The Crown and Anchor, Faversham

Enjoyed my visit a few months ago very much (as always). Well kept beer, good conversation and a great landlord. Sadly I have heard that Les has since passed away. A sad day for everyone who knew him.

Globe Inn, Rye

I visited on a saturday afternoon. Had a decent real ale selection of which I had a half of Goody's from Herne. It was very crowded with many people eating. Does not in my opinion and based on this experience feel very much like a pub but more like a restaurant. If an upmarket full on Gastro is your thing then you may like this place. If you dont then avoid, I shall be.

The Bull's Head, Barnes

Yet another Young's pub ripped apart to turn it into a Gastro. They have kept the Modern Jazz (after over 50 years they didnt have much choice as a campaign was mounted), however this is now banished to a building out the back. The old jazz room which Youngs only soundproofed about 8 years ago at vast cost is now a restaurant.

Thanks Youngs! another triumph to go with the Richard 1 at Greenwich and Coborn Arms in Mile End.

Richard I, Greenwich

Ths was one of my favourite pubs anywhere and had a fantastic front bar. The building is now unrecognisable , Youngs having virtually destroyed everything that made it enjoyable to visit in order to creat anothe gastro. I certainly wont be visiting again.

In the last year three of my favourite pubs, the Richard 1, the Coborn in Mile End & the Bulls Head in Barnes (all Young's) have all been turned into gastro's with their internal architecture ripped out.
Youngs pulled out of brewing a few years ago, their sole interest pubs these days seems to be in selling food. Where will the Youngs tour of pub destruction arrive next.

The Coborn Arms, Bow

I am afraid it isnt a pub at the moment Its shut whilst being rebuilt. It is being turned into yet another Gastro bar. Youngs got turned down once by the council (many residents objected) but as always they went to the secretary of state who overturned the councils decision. In the last year three of my favourite pubs, the Coborn, the Bulls Head in Barnes and the Richard 111 in Greenwich (all Young's) have all been turned into gastro's with their internal architecture ripped put

The Black Lion, Hammersmith

Went there on boat race day. Seemed very disorganised. After being told they would open at 1 (already very late) didnt in fact open till 10 past 1 and then still were not ready to serve food. Also beer prices were extortionately high even by the standards of riverside pubs on boat race day.

New Town Tavern, Colchester

Went in this pub for the first time recently, very pleasent! Both the barmaid and landlord were friendly and welcoming. After having a chat with the landlord about his beers he later gave me a couple of free sample glasses of two new beers he was putting on the next day. Something unheard of wher I live (South Essex). Recommend!

The Odd One Out, Colchester

Fantastic place, worth travelling many miles to visit (i often do).

The landlordkeeps a continually changing selection of well kept ales (recently made CAMRA north east essex branch pub of the year I believe) and usually 4 excellent real ciders (got onto CAMRA'S best four cider pubs in Britain shortlist)

Thats only half of it though, the atmosphere is great, the oddie feels like a pub should feel and the landlord is never less than friendly, he remembered my name after about 3 visits all many months apart!. Orwell wrote about his favourite pub, called the Moon under Water, which contained everything one could ask for from a local. It of course didnt exist, a place that has everything couldn't, but for me the oddie is about as good as it gets.
