The Rising Sun, Smithfield

Agree with wellinformed's comments; the Sam Smith's in here is way above the normal standard.

The Bricklayers Arms, Beckenham

I'm amazed that the Bricklayers has remained open all this time. We've lived in Beckenham for 3 and a half years and it certainly hasn't improved in that time.

The Lion of Vienna, Bolton

Sorry, that should have read sitting down on the floor.

The Lion of Vienna, Bolton

I remember the Lion from when I grew up in Heaton (over twenty years ago). My abiding memory was going in there for the first time (my mate and I were both over 18, honest), sitting down because there was no space and we were both half-cut. The landlord said "stand up lads, this isn't a doss-house".

The Ship, Croydon

A couple of points looking back at the reviews. The beer has improved greatly since I last wrote on here and, yes, whoever it was who wrote about the wizard and the cat- either it's true or we both had the same alcohol-soaked delusion!

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

Great pub to visit, once all the usual crowd (as others have said, City boys and their hangers-on) have gone home or when it's nice enough to sit outside. The interior is amazing and well worth a look. Great range of beers from all over the place.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

Food isn't great, the beer is Sam Smith's, but I still love this place. It is very atmospheric and is well worth a visit just for all the nooks and crannies. The staff do a good job to be fair.

The Coach and Horses, Beckenham

I quite like the Coach and Horses, personally. Having said that, I tend to go in when the Rugby is on, so it always has a lively atmosphere and people are very friendly. I'm not sure if it's always like that.

I think they had Courage on when we last went in. I don't remember there being a great range, though.

The Jolly Woodman, Beckenham

Not a bad pub, but we weren't bowled over by it. It did feel a little cliquey, but it may have just been a one-off. Beer was fine and so were the bar staff in fairness. As others have said, it is pretty noisy.

The George, Beckenham

The beer is decent (Greene King IPA comes to mind as being good) and they often have Harveys on. However, it is quite a cramped pub, and is particularly crowded on weekend nights. The 12am closing time might have something to do with that. Not the friendliest place in the world, but then that applies to too many pubs these days....

O'Neill's, Beckenham

It's an OK place to go to during the week, but I would avoid it like the plague on a Friday or Saturday night; the atmosphere is really "moody".

The Coach and Horses, Beckenham

Not a bad pub. It's a great place to watch the Football and Rugby and doesn't seem to attract the more aggressive crowd. It doesn't seem to have the greatest range of beers, though- I seem to remember that it was Courage when I last went.

The Ship, Croydon

I'd echo redjim's comments. It's a great place if you love rock music (which I do) and like it loud. The beer is OK, but not brilliant. The DJ will play requests if you ask them nicely!
