The White Horse, Lindfield

Latest manager left, apparently, because he wasn't getting enough time off. After some months of closure the place is now being gutted and turned into an Indian restaurant, so I'm told.

The Stand Up Inn, Lindfield

Sunday afternoons always tended to be a time for mothers and toddlers, but in former days there was a lot more room for the buggies!

Since I last commented the new manager has left, to be replaced by another who has come and gone, to be replaced by the current version. I called in after a long drive from the North but forgot that I had been told last week that the gas had been cut off! Not yet restored and portable heaters all over the place. I think that it's high time for Enterprise Inns to let this place go and let someone competent have a go.

I called in briefly as I had been told that the new management had reduced the prices. This is true, but Guiness is still cheaper in the red lion. The new management seems very positive and customer friendly. I shall be back.

The pub appears to be changing management again. That's probably what comes of not doing your Market Research properly, offending all your old customers and charging 7.95 for a sandwich.

The Stand Up Inn, Lindfield

It's open (but now only from midday). The bar is now in the centre of the main room, the decor is now very much "Corporate Image" rather than individually quirky and a nasty trip hazard has been exposed after taking down a small protective balustrade. It looks as if the bar is too near the fireplace for a fire to be safely lit in winter, which, given that two of the radiators have been removed, isn't going to make it any warmer. There are now 7 real ale pumps, but only 3 beers were actually on when I called. The only ciders available are Addlestones and Stowford Press. No Perry. Prices have increased more than considerably-4.35 for a pint of Addlestones, as opposed to 3.30 for Weston's Old Rosie in the old pub. Guinness is now available at 4.15 a pint and there are enough lagers available to cater for any amount of lack of taste! The pub now has three doors which seem to be haphazardly open at the landlords inclination-one of these has a high step which makes it unsuitable for people with mobility problems and the other newly available door has a huge gap at the bottom-good in Summer, not so good in Winter. Food (Thai) will not be available for about a fortnight. My initial impression is that the establishment has been changed from a drinkers pub to a meeting place for the young, trendy "yummy Mummys". Let's hope I'm wrong.

OK. I was wrong. The word is that it will open at 1900hrs. Contraindications are that the workmen are still there, on the other hand the windows are being cleaned!

I thought the July 5 opening date was a bit optimistic. Shopfitters, etc. still all over the place.

Possible good news. Pub is scheduled to reopen 5 July, although the shopfitters had better get a move on. Still selling real ales and ciders, and branching out into Thai cuisine. I'm not sure that this is going to work out as another of the village pubs tried it a couple of years ago. It didn't last long. New management will have to work hard, but I wish them well.

Sadly, this lovely pub will close tomorrow evening. It's future is unknown. This has been brought about by the inability of the brewery and the premises owner to come to an agreement on the terms of a new lease. As a result, with only four days notice, the village has lost its best pub, the two managers are homeless and a total of ten people have lost their jobs. Additionally, of course, a considerable number of vilagers and others from the area have lost their social centre and a large number of local bands have lost a regular venue. Gentlemen, I hope you are pleased with what you have achieved!

Thirstybob, I'll have you know that we invented "quirky" in Lindfield. You only had to look around you and see the other lunchtime customers! As for the Dark Star specials, they usually last about four hours on the pumps so you have to be quick. Never mind about the ham,egg and chips-it's bad for you. Stick to Lou's home made pasties and chili Scotch eggs. Yum!

The Crown, Turners Hill

Although I've lived in the area for 30 years, I have never been in this pub before last night when I attended a retirement party. The numbers were large and the thirst considerable. Nonetheless, the staff coped heroically and I never had to wait more than a minute or so for service (with a smile). Normally a still cider drinker, I opted for bitter when I saw St. Austell "Tribute" was available. The beer was cool and well kept. I shall make a return visit shortly for a fuller evaluation-especially as a bus runs directly from the door of my local to the door of the Crown!

The Partridge, Partridge Green

My wife and I visited last Friday lunchtime. We were welcomed cheerfully by the two ladies behind the bar. I had pint of Guinness, not having noticed the barrell of cider lurking on the bar and my wife (driving) had a coffee. Unfortunately, only instant was available. We then bumped into another chap on a day out from our usual local and he was impressed with the quality of the beer (Partridge, I think). My wife and I had some lunch which I thought was a bit on the expensive side although the ingredients were of good quality. I was mentioning my opinion in my own local a couple of days later and another regular mentioned that he had eaten at the Partridge recently and felt that the fish pie and peas consisted more of peas than fish pie! However, with just a few tweaks in the kitchen and a few more ciders available I have every hope that this will turn into a really good pub.

Well said, spectrumisgreen. You might have added that the two managers were both ill over the Christmas period but still working longer hours to cover for the loss of staff. Of course, anyone can have a bad experience in any establishment but as someone who drinks there five days out of seven I can tell you that i am more than content to go on doing so.

Happily, the pub has reopened. On the other hand, drinks are still expensive and food prices are now astronomical!

This pub is now closed, awaiting new management.

The Wheatsheaf, Cuckfield

Called in last week for lunch. Excellent meal, and my wife was particularly pleased to be offered fish unadorned with batter or breadcrumbs. Sadly, no Pedigree but some progress as they had a real cider on handpump. very well worth the excursion.

The Snowdrop, Lindfield

Apparently, this pub has reopened, concentrating on food. No first-hand reports of quality standards yet, though.

The Blue Ball Inn, Lynmouth

My wife and I stopped here (not for the first time) a couple of weeks ago. I thoroughly agree with all the positive comments of the previous reviewer and had read these before booking. There seemed to be a far better choice of beer available when we visited (although I did stick with the Tribute) and there now seems to be a substantial "daily specials" menu available with a further veggie choice for both starter and main courses. For wine drinkers, there is a wide choice at very reasonable prices. The staff and local customers are all very welcoming and we shall certainly visit again.

Two Bridges Hotel, Two Bridges

This is more of a hotel than a pub, but the bar is open to everyone and if you want to frink your pint in the lap of luxury, this is the place! The service is pleasant, the sofas and armchairs deep and comfortable and the beer, Dartmoor Brewery "Jail Ale" in this case, was in absolutely excellent condition, although, as you might expect, a little more expensive than prices in this general area.

28 Apr 2010 09:55

The Royal Oak, South Brent

My wife and I stayed here last week. The room was very good indeed, although I didn't appreciate the finger-wagging recitation of the House Rules before we got in there. We ate in the pub every night and the dood was really good and very reasonably priced, as were the wines. The Dartmoor Brewery "Jail Ale" was in fine condition and very enjoyable. Although the place looks unprepossessing at first sight, I would recommend ale drinkers to cross the threshold. It gets better on the inside!

18 Apr 2010 16:19

The Pack Horse, South Brent

I popped in last week for a very quick beer. Unfortunately, I didn't notice the Real Ale pumps and ended up with a pint of indifferent Guinness. The atmosphere was good though, with a number of locals enjoying a drink and the landlady was very friendly. I might give it another chance when I'm next in the area.

18 Apr 2010 16:10

Union Inn, Newton Abbot

I was there last week and it seemed to have a good quantity of local drinkers present. The beer quality was very good and prices were nothing like the horror story experienced by one contributor-in fact, I thought they were quite cheap. I will certainly go there again.

Jetta-steady,gal! I should give up the tea and take to the Old Rosie if I were you. As to the fantasies produced by the non-alcoholic bevvy, the tall young man benefits far more, and far more deservedly, from having his buttocks kicked hard rather than fondled and your bosom would come to less harm if you gave it a stiff rub down with a wire brush rather than getting entangled with bearded men at the bar!! Keep taking the chocolate.

The Crystal Palace Tavern, Bath

Visited briefly on March 6th and found the atmosphere very pleasant. The beer (most importantly) was well kept and I enjoyed my stay. I will definitely recommend it to friends.

And I'm in training for the next beer and cider festival (August Bank Holiday Weekend)!

Ramsay's Real Ale Bar (at the Buckingham Hotel), Buxton

My wife and I have stayed at the Buckingham twice this year and I have been absolutely overwhelmed to find well-kept beer in a hotel bar! I agree that the decor is a bit bare and my wife is still cursing the management for not having any port but it's definitely a good place for a beer drinker.

25 Aug 2009 09:22

The Kings Head, Buxton

A really nice pub and one which I make a point of visiting whenever in Buxton. The beer is excellent and the food seems to be well received. Confession time-unlike the local people, I like drinking fron a dimpled jug. Not only did a nice young lady find me one of the pub's only two examples, but remembered me the next day. What service!

25 Aug 2009 09:12

The Wheatsheaf, Cuckfield

Very nice pub. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the food is excellent and well priced and I was served the best pint of Marston's Pedigree that I've ever had in Sussex. I know that the pub has had a poor reputation at times in the past but it is now really worth a visit.

25 Aug 2009 09:04

The White Lion, Ross-on-wye

This is a lovely riverside pub, with real ale in very good condition and food available in the bar or the (non-smoking)restaurant. For good weather there is a large garden right by yhe side of the River Wye and a good view of the picturesque toen of Ross-on-Wye

9 Oct 2006 10:39

The Crown and Sceptre, Ross-on-Wye

I was a bit taken aback by the two previous comments as I've never had a bad experience here, even though I only visit twice a year. Having paid another visit last weekend I haven't changed my good opinion of the place, except that it's sometimes a bit smoky. Beer is excellent as usual and two of the local "muppets", far from staring, actually took care to move so that I could watch the football.

9 Oct 2006 10:27

The Red Lion, Snargate

I visited this pub with my wife (not a great lover of such places) but she was absolutely enchanted with the place and enjoyed listening to the landlady's reminiscences. The beer (Goacher's)was absolutely first class and well worth the long drive from Haywards Heath. Long may this pub thrive.

9 Sep 2006 09:53

The Stand Up Inn, Lindfield

I agree with the other reviews. Although not a Dark Star fan myself, there are always guest beers, ciders and perry. They also held a very successful beer festival over the August Bank Holiday. Incidentally, it isn't really miles from nowhere-20 minutes walk from Haywards Heath station or,during the daytime, there are frequent buses from near the station. Some even stop right outside the door.
