Red Lion, Ashington

Went here again recently and...oh dear it's gone right down hill i'm afraid. Tables not cleared and covered in old drinks and and empty glasses, screaming chavy kids. More importantly was the price of the tastless drinks. We had 2 large glasses of rose and a pint of carling and a pint of peroni...20! WTF the Peroni was flat so I took it back and got a pint of Amstel instead which I thanked the barmaid for and then just before walking away with my pint she said of I need to refund you the difference, Peroni is 65p more expensive a pint than the Amstel, that make Peroni 4.60 a pint..........yes you heard correctly. 4.65.....

I wont be going back to this pub ever again!

I have changed my opinion about this pub. It is under new management. The fellow who I presume is the landlord seems really friendly and is a nice bloke. But we went there for the quiz and its been taken over by a new fellow. I have never taken part in such a drab and boring quiz in all my life. The questions are just so boring, oh yes and on the 2 occasions that we attended the quiz 4 of the answers were wrong, I mean saying that the band "Pulp" were formed in 1993......er how about 1978! anyway I wont be going back to this pub again as its fairly dull and the beer isnt that great, the harveys was flavourless and warm. Its not worth the journey from Steyning.

I wonder what happened to the old guy who did the quiz before he was a really nice bloke.

Ha ha thats quite funny. I am not actually an employee of the pub, if I was I would possibly vary my name a bit, dont you think. Come and meet me if you dont believe me! I work in Hendon north London for the NPIA.

I just like the pub, and don't think that some of the reviews it gets on here are fair, I think they are just locals thats maybe dont like that sort of pub. They like there pubs to be old and dark and rather smelly.

I don't get these last few negative comments. I recon they are just from another jelous pub. (Pathetic) The screen for the kitchen is quite a good idea, lets you see the food being prepared and shows that there is nothing dodgy going on with the stuff that you are about to eat, just like the open kitchen in the actual restaurant meaning that they have nothing to hide and that they are proud of there produce and the cleanliness of there establiashment.

I would rather see what is going on in the kitchen on a TV screen than watch coronation street or a load of overpaid chavs kicking a football around for 90mins. (you can stay at home for that surely)

Dull isnt the word for this pub, its a pub that a lot of others should take a leaf out of. But on one negative point I must admit that the cocktail selection is way overpriced in here. Some of the cocktails are 2 more expensive than a proper cocktail bar in Brighton. I mean it is a pub at the end of the day.

Also in all the years I have frequented this pub I have never experienced rude staff ever in fact they have always gone out of there way to be very helpful.

Food is top notch.

I have never experienced rude staff ever. Anyway this is a class establishment. Cocktails are a tad over priced though, more expensive than Brighton prices.

Suprisingly this pub is now closed. For good hopefully. It needs demolishing. Maybe put a car park there.

Firstly, maybe this pub would have more reviews if the name of it at the top had been spelt correctly. Anyway that aside I decided to take a trip to the Marlipins on Monday night for there weekly quiz. Its a lovely pub inside very cosy and welcoming , bar staff friendly and beer is good here (havent tried the food but I am sure its great)

The quiz was a bit of fun and the quiz master was a friendly bloke who made you feel very welcome and he was cheery and funny at times. The locals are a tiny bit frosty (especially the people sitting next to us) they did not seem to like new comers at the quiz 1 woman who was had obviously had to much to drink was half rude. But I wont let this put me off the Malipins I shall be back but I will avoid sitting near these people.

Nice looking pub inside, but once your in there you will find thats all it has going for it. Pint or Perroni was 4.50 that is daylight robbery and it wasnt very nice. Also I dont get these pubs they expect you to pay a fortune for the food and drink then all they supply you with is crummy old school tables and chairs to sit on...very poor. Also it seems to be full of terrible pretend middle class from the poets corner area. I would give it a wide birth.

The Ginger Pig, Hove

Not to bad, beer isnt that great though, also expensive. Food I have heard is excellent (its a gastro pub) Left me feeling a bit cold.

The Norfolk Arms, Steyning

Not a bad old pub this, bit spit and sawdust but the land lady is friendly and so are the locals, beer is also cheap and tasty.

Went to this pub about 5 or 6 years ago and it was a bit of a dump, lovely building on the out side but inside it was like a harvester or something ghastly.

Anyway I heard it had been recently taken over and refurbished. So yesterday I went out there to take a further look with my wife and my parents. I must just say that this pub is now completely different, the refurbishment has been done to the highest standard, and it looks stunning in every possible way. The interior is so lovely and the garden at the front is very nice with such a lovely comfortable feel to the whole place. Spoke to the General Manager and he and his staff were very friendly and extremely helpful, and the menu looks great. I will be back to sample there fair and I will update this review as soon as I have. The beer is very good and also the wine and both at reasonable prices for such a classy establishment.

Its so nice to find a new place to go and relax with friends. If your done that way give it a try, you will love it

This pub was a dump before it was taken over last year, unfortunately its no better. Steer clear of this dump. Its full of nasty threatening chavs that don't take kindly to non regulars having a drink there or attending functions. STEER CLEAR!

The Duke Of Wellington, Shoreham by Sea

Well what can I say about this pub, actually quite a lot if you must know :-)

Visited this pub for the first time last week as we were looking for a new pub quiz to attend and boy what a find. I can quite honestly say that me, my wife and my friend have never ever felt so welcome in a pub in all my life, and I am not exaggerating. All staff and management are some of the friendliest people I have ever come across. The beer is fantastic and they let you sample anything youre not sure about, but it all tastes great to me and I am a fussy bugger. Even the locals are really friendly. The quiz was great we won on the first week and then came last tonight, just shows you that its diverse which is what you want out of a quiz.

I can quite honestly say that I will be visiting The Duke of Wellington on a regular basis from now on infact I wouldnt mind making it my regular drinking hole.

Well done girls your pub rocks

The Pilot, Southwick

Whilst waiting for a train at Southwick station me and a friend decided that we would nip off for a quick pint and the nearest pub being the Pilot seemed like an ok idea. How wrong could I have been.

The pub was in a very run down state indeed, I decided to go for a pint of Guinness which had a gigantic head on it but I didnt moan about it to the bar maid as I didnt think it was worth it, it actually tasted ok. The pub felt generally threatening and the duke box was on at its loudest and obviously the bass wasnt working properly on it and the treble was turned right up, my ears actually started bleeding at one point it was so piercing...

But the most astonishing thing about this pub for me was the fact that this is probably the only pub in the UK that still allows smoking, the place was like a fog and there were people actually sitting inside smoking and using the ash trays provided. "AMAZING"

My advice is "Don't go there ever"

The New Downsman, Hove

Lovely little pub. Nice owners, nice locals, and superb food and a good price and lots of it too, I dont know how they do it! Give the crummy Hangleton Manor swerve and go here instead you won't look back. Dog friendly as well. Nearly forgot to say the beers pretty good too really nice beer garden as well. Hip Hip hooray for the Downsman. .

Not very good food, even worse service would not recommend this pub. There you go a nice honest review for you. Don't waste your time or money going there.

Actually don't bother going to the Hangleton Manor either, its not very good. Nice beer garden though!

Great pub nice beer good landlord and good and fair prices, food looks good too although I have not tried it yet. Decent and fun quiz on a Monday evening.

The Hangleton Manor, Hangleton

Do you know what? I thought this place was really good for a while. But I am sure a new landlord has taken it over and he is well rude. I Had a pint of premium larger (3.85 a pint) and it was flat when I complained and asked for another he was fairly rude, tried to blame it on the new bar staff then when he pulled me another it was just as flat and tasteless, so when I said that was the same he said "No one else has complained" Don't you just hate it when people say that? I mean as if that matters. Does that mean he thought I was lying and wanted to waste my time.......Give me strength.

Unfortunately because of this I won't go to this pub again (and I have been using it allot lately) as I don't appreciate being treated like I school kid. I am 38 and when paying nearly 4 a pint I do expect it to actually taste nice.

(and he has a moustache........sort of, more like bum fluff)

The Grenadier, Hove

This place used to be ok but since the new manager took it over with her girlfriend it has gone completely downhill. It is full of mainly hooligans! Infact I went in there one Saturday night and felt quite threatened by the sort of customers it now attracts. The beer is not good either, asked for a pint of Guiness and it came served with no head! Looked more like a pint of coke. The food I have never tried but I am sure it is just as bad as you hardly ever see anyone eating it. The cheapest pint is 1.59 which is infact very cheap, but I would prefer to pay 3 times this and go to a decent pub like the Hangleton Manor just down the road. Your never see the landlady or her Partner in the pub as they are obviously to embarrased to be seen in there. The bar staff are incredibly slow and the toilets are disgusting. Take my advice and never go there, if you must have a drink and your are in that area buy a can of beer for the local offie and stit at the bus stop as this will offer much more than the pub can. Closing word "DUMP"

The White Horse, Steyning

What can I say, this is one of my favourite pubs in the whole of Sussex. Beer excellent, food excellent, surroundings are outstanding, and the staff are very attentive indeed. The owners have got it right and are themselves very pleasent indeed. And they cook a superb Steak. Massive variety of drinks at the bar so they can cater for everyone.

Needless to say I am very pleased as are all my friends and family that I have taken there.
