The Antelope, Warwick

In my last review a year ago I stated that the decor wasn't up to much. They have now done it up and it looks fantastic. Now I'm getting the feel of the place I'm liking it a bit more than I did last year! Do actually make a point of adding it to my crawls now!

The Bunch of Grapes, Warwick

A decidely average pub. Needs a bit of a redecoration and the main bar is quite small. Does have childrens play equipment out the back. Wouldn't avoid it if I was going past but certainly wouldn't go out my way there with so many great pubs in Warwick.

The Foresters Arms, Warwick

Can't quite understand how this pub has got such low ratings! I've been going there for a year (and travel five miles to get there) and its a nice pub. Spacious, quite friendly, nice garden, quite cheap. Not for you if you want a really lively, loud night out but nice enough. Two rooms, one is the bar which is used the most and houses the regulars and the other is the lounge which is used less. Seems things have picked up in the last year :-)

The Somerville Arms, Leamington Spa

An excellent side street pub that is fastly becoming a favourite of mine. Divided into two rooms, the main room at the front and a slightly smaller snug style area at the rear. Out the back off the pub is the smoking area which is a gravelled yard with some pleasent plants (slightly small but thats the design of the building so no marks off for that). Landlord is a friendly chap. As reflected by the recent CAMRA Heart of England Pub award the Everard beers here are excellent and there is also a couple of decent ciders on. Peaceful during the day and busy (but not packed) at night, you could do much, much worse than The Sommerville. Wouldn't recommend drinking spirits here, I paid over 7 for a double whiskey and coke, and it was a 'normal' mainstream whiskey.

Also do some great acoustic music nights and sell excellent Pieminister pies!

The Oak, Warwick

Decent little pub but nothing to make it the most outstanding in Warwickshire according the the ratings. Very small but very friendly, decent range of beers, nice little garden/yard. Worth a visit on a crawl but wouldn't go well out my way for it and there are better pubs in Warwick (Warwick is EXCELLENT for pubs so that's not an insult in any way). 7/10.

The Antelope, Warwick

Decent enough local pub. Reasonably cheap compared to the expensive town centre. Decor not up to much, locals friendly but knocking on in years (not always a bad thing!). Beer yard medium sized, always room to sit. Wouldn't go out my way but comfortable enough to pop into.

The Red Lion, Hunningham

Can't believe I didn't mention in my last review the food. It's second to none. I could literally eat there everyday. Except I'd grow so large I'd break the doorframe and Sam would have to bar me. For shame!

The Great Western, Warwick

About two mins walk from the station so good for those who do the pub/rail kind of thing. Decent pub, nothing all that special inside, two seperate bars. Beer acceptable. Garden was great though. Would go as far to say that its the best garden in an urban pub for many a mile round. Won't dissapoint if you just fancy a quick pint, great for a session in the sun with friends outside.

The Hollybush Inn, Leamington Spa

Interesting place. Sits somewhere between a 'local' pub and a town pub with an wide range of people who arrive to drink. Alongside teens who could be termed 'chavs' by those wishing to be harsh sits the elderly Indian gentleman, two elderly English ladies and a man in a business suit who works in London. That kind of place. Beer served is standard fair similar to the town pubs. Jukebox is good, there is a pool table and darts. Decor is up to stratch. Toilets could do with doing up. Outside area by the road (very quiet road mind you) but at least it has one unlike some in Leamington. Can get quite fun on the regular quiz/disco nights they have. If you're around North Leamington and fancy a change give it a pop.

The Talbot, Leamington Spa

Cannot recommend this pub enough for the solo drinker or those going out with friends. Tucked away down a backstreet by Leamington's canal you could almost walk past it by mistake. I went out armed with instructions of how to get there once and couldn't find it. Glad I did. Used to be called Hectors House after the old landlord and retains its front room style, cosy but not in an old fashioned or kitsch way. Landlord is a great chap and providing you are not a wall flower you can have some good banter with the regulars. Serves 3 ales at any one time, won CAMRA Pub of the Year for Heart of Warwickshire. Beer garden not fantastic but better than many. Locate it and go!

The Walnut Tree, Lillington

To confirm, this pub is now a bone fide Tesco, you can tell it used to be a pub just but only if you knew it wasn't a purpose built Tesco.

The Kings Head, Cubbington

Serves a cracking pint of ale and nice tast food. Building has a bit of character but isn't amazingly impressive. Wouldn't go out my way but if you're near by certainly worth a visit.

The Queens Head, Cubbington

Decent village pub this one. Two rooms with the bar between them, the quiet lounge and the more popular bar. Pool table and darks. Prices are very reasonable and the regulars are friendly enough. Reasonably nice garden to sit in in the summer. Best pub of the 4 in the village. 7/10.

The Kings Head Inn, Warwick

Quite like this pub and it is my most regular haunt in Warwick where I work. Not too hot on the ale side of things with only one ale at a time. This is a locally sourced Warwickshire Beer Company one and it changes every couple of months. Food is good quality and honest, not spectacular. Very friendly Italian chap runs it, aided by his two Anglo-Italian sons and a couple of others. Nice staff. Two room pub (unusual these days) with bar in the middle. Refurbished and cleaned up a couple of weeks ago, looks nice. Beer garden is a "Vine Garden" in summer, very nice, but limited for those who like to smoke in the winter I imagine. Went there once, keep going back.

Best country pub i've been to by a long distance. The food is absolutely fantastic, best I've had anywhere. There is a good (although not massive) selection of beers and a good long wine list. The decor is a mixture of old wooden tables and clean modern walls and floor and the three fireplaces keep the place nice and warm in the winter. In the summer you can use to large garden which is by the River Leam and the village bridge over it. Since first going there about 18 months ago I have been going back again and again and will do into the future. Good for any occasion (mate, family, date) and any size of party.

The Walnut Tree, Lillington

Since I reviewed the pub six years ago my opinion of it has changed. The service is now friendly, the pub is cleaner and they have got their act together. Its not brilliant but doesnt deserve the review I gave it on 9 September 2003. I would now give it 6/10 and am saddened to hear it might close as it is the only pub in Lillington and the community need it.

The Cricketers Arms, Leamington Spa

Nice enough pub right by a nice local urban park. Was a very traditional pub (and was good) but has been re-decorated extensively recently. The beer garden is nice and catches the sun when it comes out. It's not a fantastic pub but its worth a visit. The food is pretty good.

The Rugby Tavern, Cubbington

Pub has changed a bit since i last reviewed it in 2003. It is still family orientated but the DVD and the pool tables and games consoles have gone. The food is average and the drinking area is small. Some of the locals aren't all that friendly either. Its clean and well presented though.

Woodland Tavern, Leamington Spa

Not my local, its about 40 mins travel (bus and walk) from my house but I go there all the time and don't drink in many other places. Its a 'proper' old pub with two seperate rooms, quiz and fruit machines, darts and a jukebox in each room that work seperately. The staff are very friendly and the pub dog is friendly but quiet. Outside is a wonderful mural of local people out and about in the town with lots of little jokes to spot. A covered smoking area is available also.
