The Brown Cow Inn, Clitheroe

Stopped here on a visit to Lancashire and found it to be ok for a pint. Not much atmosphere and had the feel of a local's establishment. Not many ales on offer but were of decent condition.

The New Inn, Clitheroe

Just back from a visit to lancashire for the first time and was happy to find this pub. Excellent ales and well kept. The place has a cozy and comfortable feel to it. We chatted with others visiting the place and came away with the impression this is the best pub in town. I tried all four ales on at the time and each was equally fine.

If you find yourself in Clitheroe, this is the first place to stop for a pint. You will likely be there longer than you planned. I know I did, just wish I had more time to spend there.

The Coronet, Holloway

Stopped in last weekend for a quick pint after visiting the area for the day with family. We usually can find something decent in a JDW in the ales category but this wasn't one on the day. Settled for Deuchars IPA which was o.k. Decor is what you would expect from a place that was originally a theater that has a pub shoved into it.

The Sanctuary House, Westminster

Have to agree with some of the comments with regard to tourists- as we were some who stopped in last week for a pint. The Fuller's range is nott one of my faves but any port in a storm, as they say.

The Chiswick Bitter, however was one I had grown fonder of in past visits, so I ordered that. Of course, it had just run out (it was 11:30 in the morning) but I was told they would put on another if we could wait. We did and the barman told us we would receive the freshest pint of CB you can get. Well, maybe that was the case but it was very disappointing compared to others I have been served. The staff were very friendly and seemed eager to please and food coming out looked pretty good. We didn't stay for that but I would likely give the place another try when back in this part of London again.

The Old Bell, Fleet Street

We stopped back in last week after previous London visit in 2012. Happy to report we enjoyed the place and the ales a second time, also had a bite to eat and found food and service met our expectations again. Kudos to Adam behind the bar, who is a pleasant guy and enjoyed talking ales with us USA cask ale fans.

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

Stopped in for a few last week on a ondon visit with family. Had a nice pint of Norfolk Gold, which was a new one for us. I cannot recall others on offer at the time but all the ones we tried seemed to be in good condition. The decor is very nice inside and we were glad to have found it when we did.

North Nineteen, Holloway

Very nice neighborhood pub, worth the trek from central London. We were a group of real ale fans from USA and spend a good deal of time during our annual trips to the UK in various pubs. This one I found searching for places that might serve a particular ale (Skinner's Betty Stogs) I have loved on previous trips. These folks came up on the search and my group decided the trek would be worthwhile. I am happy to say, this place was great and their ale selection is varied and all were well kept. Food and service get high marks too- thanks, Remy!

If you find yourself in this part of London, I heartily recommend a visit. I know I will be back there.

The Kings Head, Bayswater

I have been visiting London for years and know this area pretty well. There have never been any amazing pubs in this neighborhood because it's mostly tourists that frequent places like this. As a result, they don't have to try very hard and this place is a prime example. We stopped in one night recently on a crawl. Place was not super busy but the b**** behind the counter kept us waiting to place orders for fifteen minutes while she flapped her gums to someone in the corner. She had her "duty manager" pin on, which means it's her duty to exercize indifference to paying customers when she has an important conversation going on. She was abrupt, rude and should find some other hole to crawl into so she can stop wasting peoples' time. Don't bother wih this one, walk across Queensway to the Lord Alfred or further on to the Porchester on Westbourne Grove.

The Bridge, Topsham

We visited Exeter last February from the USA and this was one fine place! So glad we found it after wandering around trying to find it for some time. The barman was a very genial chap and we had a nice chat with locals in there for lunch. The food was great and we were given a tour of the place and its history. Wonderful place, nicely kept ales and great atmosphere. A pub I hope to revisit one day.

The Royal Oak, Exeter

I spent a week in Devon for my birthday this year and this place was a highlight of the long trip from the USA. Had a couple of pints of Skinner's ales, which I found quite nice and a well kept Tribute also on offer. The locals were keen to chat and my wife and I had a fine afternoon here. The location is fantastic, along the river- can only dream of how beautiful this place is on a summer's day. Oh, to be back in England!

20 Feb 2012 02:51

The Centre Page, St Pauls

Stopped in this weekend and found the beer only fair, the staff even less so. The woman behind the bar was too busy doing nothing that she couldn't be bothered topping off my pint and charged me 3.60 for the privelege. They won't see me here again.

20 Feb 2012 02:46

The Old Bell, Fleet Street

I stopped in here recently, during a couple of free days in London. There was no one else in the place on a rainy Saturday afternoon so I felt lucky to find myself here. I was welcomed by the bar man and we chatted about the history and about real ales. I had a fine pint of Tribut, that was easily one of the better pints I've had of this brew, including some in Devon days earlier. The staff were so very friendly and I really came to love this pub and felt stupid that I had missed it on previous visits to Fleet Street. I will definitely visit this place again and hope to spend more time there.

The Haunch of Venison, Salisbury

As an avid Anglophile who has visited Salisbury a couple of time over the past three years, this place doesn't disappoint the real ale fan in me. Nice, cozy atmosphere, a roaring fire on my last visit in Feb. 2009 and a fine pint (or three) of Courage Best, well kept. One of the better pubs in town for certain and a must visit for those of us from far away..

26 Feb 2009 02:44

The Kings Head, Salisbury

Stopped in two years ago during another Salisbury holiday visit and wasn't impressed. We went in twice last week and both times the ales were excellent and the food was as well. Ales kept changing but all were quite good (Bread of Heaven, Doom Bar, Stonehenge) quality.

Staff were attentive and friendly. This is one of the better JDW locations I have ever been to and recommend it for good pints and good prices.

16 Feb 2009 20:59

The Friend at Hand, Bloomsbury

This was the first pub I ever visited in England back in '97, so it always held a sentimental spot with me. I stopped in yesterday with family before going home to the States and it's still an okay pub but not like it once was. Real ale selection was disappointing (Bombardier and LP) but the food was quite good and enjoyed by all. Staff were friendly enough and attentive. I will probably go back in every time I find myself in Bloomsbury, even if it's for sentimental reasons and not for a really good variety of ales.

16 Feb 2009 20:48

The Black Lion, Bayswater

I have been in here on previous London visits and found it decent if nothing else could be found. This past weekend I stopped in with family and was looking forward to a pint after a long walk through museums and Hyde Park. We went in and found GK and LP- oh well, not any of my favorites but...

ordered an LP and found it was off and the only real ale was GK. Ok, I guess but disappointed anyway. We ordered a Ploughman's lunch as a snack, as we missed lunch and didn't want to spoil dinner. The lunch was quite nice, with excellent cheddar, ham and fruit. The baguette was microwaved, so it was like a steamed hot dog roll. All in all though, the food was the best part of the visit.

16 Feb 2009 20:38

The Swan, Bayswater

Stopped in last weekend with family after a day out in London. We've been by in years past and never felt compelled to spend any time here. I now know why- the beer was mediocre at best. Not an LP fan anyway but this was even bad for them. We're not locals but would suggest to any other tourists to go elsewhere if they were looking for a decent pint in London.

16 Feb 2009 20:31

Queens Arms, Salisbury

Really nice pub and one we managed to miss two years ago during our last visit to Salisbury. We will definitely come back to this one- nice bar staff and well kept ales. It is one of the best pubs in town and we're glad we found it this time around.

16 Feb 2009 20:17

Wig and Quill, Salisbury

Very comfy pub on a cold day when we stopped in. The beers wre fair but nothing great in my opinion. My wife loved the Stowford Press cider to her usual Strongbow, however. The barmaid was friendly but we didn't feel inclined to hang around very long.

16 Feb 2009 20:09

The New Inn, Salisbury

We spent our UK holiday back in Salisbury, as we really enjoyed it two years ago. We stopped in here this trip as we missed it last time. The food was decent during our visit and the ales were okay. Badger was on offer and it's not a favorite of mine. That said, it was pleasant enough for a quick stop and staff were friendly and provided good service.

16 Feb 2009 20:07

The Albion, Winchester

This was our last stop during a recent crwal through Winchester, as it was close to rail station for our departure. The place was crowded on that late afternoon, as it was Wednesday night after work. We enjoyed the crowd in there and had some interesting banter with a local who had spent time in the States, where we were from. We listened to his take on all things he chose to share with us and he also showed us his manifesto when he assumes world power. The pints were tasty and we had some laughs- isn't that why we love to visit Brit pubs so much?

16 Feb 2009 19:59

William Walker, Winchester

Went in here based on other posts and were not disappointed by the food quality (and yes, the pizza was very good, especially for the UK) or the ales. Their staff were very helpful with local advice and the patrons themselves were quite interesting in many respects. Enjoyed the two teenagers who dropped in to get drunk and didn't much care what kind of liquor got them there. Watched them order shots of Sailor Jerry (was that Captain Morgan's cabin boy?) and later have a few pints. Not sure if they accomplished their mission to get trashed but we did by the end of the day. If you are in Winchester, this is one of the places to go.

16 Feb 2009 19:49

The Old Vine, Winchester

After a couple of mediocre pints during our crawl, we were delighted to find a good pint of TT Landlord here. A pleasant enough stop for a few but nothing exceptional about the place otherwise.

16 Feb 2009 19:45

The Queen Inn, Winchester

We stopped in after a long hike through Winchester during our vacation in England. Staff seemed more preoccupied with starting the fire in the fireplace than serving anyone. Beer was okay when it did arrive. The place was quiet, as it was early afternoon and only other patron left before we did. Staff were grazing on food at the bar, oblivious to us. Not a bad place, just not special. There's a beer garden outside so it must be nice on a warm evening.

16 Feb 2009 19:40

The Wykeham Arms, Winchester

We really enjoyed this place- it has a nice, comfortable air about it. The staff were very friendly and we chatted up a few of the regulars and their dogs. Good quality ales that tasted well kept.

16 Feb 2009 19:36

Old Gaol House, Winchester

Stopped in here last week during UK holiday trip. We stopped in here first thing in the morning for a pint before our day trip/crawl through Winchester. A pleasant enough place for a couple of pints, the locals and staff were friendly and offered suggestions for other pubs in the area. Doom Bar and SA Gold were decent. Would stop in here again next time in Winchester.

16 Feb 2009 19:33

The Punch Bowl, Bristol

We found this a decent pub with friendly service and a nice menu, although we missed our chance to have lunch here. Too bad because the food coming out looked really good with large portions. Service was prompt and friendly, the pints were reasonably priced. We had sveral pints of Courage Best each. I would surely come back here on another visit to Bristol.

16 Feb 2009 19:27

The Stag & Hounds, Bristol

My brother stopped in during our annual pilgrimage from the USA. We were looking for real ales we hadn't sampled before and found Otter Bitter and another called Gem. Both were nicely kept and the place seemed pleasant enough. We stayed for a couple of pints before moving on. The only thing that pushed us out was the insipid hip-hop soundtrack coming through the audio system.

16 Feb 2009 19:23

Deacon Brodies, Edinburgh

Had a good time in here on a recent day trip to Edinburgh. Staff was friendly and the place was filled with locals and tourists. Nice decor inside and convenient to the station and the castle. I will be back-

19 Oct 2008 15:01

Ensign Ewart, Edinburgh

I went with family this past Feb. and marked my birthday in Edinburgh. We had a great time and found this pub quite convenient to the castle. We stopped in for a late lunch and a few pints. We ordered a few pints of Calendonian 80 and Deuchars, both of which were fine and served by friendly staff. The food was good too- had a pizza, my brother wanted to try haggis. We enjoyed sharing all of it and found the haggis quite tasty. On my next visit to Edinburgh, I wouldn't hesitate to return here.

19 Oct 2008 14:57

Portland Hotel, Chesterfield

On an annual trip from USA to Chesterfield, I missed this place on past visits. Decent enough pub, cheap pints and okay food. Had a few pints of Marston's Pedigree with a mate. Good enough, if you like Marston's but I found the ale selection disappointing on my visit. All in all, you could do worse though.

19 Oct 2008 14:50

The Great Western, Paddington

By the time I got to this place, I was pretty buzzed. It was close to my hotel so I dropped in for a pint, as I spied TT Landlord on offer. The place was absolutely empty and the barman was leaning against it, asleep, holding his newspaper. I woke him up, ordered a pint and waited to see when I would be joined by another customer. Drank my pint, still no one came in and decided to go back to hotel and crash. The pint was okay and I'd probably give this place another try next time I get to Paddington area. I'll bring a friend along.

19 Oct 2008 14:37

The Fountains Abbey, Paddington

I've visited this place numerous trips to London over the years and always considered it reliable, if nothing else. Last time I stopped in the ales tasted sour and metallic, the place was noisy and the staff pretty indifferent. I have had some good pints here before, so maybe it was an off day. If you're in Paddington area, you can do worse.

19 Oct 2008 14:31

The Royal Exchange, Paddington

I heard so much about this place and have missed it on past visits to London, I decided to seek it out last month. I was a bit disappointed, as the selection of real ales were limited to Hoegaarden and Brakspear. Oh well, I had a pint and chatted with the barman a bit. The atmosphere was decent enough, nice cozy local. I just wish the ale selection was bit more extensive.

19 Oct 2008 14:27

The Euston Flyer, Euston

The posters warning of thieves operating in the area are to be noted. My wife had her purse stolen here and the staff were about as helpful as their command of the English language. Beer is okay, food fair and priced like a London pub near a station full of transients would be. If you need a pint really badly, try O'Neills down the street and hang on to your wallet.

19 Oct 2008 14:21

The Blue Bell, York

One of York's best pubs, TT Landlord was fantastic. The place is very small but you can be assured of a fine pint served the way it should be. My only wish is that they had a branch location in the USA.

19 Oct 2008 14:16

The Golden Fleece, York

We returned to York this Feb. and were happy to see the Golden Fleece again and enjoyed some well-kept ales served by friendly staff. I only wish it wasn't 3000 miles away.

19 Oct 2008 14:12

The Maltings, York

Clearly a pub for those that enjoy real ale. On our secind visit to York this past Feb., we sought this one out and were quite happy we did. Easily one of the best pubs in York with a great selection of ales and ciders. Black Sheep Bitter was excellent on our visits- great pub!

19 Oct 2008 14:06

John Mulligan, Dublin

One of the best pubs I have ever had the pleasure of drinking a pint in. The Guinness here is probably as good as it gets anywhere in the world. A must stop when you go to Dublin.

Slainte!

10 Feb 2008 03:17

McDaids, Dublin

Always on my list of great pubs in lovely Dublin! Staff keeps the pints coming although it does get crowded quickly. One of Dublin's finest for sure.

10 Feb 2008 03:15

The Carpenters Arms, Windsor

We liked this pub every visit to Windsor. Cozy atmosphere, right near the castle, good range of ales during our stop there. Friendly staff was attentive too.

10 Feb 2008 03:11

The Allsop Arms, Marylebone

Wandered in here during a London visit and found it a pleasant place for a few pints and the food was good too. I'd definitely go back if I found myself in that are again.

10 Feb 2008 03:08

The Rutland, Chesterfield

I love this place and visit it whenever I am in England. Excellent, well kept ales (TT Landlord is usually there)and the food is good value for money. It's the best pub in Chesterfield, without a doubt.

10 Feb 2008 02:56

The Bold Forester, Mansfield

A fine pub and friendly landlord (Neil) makes everyone (including this Yank) feel at home. I visit this pub everytime I travel to the Midlands and it's always got some fine real ales to enjoy. Food is good too- when in Mansfield, I highly recommend it!

10 Feb 2008 02:52

The Anchor and Hope, Salisbury

A really nice cozy pub with friendly staff and some well kept ales on tap. During our visit we really enjoyed a guest ale from Cornwall, called Tribute. It was a recommendation by the woman behind the bar and it was easily one of the best ales I have ever had in England- superb! If you;re in Salisbury, it's a great place to hoist a few pints.

10 Feb 2008 02:39

The Old Ale House, Salisbury

A fine pub we enjoyed several times during a visit to Salisbury in Feb. 2007 The food was fair, nothing special but good nevertheless. Good selection of real ales during our visit.

10 Feb 2008 02:36

The Euston Flyer, Euston

Stopped here in Nov 2007 and service was adequate, beers fairly well kept. Not a great place though- unless you enjoy having your pocket picked.
