The Lion Hotel, Farningham

As part of Vintage Inns this is more of a restaurant. I have lunched or dined here 7 or 8 times this year and enjoy the food and choice of ales (usually three). It is popular and nearly always busy. It is likely to get even busier when summer arrives as it is by the River Darent. Service can be slow (staff are hard pushed but friendly); that apart, I would recommend it.

The Bull, Horton Kirby

The Bull is under new management who are trying hard to restore to it's former glory. There is usually a good choice of beer with up to six real ales. Occasionally the range is limited and Hophead is not my favourite. How I wish more pubs would take recommendations from their regular / semi-regular clients rather than assume we particularly like drinking what remains available when the choice is Hophead and American Pale Ale. Most of my friends prefer traditional style ales like Doom Bar which has been very good but runs out - surely there is a message here. Also the wine range is very limited and our wives don't think they get much choice at all! As it is my local I will try to use it more often. I sincerely hope the new management succeed.

The Phelips Arms, Montacute

Had lunch here in July. Food and service were fine and staff friendly. Three Palmer's on, including Copper Ale. Based on my experienc e I would go back again.

The Shore Inn, East Wittering

Had family lunch here on 22 June. Food was good and the service friendly. A good choice of real ales. Worth a visit although food not served most evenings.

The Fox Inn, Felpham

Lunched here on 25 June. Service was good as was the food. Six real ales available and the Palmer's Copper Ale was excellent.

The Square and Compass, Worth Matravers

Went twice last week when we stayed at next village. Great for beer and cider. The Copper Ale was the best pint we had all week and the pasties were great too. Sitting outside in glorious sunshine was idyllic. Limited food (pies and pasties only) meant we did not go to dinner there but it is a good old fasnioned pub.

The Ship Inn, Langton Matravers

Went three times in the week (from 18 May) we stayed nearby and ate twice. There were 10 of us and we all found it friendly and the food was good. Beers included Fossil Fuel and Best from the Isle of Purbeck, in good condition and a reasonably priced range of wines. Worth a visit.

The King Ethelbert Inn, Reculver

Visited on a warm sunny summer's day and had a pleasant lunch on the decked terrace. Three beers available. Adnam's Explorer, Wantsum More and one other I did not try. Worth a visit.

The Vine Inn, Tenterden

Lunched here with family twice. Food good and a friendly service in a bright eating area. Usual Shepherd Neame beers in good condition. Will go back again when next in Tenterden.

The Brook House Inn, Boot

Well worth a visit. Lunched with friends whilst on holiday and all eight of us were appreciative of the choice of food (excellent menu and much more in additon to pub fayre) and drinks. There were five real ales and all in good condition. If only this was my local.

The Punchbowl, The Green

Great beer and a must for real ale drinkers. Leat, Whatitsname and Black Dog Freddy tried and all excellent. Weaker beers cost 2.50 a pint so great value.

King William IV, Kirksanton

As a party of 8 we visited for Sunday lunch on 19 June. The carvery was excellent for choice, quality and value. There were two ales including Theakston's Best. Overall a nice pub with friendly staff and worth a visit.

The Queens Arms, South Kensington

Chose this pub for lunch (group of 10) last Sunday because of real ale selection and proximity to the Royal Albert Hall. Beer selection was good (5) and Doom Bar was excellent. Food was above average. Will return next time we are going to RAH. Only grouse was we had to ask for glasses to be topped up as some were well short after settlement (it should be done without asking) and bar staff could have been more friendly.

The Bell Inn, Walberswick

Lunched with friends last weekend during a circular walk from Southwold. Well worth the visit. Great old building - fascinating interior. Food was fine as were the Adnams beers. Unfortunately (for us) the Old Ale ran out before we were able to sample it and 'Lighthouse' was not on.

The Robin Hood and Little John, Bexleyheath

A friendly place with a very good beer (six real ales) selection including Adnams Broadside and Sharp's Doombar. Well worth a visit.

Sussex Potter, North Lancing

Now a Miller & Carter steakhouse and bar. Lunched there today with friends and we all ate well. There is a fixed price menu which is good value. The plus for me the three ales included Sharp's Doombar (others Pride and Harveys). Better than average wine selection. Worth a visit and will go back.

The Crown, Groombridge

Nice old pub but we were unlucky on our visit yesterday as there was only Harvey's and when I said it was not my favourite, the barlady asked if I wanted lager. I said I didn't so she suggested a brandy! Perhaps she was trying to be funny but I got the impression she'd had a busy day. The food was OK but a bit overpriced - 10.50 for fish & chips and 9.90 for pie & veg. As we were leaving the Larkins was being replaced - sorry to miss that. The overall experience was not favourable. Even when pubs are busy there should be more customer friendly service and choice; how long does it take to put a new barrell on? If publicans want customers to return and / or make recommendations then they need to be giving service all the time.

The Guildhall, Folkestone

Sitting outside on a sunny day was very pleasant with four ales to choose from and a good range of food including fresh fish (no batter). We had a baby with us and he was well looked after too. It is near the high steet and shops but in a quiet location. Worth a visit.

The Filo (First In Last Out), Hastings

Based on the good reviews and entry in the GBG we just had to visit on a day trip to Hastings and were not disappointed. Beer including own brews were very good. A comfortable and friendly pub and would recommend.

The George Inn, Leeds

Spent a very pleasant evening here and seems a friendly pub with a good menu. Master brew and Whitstable Bay on handpump. It was Friday and quite busy but easy to chat and relax.

The Bull, Horton Kirby

The Bull is one of our regular pubs and there is an excellent choice of real ales, which are always in top condition. For real ale the pub is hard to beat and is one of the best in NW Kent. With frequent changes, there is often something new to try and enjoy. It shows the fantastic variety of beer in this country and how it should be served.

For beer the Bull deserves a score of 9 plus. The wine selection (as with many pubs) could be much improved in quality and whites served colder. As many of our better halves prefer to drink wine, it would make for a more enjoyable visit for them too.

Bucks Head, Church Stretton

Good beer and food. A pleasant and relaxing lunch. I sampled the Banks bitter and mild, which were in good shape. Decent range of food.

The Spooner's Bar, Porthmadog

For everyone interested in steam railways and real ale Spooner's is well worth a visit. Previous posts give an accurate description. On the day of my visit there were six ales, including two from Holden's and Snowdonia Ale from Purple Moose. The ones I tried were in good condition and I would have stopped for more. Sitting outside in the summer sun on the platform was very pleasant. The choice was much better than the Station Inn on the main line station, which only had two ales on.

The Pilot Inn, Lydd

Lunched here on 9th June. There were ten of us and the consensus was the food was good but overpriced. The staff serving us were friendly. It was not as busy on the day as we have known it so the staff were not rushed off their feet. I drank the IPA which was OK. I have been there quite a few times over the last 25 years and obviously the pub has changed and is more commercial. It is still worth a visit but probably best to avoid the busiest times.

The Star, Romney Marsh

Lunched here on 11 June. Food was fine, staff were friendly and choice of beer was good - Adnam's Bitter, Adnam's Broadside, Young's Bitter and Ringwood 49er, which was superseded by Adnam's Lighthouse. Tried two of the beers and were in good condition. Pleasant location with a nice garden. Will go back again.

Fountain Inn, Mevagissey

Eight of us dined in the small first floor restaurant on 27 May and the food was excellent - fish pie, fish stew, steak and lamb chops followed by a strawberry mess. We will certainly go back. The St Austell's beers were fine but a limited range (two on). The bars are small so the pub has character.

2 Jun 2010 10:40

Ship Inn, Pentewan

Lunched there twice during May 2010 with a group of friends. Beers from St. Austell range (Tinners, HSD, Black Prince sampled) were in excellent condition. The landlady and staff were very cheerful, friendly and helpful. Food was well prepared too. Large garden across the road. Would certainly return when next in the area.
