The White Hart, Bishopsgate

Been coming here for a few years, good selection of well kept Real Ales, bar staff pretty average for the area - Management though is very good - keep a well stocked cellar and knowledgable about their Ales. Food here is typical pub grub but well cooked and served nicely.
Recommend esp. to Real Ale drinkers
Just a quick note to the mulled wine/cider brigade - well worth a try to (obviously seasonal)
Only downside - Ladies toilets downstairs are not always the best - sometimes this can be down to the user, we know - but in that case should be checked on a more regular occasion - Come on Ladies, the loo's do flush! - Weird but this seems to be a constant for this pub :(

The Magpie, Bishopsgate

Love this place - Bar Staff always helpful and happy to suppy a sample sup! Plenty of seating - But then I only go in on our irregular Real Ale jaunts on a Saturday (Husband uses the Magpie on a regular occasion during the week when it can be packed to the gunnels)
Ale kept well, easy trip down the alleyway back to Liverpool St Station - toilets clean - bar staff friendly - Management great! - Plenty of Ales on offer - What more can you ask for :)

Dirty Dick's, Bishopsgate

Dirty Dicks, hmmm, gimmick pub, pricey, double brandy & coke and pint of Youngs Gold, 11.25 - compared to the 7 pubs we had visited in the district where we paid an average price of 7.55!
Dirty Dicks = Dirty Robbing Barstewards!

The Gun, Shoreditch

Just an average pub for the area - pleasant enough bar staff - average Ale, pint of Deuchars. Pleasant surroundings - mainly original features. We stayed for one drink, mainly because it was busy & there was nowhere to sit comfortably - One gripe, Disabled facilities were blocked by a table & 3 chairs - not really the done thing. Would recommend that previous posters who were unhappy with the service give it another go - maybe they have had a staff change since their experiences, who knows!
If I had been rating against the Golden Heart (also Trumans) down the road, The Gun would have scored a 10!

The Golden Heart, Shoreditch

Rudest woman behind the bar (older 'lady' - heavily 'made up' - wouldn't give her name) - We entered yesterday around 5pm intending to have a drink - I walked around the bar to see what Real Ales were on offer as my husband availed himself of the facilities. I was amazed when the Barmaid - who was in the middle of serving another couple demanded to know whether we were going to order drinks - I said that I was going to have a Brandy & Coke and that my Husband was a real Ale drinker - I didn't know which one he wanted, but that he would order for us when he returned - She then went mad and accused me of coming out of the Market and using their toilets (the Market, by the way, has it's own toilets!) - I explained that this wasn't the case. By this time I was both annoyed and embarrased - I asked whether She was the Licensee - She referred to herself as Manager and said that we could not have a drink and that we had to get out! Quite annoyed, still, that She treated us in this way - We are a middle aged couple - smartly dressed - certainly not in any way deserving of that attitude - Would heartily recommend that anyone using the Market did go into this Pub to use the toilets - As to have a drink here is certainly not conducive to a good time! We will be writing to the Brewery to complain as her treatment of prospective customers is nothing short of disgusting - On reading other reviews it might seem that She was playing to the gallery - Certainly she reeked of alcohol - Shame really that the Pub is in such a prime location and obviously has a healthy turnover because of that location - I wonder how long the Brewery would have kept her there if it wasn't the case. Unfortunately this lady believes in her own press - big mistake.

The Bull, Hockley

Unfortunately this place needs a Management injection, the real ales are a bit hit and miss (bar staff on the whole polite and helpful) unfortunately I would have to agree with other reviewers, the Manager here, is not open to any critisism, (food cold, under/overcooked was always ok when it left the kitchen - standard reply given over the last two years) his second in command, a rather surly young lady, is in dire need of a management/people skill course, dismissive of her colleagues and referring to them at times as 'monkies' to her 'organ grinder' (not even tongue in cheek)
Tables are old and unfortunately not cleaned as well as they could be, check out the routed tops, full of old food and candle wax.
In my opinion the food is not up to the price expected to pay - who wants powdery 'smash' when mash is advertised!
On the whole this place could be an absolute gold mine for the right management & chef, unfortunately being part of a chain is not always for the good - a definate aura of 'do enough to get by' - doesn't encourage regulars!
