The Lands End, Charvil

Sunday, 17th Feb 1.40pm
Pub nicely busy with diners. No one waiting at the bar so was surprised that we were ignored! No cheery welcome! Finally a "yes mate" ordered beer and crisps and sat down. What surprises me about this pub is the myriad of home made notices stuck up everywhere telling you not to do this that and the other! (i particulary enjoyed the sigh for the gents as the arrow directed you right behind the bar servery!) we declined to eat here as the toilets were disgusting! Pee all over the floor, yet more notices, dust dirt and cobwebs everywhere! If the toilet (that you can publically see) are this filthy; what's the kitchen going to be like?

Stopped off at 2pm on Saturday 22nd Dec, with my wife and 2 boys, 7&10. they sat on the dining area whilst i went to the bar to order. whilst waiting i overheard two guys in their 60s talking. The rude langauge and racist topic they were using was appalling even to me! but to hear this in a family pub at lunch time was pretty bad! Now these two guys were standing at the bar having this discussion with staff walkiing past them; yet not a word was said to them by anyone! FFS!

4pm pint. One other in pub. short fat lady behind bar eating chips. Licked her fingers clean then asked me what i would like! i should have said for her to wash her hands but i didnt. I asked "what time do you serve food till" then left. Returned a few days later was served by someone else. Grumpy! Beer was poor, far too cold. Doom Bar!

The Castle Inn, Corfe Castle

All previous comments are fair i guess. Trying to eat your meal which is squashed in between the two bar hatches with a dozen people around you is challenging! BUT it is the best pub in corfe for nice service, good food, good beer!

The Scott Arms, Kingston

October half term: Service just right. Ringwood good. Food: Sunday lunch. i thought it was expensive at £13 a pop but then it's all about supply and demand: the place was packed, the food was served in a nice manner, but didnt look a lot to eat. however the food was superb. Great taste texture and quality. The meat was super, the veg and spuds great. The sticky toffee pudding was awesome. Nice chap pwns the place and table checked us a couple of times but in a nice way: he meant it! No false smiles. One minus comment; returned a couple of days later for a beer and despite standing at the lower bar for a few minutes with staff coming and going , no one acknowledge us until we were served. A hello, someone will be with you shortly would have done.

3.15 for a pint of Pride!!! Locals Bar now a dining room - no where to sit as the only seats available by the bar were taken up and all the other seats are dining tables. What a shame the place as turned into a resturant! I sat outside and the noise from the kitchen was awful! Lots of shouting, swearing in english and eastern european - if they are behaving like that preparing the food then i wont be eating there. Also a RAT was scurrying around the bushes - i know its rural but the kitchen door was open. Had a pint and left. The place used to be buzzing with local drinkers but no more... i suppose the money is in the food but at 3.15 a pint then i think the money is in the beer!

Old Waggon & Horses, Newbury

"Under New Management" "Come in and say hello"

12.10 Monday

We went in. We stood. We waited. Eventually a chap arrived carrying a plate of pies. Had half a Ringwood. Bit old, not worthy of a second but not bad enough to return.
No one in when we arrived. 4 when we left.
Bizarrely they dont sell bottles of wine only single small ones.
Whole place smelt of paint and only visible food was said pies.

The Lock Stock and Barrel, Newbury

12.40 Monday
Good friendly welcome from girl behind bar.
2 other people in pub.
Had half a pint of Fullers Seasonal ale (forget name) very nice.
Looked through menu with wife - worked out eventually that 9 or 10 3/4
meant 9.00 or 10.75 and realised why the pub was empty!!!!
Bread was 3 1/2!!!! (3.50)
We left.
I am sure that pricing like this is not allowed as there was no indication as to what unit they were referring! Grrrrrr!

Hog's Head, Newbury

Walked in to this pub at 12.05 today. Four people sat at a table and 1 person stood waiting at the bar. My wife walked off to use the loo. I stood at the bar. The barman was busy walking up and down making coffee from one of those big machines. It looked like he was on 3 of the 4 he was making. My wife returned from the loo. We looked out of the window at the canal. We waited. He made coffee. We waited. We left! No acknowledgement. No "Good afternoon, be with you in a couple of minutes". Nothing. Well if you can't be bothered to speak to me in six minutes that I am stood 6feet away from you then I can't be bothered to spend my hard earned cash with you!
About six real ale hand pumps - only London Pride on! No idea what it was like though.... I wonder if he has made those coffees yet?

Bankes Arms Hotel, Corfe Castle

Popped in for a sneaky pint whilst the kids were busy at the station. Impressed by the prompt acknowledgement on walking into the bar - good to be loved. Anyway ordered a Ringwood Best and very well kept it was too. 2.80 a pint - ok for around these parts. Stood at the bar chatting to the bar man inbetween him serving a steady flow of customers. Previous reviews comment on expensive prices, well people have a choice and judging by the amount of people eating in and out when i arrived it couldnt be that bad. Moved onto the Filly @ 3 a pint and exited to the garden with a menu. Agreed with wife and children on food and went back down to the bar. Two groups placing large food / drink orders which the barman dealt well with. Placed my order and was informed beforehand that there would be a wait as many orders had gone in. Fine as it was a nice day and the kids played in the garden. Food was excellant Soup (mushroom) 3.95, kids fish & chips 4.95 and I had mixed meats and olives. Very nice but at 8.95 2 overpriced I would say? A very nice time had. One negative comment? As I walked through for the loo all the tables in the upper bar were empty of diners (it was nearly 3pm) but about 6 tables were piled high with dirty plates and glasses> But it was a lovely day, its half term. I think they did well!

The Greyhound, Corfe Castle

Returned with family post Fox (see that entry) doom bar ok, excelant welcome, nicelyserved at bar but then... an hours wait for food. we only chose 5 starter dishes and only 4 turned up! Luckily we were in no hurry! Bigger groups around us waited even longer. Food was adequate. Nicely presented. Disappointing to see Brakes delivering - what is wrong with local suppliers? Or am I being unfair to Brakes? Would we go back? I wouldn't hurry. Sorry.

The Fox, Corfe Castle

Agree with pubquisitor entirely. In for lunch today, 5 of us. Miserable reception from landlord, despite my dad trying to fire up a conversation! Timothy Taylo's Landlord - flat, old, sour. Lemonade thrown into a glass. no offer of ice or lemon. Sat in garden, furniture in very dubious state, and decided not to stay for lunch if beer is kept and served so bad why the hell should I give my hard earned money for food too? See Greyhound review for what happened next...

Bankes Arms Hotel and Country Inn, Studland

First in at 11am today - in all my cycling lycra - nice greeting from young lad sweeping up outside and inside there was somone actually pulling beer through all the lines - a welcome site as no one likes the first pint. Had a Purbeck beer - disappointing really as it had only come from next door. . . Returned at 4pm post bike ride and had a Titantic. Improvement on purbeck one but a whopping 3.30 a pint! I asked for some crisps and the girl serving said "we only have tie rills" I think that is Tyrell's dear... oh well never mind!

The Gun, Keyhaven

Agree with nick the flick. Breezed in one lunchtime. "are they your kids?" yes... well through there then" why I asked? "Dont have to give a reason" well I should have said well i dont have to stay here and left but i wanted a beer. Ringwood - not brilliant. Landlord is a miserable bugger!#

WHY PAY 3+ for poor service, welcome, and beer? Pubs are going to close ....

20 Oct 2009 19:27

The Greyhound, Corfe Castle

Twaites ok 2.80
Doom Bar - not sparkling taste wise 3.10!!!!!!!!!!

Tooooooooooooooo expensive

The Square and Compass, Worth Matravers

I have never had the same beer twice at this place. Take it for what it is. usually good beer. Yuk food and more fool you if you pay 3 for a horrid microwaved pasty - but this is a pub for beer drinkers. Think it is getting a bit "Chelsead"
There were loads of people watching "Hell Drivers" there last night. I kept thinking I must not ask "what's the five pointed star on the wall for" keep off the moors, stick to the roads lads...

Surprized by reviews on here. Been here 5 or 6 times over the summer for lunch. Always have a fish platter - and it is always the freshest fish and great value. True, did have to wait an hour or so once, but was told that when ordered and it was packed so only fair. Usually a good selection of ales. and usually well kept. Returned one once as near the bottom of barrell and was cheerfully replaced with another one without any excuses. Will continue to go there. There is no point complaining at the end of a meal if something is cold - complain straight away - nicely and get what you expect and pay for.

Wheelwright Arms, St Nicholas Hurst

Good choice of 8 Real Ales - very friendly welcome on a Sunday evening - children made very welcome. Not the cheapest but beer was good. Spoilt slightly by the (illegal) smoking shelter right by the side (main) entrance door.

The Bull, Sonning

This pub is a must for well kept beer - have never had a bad pint! But take a full wallet! 3.25 for Red Fox - 2.05 for lemonade! Makes a trip out with the kids expensive! Or do as I do - kids not allowed in the bar area (resturant ok) so we always sit outside - and take lemonade in cans with us. We have been known to take our own sandwiches too!

Good beer - far too expensive! Yet we still go back, but not as often as we would!

The Jolly Farmer, Hurst

Popped in for a quick lunchtime pint with my wife. Friendly welcome from rather bemused landlord in tracksuit and slippers! GK IPA very average - would not have a second. Old Speckled was vinegar and went back, Abbott accepted as felt a bit sorry for the guy - most of it watered the lawn! Pub smelt of stale chips. It has been 20 years since I last went to this pub: it could well be another 20 years till I return. What a shame- what a missed opportunity!
