Queens Head, Little Eaton

How this place has made it into the Good Beer Guide is beyond my comprehension. Last night I had to send not one but two pints back as they were off and they were grudgingly changed. This did not stop the bar staff serving the beers in question to others. I''ve also found you need to keep an eye open for short measure and expect a sarcastic comment when you ask for your pint to be topped up. The staff just don''t seem interested in anything other than chatting to their mates and service is desperately slow. Food is overpriced, pretentious and of mediocre quality. The whole place could do with a good clean as well.

The Greyhound, Derby

Expensive and pretentious. I object to paying well over the odds for pretty indifferent beer only to be given short measure. The service was very poor from staff who seemed bored and uninterested. The drinking environment is quite noisy as the pub is not carpeted. How this pub got into the Good Beer Guide is beyond my comprehension.

The Rowditch Inn, Derby

In my view one of the best pubs in Derby. Beer is always first class, bar staff are friendly and the guest beer is always interesting. Mostly patronised by locals it can be busy at weekends but is a good venue for a quiet weekday pint.

The Walnut Tree Inn, Blisworth

Seriously unimpressed. The beer was expensive and not especially well kept and the girl behind the bar was very reluctant to give me a full pint. The food was ok but over priced. I was part of a small party and the staff, who seemed to have been dumped to get on with things with little or no training, managed to muddle the order and nearly forgot one meal altogether. The credit card machine in the bar wasn't working either. How it ever made it to the Good Beer Guide is a mystery to me.

The Exeter Arms, Derby

Too much of a pretentious eatery for my taste. Given the high prices they charge, they shouldn't be dispensing short pints and the staff need watching in this respect.

The Prince Rupert, Newark

Ruinously expensive with pints ranging from £3.50 to £4. Bar was staffed by dozy teenage girls who only seemed to be interested in food customers. Beer quality and range was ok, but how in the name of sanity did this make it into the GBG?

Cliff Inn, Matlock

Interesting selection beers and the Buxton Moor Top I had was superb. And reasonably priced too. I will definitely be going again.

The Brewery Tap, Derby

How this pub made it back into the Beer Guide is beyond me. On my last visit my pint of a guest beer was off, and although it was changed without fuss, the person behind the bar seemed uninterested and did not turn the pump clip round. As a result they continued to dispense the dodgy beer to customers who knew no better.

The pub is quite noisy due to the lack of carpets and is a more pleasant environment when less crowded. Expensive by Derby standards.

The Queen's Head, Nutfield

Having been back a few times since the landlord changed, I think it is only fair to say how much the atmosphere has improved. The Harveys is still well kept too!

The Three Horseshoes, Thursley

I visited the pub today and my experience was mixed. The first impression was not good, as I followed a group in, only to have the door slammed in my face my the last person, who judging by her facial expression, clearly thought motorcyclists should not be allowed over the threshold! I had to wait a few minutes to be served, but this was because the barman was taking a lot of trouble to explain the beers available to another customer, providing samples. The Shere Drop I had was in good condition, but hardly justified the price: 3.40 a pint. The pub was very busy so eating was not practical.

The Queen's Head, Nutfield

I use this pub pretty regularly and have to say that the Harvey's is always well kept, although some of the other beers can be less than perfection. The landlord however, is in a league of his own, surly, rude and inclined to try to give short measure, which has led to several run-ins over the years. Yet the other staff are all pleasant and work hard. It is the only pub I have ever visited where two women started to fight, fortubatelt ably dealt with by the barmaid that evening!

The Marble Arch, Manchester

A first class pub with superb beer, highly motivated and inteligent staff and a wonderful interior. I shall definitely be back when next in Manchester!

The Castle, Battersea

Another horrible example of the current mania at Youngs for gentrifying previously pleasant pubs. Some work seems to have been carried out comparatively recently, and the gents lavatory now resembles something out of Changing Rooms. The beer was adequate if overpriced, but hardly deserving of a Good Beer Guide entry. The food was reasonable but again overpriced, which is a shame since previously there were good value dishes of the day available. Staff were pleasant although the place was virtually empty on a Tuesday evening.

The Swan, Lewes

A very pleasant pub just away from the town centre. The food seemed to be good and reasonably priced. The beer quality was excellent and I sampled some of the best harvey's I've had for a little while.

Trafalgar Freehouse, South Wimbledon

Visited last night and very impressed now the pub is smoke free. Five beers on offer and the Westerham Black Eagle SPA was superb. When my round came the dark beer my friends selected was reaching the end of the barrel, so it was immediately taken off, which is not something you would come across everywhere. However they were very pleased with the Gales HSB they were offered as an alternative. We will definitely be back!

The Windmill on the Common, Clapham Common

This pub epitomises all that is wrong with Youngs new gentrified house style. It has obviously been subjected to an expensive makeover which features low level and very uncomfortable seating but the lighting is inadequate and the decoration characterless. The beer was in perfectly acceptable condition but overpriced. The menu was also advertising very ordinary food at inflated prices. having waited an hour for my sandwich, I then had to argue to get my money back when there was still no sign of food materialising and even then the member of staff tried to give me short change! My friends were finally served some very ordinary food one hour and twenty minutes after placing their order.

Avoid this pub like the plague: there are plenty better in the area, and even a few Youngs houses that haven't yet suffered the imposition of their ghastly new house style.
