The Victoria, Bayswater

Amazing that a pub so close to a mainline station can be this good.

Always seems busy and the upstairs (as previously noted) is a treat to look at.

The beer was great but we ate there and all agreed the menu and the food they brought us was spot on too.

The Hook and Tackle, Reading

Naff location right next to the IDR, loudish music but the ale was fine and very cheap.

On balance, nothing particularly special but nice to see a pub with cheap ale.

The Elephant and Castle, Whistley Green

Nice welcome, reasonable food and beer.

This was included on the Reading beer festival ale trail.

The Magpie and Parrot, Shinfield

Very friendly landlady who's happy to talk to anyone. Slightly older clientele than the more mixed crowd in the ale pubs in Reading but welcoming.

There is often only Pride on which is a shame but their beer festivals complete with pig-in-a-bun are excellent.

The Waggon and Horses, Twyford

Good traditional pub with good beer, a very friendly landlady, and a lovely beer garden. Oh and Maverick the long haired cat.

The Cunning Man, Reading

Good stop on a walk along the canal from Theale to Reading by virtue of being the, er, only stop. But the beer was alright if nothing special. Disappointing lack of crisps/snacks as already mentioned and it is definitely aimed at the family dining market.

The Retreat, Reading

Great beer; they even have Harvey's at times. It can get very smokey though I guess in a few months that won't be an issue.

It's definitely the beer (or cider) you should go for though as it's not the most attractive interior. But if you're just looking for a place that looks pretty why are you going to a pub?

The Alehouse, Reading

I can't rate this pub highly enough. The beer selection is always amazing and the staff care that you get a pint you enjoy down to letting you taste anything you like and being good with recommendations. It's a real character place and if you've never been you really should go.

The Corn Stores, Reading

I went here for the first time last weekend. Wasn't overly bothered by it as a pub; good to get a sofa to sit in but it is small downstairs and I thought the beer was expensive at 3 for a pint of Pride. It was very smokey too and the smoking paraphernalia around no doubt didn't help. I think upstairs might be worth a visit some time.

The Alehouse, Reading

I can't rate this pub highly enough. The bar staff are interesting and know their stuff. The regulars are friendly and the snugs out the back are great for a quiet chat.

Every time I've been here they have had excellent beers.

I suppose you could possibly mark them down on having a fruit machine. I mean that's precious space for someone to stand and have a drink wasted! ;)

The Hop Leaf, Reading

My second favourite pub in Reading after the Hobgoblin.

Always has good beer and a friendly crowd. Has a bar billiards table so you can watch the students make the rules up as they go along.

Has been a bit smokey in the past and slightly dated seating. Excellent beer though and a nice mix of students and locals.
