The Burton Bridge Inn, Burton-Upon-Trent

I still go to town every week or so just to visit this place, my favourite pub in the whole area. Beer top class especially Golden Delicious and Soveriegn Gold. Heard from the local paper that they are taking on brewing DBA (Draught Burton Ale)after C*******g dropped it due to falling demand! (mainly due to its non-availabilty in any of their houses, being only intrested in l***r). Cracking pub, ace food, friendly staff.

It's me again for an update on this pub. After 3 sets of managers, a couple who ran the place after its refurb have bit the bullet and signed a lease. I wasn't keen on them before but now they have a stake in the place rather than just a wage, a total change is under way. Landlady's 2 sons run the bar ( Harvest Pale, Pedi, Bass, Doombar, Courage Bitter-rare in these parts and 1 other changing, Black Sheep bitter at mo.Wye Valley Butty Bach next). Stone baked pizza's are superb, Food offers most weeknights, Pizza-night, homemade pie-night etc. Quiz night Wednesday £1 a person each team get a 14'' Pizza of their choice. Everybody very friendly and the busiest it's been for years. They've not paid me for this ad, I just like the place a lot again!

The Wilkes Head, Leek

Read the other comments, can't say I've met the landlord but the girl who has served me on a Saturday afternoon is pleasant. All the locals seem to be members of a serious celeb deadpool. Decent rock soundtrack and Hartington IPA. Not bad for a quick visit, but could do with a bit of a tidy up.

I was the last to review this place a while back. It was extensively and expensively rebooted with the bar and lounge swapped over and was ok for a time but the new licensees were not a friendly bunch, tried to make it too foody and drove away the local drinkers. They got the chop after less than a year. New guy Pete and his chef Dean totally different kettle, welcoming to drinkers and eaters, the lost locals have drifted back and it now feels homely again. Good quiz on a Wednesday with excellent food for a quid entry as well! Beers on Pedi, Bass, Doombar, Bombdr, Castlerock Harvest Pale, Landld etc a fair selection. I am back to popping in regularly for the first time in years.

The Green Dragon, Willington

Things are changing at this place since my last review. Beer has always been good, and you get 20p off as a CAMRA member. The owners have just bought the adjoining cottage and are knocking into it to expand the eating area, moving the kitchen and adding the old kitchen to the bar area. They have also submitted a planning application for a microbrewery to make their own dollop. Good luck to them. In my opinion it was already the best pub in this village.

The Great Western, Wolverhampton

Was recommended to us by a frequent rail traveller, so walked the couple of minutes from the Premier Inn nearby.I could write a long rambling review about the friendly staff, fantastic beer choice, rail memorabilia, decent bogs etc. It is easier to just say this in our opinion is one of the top 10 real ale pubs in the Midlands. Well done Holdens Brewery.

Hogshead, Wolverhampton

Visited for the first time, on a Saturday when Wolves were not playing. we were impressed with knowledgable barmaid who seemed to know the history of all of the breweries' ale available. I had Broughs Springfield and my partner liked the Enville White. Mixed crowd, TV's on without sound (good). Outdoor seating/smoking area tatty but apart from that, worth a visit for well kept reasonably priced beer.

The Wetmore Whistle, Burton-Upon-Trent

Always was a decent pub for live music and Castlerock beers, but please note the landlord has gone bankrupt and the WHISTLE IS CURRENTLY CLOSED UP.(Posted on Feb 24th '13)

Lord Burton, Burton-Upon-Trent

A totally average 'spoons, beer always ok when I have visited, gets full and sometimes rowdy on a Friday and Saturday night as it the usual meeting place for the council estate 'hen' and 'stag' party crowd.Has my normal 'spoons bugbear, never enough staff serving. You get what you expect from this operator, although some are a lot better than this one.

I really don't know what is happening to this place, once the best pub in this village. The new licensees are miserable and don't seem interested in making the pub homely and it's looking tatty and unkempt. Most of the long term bar maids have left, and I have rarely seen the new bloke working apart from doing a quiz on Wedneday. The Dragon beats it hands down for beer qulity at the moment and I've seen many 'Man diehards' drinking in the other 2 village pubs for the first time, and I have gone from a 2 or 3 times a week visitor to 2 or 3 times a month now.Badly needs the rumoured refurb quickly and probably another landlord.Sorry.

The Dolphin, Stamford

Had a weekend in this old stone town, which was pretty enjoyable, and this was one of the pubs we frequented on both days.It has changed hands about a year ago,and the new licensees Steve and Marion are very welcoming. They have a lot of live bands on,mostly managed by the barman Jacob who is also a nice guy. Very good pint of Grainstore Triple B when I was there, along with the usual Wells and Youngs brews. Although having never been there before, I can vouch for the fact it has improved since its last review, and we plan to go back later in the year. Usual collection of eccentric locals who seem to live in the bar, but a good atmospere. Can't comment on the food as we didn't sample any, but it was a pub that made us want to pay a return visit, a rarity in this day and age.

The Malt Shovel, Shardlow

About 20-30 years ago was a legendary Pedi pub, with an old guy who had ran it for years, and it was always packed at weekends.Don't really like the layout now, foody orientated.Lots of seats outside but not much room inside if it starts to rain. It's also got a dirty great TV screen up.Average beer.Supped up and walked across to the New Inn.

5 May 2012 14:26

The New Inn, Shardlow

Not been in here for about 17 years.Totally changed inside, liked the small bar area just inside the door.Decent Bombadier,my Mrs and me had a chat with some friendly local builder boys about the virtues of motorhoming, good service, food looked OK.Will definetely be in there on our next visit to the campsite on the marina.

5 May 2012 14:22

The Navigation Inn, Shardlow

Went in the other Saturday,on a tour of Shardlows boozers.Waited ages to get served, late afternoon.Barmaid was apologetic, but it wasn't her fault she was working on her Jacksy.Hobgoblin 3.50 a pint? Won't be back.

The Gravity, Burton-Upon-Trent

This place is now called 'The Goodridge',a Smith & Jones outlet. While its night time persona is probably unchanged,(Bud swilling chavs staring at the the big screen TV's) in the afternoon and early doors it ain't so bad.I get off the bus just near here and have been in several times. The young bar manager serves the real ale in it's matching glass, and keeps some of the tankards in the fridge if you prefer your ale extra cold.(I'm not a fan of room temperature stuff myself) Bombardier,Jennings Cumberland,Morelands Best Bitter and Green King IPA Gold, none more than 2.25 a pint, have all been available lately. If you are just after a quick cheap pint before strolling up to the nearby Coopers or Devy,it may be worth a look.

Plaza, Rugeley

I'm not going to be too critical, because I have been in worse Wetherspoons, but I have to say although the beer was ok(Tried Ruddles and Thornbridge brews),I was not keen on the layout.I'm a standy-up drinker and there are never enough ledges, shelves and high tables in any of their pubs. Most tables occupied by the usual all-day Wetherspoon type chavs.(tracky-bottoms,baseball caps, lager etc)

1 May 2012 17:22

Vine, Rugeley

Went in search of this place while in the town after reading about the supposedly legendary Bass.Bit of a run down pub, very untidy, but a homely local I expect for the nearby residents. The Bass is very good after all.

1 May 2012 17:15

The Yorkshireman, Colton

Stopped overnight at the farm campsite next door in our motorhome, and popped in here on the walk back from the town.Strange little place, very food orientated, but with a small bar with a couple of bar-stools.(Thats my gert sorted then)Didn't eat as we had already done so,but the place was very busy early doors so the food must be good. The Blythes Bagots Bitter at 2.50 is absolutely spot- on,not one I'm familar with, but one of the best pale beers I have tasted in a long time.Ended up having 3 pints of it and will be back, might even buy a meal next time.Very friendly owners and staff as well.

The Coopers Tavern, Burton-Upon-Trent

Just like being in your grannies front room, how this pub has escaped a makeover is a blessed miracle. There can't be many boozers like this left.Hardly any place to sit or stand when its busy as well as poor toilets and no food to speak of.However, you don't visit this pub for its comfort or ambiance, you go for its amazing choice of cheapish beers and ciders, mainly straight from the barrel.A trip to this quaint museum piece that should be compulsory, especially if you like a pint of Bass.

Devonshire Arms, Burton-Upon-Trent

Always visit this pub when in town, and have been going in sporadically for 20 years.Nothing needs to be said about Burton Bridge beers,to me they are the best there is,and Golden Delicious served here is the nectar of the gods. The Devi has a welcoming atmosphere, and you can take your pint across the road to Balti Towers,or order food from the cafe nearby to eat in.BB Brewery are a bit different from the mainstream and are to applauded for it,The Coopers is 2 minutes walk away, what more could you want?My only beef is probably a trivial one,but as a standy-uppy drinker, why has a table and chairs been sited right up against my favourite leaning pillar and shelf in the back room? Are they trying to tell me something?

The Green Dragon, Willington

Totally transformed from the pokey local it was a few years back.Wasn't impressed initially, but the owners have gradually got rid of some of the lowlife that spoilt the place previously.Mainly food orientated now,but they have kept the bar area.Has the best choice of beer in the locale, with Doombar and Pedi plus 2 guests, often including Burton Bridge beers. Some of the staff are the usual giggly girls who sometimes seem to be having a competition to see who can make the biggest crash throwing empties into the skip under the bar (a pet hate of mine)but it is generally a friendlier atmosphere than I expected. Not eaten there myself, but it seems to be doing well on the food front.Incidentally,Bespoke Inns seem to want to drop the 'Green' from its name and just call it 'The Dragon'.

The Barrels Alehouse, Berwick upon Tweed

A pub I only visit once a year(living 200 miles away)We always have a night in Berwick on our annual trip to Scotland, and always make a beeline for this fantastic boozer, usually on a weekday night.Great selection of beers from all over, friendly atmospere.as well. The bar is easily opperated by 1 person, but the design is such you never wait to get served. Its also the 1st pub you find when you walk over the ancient bridge from the Spittal side of the Tweed. One of my favourite top ten pubs in the whole of Britain.

10 May 2009 20:47

The Wetmore Whistle, Burton-Upon-Trent

Love this place at the weekend, well out of town away from all the youngsters, live music every Saturday night.Castle Rock Harvest Gold is my particular tipple, but theres a good range available.

13 Feb 2009 21:01

The Burton Bridge Inn, Burton-Upon-Trent

An absolute gem of an old fashioned boozer.Brilliant beer(I like the weaker Golden Delicious)just 2 rooms downstairs, open fire, cheap prices, friendly staff.I just wish it was open later at night at the weekend, but being a bit quaint and behind the times,is part of its image.

The Flowerpot, Derby

I first went in this pub 30 odd years ago when it was just a poky local on the ring road.Since it was opened up after the ex-tyre depot next door was aquired its become a beer and music mecca.I like the fact that it still has a pub atmospere with an incredible always changing selection of ales. You can still sit and haxw a quiet drink even when theres a few hundred crammed in the back bar watching a rock band.Just about the best pub on a Saturday in Derby for us oldsters, anyway

13 Feb 2009 20:51

Leaping Salmon, Berwick upon Tweed

We visit a lot of Wetherspoons around the country, and they're usually pretty good. There are exceptions, and this is one.On our last visit it was untidy, with a pile of cleaning stuff on one end of the bar,and a box of cloths, rubber gloves etc on the floor next to our table, masses of glasses waiting to be washed. This was only on a Thursday afternoon, not a busy period.Got fed up waiting to be served, only time we've ever left a JD's after only one pint.Definately could do better.

2 Feb 2009 20:34

Green Man, Willington

I've always liked this pub,and I've been going in for a good few years.Licensees are pleasant, food ok Jennings good,Pedigree acceptable.I thinks it's more the atmosphere were it scores. The bar understandably attracts a younger crowd and has a pool table. At weekends the lounge can be a bit like gods waiting room, but it's a typical friendly village pub.Free quiz on Wednesday is worth a visit as well.

2 Feb 2009 20:26

The Blessington Carriage, Derby

Having not been to the Bless for at least 15 years I was stunned by its change into a student dive. The 2 pints we ordered were completely flat and undrinkable. When I asked the barmaid(about 15ish, ring through her lip, attitude etc)if they had any other real ale,I suddenly realised by her blank look that she didn't have the foggiest idea what I was talking about. In the end we settled for the 2 most expensive bottles of Newkie brown I've bought in a long time.Couldn't wait to get out, full of noisy drunken kids even at 8.30.If you're over 25 find somewhere else!
