Brauhaus Schreckenskammer, Cologne
The Schreckenskammer brewery was bombed in 1943. This 'tap' was opened in 1960 and is little altered since. At the counter is a small stand-up bar with some tables on the street in front. The remaining rooms are in typical beer-hall decor with scrubbed-top tables and sawdust floors. The Klsch is served direct from small casks on the counter. The beer is brewed by Dom and the casks are filled without added CO2. Recommended.

A large prominent early 20c pub with a good brick and stone exterior. Award-winning refurbishment. The interior has been completely restored in traditional style with several rooms and impressive (though all new) bar fittings. Quiet little 'Library' and snug on the right-hand side. Good-looking beer garden with play area. The three beers are from Oakwell, Barnsley - Mild, Bitter and Senior Best Bitter - all at very competitive prices. Excellent boozer. Bus 3 or 20 from town.

One of only two pubs in central Runcorn selling real ale - the other being the Ferry Boat. A very decent pint of Bombardier. Lively karaoke on Saturday nights.

This pub has reverted to its original name: DEVONSHIRE. Modern refurb, no real ale.

This pub has been DEMOLISHED and is now an empty site. Try Wetherspoons across the road.

This was the Manchester Hotel and had a superb Ward's frontage including tiling and leaded windows. It's now all modern. However, it's reliable and recommended for beer, also good sandwiches. The pub is now run by the nearby Brew Company, and their house beers are very good. Bus 53 from town.

The Riverside Cafe Bar, Sheffield
Recommended for beer. The house beer Riverside Pale is from the local Brew Company. Magnificent Ward's art deco windows. Good old photos of local scenes inside. Terrace alongside the river at the back.

Traditional pub with decent real ales. Spot the old Ansells sign painted on the roof, and the Ansells squirrel in the glass in the right-hand room. Garden with play area,

Waggon and Horses, Alfreton
Just been in. There was ONE member of staff behind the bar, but he wasn't serving. He was making coffee. Pity, because they had 5 Thornbridge beers on. Wetherspoons won't make much money if they don't provide staff to serve beer.
