Borelli's Cafe Bar and Restaurant, Farnham

This place is slowly going downhill. When you have the big name brasseries opening in town you need to up your game. Instead you are met with clueless staff who can't spot customers waiting to be served, poor food (the good chef left!) and an overpriced wine list.

The Nelson, Farnham

Under the ownership of Tom this pub has greatly improved. The staff are friendly, the food is good and the ale is fine (although still room for improvement - not a great fan of Andwells!). If you are in Farnham then this is worth a visit!

Queens Head, Farnham

I've been in a few times since my last review. In recent months there has been a strong smell of bleach as you walk in but the staff seem to deny there is a problem. I guess you would probably get used to the smell after a while! Good selection of ale and the food looks reasonable but it still doesn't hit the mark for me. Usually nowhere to sit as large tables are usually taken up by one or two people and the smell just puts me off my beer!

The Slug and Lettuce, Godalming

During the day this place is a crche and full of new mums drinking coffee and taking up most of the pub with prams and other baby related paraphernalia. You end up feeling about as welcome as a drunk at a kids party if you order a pint! On the plus side the bar service is fairly quick and if lager is your thing then this place rocks.

Cherry Tree, Rowledge

Dropped by recently for pint of IPA. Used to live in Rowledge and when this place was run by Von it was quirky but had identity.

Now the outside is looking shabby and the inside seems to have been redesigned by a 2 year-old.

Given the location (expensive village!) you would expect something better.

The Anchor Inn, Lower Froyle

After ordering a pint and a small glass of wine I thought they had also sold me shares in the pub after charging me over 9. This pub is smart, clean and seems well staffed but I feel sorry for the locals if they have to stump that up every round. Being part of a small chain I guess they rely more on the one-off visitors (usually well off families with loads of noisy kids) rather than good honest drinkers.

On the plus side they serve local ale (TrippleFFF).

May go back just for the stunning views out the back but I need to save up my pocket money first!

The Bat and Ball, Boundstone

Dropped by recently for a pint or six the other day. Six ales on and all were of good quality. Didn't bother with the food (very rarely do in any pub) so can't comment on this. Staff are friendly and efficient as always. Only problem is running the gauntlet to the gents through the family room and the hundreds of kids blocking the way. Haven't these people heard of childminders if they want to go out? That aside I am looking forward to my next visit. Scores an 8 for beer alone.

The Albion, Farnham

Drove by the other day and it looks to be shut. End of review.

The Horns, Crondall

Recently dropped by this pub to see what it was like. Initial thoughts are that it caters more for food customers than beer drinkers as you are met by a number of reserved tables. Only two ales on (Ruddles & Olde Trip) but both were of a good quality. Didn't try the food (roasts are 10 by the way) but from what I could tell these were extremely popular with other customers. Staff were very efficient and friendly. I feel that this pub deserves to do well and I will probably drop by again in the summer but only if I am passing. For a food pub it would score well but for a drinkers pub only a 6.

The Nelson, Farnham

Following my last bad review (Feb 09) I recently decided to drop by this pub again. Pleased to say it has improved a great deal with four ales on tap (Landlord, Winchester, Alton's Pride & Hobgoblin). Having sampled all four the quality was very good. The interior is back to being more aligned with that of a pub rather than a restaurant and the service was fine. Unusually for a town centre pub it is now a relaxing place to have a drink, meet friends and read the papers. Didn't try the food as it wasn't being served at the time of my visit. I'll be going back.

The Barrowboy and Banker, London Bridge

Not a bad Fullers pub. Decent decor and a great range of beer. Staff were also efficient. I would probably go back if I was passing.

14 Dec 2010 13:28

All Bar One, Tower Bridge

Went in there on a Saturday afternoon. The place wasn't busy so you would expect efficient service but this wasn't the case. After ordering our drinks you could see them waiting on the bar for an age. Food wasn't too bad and the Doombar was fine (unusually so for this type of place). Bit anoyed that when paying the waiter he was shoulder to shoulder with me expecting a big tip. Not likely!

Won't go back.

14 Dec 2010 13:25

The Waverley Arms, Farnham

Popped in for a pint before getting the train. Good beer (had a nice pint of TrippleFFF moondance) but the interior is hit and miss. I'm no expert but having a pool table taking up most of the bar area as you go in doesn't give the best impression of a warm and welcoming pub. The other part seem to be full of out of control kids. Each to their own but I doubt I will be back unless my train is delayed.

The Ball and Wicket, Heath End

Wow some strong opinions about this pub. Probably hidden agendas and sour grapes. Surely if you dont like somewhere you just move on rather than have an ongoing hate campaign.

A more constructive review as follows:

1) Staff, locals and landlord are friendly and welcome newcomers to this pub. No doubt if you cause trouble or upset the landlord then you will get barred but doesn't this apply to every other pub in the UK? The atmosphere can also be a bit off when the pub is quiet but this applies to everywhere including town centre pubs.
2) OK the ale isnt to my taste but other drinks are available.
3) This should be a pub serving good food rather than a restaurant and a pub as two separate entities. Why not merge the bar area and restaurant together and then the food will take off (either with the old chef or a new one).

Despite some reviews this pub is what it is. If you want the best real ale selection in the world then this probably isnt the pub for you. If you want somewhere to have a drink in friendly surroundings then this local pub is fine.

The Ball and Wicket, Heath End

Further to my earlier postings (since removed) the quality of the homebrew is still poor. Please, please, please give in and order in some Hogs Back, Triple FFF or some other real ale....NOW!!!!

Haven't tried the food yet (more popular than the homebrew by the looks it) but I will once the beer is sorted!

27 Apr 2010 17:46

The Shepherd and Flock, Farnham

Spent a sunny Saturday afternoon at this place. If you can get your head around being stuck on a roundabout this isn't really a bad place to visit and watch the cars go by (very fast!). Good selection of beers and lagers and the food was fine but it my opinion nothing special. Perhaps this was my fault as I should have ordered something more exciting than a burger!

The pub was very busy the afternoon I visited (a good thing for a pub in this day and age) so it did take a while to get served so be warned.

That aside, this pub is worth a visit if you are passing.

27 Apr 2010 17:34

The Barley Mow, Tilford

The only asset this pub has is the location. Rather than line the landlords pocket my advice is to bring your own booze and have a picnic on the green.

26 Oct 2009 13:44

The Sun Inn, Bentworth

Having seen this pub advertised I thought it worthy of a 15 mile trip to get to it.

The beer was in good form and having sampled the Itchen Valley Pure Gold and Stonehenge Pigswill the trip was worthwhile. The staff were also efficient and welcoming.

Luckily I didnt want food as the major drawback of this pub is that every table inside (and one outside) were reserved. I felt like I had gate crashed someone private birthday celebration! Must mean the pub is popular (which cant be a bad thing in this day and age) but annoying if you are only passing through and you want to sit down.

Worth a visit just for the ale but book first if you want the luxury of a seat!

10 Aug 2009 17:00

The Blue Bell Inn, Dockenfield

Not a bad place to visit as a decent selection of real ale and food looks good (although didn't bother on my last visit).

Still needs some money spending on it (garden especially) but I guess this will happen in time.

20 Jul 2009 14:03

Ye Olde White Hart, Hamble

Looks to be a decent Fullers pub. Popped in on a Saturday night but too busy and nowhere to sit or stand.

20 Jul 2009 13:46

The Bugle, Hamble

One of the better pubs in Hamble as a decent selection of ale and a good menu. Prices are reasonable given the location and proximity to some very expensive yachts. Half of the pub looked to be a restaurant and without a booking there are only a few tables available for the casual drinker. Mainly full of loud weekend sailors in Musto jackets who have spent all day shouting at each on a boat only to then continue to do so in the evening! Worth a visit if you are passing.

20 Jul 2009 13:43

The King and Queen, Hamble

Worth a visit if you are passing. Good selection of ale (Doombar was top drawer) and reasonable prices. Got served quickly but perhaps the bar staff could also spend a little less time chatting to each other/friends and perhaps collecting glasses and wiping the tables down (had to peel my arm off the table when I went to leave!).

20 Jul 2009 13:13

The Punch Bowl, Mayfair

Went in here just before Christmas and I have to agree with the other reviews, IT IS EXPENSIVE!!! I would just about stretch to 3.90 for a premium lager but not a bulk standard Best. Service wasn't too good either as some p*ssed fat head with a wad of cash was getting all the attention. Worth a visit just to see what all the fuss is about but other than that probably best avoided.

11 Mar 2009 14:03

The Prince Alfred, Upper Hale

Been in once but never again. Empty restaurant and only a few locals makes this place depressing. I'm all for supporting local pubs but as there is a choice round here I would prefer to drink in the Ball & Wicket which is much more welcoming.

27 Feb 2009 16:20

The Seven Stars, Farnham

The nut house of Farnham.....avoid.

27 Feb 2009 16:01

The Coach and Horses, Farnham

Can sometimes be interesting to sit outside and watch the world go by (and choke on the exhaust fumes). This place needs to define what it is. Is it a pub or a restaurant? Currently fails on both counts and I'd probably choose Borrellis.

27 Feb 2009 16:00

The Marlborough Head, Farnham

Good place to a have a few lagers and watch the football. Don't expect much else from this pub though.

27 Feb 2009 15:53

The Black Sheep Brewery, Masham

Came here for the tour but was a little disappointed. You only get a half at the end and not a pint! This is more of an end of visit cafe then a pub but the beer is OK. Black Sheep rules!

27 Feb 2009 15:42

The Slug and Lettuce, Farnham

This place is OK and as some of the previous reviews can prove, it's pretty harmless. The food and service is good and there's a good selection of lager and ales. Don't expect much else though. Unless this place is busy and has a buzzing atmosphere I would avoid as it's pretty characterless being a chain pub.

27 Feb 2009 15:27

Queens Head, Farnham

When this pub was taken over by Fullers I was expecting great things. The decor improved, the clientele improved (generally) and the beer improved(although the Pride has been looking off a few times which is rare for a Fullers pub) but there is still something lacking. It just doesn't have the feel of a proper pub. Maybe the tables are too big or the fact that it's in the centre of town make it less personal. I want to like this place but given the choice The Hop Blossom wins hands down. Worth 6/10 for effort though.

27 Feb 2009 15:16

The Chequers Inn, Well

The vine covered area at the front makes this one of the few pubs you can sit outside all year round. Great for muddy dogs! Beer is OK but Hall and Woodhouse would not be my first choice of brewery. Service is always fine but expect more diners than drinkers in this place. Worth a visit just for the fresh country air.

27 Feb 2009 15:03

The William Cobbett, Farnham

As a student this was pretty much the only pub I would go to. To its credit it hasnt changed over the years and still remains popular and attracts a good crowd on a Friday and Saturday night. On my last visit there was a good selection of ale on offer but I was slightly put off when my arm became stuck to the filthy table. Good place to drop by for a pint or two just for old times sake but probably best left to the students to enjoy. Long live the Cobbett!

26 Feb 2009 14:21

The Nelson, Farnham

I'm all for supporting local businesses but to compete with the chains the Nelson has to deliver something over and above. Probably best to take the critism on board and improve rather than just rant on!

25 Feb 2009 14:01

The Barley Mow, Tilford

This pub is great for the occasional visitor. It has a good location and the look and feel of a traditional pub. I went in recently and enjoyed a couple of pints of Tribute but didn't eat so can't comment on the food. I say occasional visitor as I think I would get fed up with the wait to be served if I went in every week. I appreciate that it gets busy in the summer but when I'm the only one standing at the bar and I still get ignored it becomes a joke. (Note to landlord - for once in a while please put your wine down and serve BEHIND the bar if someone is waiting).

18 Feb 2009 14:11

The Nelson, Farnham

If he were alive today I think Lord Nelson would rather have lost his other eye than look at the shambles this place has become. Been in a couple of times over the years and everytime something has let this place down. Either the beer is off. the staff are off or the food is off. Well in future I'm off....to another restaurant.

Given the location and history of the building it makes sense to convert it back to a proper pub with a food option. We can only hope........

17 Feb 2009 14:04

The Hop Blossom, Farnham

One of the best pubs in town. Being a Fullers pub there is the usual selection of ales on tap and the London Pride is spot on. The only downside is that it can get very busy and there never seems to be enough bar staff on. Worth a visit if you can fit in!

17 Feb 2009 13:44

The Sandrock, Boundstone

Went to this pub the other day and was very impressed with the selection of real ale on offer. The TripleFFF Moondance was spot on. This must be a great pub to have as a local but it was almost deserted at the time I visited (early saturday afternoon). No doubt Friday and Saturday nights are busier but to the residents of Sandrock/Boundstone - use it or lose it!.

17 Feb 2009 13:31

Borelli's Cafe Bar and Restaurant, Farnham

Friday and Saturday nights aside (too busy) this is not a bad place to go to have a few drinks. It's smarter than most of the other places in town and serves a good selection of wine and premium lagers. For the ale lovers amongst us there is London Pride on tap but chilled to the same temperature as the lager so don't bother. The owner also needs to work on his customer service skills. A smile costs nothing.

13 Feb 2009 13:38

The Bat and Ball, Boundstone

THEALMIGHTYALA is right. At weekends the pub does seem to fill up with new parents showing off their kids to each other. Most don't seem to drink, they take up three or more tables and the various prams (or three wheeled buggies as fancied by most) become an obstical course. In the summer the childrens playpen becomes louder than Led Zeppelin. That aside, I like the pub generally. Friendly staff and the beer is good with up to six pumps on the go at any one time. Food is average but the ploughmans settles the stomach rumbles.
