at the bar, smilling happy barmaids which is a miracle because if i had to work here id hang myself......

18 Feb 2012 12:24

The Angel, Highgate

Had a lovely evening in here the other night, not the best in Highgate but does have a buzzy atmosphere, staff were great, beer well poured, good mix of Highgate types, heard bad things about the food so if your eating perhaps head to the bull down the road.

17 Feb 2012 17:16

The Flask, Highgate

Probably the most overated pub in North London, its not bad its just not as good as everyone and the owners think it is!

15 Feb 2012 15:05

The Crown, Bloomsbury

The reviewer below is correct ,this is a regular haunt of mine and Angela and Ron (new landlords) are a delight.
The usual Sam Smiths stuff ,well kept ale, great prices for this part of town and a good mix of clients such as students, nutty proffesors, suits, thearte goers from some northern mining village and some very pretty girls.
Bar staff are friendly and superbly efficent as it gets rammed on a Friday evening but you will still get served, lovely small terrace to the rear with a few seats.
Best pub and far and away the best landlords in this part of town,
you should go there!!

11 Feb 2012 13:36

The Woodman, Highgate

The Woodman saga rumbles on,the wife was out with the girls on Tuesday evening and i asked her how her evening went,oh she said we had a fab time we we went to the woodman as it was easy for the girls getting off the train, food was superb , friendly service , reasonable value , lovely warm atmosphere.......i had to check she was in the right pub,!!!Last night i picked an old mate up from Muswell hill and as we driving back to Highgate i said do you fancy a quick one in the woodman...NO he screamed id rather eat my own face than ever go back to that place,so the moral is you take as you find and the review below by barney miller is so obviouly the landlord its untrue! this site is a gem as it gives us all a chance to point each other in the right direction and helps a great deal if you dont know an area but really Barney only one review and thats on your own pub and that gives your game away as we all write lots of reviews to help our fellow drinkers.

11 Feb 2012 13:23

The Victoria, Highgate

This is the nearest pub to my house so should be my local but it isnt, cant put my finger on whats wrong with this place but just doesnt work for me!
Had loads of owners managers over the years and back around 2005 got good for a while but not recently.
Try the Bull up the road which is excellent or the overated but still very good Wrestlers on the other side of the road or only a couple of minutes to the strange Highgate inn around the corner where you could have a great night....or a god awful one!

4 Jan 2012 17:06

The Prince of Wales Ale House, Highgate

an odd but not unfriendly pub full of bookish locals and can seem very clicky to an outsider (ive lived inHighgate 20 years)but wouldnt consider it any better or worse than the flask just a lot less students in the summer!
Always a decent pint and i hear the thai food is good if a tad pricey.

4 Jan 2012 16:58

The Bull, Highgate

Wins most improved pub of the year!!!!!!
Great warm and friendly staff, excellent food, reasonable prices, good mix of clients ,well kept and poured ale, spotless loos,
Well done everyone as over the years its been a shame to see this place closing all the time, the wrestlers has serious competition for once!

4 Jan 2012 16:49

The Swan and Edgar, Marylebone

Once this place was the awesome Feathers one of the best watering holes around but omg dont know what it is now but it sure aint a pub!

4 Jan 2012 16:43

The Hobgoblin, Marylebone

Sadly all the reviews below about the crazy bar lady are correct but i know Andy very well and he is a super landlord so will mention the tapwater and ignorant staff to him as its a shame as the food is superb and good value for the area, decent pub alround so dont be put off, full off bankers on a friday night.

4 Jan 2012 16:40

The Apollo, Marylebone

oh dear oh dear ,the book on how not to run a pub was wrote here!!!!

4 Jan 2012 16:33

The Coach and Horses, Mayfair

Fantastic and very well run little pub just off Bond street, lovely staff, good food at amazing prices for this part of town, good mix of suits, tourists and oddballs, can get mobbed on a Friday evening but otherwise a great Pub.

4 Jan 2012 16:31

Flanagans of Battersea, Battersea

Found this place by accident on my way to Battersea park and what a complete and utter gem of a place, friendly staff, clean , fantastic and great value grub,Locals are that good mix which make a pub work, been back four times already,Super pub go there!

4 Jan 2012 16:01

The Constitution, Pimlico

We use this pub for the footie or rugby, full of characters and the odd lost tourist, well kept bar ,friendly ish landlord, better than most around here!

4 Jan 2012 15:48

The Orange Brewery, Belgravia

No idea what this place is like because although i work around the corner on the three or four times we have been we have not been able to get served so have retired to the also busy but proper bar staff at the fox around the corner,
Both Punters and bar staff are beautiful but wouldnt want to be stuck in a lift with any of them!!!!!!

4 Jan 2012 15:37

The Woodman, Highgate

Omg, Tom the landlord has the cheek to rip me apart and accuse me of drinking at Wetherspoons because i dared to comment about the state of his pubs toilets and usually grumpy staff.
I dont drink at Wetherspoons Tom but im not such a snob that i would hold it against anyone who did !
I except your comments on the prices may have been a little unfair ,but stand by my comments on the toilets ,staff and food but also except i may have just been unlucky although looking at the other reviews and theres a lot of unlucky people!.
You will be pleased to know i dont visit your pub anymore (but bought an excellent xmas tree from your garden this year)
Best Regards
Jackbar

2 Jan 2012 10:49

The Fox and Hounds, Belgravia

Truly awesome pub ,great regulars, stunning bar staff ,well kept ale, this place is a hidden gem.
On the pricey side im afraid but thats Sloane square..........

23 Nov 2011 17:23

The Shakespeare, Victoria

Omg,surely the worst pub ever to grace this planet...........cant find the words to describe the horror show that the hordes of tourists who fill up this place have to go through, this is a Taylor Walker pub who run a couple of great boozers within a few hundred yards of this toilet and how can they let this happen?
A complete and utter shithole which reminds me do not head anywhere near the loos,breathtaking.........
What must the tourists think ? ashamed to be British!

3 Nov 2011 19:22

The Albert, Victoria

OMG. POPPED IN HERE TONIGHT FOR A QUICK ONE !!!!!
HOW TO SUM IT UP!!
Rudest most awful female bar manager you will ever meet
toilets that made me ashamed to be British
badly poured pint
so many better pubs around the corner and most of them are also Taylor Walker.
I work for the met and this used to be our local ! No more
avoid like the plauque
God help the tourists

28 Oct 2011 01:33

The Woodman, Highgate

Wow,over priced, useless staff, filthy tolets, cold food, garden overlooks the A1 and is noisy and polluted, have a walk up the hill and you have a choice of cracking pubs with much more to offer AVOID

19 Oct 2011 20:17

The British Queen, Shepherds Bush

A Mate took me in here for a couple of pints of the black stuff, dirty, smelly old mans pub I LOVED IT, no probs with the locals as there was only one in there and he was pished

19 Oct 2011 19:55

The Rising Sun, Belgravia

Cracking locals pub which is far and away the best in the area looks rubbish from the outside but nice terrace to the rear and a bar of characters go try it

19 Oct 2011 19:50

The Horse and Groom, Windsor

Good friendly well run pub overun with tourists in Summer, nice outside seating area ,imagine it would be great on a cold winters evening as very cosy.

16 Jun 2011 12:27

The Trooper, Windsor

good pub, met some very pleasent locals, would return

16 Jun 2011 12:24

The King and Castle, Windsor

Best spoons ive ever been in, opposite the castle with a huge decked area at the back with loads of seating for a sunny day, staff were overun with Ascot punters the day i was there but still got served.
Mix of locals and tourists and in no way like the spoons at the other end of town however it is much pricier!!!! that said it is still value for money.
Good pub

16 Jun 2011 12:23

Henry's Cafe Bar, Green Park

Not as bad as some of the reviews could make you think and does have a small seating area outside where you can have a smoke or take in the bus fumes (same thing) staff were miserable but not rude ,sadly this is what to expect from a tourist trap pub in this part of town.
A g&t and a pint of lager was 13.90 very very expensive pub.

31 Mar 2011 09:26

The Marquis of Granby, Fitzrovia

Thought id seen it all until i visited this place, what a complete and utter dump, gents loo is the size of a shoebox, which is not good but urinal covered in vomit and toilet AND WALLS covered in poop, yuk, was there for a while as was stuck with a group and manager was told but done nothing about it, shocking prices, rude staff, ignorant bouncers, god knows what the tourists think???simply the worst and most disgusting pub ive ever been in,give this one a miss!

18 Mar 2011 07:22

The Clarence, Mayfair

Where do i start......not been in here for years even tho its around the corner from my office and wont be going back again ever.
Put simply and due to lack of time i will not bore you with the whole long story however i have found some great pubs through this site and thought i would do the right thing and advise you AVOID at all costs.
Worst service ever
Rude staff
obnoxious manager
awful beer
high prices (4 a pint)
filthy toilets
dirty glasses
could go on but take my word for it this place is a toilet ,try the kings head or the goat round the corner.

1 Mar 2011 09:34

The Crown and Sceptre, Shepherds Bush

Thank you beer in the evening for pointing out this hidden gem of a pub!
Spent last Saturday in complete misery going from one w12 dump to another so decided to check out the website and saw great reviews for the crown.
Its off the Goldhawk road in a small backstreet but there is a huge new college being built at the end of the street so expect it to be packed in months to come !!
I loved this place from the moment i walked in,great looking barmaid and very friendly, lovely room, awesome beer garden with heaters for the smokers, great range of thai food at what are incredibly cheap prices, clean toilets ,great range of beers, pleasant mix of locals, sky sports only put on when a match starts.
Could only have been better if Kelly Brook was sat on my lap!!!!
Put simply GREAT PUB

23 Feb 2011 11:21

The Woodman, Highgate

Moody staff, unfriendly pub, very expensive, filthy toilets however you can sit in the lovely garden and suck in the bus fumes from the nearby archway road, better places nearby.

19 Feb 2011 15:47

The Boogaloo, Highgate

Dont know where that last review came from but this place is a dump, overpriced ,dirty, sullen staff,AVOID

19 Feb 2011 15:45

The Wrestlers, Highgate

The most overated pub ive ever come across, staff quality varies, very middle class all rugby jumpers and white faces, the sunday lunch is excellent tho.

19 Feb 2011 15:42

The Highgate Inn, Highgate

a very strange place with an odd mix of locals and a landlord who has varying mood swings, always open late and directly on the Archway road with no outside space ,not ever going to be a summer pub and far to many spurs fans for my liking.
Well run bar and the food is excellent.

19 Feb 2011 15:39

The Gatehouse, Highgate

not bad for a wetherspoons and a nice garden at the back however be prepared for a long wait to get your beer!!!!!

19 Feb 2011 15:34

The Stinging Nettle, Shepherds Bush

Popped in here after a couple in the disgusting Goldhawk down the road so it didnt have much to live up to!!
Nice enough building, pleasent but useless staff (girl did not know what Jd is )
alarm kept going off in the open kitchen with the manager screaming at the staff in front of the customers, the loos are miles away up a dirty staircase with old furniture everywhere.
VERY EXPENSIVE, but could be a nice pub and did serve a nice pint .

19 Feb 2011 15:22

The Goldhawk, Shepherds Bush

Omg ,visited this place last Saturday as visiting a friend in the bush, what a dump ....blaring music, loads of pissed up idiots, dirty ,crap beer and there was no nice way to describe the toilets.
Service was the worst ive had in ages, bored sullen staff and forever to get served, we left and went up to the stinging nettle.

19 Feb 2011 15:14

The Three Tuns, Marylebone

Fantastic pub very well ran with on the ball staff and although often packed to the rafters you do get a good atmosphere ,so much so the street outside is an extension of the pub, good food but dont go if you dont like crowds.

19 Feb 2011 15:03

The Duke's Head, Highgate

with regard to the last comment i was the same until i plucked up courage!!!
Great little pub and excellent polish chap behind the bar who remembered my name and what i drank when i went back a week later.
Beer is good friendly ish locals for London and now my favourite pub in Highgate

10 Feb 2011 14:50

The Gunmakers, Marylebone

Used to be a great pub........popped in last saturday evening and thought it had gone down hill a little,no atmosphere unfriendly staff (they used to be the best in London) and usual 5 deep at the bar.
Avoid friday evenings when its full of braying drunken suits but do go on st georges day for one hell of a party but you have to expect a long wait to get your beer and most of that will be spilled over you,

10 Feb 2011 14:26

The Allsop Arms, Marylebone

Funny place this and has gone down hill rapidly lately, staff are mainly polish which is not normally a problem unless they are yapping in there own lanquage so much that you dont get served.
No sport any more and really just a commuter pub with average range of beers.
