// NO MORE DISCO //

The Friday night face of New Cross is changing.

It was once some post-apocalyptic war zone - resembling something akin to Mad Max 2 except with an abundance of kebab shops. One where heading out meant watching Blind Willy McTaggart play Jenga in some crooked watering hole. One where you could purchase a hipflask of antifreeze and a monkey from the same seedy character.

Now, there stands a brave new world. One where the rabid local hordes mingle with the scholarly student types of the neighbouring Goldsmiths art college. One that saw Time Out herald the new New Cross underground, a melting pot of ideas that takes in music, film, theatre, comedy, visual art, performance art and art for arts sake. One that led a certain cultural commentator to proclaim without any shred of hyperbole that contemporary New Cross is like Haight Asbury in 1966.

NO MORE DISCO is the heroic centerpiece of this innovative New Cross. While the New Cross Inn and the revamped Amersham Arms have enjoyed recent success, this night chose to return to SE14s original home of artistic revelry and rambunctious raucousness the GOLDSMITHS TAVERN. Seeking to revive its reputation as a creative hub, both night and venue offer a superior site for a gathering EVERY FRIDAY.

Overseen by local scene siren X! Dwarf, No More Disco utilises his DJ talents, as well as the pristine, unsullied skills of weekly guests. A doubtlessly eventful evening will be soundtracked by a cutting-edge mix of fat-arsed electro, gritty post-punk, needle-sharp indie and newer wave of new wave as well as head-warping visual accompaniments.

Because Disco - to paraphrase the great Fred Astaire - is just jitterbug

The Goldsmiths Tavern, New Cross

dude, you clearly havn't been here recently. you have no clue. they ID everyone that goes in there. The food here is great, like it or not and the new staff are friendly as f****. stop living in the past and accept that things can change.

The Prince Albert, Camden

The prince Albert has recently been re-opened. A restaurant has been added to the first floor and they also serve food in the bar.
Visited last friday evening and enjoyed the atmosphere. great to see this great location re-opened. Bravo

The Capitol, Forest Hill

too big and never full enough to create an atmosphere. Would be better suited if it was returned to a theatre..... or perhaps have some form of entertainment. poor 3/10

The New Moon, Welling

shame to see the welling attitude still hasn't changed so much. I managed this bar for 9 month last year and met some really cool people. i think this place just needs to be looked after properly and be used for what it can do best: live music!!!! there were some really good times there on the sunday nights that we had live music. the place was full full full with no trouble at all. thats what this place needs, the feel good factor, live music and socialising without walking around with a chip on your shoulder.

Liquorish, East Dulwich

the many times i have been there i have been made to feel always welcome and at home. However lads, every1 that i have spoken to says the same thing..... Turn down the bloody music so we can hear each other speaking! i asked for the music to be turned down a little on friday night last. The DJ duely obliged for 1 song and then threw it back up for the next song. gutted. I know i would drink there more if i could hear myself think.... i wonder how many others think the same!

Inside 72, East Dulwich

spit and sawdust with a really studenty crowd, works really well and is packed on many an evening. I like it and always get annoyed when someone gets the couch before me. Music- perfect

The East Dulwich Tavern (EDT), Dulwich

nice pub, does what it says on the tin really. Shows live footie, beer is good and well cared for, staff are generally friendly and there is no trouble there from my experience.

The Bishop, East Dulwich

i like this one alot, the bishop has done so well since opening and has brought a good service standard that was desperately lacking.... however.. 3 a pint? Better contact the bank manager

The Vale Bar, Dulwich

ALthough this place has been done up like so many other wannabe trendies it is lacking in the key areas. Food = Bad. Atmosphere = worse you feel as though you are being watched from the minute you walk in the door. "hide the fine china, they're back again"
