The Jolly Waterman, Cambridge

Expensive, and a limited beer selection; but the beer was in good condition and the food was not bad for the price. I'd prefer it dropped a few of the gastropub aspirations, but nothing really wrong with it and plenty right.

The Jolly Coopers, Hampton

Chef was away, but five beers on (albeit that one of them was Courage Best) - we had decent pints of Brakspear and Summer Lightning. Landlord friendly. And, blessed be, a bar billiards table. We'll be back when the chef is.

The Bunch of Grapes, London Bridge

Caught by the old scam where a half of something non-alcoholic costs as much as a pint of beer, and you order a pint without being warned that it'll cost more than the GDP of Zanzibar... a round here was the first and only time I've broken through the four-quid-a-pint barrier.

It's OK other than that but stick to the booze, for God's sake, you could go bankrupt drinking orange and lemonade.

The Hogarth, Teddington

Food's nice, beer's OK but very limited selection (ie, Pride and HSB, recently, no sign of the Fullers bottle-conditioned beers), super expensive but everything is around here.

The Crown, Broxbourne

Food good and plentiful - I had just cycled 40 miles and didn't feel like pudding. Limited selection of beer but that in good condition.

Canal 125, Caledonian Road

When your change comes in a little metal tray it's not really a pub at all, and when you've just paid 3 quid and something for a pint of mediocre Guinness, you're not feeling all that generous anyway, I think.

The Fishermans Cottage, Reading

Reasonably regular for the good but expensive food at lunchtime - was there in the evening recently, and no sign of the hordes of children. Duff pint of HSB tasted by barman and immediately exchanged with no argument.

The Dukes Head, Hampton

Extremely smoky. One to leave for the summer.

The Spread Eagle, Camden

A pleasant surprise that the Youngs/Wells merger means Bombardier, which was in good condition. Grilf had Special, which was also fine. Smoky and loud, but service quick at a busy time. Probably as good as you'll get in Camden...
