Postal Order, Crystal Palace

I'm giving this boozer a honk of my horn for approval. Yes, it's a Wetherspoons. And yes, it's seemingly a hostel for the down and outs who would otherwise clutter up the Park. BUT it puts on a wide selection of interesting ales that are otherwise hard to come by in my little ghetto. The food is honest and uncomplicated and everything is well priced and the staff are helpful. What more could you ask for. Honk!

The Rock, Chiddingstone Hoath

Perfect place. Quiet, with lovely Larkins on tap. One for locals, cyclists and walkers. Pretty area and no fuss, gimmicks, nonsense or kids. A rare treat.

The Bottle House, Penshurst

In two and a half words......Huuugggeee portions. I was stuffed on my starter and felt embarrassed that i could only manage a few mouthfuls of my monstrously oversized Skate wing BUT seeing who their traditional clientele are, rather than skinny cyclists, the portions probably cater well to their regulars. The pub is in a secluded and beautiful location in the Weald of Kent and, along with most of the pubs round that neck of the woods, they serve Larkin brewery beer which is genuinely very tasty - coming in around the mid-3's for the ABV i suspect i've bagged my last asbo for the time being. My brother and I also cheekily took our hammocks for this little trip and slept over that night in the trees alongside the footpath that goes behind the pub - there'll be more guerila raids of that fashion this summer!

The Mansion, Gipsy Hill

I really like this place. Granted i'm just a weekender, despite living only about 300 metres from it, but the staff, food, service and the Sunday night jazz are fantastic. I think the decor is better for its muted tones now as the previous damask paper made the place too dark - Damask walls are hardly "quirky" seeing as they're a few years past their sell by date now that B&Q are flogging the same stuff and even "Bridge House", the place where the old owner bugged out to, hasn't continued that style. The food is delish - my only criticism is that they stopped doing the "Eton Mess".

The Castle Inn, Chiddingstone

I really wish i'd read the reviews before i visited. The food and service at the castle inn are dreadful.

But on a positive note the beer was lovely, Larkins brew it at the end of the street, and the Castle Inn is certainly a very beautiful establishment. The whole village is owned by the national trust but they do its reputation no justice by serving up the slop i received for the price it was set at. Go there for the Larkins brew and an ogle at the street itself but don't be so foolish as to even consider eating anything there unless it was prepackaged, salted and roasted.
