The Crow and Gate, Crowborough

Called at this pub as I have many times over the years.
Disappointed to say that my beer was served in a dirty glass, one inch ring of bubbles on the inside of the glass.
When glasses had to be polished with a cloth it took far longer. With machine washing there is no excuse for sloppy bar work.

The Poacher, Hurstpierpoint

Has little character or comfort. A pub for the lads and hard drinkers. Not somewhere you would take your Mum or your kids.

The Six Gold Martlets, Burgess Hill

Wetherspoons Burgess Hill was formally two empty shops which have been knocked into one. Some effort has been made to add character this new establishment as a ‘local’ with pictures of ‘The South Downs’ and old Sussex.
It’s a long time since I saw conveniences as modern and clean, they really are a cut above what you might expect but I can’t see this area remaining like it for long. I should add that they are up on the second floor so be careful of the stairs. The bar service is good with a good selection of reasonably priced guest ales and the glasses are clean.

But that is as far as it goes. After a good start standards have slipped. In busy times the kitchen struggles to meet demand on quite basic but cheap pub food. The surfaces of the tables and some of the well used seating are generally sticky and the self service table for adding milk and sugar is generally a mess and the teaspoons regularly 'walk'. The staff who serve are pleasant and obliging but piles of dirty crockery are often left on the tables indicating that they are not employing enough people to cope in busy times.

It is a busy place but not somewhere that you would want to recommend to anyone used to better standards of service or culinary skills. It meets demand on the basis of price and it is reflected in the customers it serves.

The Half Moon Inn, Plumpton

I have made quite a few visits to the Half Moon under different circumstances so I can be even handed in my assessment. The service can be good to ‘we have forgotten you are there’
They have a good kitchen, the results are generally good but some of the dishes are more expensive than they should be. Having said that they do use mostly local produce which may even things out.
The range beers are limited but well chosen including a local ‘Long Man’ brew and Harvey’s Sussex.
If you time your visit to when things are quieter and you sit inside you will get the service you deserve. If you sit outside with a full house inside you may well be forgotten about.
In any event your bill might be more than you expect and if you choose wrongly or don’t ask what you will get on the plate you could leave feeling hungry.
So for something quite tasty and easy on the wasteline in a nice location this could be your place.

The Nevill Crest and Gun, Eridge Green

In my opinion for a place to stop for a decent and meal with a nice pint doesn’t get much better than this. You would not be ashamed to take guests there and that for me is a good yardstick.

It is well laid out, plenty of room, still retains some character, good car parking space and pleasant outdoors seating on a sunny day.

On the several visits we have made we have been served pleasantly and not had to wait over long for our meal. An interesting menu and well prepared food. It’s a little more expensive than some but we have not left feeling disappointed and will look forward to calling again

The Gardeners Arms, Ardingly

It looks like a pub but it’s more of a restaurant that serves drinks

Having said that the staff are welcoming, the service is good, the menu inviting and the quality of the food is very good.

It is a shame that you cannot get a decent pint. Someone needs to shoot the brewers at Hall and Woodhouse or they should start to put some guest ales on tap.
Not everyone wants to drink wine all the time and we should be respecting a bit of tradition.

The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield

Speak as I find. When we visited a beer festival had just finished but we were able to sample one or two interesting pints. Unfortunately I cannot say that our food was as interesting. My green Thai curry was tasteless and the rice had past its best long since. I had heard that you could get a good meal. Perhaps if you pick the right thing you might strike lucky.

The Cowdray Arms, Balcombe

A recommended place for a good meal and cheerful service, unfortunately the selection of beers leaves a lot to be desired. A good menu, excellent steaks. Prices realistic for what you get. Large car park, busy road but not noticed once inside and access is good.

The Half Moon Inn, Plumpton

A good friendly place. The pub itself is not large but there is a good choice of seating and tables outside. The emphasis is on food but an interesting range of beers are offered. I visited when things were quiet and I could not fault the service. The menu is imaginative and the food quality is what you would expect from the price, but £9 for an omelette ? Good place to take kids for a run around in the field at the back while Mum & Dad chill out.

White Hart, Henfield

Our last visit to the White Hart for a Mothers Day lunch was disappointing.
We could not book for the time WE wanted and were stuck in a dark corner, although only a third of the tables were occupied. Obviously this is the comfort limit for the kitchen. The staff were pleasant and service was prompt but the roast meal was disappointing the meat was not freshly carved. The meal was not good value.
The beer is well kept but the landlord needs to make customers feel more welcome.

The Victory, Staplefield

Have visited The Victory on several occasions and been glad that I did.
Service has been pleasant, prompt and attentive even at popular times, customers and staff look happy. The food has been honestly prepared, vegetables plainly but freshly cooked, adequate portions and prices are reasonable. Harveys Sussex and Sharps Doom Bar are available and well kept. Access is convenient and parking is good. The location is convenient but quiet and overlooks the village green. There is outdoor seating in a rear garden or in front of the pub. Consistently good recommended.

The Noahs Ark Inn, Lurgashall

A friend recommended this pub for a recent mid week lunchtime reunion and we were not disappointed.

The pub is off the beaten track on the edge of a pretty village green surrounded by medieval timber framed houses from Country Life.

There is a reasonable selection of real ale and the beer is well kept. Inside the pub is welcoming and clean. The menu is interesting; the food is good, but expensive. The staff were attentive and we received prompt service.

The gents is normally a forgotten area in most pubs in this one it is excellently looked after.

If you are picky and can afford this style of pub you will be well catered for. Take care on the approaching lanes as some are narrow and some local motorists are used to having the road to themselves.

The Bull Inn, Mockbridge

On a sunny day this pub makes a good stop if you have kids as it has a large safe garden. Inside is also cosy if its windy. The beer is well kept and the pub is well cared for and clean. If you order food (which is a little overpriced) my advice would be to ask what the waiting time is. At busy times the kitchen organisation struggles and you could have at least a thirty-minute wait, thats unless your order has been forgotten.
If the garden tables are full you could be in for a very long wait.
If you are driving remember you don't need the extra pint to pass the time !

The Devils Dyke Hotel, Brighton

Very sad to report that in a year nothing much has changed.

The weather was delightful last Monday afternoon and my Son and I decided to go to The Dyke Inn for a drink. Our previous experience has not been good at this place but things can change. How wrong we were. Although it was not a busy time we waited for an age to be served.

The server put up two glasses, one of which had a white rime of dried bubbles coating the whole of the inside of the glass. It was quite obvious that the glass was dirty and had not been washed at all, this was refused. The other glass looked cleaner but not by much as clumps of gas bubbles formed on the inside surface as it was filled.

Customers deserve better and it is shameful that places like this are able to make a profit. There is a (public ?) gents toilet which has access from the outside of this inn and has existed there for many years. This place is a disgusting stinking hole.

As a race why do we have such lamentably low standards of hygiene and service ? The best thing about the location is the view and this is free. Dont waste your money or your time in this hostelry unless you are desperate. If you want a sore throat or a tummy upset this is just the place to get it.

The Ginger Fox, Albourne

More cars at this refurbished eatery than I've seen for long time but I would like to know what's on offer before I consider parking mine.
No menue on display outside as far as I could see.
Too many customers from car boot field opposite could make using this road in the summer interesting.

The Devils Dyke Hotel, Brighton

Last Sunday our group walked from the public car park at The Devils Dyke. On our return the pub was literally packed. Why ? Havent people got anything better to do on a Sunday than to crowd into a pit like this ? I know what this place was like in the 60s, very different, the upstairs floor was a restaurant you could have a drink and good meal and enjoy a real view. You can currently do none of these things in this pub.
If a pint and a pee and a breezy trot to and from the car is your idea of a Sunday outing then you will not be disappointed, but check for a clean glass.

The Plough Inn, Henfield

The atmosphere in this good little pub is much improved since the smoking ban. The cheerful and efficient bar and food service continues. The beer is well kept. For the size of the pub there really is a very good choice of food, 3 menues - tapas/bar, main meal and on the blackboard meals of the day. The food is well prepared, good value, served promptly in homely surroundings. If you like real chips with your meal you will not be disapointed with what is served here. Obviously regulars agree.

White Hart, Henfield

Standards still being maintained. Bar and table service obliging. Beer in good condition. A spacious, clean and warm pub. A menue to satisfy most and the food excellent. When busy plate to table time can extend but worth the wait. A good plate of fish & chips is served.
Recommended.

The Vinyard Lodge, Hurstpierpoint

We had to apologise for recommending Vinyard Lodge as a place to stay. Our guests had to ask for toilet paper to be made available in the bathroom. The shower operation was faulty. After giving the chef a the best room, which had been booked, management then tried to overcharge on the bill. If you stay here take your own toilet paper, don't bank on being able to shower and take a copy of the booking confirmation with the room rate. Better still book elsewhere, alternative accomodation is available.

The Vinyard Lodge, Hurstpierpoint

Currently going through a sticky patch. Guests receive an offhand reception. A room booked months ago by our relatives was given to the new chef. Further comment pending.

The Lord Derby, North Warnborough

We stopped for Sunday lunch on route. The pub was full and very busy. We received a pleasant welcome from the very competent young lady serving the bar. My London Pride was excellent. Our order was taken efficiently. We didn't have long to wait and our roast was one of the best. We enjoyed our meal in the garden because all the tables inside were full. Nice clean toilets. Glad we stopped. Highly recommended.

The Wheatsheaf, Woodmancote

No longer a 'pub' but a bistro and a further name change. It will be interesting to see who it attracts.

30 Aug 2007 12:51

The Wheatsheaf, Woodmancote

Neigh, Neigh, If you like your fodder and ale continue west a mile or two. Another candidate for conversion into a private residence. Sad to see how this place has changed. Take care when getting out of the car park, cars coming from the Albourne direction come round the blind corner at a fair lick.

24 Aug 2007 21:29

The Royal Oak, Wineham

Not many places like this left anymore. It certainly has character and a dedicated local following. A lovely old place in a timewarp with an old fashioned publican. I guess if you became a regular you would feel more at home. If want to taste what beer kept traditionaly and served directly from the cask is like then make a stop here. If you want a row of shiny brand labels on the bar and ice on your glass of the amber nectar then this is not the place for you. If you want to experience the way your Father & Grandfather drank go now if, only once, before things change.

The Ginger Fox, Albourne

Going, going, gone ........
I remember this place well over 40 years ago when it was an petrol station and for a pretty petrol station it would have been hard to beat.
I've heard that as a resturant the inside was pretty characterless so I've never felt tempted to stop.
I drove past a couple of days ago and the windows were all boarded up.
It will be interesting to see what happens next.

The Fox, Small Dole

A clean roadside pub which has been skillfully developed to provide sensible parking and eating facilities. The bar was cheerful with a good selection and the both the beers sampled were in excellent condition. Food is served in a resturant area at the end of the bar and at lunchtime this was very busy. We did not have long to wait for our food which was traditional honest fare reasonably priced and tasty. No garden anymore but still suitable for youngsters under control and now with good wheelchair access for the less able. This might be a temporary blip but check your change at the bar before picking up your pint.

The Bull Inn, Mockbridge

It's either keys or cash at this pub. In some you would not be given any option. Avoid any potential problem and pay as you go as we did - what's the problem ?
This pub has a large garden with a back entrance from the car park. I expect the landlord has had a few drivaways. If he let that happen too often they would be working for nothing. In his position I might insist on payment when ordering because even with the current option some jokers are going to find a way of getting something for nothing. I didn't feel insulted when asked for my keys, I just paid up front. Sadly we do not live in a society where everyone can be trusted and we all suffer as a result. If they had lost my keys I would have been hopping mad though.
We had another pleasant stop the other day. In spite on all the menue cards being tucked away somewhere we had clean pint a good bite and spent an hour on the garden patio.

White Hart, Henfield

If you want to try any of the pubs in Henfield start with this one. They serve a good pint and you can get something really nice to eat in civilised surroundings, we were not disapointed. It looked as if everyone was enjoying their meal and left empty plates, I would have been happy to order anything being served. Good access and parking. Plenty of room and still retains character. Good service, patronised by regular discerning customers. The landlord could have looked happier but I guess we all have our problems. Thanks for recommendation on the Sussex Smokie, excellent. Don't confuse the White Hart beef burger with the McDonald's crap that is thrown out on the side of the road. Well recommended but not (in my opinion) suitable for children.

The George Hotel, Henfield

We were looking for somewhere to have lunch, no cheery salutation from the man on the other side of the bar, we were completely ignored. When a female member of the staff served us it was more like she was doing us a favour. There were several pensioners having lunch otherwise the place was empty, not really surprising, perhaps they know something that escaped me. My beer was in very good condition but I was glad to leave and I will not be returning. This establishment would be more successful with better management, it’s well placed, a decent size and has car parking. Not suitable for children.

The Plough Inn, Henfield

A homely pub with loyal core of regulars, good choice of beers, my Harveys was in good condition. Attentive staff, varied tapas menu, tasty cooking and personal service, a bit of a squeeze if more than 20 customers. Impossible to eat in an environment of exhaled cigarette smoke, but you can go into the small courtyard at the back if the weather allows. The smoking ban will make things more pleasant for everyone, including the staff, in little pubs like this. Using this pub is easier if you know where to park.

8 Jun 2007 21:49

The Bull Inn, Mockbridge

We stopped for lunch. I had the guest beer ‘Iron Horse’ which was well passed its best; half a glass was enough for me. I should have asked for Harvey’s Sussex, which was in good condition. My choice of Calzone (an Italian style Pizza pasty) was excellent and my Son liked his Chilli Con Carne and Cobra. The staff were pleasant and attentive. I would have no hesitation in taking children to this pub. Plenty of space. Very clean. Nice garden. Decent car park. Recommended, we will go again.

8 Jun 2007 21:07

The Devils Dyke Hotel, Brighton

The interior has been ‘theme rusticated’, lots of old wood and old clearance furniture. It’s now very dark so you won’t see when it gets greasy. Uninspired heated catering packet food, like a Happy Eater with drinks. A bar snack menu at restaurant prices. Dirty glasses and cutlery with stains. The best thing about the place is the view. Avoid unless you are really parched or want to sit down out of the wind. If you want to search for a knife and fork, be offered condiments that 50 people have dipped into before you and drink out of a dirty glass you will be at home. Some of the staff try to please but they won’t have a job for long. Not the place to take children
