The Boat Inn, Melton Mowbray

Always make a point of going in here on my (frequent) trips to Melton; as others have said, you couldn't find a more welcoming, cosy pub; Laura & Mick have really made something of the place; lovely atmosphere (warm real fire in winter) and well kept ales plus Laura's selection of fine single malts.

The Holly Bush, Hampstead

Seeing the old Benskins sign brings back memories; always a great pub; was in here earlier this week for the first time in yonks and it's as good as ever...

The Spotted Horse, Putney

I'm not from around these parts, but I found myself in Putney in July and stopped in here for a pint and some lunch; didn't see any rats thankfully, but thought it was a comfortable relaxing place to spend a lunchtime; not too badly priced for London either.

Sheffield Tap, Sheffield

You won't get much better than this; brilliant beer selection; if you're changing trains at Sheffield, be sure to drop in here!

The Rose and Crown, Chesterfield

Can't praise this place too highly, since it was taken over by the local Brampton Brewery. Has all the Brampton range, beautifully kept; lots of room which is handy as it gets jammed at weekends.

The Lamb Hotel, Ely

Ok-ish as a pub; average Greene King beers; food is of decent standard and the staff friendly and do their best, if a bit hard-pushed at busy times. Infinitely preferable to the Minster!

The Cock Inn, Leek

This place has obviously changed drastically again since the last review [2 1/2 years back]. Now taken over by new micro brewery Joules [reviving the name of the pub's original brewery] and given a serious 'traditional pub' makeover. Lots of fuittings and furnishings from the old Joules brewery. When I was there a few days ago, the very friendly barman explained that the new Joules Brewery isn't quite up-and-running yet, so I'll have wait to see what their ale is like; in the meantime, always at least three other real ales, no 'smooth' though if that's what you're after. I arrived just as a disappointed customer was leaving having been unable to get a pint of the aforementioned chemical soup. Bad news for her, great news for me.

Anne Of Cleves, Melton Mowbray

Good beer choice and well kept too; spacious. Not too keen on the food and they only seem to do a full meal; I asked for a bowl of chips but they wouldn't do it; no problem getting that nearby at the Crown though!

The Navigation Inn, Nottingham

Love this pub; perfect place to spend a warm summer's day, sitting outside, watching the narrowboats navigate their way through the lock and the occasional heron strolling aboyt the canalside. Bank's beers well kept, friendly barstaff, not bad at all.

Barley Mow, Leicester

Been visiting this pub on & off for 20 years, whenever travelling to & Leicester by train as it's close to the station. Hasn't changed much in that time; well-kept Everard's + guest - good pint of White Horse today - always a good place to relax; take the point about the sofas, which seem to have strayed in from a different boozer and yes, as my partner pointed out, it is something of a 'lads' pub, but worth a visit if you've some time to kill before catching your train; also handy for a pint before a meal in Halli, the excellent Indian restaurant two doors up.

Newmarket Inn, Nottingham

Recently re-opened; the new owners are making a sterling effort to turn what had become a bit of a dive into a decent pub. Two or three ales [Deuchers & OLd Speckled Hen when I was last in, both well kept, also aiming to add a good range of wines. Bar staff helpful & enthusiastic. Give it a try.

The Royal Children, Nottingham

After a few visits, this place has grown on me. Good selection of well kept ales; friendly landlord who knows his beer.

The County and Station, Matlock

The Temple Hotel, Matlock Bath

Well worth the walk up a winding hill. Excellent ale; friendly staff.

The Princess Victoria, Matlock Bath

Ghastly. Stroppy bar staff; first beer ordered was undrinkable & had to be [reluctantly] replaced. LLoud rubbish music. Very grotty.

The Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield

Amazing pub; excellent range of real beers; lovely beer garden too. A bit out of the way but well worth the trouble to get there...

The Broadway Cafe Bar, Nottingham

Always liked this place; friendly staff, decent range of beers; not entirely convinced about the refurb. Lots of long refrectory tables; everyone sqaushed in together. Upsatirs bar is a bit soulless and if you want a draft beer, you have to buy it downstairs and take it up. On the bright side, they've just introduced a curry night; 9 for a curry plus pint of beer or glass of wine; well worth it, but come early as it gets very hectic.

The Vat and Fiddle, Nottingham

Always found this an excellent pub; never had a problem with bar staff; ale choice & quality can't be faulted and inexpensive too.

Clock Inn, South Normanton

Best pub in Normanton by some way; good range of ales; bar staff always friendly to me [only been served by female ones though].

The Waterfall, Derby

Only tend to go in on match days so my view is conditioned by that; has a great atmosphere on a Saturday afternoon & I usually go in after the match and watch the Prem live game. They have Tiger and now Adnam's Broadside on tap & both up to good standard.

The Flowerpot, Derby

Ties with the Brunswick as best pub in Derby

5 Jan 2007 12:37

The Brunswick Inn, Derby

Second to none for choice of ales and quality. Can't think of a negative thing to say about it.

5 Jan 2007 12:29

The Alexandra Hotel, Derby

Good beer choice & well kept; service could be better though

5 Jan 2007 12:27

The Derby Tup, Whittington Moor

Not much to add to what others have said; excellent beer drinkers' pub; great choice; friendly staff and a real fire too...

The Keans Head, Nottingham

One of my favourites; excellent beer, not too dear IMHO; friendly staff and they have music some evenings

4 Jan 2007 18:40

The Turf Tavern, Nottingham

Travesty what's happened to this pub; was a proper little 'local' right in the city centre; full of character; will be a real loss
